- The Classic Game Boy was a magical thing to me. My first handheld like many other kids of the 80's. I loved it, played it all the time. It was a challenge though in low or no light situations. If only we had today's options then! In this video I check out a new easy to install kit for the Game Boy DMG that gives us a new IPS LCD full sized screen. Id rate this as a beginner to novice level mod.

I've got my dmg on ebay I'm planning on getting a ips modkit screen with bracket it includes the double sided tape to keep it in place with the bracket

This new IPS screen looks absolutely stunning. Shame about the greys in the palette being swapped. I know it's a relatively simple fix but no way am I cutting a trace on the original DMG board just for this. I'll wait for future revisions.
This. Exactly. I still think if you have a treasured OG Gameboy the Bivert mod is more favourable. You don't get the razor sharps of the IPS screen, you still get blurring and ghosting, but, it's much more in line with an OG system.
Handheld Legends has already addressed this and has fixed it. Their V2 is currently sold out but hopefully is restocked soon.

Anyone know if this mod would be negatively impacted by an already-installed bivert chip? Would I need to remove it?
UPDATE: Yes, you definitely need to remove the bivert chip if you have one. All your "colors" will be inverted otherwise.

I noticed the brackets texture really stands out around the viewable area. Do you notice it much while you're playing?

Got the screen elsewhere, but thanks for the heads up on console5's bracket. That thing is mandatory, imo.
For anyone else in the same boat, YES, you'll need to remove any previously installed bivert chip... My soldering skills are passable, but my de-soldering is a nightmare. I did it, so can you.
I have an IPS GBA and will be getting the IPS GBC screen soon.
Are you going to do the color pallet fix? Version 1 of this board has the dark grey and light grey part of the pallet reversed. You can really see it when you show Super Mario Land in the video.
Just had to look that up, wasn't aware. I see what the issue is now and its not a huge deal as its not the darkest and lightest colors that are swapped its the middle two of the 4. so 1234, 2 & 3 are swapped in the gradient, so like you say the ligh and darker gray. But it seems like such a simple solution Im gonna do it just so its rite.
The palette fix was a must for me, and really keeps me from recommending this kit at this time. I own a huge library of games, and so many of my favorites looked terrible with the two grays swapped. This mod is a step in the right direction though, and can only mean we will get something even better, and more streamlined in the future.
This was in the first batch. The new ones out of china already have this fixed apparently. Haven't fitted mine yet. Easy fix either way though.

The ultimate dmg upgrade i would say. I play them just on my SP. Works for me. Maybe ill buy a ips v2 kit for my SP. And play them on that system

I just grabbed an OG Gameboy. I need to change my screen. How is the battery life? Did you change to a lithium rechargeable battery?
That looks great, but what's all of that stuff around the edge of the screen? Is that speckled light ir light reflecting off some tape that you put around the working portion of the screen?

can you let me know which CPU version you have on this game boy? I have 2 game boys with CPU-06 and that IPS v3 kit doesnt work.
Hi!
So I recently decided to mod my old gameboy with a backlight. This was my first attempt at this but followed a guide and (eventually) installed it.
Issue is that now the gameboy will not boot carts... the screen is deffo working as when booted without a cart the black rectangle with accompanying chime show as usual but when a cart is put in (i have tried several) the screen is just blank with backlight.
Any ideas what could be the issue?

I’ve installed this exact mod and it’s great, but I have to push ‘up’ on the d-pad really hard when playing games unless I loosen the screw behind the d-pad inside the battery compartment. Has this happened to anyone else or is mine faulty?

You might want to check your website, I have reviewed the RetroMini, and it blows the original Game Boy out of the water. I don't have to buy AA batteries, and my cartridges can stay in storage. Thanks for the video, but I've upgraded.
