    I don't know how I missed this. Thank you so much. The Plex server is my quarantine project. I have been looking for something to rip my CDs to Flac. Exact Audio Copy is the best I have seen and it's free.

    Nice work Lon. I've been using Audacity for years to rip CDs, LPs to FLAC. Works a treat, but I will give your suggested Exact Audio Copy software a try. In a past life I produced and presented on radio for about 8 years finally moving ito DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting) about 10 years ago. We moved the majority of our audio content onto servers using the FLAC format which our licencing (broadcast, copyright & IP) permitted, but not MP3 which would have sounded awful if it was ever broadcast!

    Lets see you do some audio books. Either older CD audio books (that used to be split up into hundreds of 3 minute tracks) or the other 1 large file per book format. Later on, they started selling audio books on CD in MP3 format - although those MP3's were normally at a pretty low bitrate.
    So- lets see or hear about audio books? Maybe not officially supported, but still... These are audio CD's, and they can be in FLAC, MP3 or other formats....

      Try the “Sweet Fades” option for gapless playback - doesn’t always work - but it works more often than it doesn’t - should be in Settings somewhere, depending on what device you are using!

    Great stuff Lon. Nice to see we have similar music tastes. Marty Friedman and several others I saw there are some of my faves as well. Check out Neal Schon's solo work (outside of Journey) and I know you will really enjoy that If you havent already checked it out. Amazing solo instrumental guitar as well. Ive been working on my Plex server stuff a lot latelt. I have 3000+ CDs. (sadly a lot of them were ripped long ago with older 128 to 192 kbps and 256 if I was really lukcy) so I also have a lot of work to do. I tried Exact Copy but takes too long an i also encountered an error I couldnt figure out how to resolve. It worked and then some setting got chnaged and now it doesnt . I use Media Player to rip my FLACs and then clena up meta data and album cover info with MP3 tag. Very cool that Plex can allow you to share when on the road. I need to explore all the fearures as I did just buy the Plex Pass. My wife will enjoy the lyrics feature for sure.

    Been ripping my CDs for many years in EAC using MP3/Lame at “insane” quality for import into iTunes. My collection was foldered similar to what you’re recommending here. Have just started using Plex and bought a Synergy NAS. The migration from iTunes to Plex was trivial in my experience. Love the added metadata capability. I might try the flac adventure to learn and test out the experience but will probably just stay with high quality MP3 format for compatibility and storage size. I find road noise impedes any major quality improvements a WAV file might provide anyway, especially on the highway or on my motorcycle. In my case a good quality MP3 is “good enough”. I draw the line at Bluetooth vs wired headphone connections, though. I can still hear the difference here.

  • @FulciLives

    EAC is the gold standard but there is another free program called CUETools and it includes something called CUERipper and it works very similar to EAC but it is much simpler and easier to set up than EAC. However if you want to use EAC please look up a guide. It's not rocket science BUT there is more to it (the whole set up process) than what Lon showed.

    maybe its me, but your advise was to use Flac file format in the example you showed you were actually ripping to Wav, and you also didnt show how to configure Flac as the compression mode, would it be possible to add this?

    I use Windows Media Player to rip my CDs to .wma, should I upgrade to .flac? Keep in mind that I normally just put my original CDs into my stereo (technically, it's a 90s Sony boombox) and they sound amazing.

    • @corgan0
      @corgan0 6 лет назад

      ericbazinga there is no good reason to rip to .wma. Windows Media Player will also rip to .mp3. Just change it in the settings and rip to the highest quality. Like he said in the video, unless you are listening with high quality headphones and speakers you won't notice a difference between that and FLAC.

    How much control is there over sorting? I use Logitech Media Server and that has custom sorting tags. I use the artist and album custom sort tags to enforce sorts as I want them, e.g. for a "Dave Matthews" album I would set the custom artist sort tag to "Matthews, Dave" to make sure it shows under "M". The one I mainly use though is custom album sort where I set all the custom album sort tag on all my tracks to "artist-surname, artist-first-name, year-of-album-release" so if I browse in album view I see things arranged as I used to arrange my CD racks, i.e. CDs grouped by artists and, when I could be bothered, each artist's albums on the shelf arranged left to right in order of release date. Does Plex have similar custom sort tags to override the standard artist and album sorting?

