I had to make an update for sure. Google picked up my MAME install video so I was getting lots of questions on it. I haven't quite figured out how to run all games when some files are missing. I've run into that with a few games and can fix some but not all.
About to have to do this myself, definitely will be writing a script to automate this process. Take the list of ROMS - Search the CHD's to see if there is a match, if so move it to the correct place and create the folder for it. If that sounds helpful let me know.

The sites that have CHD’s have them arranged on their websites in such a way that you can’t use a download manager, but have to individually download or obtain via torrent/magnet link. Real pain, because if the websites hosted more efficiently, the CHD’s could be obtained much quicker. Even CHD’ packs by letter of the alphabet or release year to break things up but still allow for some sort of bulk downloading.

Having to do this sucks. I have 48gb of Roms loaded & the CHD files for the version I'm running are close to 120gb. Then having to create or rename the CHD's after figuring out which games need them is a huge PITA. I'm going to use try that old program that helps sort that shit out for you.
When I try to star killer instinct it shows me the different version when I double click on the first one it turns black and then go back to the menu but frozen and than it closes, do you have an idea what’s going on?
i downloaded the latest MAME 0.249 and suddenly San Francisco Rush and Ridge Racer don't start anymore. I tried to do as you said but then i saw, the .CHD file was already inside a folder named after the rom. So now it just doesn't work anymore
If you just updated MAME and kept the same ROMs/CHDs its very possible the newer version of MAME needs an updated ROM file. I'd download the old version of MAME you were using and try that.

Look into unibios for neogeo games. It's a good way to explain some advanced bios setup and loads of info on how to do it. The basic bios setup depends on your Romset but the standard split set would have ROM.zip and bios.zip in the same ROMs folder and everything will work fine. (Neogeo.zip is the bios and 3countb.zip is the ROM) actually not sure if 3countb needs the bios but you get the drift.
So Showtime really runs well with that rom on the pc you've suggested. I still have that pc you suggested in my Blitz mod. I would really like a true arcade version of Showtime than using the DC version
It does! I leave it running on the full medium resolution. There is still minor stuttering on that screen after it announces the player, but it’s that super quick transition screen. The announcer stutters once in a while but nothing major like before. I run the Blitz/Showtime rom all the time in my cabinet now.
Yea i kinda wish we didn't have to wait this long to fix what needed to be fixed for showtime to work well other than getting a high speed processor for it.

@@wilsonng7554 bruh. The game will not work at all without the required CHD, and it doesn't matter what game it is. But with that said, most older games are just roms and dont have CHD - it's arcade system/game specific. The games that have CHDs, the original arcade boards have a hard drives and they work just like a game on PC because they are pretty much a custom made PCs. MAME will tell you what files are missing when you start a game up and the game does not boot. The CHD are the easy part and I am certain they don't get updated, they just need to be directed like this video explains - in a folder with the name of the parent rom. The roms on the other hand do get updated and you have find the right updated ones that will boot up if you have the newest MAME. Everyone has this problem, but if you seek you shall find.
I can't for the life of me get Dance Dance Revolution Extreme to boot for the life of me. Put the CHD and konami 573 in that folder but mame just can't find it. idk what to do.

Unfortunately, I couldn't even find the roms folder. Guess I'm stuck with Gaiapolis on the NES then. Update 1: now I can't find the CHD for it anywhere.
Sometimes parts of the file you need to find elsewhere sometimes you can google the file and download it then place it in the roms folder and it should work
I don’t know if a fix for sure. You might need to either move the entire MAME folder to the external or move the CHDs to the computer’s drive. You might be able to change the directory in the MAME.ini file but I’m not sure.
I didn’t think Time Crisis even had a CHD. I’m running it on my light gun cabinet and it loads fine. I assume you may have a ROM that doesn’t match the version of MAME you’re running it on. There’s no great way to tell if that’s the case though.
Despite the war that russia started against my country, everything is quiet in my region, thus i need to free my mind a little bit to keep myself calm. And your videos will do. About the video: I figured this out like last month, by simply going to google and google that information about CHD files. And many websites says that CHD files needed to be put inside of ROM folder, along with main rom file, but only few website says that you need to create another folder in ROM folder that has the same name that main rom file has, and then you need to put CHD file of that rom in to that created folder. I made Killer Instinct work that way, that didn't wanted to work. But sadly there is one "BUT". You still need to have a version of the rom that match your version of MAME, along with CHD file. Otherwise it will not work. And another problem is that, it is very, VERY hard to find CHD files for the games that you wanted to play, thus why it is almost impossible to play many games that you wanted to play. And on latest version of MAME even Mortal Kombat needs a CHD file to work, for some reason. But i'm using more older version of MAME for MK so i don't bother about that.

