- I was enjoying a great day of Snowmobiling with Troy Johnson from LCC in Alpine, WY. I made a decision to descend on a South Facing mountain after climbing a North Facing Chute. On that day that wasn't the best idea given conditions! Watch the Avalanche and learn from my mistake. It turned out well but could have been ugly. Enjoy!
I hate when people say "What do you need all that power for??" Well heres your answer!!!!
throttle is your friend when snowmobiling unlike other power sports where throttle can be your enemy
Sam Antonacci o
Good thing there were no trees at the runout, an avalanche can go through the trees at 100mph, you can't do that on your sled.
darkrevenger04 throttle can be your enemy in anything knob
thats nothing. my uncle baught one with 55hp yesterday and its a fkn beast
You probably saved the lives of those guys at the bottom. If that snow let go while they were riding uphill there's no way they would have gotten out like you did
+Andy House funny how it works out like that
when in doubt, throttle out.
I'm not familiar with snow like you are. How could you tell the conditions were bad? Like, you seemed to know that it was going to happen.
+Do It With Dan Love your channel!
+Do It With Dan When you are in back country like this, whether it's for skiing or snowmobiling, it is strongly recommended that you take an avalanche training course. They teach you how to recognize different types of snowpacks, and which types of snowpack are likely to cause an avalanche. Basically you walk up onto a bit of steep slope, and using a shovel, cut away a block of snow a couple feet wide by a couple feet deep. Doing that lets you examine the layers of snow directly, and you can pat the top to see if it breaks apart in layers. If that happens, then an avalanche is likely.
+Do It With Dan Most important thing is staying away from South facing slopes as they get the most sun exposure. You can see the little death cookies (chunks of snow pack left from previous slide) at the bottom right after he rides out of the avalanche show that that face had already slid sometime previously as well. The snow also looks like warm spring conditions which is the most dangerous time for avalanches. Increases and fluctuations in temperatures and longer periods of sun exposure leads to a very unstable snowpack.
Come on up to Canada Dan we will show ya what the snow is really like.
love the vids and you can tell where he was it was ready to do that
This is one of the best avy vids I've seen... Thanks for the good footage, and going back with the slow mo and commentary! I wish more people would do that. The snow looked HEAVY.
Props for mad skills, too.
i want to see this from the other people at the bottom's point of view!
That sled must have some power, soon as you hit the throttle you took off, because snow moving like that generates a lot of force moving at that speed. Great ride man, that was an awesome save!
This a great example of how snowpack can change so quickly on varying aspects. Glad you made it out okay and thanks for sharing!
Congrats on making it out alive, some people are not as lucky. I have spent a lot of time in the backcountry. This will definitely make me more cautious and aware of the dangers that exist.
Very interesting video & danger situation! ...woow Thx !Best regards from Canada👌💕🍷🍁✌
When the ground started writhing the hair on my neck stood up. Way to handle it like a boss.
Well, so much for yammy's being the heaviest and bulkiest sleds on the mountain...nice job!!
that went from a ooh yeah moment to a ooh no moment very quick.
also the other way around
Perfect example of " when in doubt thottle out"! Nice driving bud. Thumbs up
Whoowee! Perfect timing on the throttle. Any earlier and you're might get bucked. Any later and your in the white washing machine. Awesome vid. Thanks for sharing.
The RUclips algorithm brought me here. But that's one long track! Sled looks like it rips.
@christatsuno You obviously didn't watch the video! It was posted for others to learn from on what to watch out for. You can't learn from mistakes unless you recognize them. Welcome to the real world. Easy to criticize when you aren't privy to the situation.
Now that was a close call.
Kickass music to go with great experience
Good music, good sled, good video🤙🏻👍🏻
oofdah...way to get the heck out of there! thought you were getting dumped right away. funny how you can see your boys taking off like "oh shit!" as your tearing out of there. Awesome vid brother.
Is that really the music you listen too when you’re coasting on beautiful snow capped mountains ?!!!
I like Lamb of God myself. Very relaxing and spiritual.
@@alfredocarpaneto5976 ok. I can see that. Try Alesana Then. They are also very spiritual
the only thing that saved him was power
Jeremy Clarkson would be so proud!
+tankmaster1018 lol yep he would
Power got him into that dangerous situation.
@@patrickmcnamar5705 and also got him out
@@rasmus9640 all the power in the world won't help if you get carried into the trees. Tough to sled through an Aspen grove at 70 mph and the avalanche is bearing down on you at 100. My close friend just died in Crested Butte in a small avalanche, carried him into the trees. Died of blunt force trauma.
you saved your buddies also cause they were eyeing it up to go up they would have been done. thick heavy snow that refreezes quickly when it stops. been toast. nice thinking move. put a sticker on your helmet that u survived.
Nice save! You had concerns when you grabbed that radio. 🤘🏻
Great video to learn from, thanks for posting. Do you think you could have ridden out of it if you had triggered that slope while ascending it? It looks like being headed in the right direction was crucial to getting out of it, and it seems like it's a rare situation for a snowmobiler to descend something that they haven't already highmarked, as in this vid. Hope it doesn't make people think they can outrun them all!
WOW dude I would have shit my pants!! Good riding man...saved your life for sure!
Live in Etna, right next to Alpine... I can say this for a fact. Our avalanches usually take people out. Glad you made it out safe bro
I never rode a snowmobile but this reminds me of riding jetskis, it looks like you have to lean the whole machine here too? And that avalanche reminded me of choppy water.
