    I heard a lot of critics say they should have stuck to the original ending where Alex kills herself-including Glenn Close herself. But I wouldn't have found that believable since everything Alex does involves being more & more invasive in his life. Going to their home and meeting his wife, then killing the rabbit; taking his daughter from school. She was out to harm him and yes even his family. She was out to take away his life or family not harm herself.

    • @stephenking3356

      Agree, she terrorizes not only Dan, who might deserve it some, but also his innocent wife and especially the little girl. They spend over an hour making the audience despise her and then they want some artsy swan song....no no. That would be the cop out ending.

    Jesus, Ebert really used to lay on the spoilers in these reviews! No matter what he thought of the ending (and it WAS awful), don't tell people about the rollercoaster scene, the car accident, the "Friday the 13th" twist, etc. And Siskel lets loose that Douglas tells Archer about the affair. Good God! I forgot that they used to give away so much on this show.

    I don't care what Glenn Close or these two holes (especially Ebert) had to say about the ending; I saw the original ending and it was boring and overlong. The theatrical version was 10x better, and not because of the revenge factor; it was simply much more chilling and exciting, something the original ending lacked. I would've been disappointed if they had left that one in.

    • @apartmentgroup9671
      @apartmentgroup9671 2 года назад +2

      Close herself was completely devastated at having to reshoot the ending. She refused at first, but I guess she was forced to shoot it in the end (actors really have very little real power, and THIS was the role that made her super famous). I saw an interview with her where she said she had concocted a whole backstory for Alex, that she had been a sexually abused child (by her father), etc. She actually really felt a lot of empathy for the character, and that's how she chose to play her. And then she had to shoot that ridiculous ending. Close felt like it was a huge betrayal to the character as well -- I think it eats at her to this day.

  • @natalieps2387
    @natalieps2387 3 года назад +7

    What's interesting is they changed the original ending & glenn close '''& Anne archer hated it. It was supposed to be a bit more serious w/ Alex slicing her own neck . The police come for dan & they ask if his prints are on the knife. They flash to an earlier scene when Alex came at him w/ the knife & he grabs it & puts it down. So the movie ends with dan get arrested but his wife finds the tapes of Alex saying she was going to kill herself. So the audience is left knowing he will be cleared. Supposedly the reaction was not good & people wanted the wife to kill alex. So the ending becomes like halloween or something w/ the bloody battle to the death.
    I felt the same way by one of my all time favorites that swept the Oscar's silence of the lambs . After lecter exits it gets bad. The end is a standard monster movie in the dark. The only think that saves the ending is the final lecter scene. Also it's a testament to how electrifying hannibal & caprices uneasy alliance us so great the ending still cant ruin it.
    It's funny how they say this movie scared so many men . It's like the line in sleepless in seattle " did u see fatal attraction ? Well I did & it scared the s%it out of me it scared the s%it out of every man in America! Rofl.
