    Some buildings reminds me Strasbourg, Alsace. Anyway, Eifel region is a nice place. Actually, Germany has its own beauty, too. Thanks Thomas. Take some rest after that and enjoy your holidays. 🌛💟

    • @charlesgrant-skiba5474

      Well, Alsace was closely related to German culture (and for centuries it was even one of the many lands of HRE. (France slowly began to take over Alsace from the end of the 17th century). Cities such as Strasburg, Mulhausen, Altkirch, Kolmar, Hagenau and all the rest had to change their names so that they did not sound to German). The language was the Alemannic dialect, spoken (to this day) in many regions of Germany. A similar cultural (especially architectural) influence can be observed in other former German (or Austrian) regions such as Pomerania, Upper and Lower Silesia, Bohemia, South Tyrol, Transylvania etc. Politics and wars separated families, made them strangers to each other. Many French families have moved to Alsace to change the local culture. I guess it worked. Sad story...

      @@charlesgrant-skiba5474 were they forced to move to Alsace Lorraine? Was it deliberate by the French government?

    • @charlesgrant-skiba5474
      @charlesgrant-skiba5474 3 года назад

      @@appleslover No offense, I don't blame anyone. As a historian, I am interested in the clash of cultures. This is best seen in border regions such as Alsace and Lorraine or Silesia. In the past, more attention was paid to dynastic ties (marriages, figureheads in power - for example in Lorraine, a Pole favorable to France - Leszczyński). In this way, the legal bases for territorial claims were created. Later, schools and offices were francophone, economic and military ties were tightened, etc., religion and the attitude of the clergy were of great importance. No one was forcibly displaced but there were preferences for the "right" people (offices, estates), French and Francophiles were described as the only true Alsatians. (In the nineteenth century, similar methods were used by the Prussians, but it lasted for a short time). The conflict over Alsace was also of a military nature, so Paris did not trust the Alsatian elite (although many were loyal to each government, this too could not be liked). The flagship example is the Nobel Prize winner Albert Schweizer, resettled to the French colony in Africa for fear that he is too pro-German (not politically, but culturally). But not only him. Russia deported to Siberia, France to colonies (infamous prisons in Haiti). Years ago, I interviewed representatives of a certain Alsatian family that did not have an easy life under French rule after World War I, although they were not supporters of Germany (later the Gestapo also looked for them). But for France, they were too independent. Within a decade, they lost everything to the French and were forced to leave (they did not want to go to Germany, they went to Switzerland, where they have now lived for three generations, but who are they? French, Germans, Alsatians, Swiss? Problems with identity (cultural, political and ethnic) are not specific only to African Americans, it is also present in Europe.The task of the European Union was to slightly weaken the imposed nationalism and at the same time to give a local outlet to the patriotic ambitions of various minorities.
      This, however, was not very successful. Poles have Silesians for the fifth German column, Italians are afraid of the secession of Tyroleans, Spaniards are struggling with Basques and Catalans, and Bretons boldly admit that they do not feel French. Culture remains the most differentiating factor for people. It's a pity, because there are no outstanding Alsatians anymore, they have to be only French. There are no slugs, there are only Poles, There are no Tyroleans, they are Italy and the Catalans must be Spaniards. In common awareness their culture does not exist (well, maybe only to a limited extent for tourists). Central governments will always fight it, and that is sad.

      I've seen a video of heavy water streams flooding the streets. It was filmed from the second floor of possibly one of the houses in this video. Unbelievable, the strength of the water. The ground and first floors especially in the lower part of town must have been under water. I don't know about casualties and the damage done to the houses.
