    I got one a few months back cuz I wasn’t going to spend Sebenza money on a knife sharpener. So far I’ve sharpened D2, S30V, S35VN, M390, M4, 1095, and a bunch of other types of steel w no issues. Not Instagram edges but working edges on my hard use knives. I love it for the price.

    Hey Pete! I have been a KME user for several years. I have no plans to change. With that said, I watched a Worksharp "how to" vid comparing one way sharpening spine to edge, edge to spine, and 2 way edge to spine to edge, and finally sweeping sharpening movements mimicking Wicked Edge. One way edge to spine by far produced the sharpest edge. I tried it on my KME and I now have a sharper edge than I have ever been able to produce when I did it like you, edge to spine to edge. I'm not saying you are doing it wrong. Just suggesting you give it a try. If you do, please make a video with your results. Thanks!

      I’ve had a similar experience with my wicked edge! Tip to heel sweeps seem to be a bit slower, and less intuitive, but definitely more even for me as I tend to lose patience when reprofiling. I’ve found that once I do the reprofile, I touch blades up heel to tip and it’s a piece of cake with the same level of sharpness. The only exception is Spyderco knives without a choil as I’ve gotta love on that plunge transition a little bit.

      It doesn't grip small knives very well. Things like Spyderco Manbugs or pen knives can be pretty finnicky. It does work well on the size of knives that Cedric is using. It's a good value. I bought the expansion by Sweet Knives to get higher grit tapes and those work well too.

    You can buy an adapter now that let you use either any 6 inch (edge pro, venev, TSprof, hapstone) or 4 inch (kme, 4 inch venev) stones instead of the stock ones. It also has a ball handle at the end so it much more comfortable to use. I bought a 6 inch version as a stone holder for when I do in hand sharpening or stopping, it's a lot easier than holding a 6 inch blank. It's 3D printed but of high quality and now if I ever buy one of these I can use dozens of my stones instead of the 3 they provide.

    I’ve been using this for 9 months, and I’ve sharpened around 40 knives with it. Previously I used a Lansky fixed angle sharpener. This is a hundred times easier to use and whilst having a much reduced range of abrasives, it has enough (if you add a strop) to get a decent polished edge. At least it’s pretty shiny to the naked eye, and plenty sharp. It struggles with very small penknife blades and longer kitchen knives, but for everything else it’s great. There’s more grits coming from 1st October too. All that being said, I’m still thinking about moving up to a KME!

    • @norcalbowhunter3264

      If you look at after market accessories there’s some add ons that’ll let you use a lot more stones which gives this a more versatile stone range than most other systems out there. So stone limitation isn’t an issue unless you’re just really against buying after market parts for it.

I also have a Lansky system which is great for small knives but of course the angles are set, so often Step 1 is reprofiling a knife, which is not always ideal. I’ll probably grab one of these systems now so that I can match factory angles. Also, the clamp seems better than the Lansky, and the price is right. Thanks for the first impressions vid!

    • @yomodojo
      @yomodojo 2 года назад +1

      Mate, I am one of those complainers. The magnets are really bad. The clamp is really bad. Your blade will wobble, and if the spine is not wide enough to get a proper grip, then you're definitely going to have a bad time. It works best on a flat grind. That much I can say, but anything else and you're really playing with fire. I hope that Worksharp fix this, because I had high hopes for this, however now I'd rather fork up for a KME or something similar. If I consider the cost of my knives vs. a decent system, then the system is going to win. Particularly when you acquire more knives. It's an upgrade of sorts, from the Lansky, but it's a first version ... so as they said / say with Apple kit; "If you want to be on the bleeding edge of technology, then be prepared to bleed." This system, falls in to that category.

    I got the Elite version a few days with the extra stones and I have sharpened 6 knives. Small to large pocket knives and 2 beater kitchen knives. Most of my pocket knives were fairly sharp to start with so I used the finer stones and the ceramic to hone them back to hair splitting. The 2 kitchen knives, I had to start with the 220 grit diamond and reprofile both. One had several knicks and notches. My wife believes that knives or indeed just tools (think hammer and pry bar). Anyway the really bad one took about 40 minutes to go through the grits and ceramic then strop. I took both to almost mirror edges and both slid through paper when finished. It is small and a bit toyish feeling, but I does produce great results. For longer blades you do run out of stroke. I think I will probably end up buying the TSProf Kadet for my larger blades and kitchen knives. I think the basic structure will probably hold up just fine. The question is how long will the stones last. I definitely feel I go my money's worth.