    Thank you so much for producing and sharing this and similar videos on Synology and Plex. All I know so far about these products are from your videos! I recently started to save my audio CDs on my Synology NAS. It worked for ca. 850 CDs like a dream and the music in FLAC format sounds really superb! However I came across one problem: I have another ca. 60 CDs where EAC got stuck on the last track. It is just hanging and the you can hear the CD drive giving this awful click, click, click noise. I tried restarting but to no avail. Would you or another reader know what's happening here? Again - many thanks for all your videos.

    Actually regular audio CD isn't the same level with "Master Quality" and stuff..
    There are other "Master Quality" audio format, and the latest one is MQA Audio..
    Good thing is, one of its packaging are good old CD (among other)..

    • @bruceherford2250
      @bruceherford2250 6 лет назад +2

      Except MQA-CD is very limited in terms of availabilty of content and playback equipment globally as it has beed developed PRIMARILY for the Japanese domestic market. Finding native audio equipment and/or a DAC audio converters to playback the format are as scarce as hen's teeth. This format together with other 'Hi-Res' audio formats MQS-SD, Blue-ray Audio & SACD will not have too much bearing on the average user as the availabilty of content is rare in all these formats. Esoteric formats have been with us for about 70 years since your grand parents used shallac based 78 records and your parents came home with 33 1/3 vinyl LP records.
      Anybody using these Hi-Res fomats who can afford the necessary hardware and are happy with having a scarcity of content is probably not a likely candidate to be seeking out a Plex server to playback audio on the fly... ;)

    • @dhavidcg
      @dhavidcg 6 лет назад +1

      Bruce Herford ultimately agree with the comment.
      While res audio is a really tempting, it is a pretty niche market.
      I mean, besides the content, only a handful of people who are willing to pay 20.000 USD on a dedicated music player, or a DAC, not to mention the insane price of audiophile speakers. (Though I am sure they will be sounding really good)
      And for me personally, a high quality setting on spotify plus an old soundbar of mine is already more than enough to listen on my favourite tune :)
      P.S : i skipped the era of collecting CDs. Went straight from cassete to digital streaming lol.

    I am interested in knowing how Plex handles multiple copies of the same album (yes I am that old, they are still albums to me), say FLAC and MP3 formats of the same album... Similar to having a 720 and 1080p version of the same movie.
    I might have missed it in the video, but does Plex recognize different formats as the same album? and how does it decide what to play?

    Am I doing something wrong.? My DTS files are not playing even after in depth inspection while converting via EAC. They seem to play fine on other media servers, but PLEX does not play them. Maybe ist a limitation on Nvidia shield pros? I hear something akin to white Noice. Am I missing a setting in Plex? The Plex library seems to recognize .flac files (but not .wav) Both the .wave and .flac files play fine with the media server of my Sony 4K player, extracted by EAC. Plex just seem to not offer playback.

    I have a Synology server, 5 bays, 40TB of space and have a few apps installed including Plex. I like to store things in folders so they are organized and easy to find. I am confused, however, about how to save all my music on Synology under Plex? I have been creating a folder for each artist and moving the albums into corresponding folders. So, I would create an Eric Clapton folder and within it I have albums like 2 Nights, Clapton and so on. But since I have over 4,000 CD's, I am wondering is this the best way to do it or should I just drag each CD's folder from iTunes (or the location were this folder is located) into Plex?
    Thank you for your help.

      iTunes does not have the capability to check the rip for errors. Despite being a digital format, the CD format is not easy to rip error free and that is why programs like EAC were made.

    Another great app for FLAC and other hi end codecs for Andoris is Hi-Def Cast. Connects to my NAS server and can play ALL formats and also has great GUI. WIsh they had it for iOs so my wife could use it as well so Im stuck. I dont want to have to rip BOTH ALAC and FLAC just for her use so I hope I can get Plex to transcode my FLACs (1 format to rule them all) to something her iOs phone can read from our LAN.

      it doesnt take 30 min to rip!!!! I have ripped hundreds of CDs at high speed into FLAC with EAC and never had issues... it will slow down and keep reading to get an accurate rip if it has issues... then it gives you an accuracy report at the end..... I have 1000+ CDs and if I spend 30 min ripping each one, I'd be dead before they finish!
