Why Starfield Surprised Me (Retrospective)

Starfield is a space exploration action role playing game; that prior to its release in 2023 garnered warm reviews for its space exploration, gunplay and storytelling. Post-launch however, Starfield was not received well by gamers with user review scores were lukewarm at best.
Criticised for poor pacing, expansive yet empty worlds and a lack lustre main quest line, Starfield in a word had been labelled as disappointing. However one's perception of RPGs, as other things in life; are influenced by both personal choice, and taste.
That considered then, and with me being a fan of many of Bethesdas other RPGS, I wanted to experience this tale for myself, and see if Starfield stands amongst Bethesdas best, or worst. So come with me as we experience Starfield's plot, and review its gameplay systems.

@@overheatedeskim054 I genuinely hope the release of the Mod Kit will change things, but unlike with Skyrim and even still Fallout 4 there's barely any content created with and for StarField, my recommendations are still filled with F4 lore videos but none of those channels are even creating the same amount of StarField content.

My main issue with Starfield isn’t the loading screens, ridiculous perks systems, lack of customisation, lack of good combat or anything mechanical decent. I truly have no standards whatsoever, I admit it. I can live with all that. The main issue was that the story is so offensively bad, the writing borders on vapid parody, that any means of taking the story seriously in order to invest oneself… requires one to be intentionally stupid. That’s something I can’t do. The amount of times I had to roll my eyes or cringe throughout the dialogue quickly became one too many. Video game writing is usually pretty mid… so this was distinctively bad. Hard to believe they wrote it and thought; “yep, this is good enough”.

The story telling in Starfield is abysmal. There's was little to endear you to the Constellation team, yet they assumed (by killing off one of the main NPCs) that it would generate the players since of empathy. They could have developed the bond simply and still garnered the same effect; it's not rocket science...it's Story Structure 101. Case in point, they create glorified games of "fetch" for random NPC's yet miss Cora, who almost urges the player to find books for her...AMID GALAXIES LOADED WITH BOOKS! It's not always grandeur that sells the dramatic and I think the ambitious scale of Starfield was detrimental to it's own development.

What i found out is, that the NPC is invincible, and cant be attacked. Its just a mediocre RPG, without many freedoms, but lots of loading screens.

I tried Starfield on PC first and it was so janky that I switched to Xbox S...and it was just as janky as the PC format! Playing the gameplay (at times) was like traversing a minefield for fear of triggering a bug...in fact, I'm still finding bugs after patch.

    • @julia-6195
      @julia-6195 6 месяцев назад

I didn't have any game breaking bugs until the updates. Each update caused problems with my save game, but guess what? I found out that going thru Unity resets everything in the game except your stats. It gets rid of the bugs. So right after the updates, I rushed to get thru Unity and the bugs were gone. The only bug left that needs to be fixed is the duplication bug - the one that duplicates stuff on board your ship and makes everything a mess, but I also found out that if you get your ship damaged a little - turn off your shields and ram an asteroid to damage the hull - then land and pay the Ship Engineer to repair your ship, all that junk goes into your cargo hold, and from there you can sell it at the Trade Authority. Don't worry. It spawns again.... and again... Bethesda really needs to fix this one. It's an annoyance rather than anything game breaking.

@Franknstien It’s boring friend. I know you put a lot of work into the video. And that work is amazing. Way better than starfeild ever will be. However, the games bad. It’s extremely boring and it’s flaws just out way it’s positives. The story’s awful and while there are some choices that look dynamic. Like the closing the door on the guy. It doesn’t lead to fight. Walter just makes a threat and the guy gives it to you as if you intimidated him, same lines and all. You can’t even kill him without Walter getting involved. The positives of this game just aren’t worth the bad things about it.

  • @aersla1731
    @aersla1731 6 месяцев назад +3

The examples you gave for choices mattering are pretty weak examples. In the neon quest with Walter, no matter what you do the outcome is the same; not to mention the whole idea of negotiating or trying anything else was pointless as Walter states earlier in the quest that money isn't an issue and that he will try to negotiate and to just take the deal. The choices just seem ham fisted. Now for the second quest, it doesn't matter what reality you save, nothing changes. The only example I could think of where choice actually some what matter are in the quest where you discover the clones of historical figures, and maybe that old earth spaceship quest. In my opinion they should have approached the game more like a sandbox or immersive sim or the looter shooter, would have made for a much better game. They have this vast world but it has nothing to say, you are supposed to be an explorer but everything has been explored. And if they wanted to lean into the nihilism of the whole concept of multiverses they should have, but instead we get a very railroad style game. They were afraid to commit to anything with the game, so everything comes off as half baked. After 100% the game, I was asking myself why. I had a sunk cost mentality as I bought the 100 dollar edition felt like I needed to get my moneys worth but it was just a waste of time. I just like to preface by saying, I am not a hater just a let down fan. I didn't think my expectations were unreasonable given their previous work. Anyway, I hope the game improves with time. Can't say I agree with your video but it's nice to see a different opinion, feels like now a days everyone gets stuck in their own little echo chamber.

