  • I was enjoying a great day of Snowmobiling with Troy Johnson from LCC in Alpine, WY. I made a decision to descend on a South Facing mountain after climbing a North Facing Chute. On that day that wasn't the best idea given conditions! Watch the Avalanche and learn from my mistake. It turned out well but could have been ugly. Enjoy!

      Good thing there were no trees at the runout, an avalanche can go through the trees at 100mph, you can't do that on your sled.

      +Do It With Dan When you are in back country like this, whether it's for skiing or snowmobiling, it is strongly recommended that you take an avalanche training course. They teach you how to recognize different types of snowpacks, and which types of snowpack are likely to cause an avalanche. Basically you walk up onto a bit of steep slope, and using a shovel, cut away a block of snow a couple feet wide by a couple feet deep. Doing that lets you examine the layers of snow directly, and you can pat the top to see if it breaks apart in layers. If that happens, then an avalanche is likely.

    • @CalgaryDynastar
      @CalgaryDynastar 8 лет назад +9

      +Do It With Dan Most important thing is staying away from South facing slopes as they get the most sun exposure. You can see the little death cookies (chunks of snow pack left from previous slide) at the bottom right after he rides out of the avalanche show that that face had already slid sometime previously as well. The snow also looks like warm spring conditions which is the most dangerous time for avalanches. Increases and fluctuations in temperatures and longer periods of sun exposure leads to a very unstable snowpack.

    Great video to learn from, thanks for posting. Do you think you could have ridden out of it if you had triggered that slope while ascending it? It looks like being headed in the right direction was crucial to getting out of it, and it seems like it's a rare situation for a snowmobiler to descend something that they haven't already highmarked, as in this vid. Hope it doesn't make people think they can outrun them all!

      +Denis Gavrilov Absolutely man. Sledding in pow is a little counter intuitive at first to some as well. You can see it well in the vid, you have to counter steer in order to lean her over. Turn right, sled rolls onto left side, proceed to turn left

  • @JeffreyJohns
    @JeffreyJohns 11 лет назад

    The north face would have been dangerous to ride on as well. It was wind loaded (based on the direction of the cornices and wind ridges in the snow) and those little snow balls you could see rolling down are a sign that the snowpack has started heating up which often causes instability.
    Would be a good idea to stay off that completely.

  • @5amjamz
    @5amjamz 12 лет назад

    Agree that Bruce's book is a good tool as well but it's all about the decision making when you're out there. Even the most experienced people die because they are persuaded by the pursuit of a cool line, good snow and social pressure.

    @5amjamz - Sun baked slopes (South Facing) ,recent avalanche activity, convex shaped slope, cornices,trigger points including wind loaded slopes, bottom and top of cliff bands and sometimes tree areas.
    All of these red flags were there for you to see and make a more informed decision.

  • @vincemca1
    @vincemca1  12 лет назад

    @5amjamz Usually the South Facing slopes are safer in this region. The recent temperature elevation changed that to making them more prone to issues.

    I don't disagree that most human triggered avalanches occur on aspects where more humans tend to travel due to better snow conditions. We all want the north and east facing powder...That does not change the fact that sun-lit aspects are more unstable especially after sitting in the sun throughout most of the day.