I don't let the gas prices bother me when I think of how much worse it could be. MAME is a great tool but I wish it were a little more user friendly or at least more self explanatory. It would be really cool if MAME could not only tell you you're not using the correct ROM version for that MAME version. And maybe it could tell you what ROM version you do have so you know what MAME version to download. Stay safe over there! I hope this gets resolved and doesn't get worse.

Completely new to this, especially MAME. I have the official MAME software and I am getting the ROMsets (which are around 70GB), but do I need to get the CHD set, too? That set is more than 400GB and I am not sure if I need. Can you please explain this for me? Will the romset be enough to play the arcade games with launchbox and mame software? Thank you :)
You will need those CHDs to play the games that require them. I can say this, as far as I know, any game made before 1994 won't require a CHD file. Killer Instinct (my personal favorite) was the first arcade game to come with a hard drive to store game data, the CHD files are just copies of the hard drives and in some cases compact discs (typically for Japanese games). One option might be to just download the ROMs/CHDs of the games you know you want to play. Having a massive set of games sounds great but most people find they'll never play 90% of the games and end up frustrated by having to scroll through the huge list.

I’d look for another ROM download. It’s very possible the one you have isn’t compatible with that version of MAME. It can be really tough to find the right one since most sources won’t list what version it’s for. The best advice I can give is search archive dot org. Search “MAME ROMset (MAME version number)” for example.
Mine works fine. I have noticed some games have multiple CHD files, it’s possible you’re missing the right one. It’s been a long time since I’ve looked at my A51 set up so I can’t remember off the top of my head.
I'm no MAME expert, that's for sure, but it always worked with the files just thrown into the ROMs folder. My MAME tutorial video has been picked up by Google, so of course I get lots of questions on this. I figured I better make an update.

I assume you just put the CHD set in a folder with the parents name of the rom, just like the video explains. It will do no harm by trying, it can only work or not work. But half the fun is finding the files that work, right. 😅
I installed ki 1 and 2 on an old pc in 2008 In 2010 i modded my og xbox to play ki on it I even helpt somebody on youtube who had troubles running it Now in the present day I cant get this rom to work On a new rig I lost my hope Adios ki and 2 Thank you for the old days Farewel and adieu But xbox1 version is still an option 🖖
It’s fairly easy. Just get the ROM and CHD file. I personally prefer MAME version .139 32 bit. You don’t need to follow this video for that version. Just dump the CHD and ROM (zipped) into the ROMs folder and run the game. Finding a working ROM and CHD combo can be tough but keep trying. I think there’s a website, killer instinct project or something that makes it easy.
War gods has an odd CHD. There’s 3 files out there but only one of the files worked for me. I can’t remember which one but I believe it’s the one with the 11 in the name, it appears to be a date.
You might just have the wrong rom for the version of MAME you’re trying to use. The unfortunate thing is there’s no good way to tell, as far as I know at least. I just set up my new MAME cabinet a couple of weeks ago and this still worked. It’s possible they’ve changed something in the newest versions of MAME since they release them so frequently
You showed that the chd file will be copied into the folder, but since you did not show us where to download the chd file and did not leave a link in the description section, I disliked your video.
I can’t leave links. RUclips will shut down my channel if I do. I’ve said this several times. I’ve even had copyright strikes for trying to help with software links in the past. Yeah. I think I can safely say check out archive.org. Its not full of virus links and lets you grab individual files.

Planetemu is THE source for all the stuff you'd ever need. It's updated constantly, everything is working, and if it exists, it's there.

What if a .chd game does boot up, but doesn't play its music in the game? Like in "Let's Attack Crazy Cross"?
That’s likely an issue with the game not being emulated properly. I’ve never heard of that game so I can’t say I know much about it.

I have photoplay chd file but it won't run. I loved photoplay when I was young.

I get the error: U37 not found. This appears to be a rom file that is missing. I have downloaded multiple files and none work.

Some of those Japanese games don't work well on MAME, or work at all. I googled that game and it seems to run on Teknoparrot emulator.

The version I used is MAME (0.159u2)

Still doesn't work. Trying to play wargods
War gods has an odd CHD. There’s 3 files out there but only one of the files worked for me. I can’t remember which one but I believe it’s the one with the 11 in the name, it appears to be a date.

No leave the file name as is. Just make the folder name Wargods.

You might just have the wrong rom for the version of MAME you’re trying to use. The unfortunate thing is there’s no good way to tell, as far as I know at least. I just set up my new MAME cabinet a couple of weeks ago and this still worked. It’s possible they’ve changed something in the newest versions of MAME since they release them so frequently

You showed that the chd file will be copied into the folder, but since you did not show us where to download the chd file and did not leave a link in the description section, I disliked your video.
I can’t leave links. RUclips will shut down my channel if I do. I’ve said this several times. I’ve even had copyright strikes for trying to help with software links in the past. It’s difficult to find a balance between pleasing the audience and pleasing RUclips. They’re getting more and more strict.