(granted it still effectively has loading screens system-to-system but it lets you seamlessly explore within a system and fly down onto the planet's surface as opposed to loading screening into a square of terrain). @@KingofFreaks thats a good point, I could have added some more context to my points throughout. I've definitely heard that feedback from others too, so I've been working on that for my next video.
Essentially the context is pickedup from audiologs throughout the bunker, but the Mantis is esseqntially a bounty hunter/vigilanty of sorts, and when they went to pass on the title to their son, the son was killed during the tests, and the mantis themselves too died to illness.
Since their death the mantis is now an urban legend of sorts, and so when travelling in the razorleaf many pirates/other bounty hunters will flee out of fear. In the moments amongst the gunfire to me it felt very bioshock learning about them, so I guess it stuck with me quite a bit.

    Power Leveling 101
Beasts for exp and npcs to drive your economic engine.
Early game, loot the Wild for everything. Pick every weed, mine every rock. Crawl back to your ship if needed. But with Personal Atmosphere you won't have too. Put it all in the magic storage box in the research lab at the Lodge
By the time I started doing research seriously, I had 80% already there.
    Beasts:
Early Game: Hawking I in the Hawking System. By the early game, I mean when leveling slows down because you're so leveled, you need an amplifier.
Look for the long necked Flocking Marnokk Herbavore in the Frozen Dunes Biome. Land on Very Hard (critical).
You can see them from miles away. Shoot one. They ALL come from everywhere. Level 80 beasts. Herbivores give less exp and don't argo as easily as a predator, but these are dangerous in numbers.
    Bring bullets; lots of bullets.
Late stage character leveling. I still use Hawking I, but I added a second one with a duel purpose.
Introducing Schrodinger III Starbase (ship building outpost), Schrodinger System on the obvious planet. Hills Biome.
Build a landing pad with a small windmill for power and a sleeping bag (exp boost). Sprint into the woods and scan for the elusive and very dangerous Swarming Foxbats. Up to level 110. There is also a high exp herbivore there. They are mortal enemies.
    Hunt carefully stealthman.
Later, you will add 6 animal husbandry huts to your base camp. Breed the now scanned Foxbats.
Build these huts in that biome. It will also draw the wild ones in. Land, work on your Star Eagle (Cuthbert Mark II), named after my favorite character in Stephen Kings Gunslinger series, apt name indeed).
Don't just sit and farm the huts. Use it as a way point for ship building and learning outpost basics. I shoot the huts, then hunt the hills and leave after working on my ships.
A ship builder landing pad consolidates ship parts, most of them, from all vendors in the universe. Except for experimental engines, etc.
    Stealth again. Bullets again.
If I want a couple of skill points, this is my goto place. But don't just farm. Go learn to play Starfield.
Sorry for the spam. Triggered a bit I quess.

    • @Striderspawn
      @Striderspawn 6 месяцев назад

Addendum: A level 1 ship with a level 300 player is still level 1.
I play everywhere on Very Hard. Build a ship that is your equal.
You will melt everything. I have to turn certain weapon systems off if I plan on boarding.
So they don't disappear in an unwanted explosion.

+500 damage resistance, both weapon archetypes.
100% Power Recovery - 5 minutes (lasts most firefights)
I use that on 1 hot-key. It's the water-of-life (Dune). If my stealth is broken, I hit it.
I'm doing fitness now. But I'd focus on Reseach first. I did fitness after the ship branch of skills. I love space fights. But remember this. A level 200 player in a level 1 ship is... level 1.
Do the questline branch in the Cheyenne system. You get a great ship free. Then just search on how to evolve it; low, middle, and end game.
Most people are scared of space battles in Starfield. Don't be. Did weapons and reseach first. Then I built my ship, evolving it. You become OP pretty quickly.
Now, outposts and oddities in physical. Turns out outpost building is fun.