      I have this sharpener and the Gritomatic 4" stone adapter The angle changes when using the taller KME and off brand stones so a digital angle finder
      is a must when changing between stones. I spent more on additional stones than I did the WKS tool and will buy the WKS upgrade stones for ease of use.

      What would you say are the potential downsides of the KME? I bought this kit that Pete's taking a first glance at, and must say that initially I liked it, but now after some months think it's not everything it has been sold as. I'm now seriously considering going to a KME, because I want something that gives a reliable edge. In particular, I want a solid clamp. This one wobbles and you can see the effects of it on the actual blade. It will get a sharp edge, but it won't be pretty.

    • @Rust.Bucket
      @Rust.Bucket 2 года назад +2

      @@yomodojo For me. The size of knife you can sharpen on the KME. The Stones that come with it (I have every diamond grit that KME offers) are too short to be honest. Its perfect for pocket knives and probably anything shorter than .... 6 inches? The clamp on the KME is far better, but can still wobble slightly if you leave it loose (like I do so that I can flip the knife over easily). If all your'e sharpening is your pocket knives....its a great system. I have yet to acquire a Wicked Edge; so I can't comment on that.
      If I wanna sharpen anything larger (like a kitchen knife); I swap to a different system. The Tormek is baller and produces great results...but takes a few minutes to set up and then tear down and makes a watery mess. From start to end...at least 30 minutes if not an hour. I usually use a Worksharp guided system with pivoting stone. I pull it out with NO set up. 5 seconds to check the right grit is on and the angles are what I want as I walk to the kitchen counter. Throw the sharpener on the counter and I hit it 7ish times on both sides semi-freehand (the guides are very effective) ...change the grit, and go again. No more than 5 minutes from walking to the closet and returning it to the closet. The knife is about 90% as sharp as from the Tormek...but the girlfriend can't tell the difference....and neither can onions. Going poop is more of a chore than touching up a kitchen knife with this system.
      Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
      David

    Right now I'm torn between the worksharp or the DMT aligner kit. I have a sharpmaker, a set of strops with varying grit compounds, and a C/F double sided diamond bench stone that allows me to put a good functional edge (and maintain that edge) on most any knife, but for whatever reason I'm feeling this itch to try and maximize my entire EDC rotation by playing with different angles depending on what the steel wants.

      @JustIn-op6oy 2 года назад

      I should probably clarify - I'm torn between whether the best option is to adjust every knife in my rotation to the optimal edge angle for the steel (which would mean I'm getting the worksharp) OR just focus on getting the best possible finish at a set angle across all steels (which I think would be best accomplished with the DMT system as I have had good results with their products and appreciate the range of grits they have available).

    I like the adjustment mechanism of this, but the stones and ergonomics of the Edge Pro Apex is much better. Wish I could just mash em together. I just can’t use the Work Sharp because I need more than these 3 stones. I need diamonds for my k390 and my S35VN blades

    If you don’t like the Buck this would be a good opportunity to put your own flat grind to it. At least if you mess it up no big deal right. It’s pretty easy though so I don’t think you’d mess it up. Just saying

    Buck knives forgot how to put an edge on their blades too? I recently bought two Ka-Bar knives, and both of them had edges that were completely f***ed as well.
    I bought one of these WorkSharps, but have yet to try it out. I noticed a lot of people were buying some emery sticks, and/or sandpaper to get higher grits to use with it.

    I noticed that you removed the clamp to rotate the knife instead of always using the rotate function, is there a reason why?

    Just wondering if the side you started sharpening on was the side with a bigger sharpened edge? I've noticed when reprofiling some knives have to be swapped around before you get a burr. If I don't it tends to lead to getting a burr on the second side faster. As you know more on this then me I'm glad to hear that it is more likely a bad job from factory and not my sharpening technique. 👍

    What kind of results do you get with the worksharp field sharpener. That’s my main method and I can get my knives sharp but never more than just shaving. I have a feeling the 20 degree guide has something to do w final sharpness. Can you maybe comment on the final sharpness of a 20 degree edge vs a more steep one?

    On initial impressions, would you say it is worth it to spend almost 3 times the price of this to get the KME, or would it make more sense to get one of these? I only sharpen until it pops hair, I don't care so much about checking my makeup in the reflection on the edge. But I still want a good sharpener. Currently I have a worksharp electric knife sharpener, a Lansky and some wet stones. But I want a good, easy to use angled system that works better than a lansky.

    The biggest ? with these Systems is to calculate the angle 📐 with trigonometry. Since every blade has a different width the horizontal distance is different.

      yeah, i use an angle finder on mine if im going for something specific. the triangle formed between edge, sharpener and stone is slightly different each time depending on how tall the blade is
