Wow, I haven't seen this movie before I went to college. I forgot about this scene! I had a professor who was a psychology grad student at Princeton in the early '50's. He used to talk about how they actually did solitary confinement experiments like that. They'd leave people in a bare, windowless room with absolutely nothing to do, for about 3 days or a week; I don't remember how long. They didn't go crazy like in this scene. He said that after a while, they'd start talking to themselves, telling jokes, and then they'd start telling the same jokes over and over. This was in 2006, the man had to be at least 80 years old. He was an interesting person.
This scene, even tinged with comedic overtones, is perhaps the one unsettling element in the film. The principal actors (a long list of notables) chew the lush scenery with great abandon and Walter Matthau as Albert Einstein is the cherry on the sundae. I.Q. captures the tone of the mid-'50s with a splashy palette of colors. I recall the lobby cards and posters at the mall for this movie; having this quirky film OnDemand is a tonic of sorts for a rainy day especially as I've aged. Great film.
1:12 "now why would he do that?"
I can picture Einstein looking at him like that.
Yup that's the "you're going to die alone" stare