+Denis Gavrilov Absolutely man. Sledding in pow is a little counter intuitive at first to some as well. You can see it well in the vid, you have to counter steer in order to lean her over. Turn right, sled rolls onto left side, proceed to turn left
Thanks bro! It was intense. I'm hoping others can learn from it and hopefully avoid it. They are a force to be reckoned with!
I bet that was a helluva rush and ride. Not that I would ever want to experience it. 😂
The north face would have been dangerous to ride on as well. It was wind loaded (based on the direction of the cornices and wind ridges in the snow) and those little snow balls you could see rolling down are a sign that the snowpack has started heating up which often causes instability.
Would be a good idea to stay off that completely.
Agree that Bruce's book is a good tool as well but it's all about the decision making when you're out there. Even the most experienced people die because they are persuaded by the pursuit of a cool line, good snow and social pressure.
When you got GNR in the headset and alot of horsepower...just send it!
@5amjamz - Sun baked slopes (South Facing) ,recent avalanche activity, convex shaped slope, cornices, trigger points including wind loaded slopes, bottom and top of cliff bands and sometimes tree areas.
All of these red flags were there for you to see and make a more informed decision.
@5amjamz Usually the South Facing slopes are safer in this region. The recent temperature elevation changed that to making them more prone to issues.
That’s called balls out riding. Went with it trusted that 250hp. Must have some arm strength to wrestle that monster
can't stop watching snow mobile vids...pity I live in Australia. Looks more adventurous than jet-ski, but not as fast.
+Kale Shirran not only faster than jet ski on snow but water too lol
+Kale Shirran you have the right mind set of 220 kmh but it all depends on your gearing
Awesome, good thing you were ridding a Yamahamer
Great video...with a great song by Gn’R !!
Damn. You can see as he gets off the avalanche there's the remnants of the last avalanche dusted with a bit of fresh snow.
Another soul saved by power!
Surprised you waited so long to hit the gas.. were you hoping it would pass you?
shit BRAAAAAAP
what a trip! It looks like the snow is beginning to "boil" in a way -hey?
Im wondering thi... If one doesnt "floor it" (while its seemingly churning underneath) one would end up sinking in it, as you progress down the hill then? ?
Skill and luck saved your ass!
Nice riding!
Right tune for the vid🤘
crazy how the snow flows like water lol lucky dude
nice recovery bro...close one!
After you clear the current avalanche, you are riding through what looks like avalanche debris from a past avalanche. Must be a pretty unsafe slope... And unsafe conditions. Very lucky.
glad everything worked out, i heard of avalanhe beacons or w/e do you wear them? what size track is on your snowmobile and if it was smaller do you think you could have gotten out of it?
well, that is one hell of a climber
I want a apex mtx. Something about the apex that's just friggin rad. Sucks that YAMAHA discontinued it. Yamacats just ain't got reliable breed into them like a true YAMAHA. And I got no use for a cat. Junk.
Yep. I've got an 07 apex planning on keeping it now.
Cool video, thanks for posting.
The throttle saves the day, yet again:)
I don't disagree that most human triggered avalanches occur on aspects where more humans tend to travel due to better snow conditions. We all want the north and east facing powder...That does not change the fact that sun-lit aspects are more unstable especially after sitting in the sun throughout most of the day.
Incredible...Well done!
Vincent great video! I mean it! Do you have a video of this from below from anyone else that was there?
yes good thing you had the power to climb out of it most sled wouldnt get enough track speed to drive over it... looks like that hill slides lots...
@5amjamz All others were clear from the area before descending... That precaution was taken.
That turbo probably saved your ass.
Awesome power of a turbo......
@BeastHive I am curious about your comment... How is this in any way related to Harley Riders? How is it relevant to even mention hiking or snowboarding? Are you trying to compare the ability of a snowboard to stay afloat in an avalanche to a large snowmobile track spinning at 70MPH+??
Well done man. Didn’t bitch out.
Like a Boss. Cool!
@BeastHive I shouldn't have been on that descent in the first place but I assure you they don't ride out of this type of slide. I snowboarded competitively for many years....
holly mna sick place it looks like. hope no body got hurt post some more riding vids..
Awesome ride!
awesome riding man. balls deep !!
Now that's how TF it's done 💯👍
That was siiiiiiiick man
I tell yah those apexs and nytros will go through ANYTHING
woah, amazing footage there! good thing you are ok! :D
lucky you had a yamaha apex
well since the apex is like 600 pounds itll truck through anything! looks like a fast sled!
Great recovery
Lol the music
wow, consdiering he was cuaght in an avalanche he did everything right. he waited for a minute until he passed over the stauchwall before gunning it.
Love the song GNR rules!
wow glad u made it dude holy shit
beast sled dude that sucker was going up the mountain like it was eating pie will u make a video of where u put ur go pro on ur helmet
that sled and that avalanche is fucking balls to the wall awesome!
Im gunna go ahead and say you didn't get lucky, nice riding...
2:01 milli seconds from death
how many life's left? Gnarly vid man.
lol damn thats scary XD i bet you were like oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit when you saw the snow starting to slide XD
Nice work!
Large avalanche, what's considered just a normal avalanche?
Your a lucky man!!
you just lucked out
Riding down a wind loaded hill facing the sun....shouldn’t have even risked it.
damn bro, when in doubt..punch it out!!...way to fight and stay alive!
is that your snow-bike? I wanna to that too, looks great at the beginning :D
I would have shit my pants good save!
I guess you had a couple beers that night lol..
For the fun of it
At some point you had to have screamed in you head like Homer Simpson"AHH!"
well that gets the heart beating
Cool
Nice Riding When in doubt throttle out
