Just get started. That's what I tell myself. Once I start I feel like I get in a groove and get more things done than just worrying about getting things done.

For me I try to get a notification on my phone to (do x now) oftentimes I go to the library as it takes away from the natural home feeling of "oh this is relaxing time." Additionally going to the library at a specific time each day will put it in your mind that "hey this is work time, let's go to the library." You can also get help at the library on your project(s) if you can't find out what to do. (Usually, college libraries are more helpful due to the database) the librarians helped a ton with finding sources for my final.
I do try to take some breaks every now and then to not seem overwhelmed just by doing the work of loads of things.

By FAR the best advice I've ever heard for procrastination. Solid and sensible and clearly explained. I'm bookmarking this to come back to whenever I get myself stuck. Thank you.

As a writer, I quickly learned that writing...is ACTUALLY...re-writing. So yes...I get it quote-unquote "finished". Annnd...I already know it's not done. To soften the blow, I do a lot of writing, re-writing in my head while I do other things...so when I go to type it, it feels closer to what I actually want already. BUT...even that will still need to be re-written. One hammer strike to a rock does not make it a sculpture...one splash of paint does not make a painting...(although I have seen where someone tried that ;) And yes, re-writing can get tiresome. A story of workplace conflict? It's tempting to suddenly resolve it by having a comet take out the empty building in the middle of the night! But that just makes the story shorter, not better.

I can relate so much to this rule of 15 minutes! 😭😭 I'm currently working on my master's thesis and every single second I spent working on it felt so agonizing! 😭😭

I love the first tip of setting a timer for like 15 minutes or less. It makes it so much easier to actually do some of the work ^.^

I always find it's easier for me to do something, when I know it's going to make my life in the coming 1-3 weeks easier, especially when my schedule is filled with other stuff. When I have truble starting something I'll go take a walk, listen to some music and then I'm usually pumped enough to start.

The explanation is so clear! 💕
I’m not the type who checks again when something is done. But setting the time chunk is one of the good suggestions. Also, I need an accountability buddy or a coach to make my work faster 😆

This is some amazing advice. I identify with everything you've said and I have done some of these tips and they do work. The problem is that I don't always do these tips. I really identified with the first one you said about how its hard to get started but once you get started you want to keep going. I was just talking to someone about this the other day and I described it as a big heavy bolder at the top of the hill that you need to really push very hard in order to get it going, but once it starts going down that hill, it will keep on going (at least until it gets stuck on a tree or another rock or something lol).

I'm one of those people who, when writing something creative, needs to let the first draft mature in the mind. :) An idea that doesn't survive my brain is a bad idea. An idea that grows inside me, matures, turns into a complete (and invisible!) book is something that I need to write down fast. Once I finish a few chapters, I read everything again and make the corrections I feel I need to do. The edited version is always better. I see both the good and the bad in this. The bad side is what you call "the perfectionist procrastinator". I'm adopting the 15 min per day rule from now on. I'm sure it'll work for me.

This is some really helpful advice but what should you do if you are stuck in a situation where cannot get away from a distraction? I listen to music to help myself stay focused on what I am doing and sometimes even work to the beat of the music I am listening to but I know I can't have that music everywhere I go. When I don't have the music, there are some distractions that I cannot separate myself from or ignore without creating a bigger problem that breaks my concentration and motivation completely as it pertains to other people around me that I currently cannot separate myself from. This is throwing a wrench in everything else I'm trying to do, such as breaking an assignment up into chunks, being able to follow my schedule, and starting early, among other things.

I find that once I get something started I will often end up trying to go for completion without many roadblocks. Getting it started is a HUGE problem for me though, that anticipatory anxiety gets me every time.
Writing down everything I need to get done also helps a lot so I can visualize it.
(Also if you don’t mind me asking I would love to know what you did your thesis about)

i feel like once i take out the biggest rock, and then i have taken out most, or at least more of the rocks, i feel like it gets filled more and more before i reach the top of the mountain ... and then after a few years, i figured that there will always be rocks in my bag still, and so i don't see as much purpose in emptying it as much as i possibly can lolz
