Been playing harp 47 years. Regardless, it's always good to review fundamentals. Billy highlighted some great points.

Effective use of dynamics is a key difference between novice and pros. The ability to adapt to the bands’ groove is another key skill.

I liked this interview. Billy Branch is a favorite harp player. "The Son I Never Knew" with Kenny Neal is great.

Willie Dixon used to bring his Chicago All Stars up to the Cabooze Bar in Minneapolis back in the mid to late 70s. Billy Branch was with the band. It was exciting to see a new, young harp player blowing classic blues and working his way up the ranks. I've always liked Billy ever since. He also did a Blues In The Schools instructional where he'd teach youngsters about the music and how to play a little harp. That was a cool thing to do.

one thing i would like to add.......practice,practice,pratice,.......play what feels good to you.....work on tongue blocking and lip pierce also practice scales......crosstrain in other styles to make your main style strong,.......DON'T LET YOUR PLAYING BECOME COMPLACENT......COME UP WITH NEW LICKS ALL THE TIME,...DEVELOP A TONE FIRST,DON'T TRY AND HIDE BEHIND PEDALS TUFF ,ALOT OF GUYS HIDE BEHIND THAT SHIT WHICH IS COOL IF YOU GOT A STRONG TONE!STAY AWAY FROM CLOSED MINDED HARP PLAYERS!!PEACE

He's really polite, in saying that a lot of young (mainly white) harp players are way too into themselves, entirely clueless that the harp is a stand-in for a vocalist. Phrasing, tone, subtleties of a singer make or break them; harp is the same. No one says, "Wow, that singer sure could sing fast!" It's idiotic. No one listens to a Walter slow classic where he kneads just one note for 8 or ten bars, and says "Gee, I wish he'd played a lot more notes in there." Learn control of your instrument, so you can play what you hear inside; practice difficult or odd riffs and runs you just have to get out, until you can play them clean, but don't mistake technical prowess for music. Don't let your technique define your music, but above all, don't let your technical limitations keep you from finding your voice. On Walter's 1950's recordings like "Juke," et al, the quality is really poor, obscuring many little flourishes you only catch after listening dozens of times, but which separate the depth of the performance from the rote repetition note-for-note imitators go after.

A ridiculous statement considering the harmonica was invented by white people in Germany, and the majority of harp players play harmonicas made in Germany by Europeans.

@@thBrilliantFool WTF is your point, as I was focusing on style versus Kenny G technical skills. What does the color of the factory worker have to do with the end user's musical approach? Are you trying to claim Nazis invented the blues?

Indeed, so many younger harp players latch onto other players' solos and riffs, incessant on learning them note-for-note (begging for tabs, sheets, nomenclature, etc), and then string them together and cram them into whatever song they play, whether they fit or not. Instead of listening to the song, feeling it's swing and motive, and then using the instrument to get out their own personal feeling about the music, as if they were humming or whistling along.
    Difficult thing to convey.
