Má vlast (Czech for “My Fatherland”) is a remarkable set of six symphonic poems composed by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana between 1874 and 1879. These pieces, often presented as a single work in six movements, celebrate Bohemia’s countryside, history, and legends.
The arguably most famous one is “The Moldau” or also Vltava in Czech.

Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884) was a Bohemian composer and a pivotal figure in Czech music. He is often hailed as the father of Czech music. Smetana’s compositions are deeply rooted in his homeland’s culture and history.
Smetana faced controversy during his tenure as a conductor in Prague due to his progressive ideas influenced by Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner. Despite this, he championed Czech opera and left an indelible mark on the country’s musical heritage.