I'm not a Bethesda fan boy. But I am a 67 year old Skyrim fan boy. I played Skyrim since Special Addition came out and 95% of that play time is a modded Skyrim. But Starfield? Well, I was hopeful that an 8 year development would ultimately give us a polished game. I played 74.5 hours over 3 weeks and uninstalled it. I give the game a 4.5/10 and that's for the art department because the game looks pretty good. Excepting water.
The game was over hyped, falsely advertised (simply listen to Todd explaining all the cool exploration we can't do), horrible optimization, no immersion, uses a crap engine, totally crap UI, bug filled, glitch filled, crashes, repetitive, boring, broken stealth, horrible perk system, janky base building (with little instruction), janky ship building (with little instruction), copy/pasted POI's, absolutely dreadful and contradictory companions who don't care who or what you are other than you're important and get in your way if they're part of your ships crew, no-name citizens that walk back and forth on an invisible tether and many times get in your way, weak main and side missions, overloaded cut scenes and load screens, mediocre gun play with bullet sponge targets that remind me of 2007's S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl. Really bad circa 2011 AI. There are no real role playing choices with consequences. Any choice you make still takes you on the direction Bethesda wants you to take. Thus, the traits and abilities you pick in character generation have little to no benefit. There is no depth or relevance to this game and its components. This game has no role playing despite it being labeled an RPG.
This game has no soul. There's no hook like the opening of Skyrim or Fallout 4. The cringe writing is testament to this. The mind-shattering and pivotal reveal of the game is not mind-shattering or pivotal. It has no effect on your characters needs or wants; in short it's fraking broken. Nothing can fix this now other than a complete rewrite of at least the first act but then, either way, it's just too late. How can the player get excitedly involved in the artifacts? Why? There's no reason to do so other than to just simply do it. Why are the Starborn doing the same thing? Because...reasons we're never privy to. Why is every member of Constellation expecting you to jump through Unity and leave everything in your current universe behind, even perhaps your wife or girlfriend or husband? What manner of non-empathy to anyone must Constellation members have? How is going through Unity a boon or change to humanity? Or even to your character?
The junk items you can pick up are pointless, extremely underwhelming carry weight, arbitrary level farming to mend/boost your XP/perks/ money, vendors with little money, NO MAPS, companions scolding you one after the other because you chose the dialog Bethesda didn't want you too, more loading screens in five minutes of play than the entirety of Elden Ring, 300 years of human fiction with nothing to really show for it, no challenging locations or bosses worthy of the name or worthy to fight. And no reason to actually make an outpost to farm stuff because you can simply purchase it at a vendor unless you want to pad your levels. A "2023 next gen game" with 2006 water graphics?
Starfield is fundamentally flawed on so many levels. It is NOT open world. It's plagued with bad game design decisions, half baked systems, bland & uninspired writing and outdated quest design. It isn't "Skyrim in Space", nor is it "Fallout in Space". Starfield is a downgraded, mediocre and soulless mixture of Skyrim & Fallout 4, without the free world exploration and the charm of neither. It's a regression from Bethesdas previous titles in all aspects and the saddest part is that it took them 8 years to create this piece of mediocrity with unparalleled boredom. Mario Cart is more fun than the spaceship battles in Starfield.
What's even worse is that devs had ALL the creative freedom to write whatever the hell they wanted; there is no established lore that restricts them from going crazy. And yet they went for the most banal unimaginative take on sci-fi. Funny thing with Londinium - I decided to try landing randomly on the planet, ignored the UC ship telling me to stay away and menu clicked my way down there. As soon as I got out, another random ship came a few hundred metres away, as they do. I wandered over, found it was a Freestar Ship that had landed at a "small settlement" or something like that. On Londinium. The planet that was quarantined because it was over-run with monsters. Sigh. Later, I’m desperate to complete the main quest so I can finally uninstall. I made it to the buried temple - which is of course just another copy paste junkyard. Sarah said she wanted to speak to me and told me that Barrett was worried about her back at the lodge. Well, Barrett fraking died on the Eye when the Hunter attacked about 30 hours ago! What little immersion I had left was instantly taken away! TLDR; Abysmal writing.
The worst part is they made a world (worlds) that were already explored. It all feels like we were late to the party. Every planet is littered with copy/pasted factory’s and outposts, you are never more than a 1000 meters from a structure. The whole colonial war already happened and you just get to hear about all the cool interesting events that already occurred. No matter how far you go, there are almost always humans waiting for you there. Even the plants & wildlife that you need to scan already have names. Therefore, locations have already been discovered in the past.
What really burns my backside is that New Game + merely allows you to replay the game over again with the same or different companions; ie., Sarah becomes a potted plant, all the Constellation members are children and I think the very worst is all the Constellation members are you with different personalities (and that's to name just three of the 10 or so variations you get). Not only that, when it comes to the writing and consequences of going through the Unity, Sam Coe's questline revolves around restoring a relationship with Cora's mother, Lillian Hart, yet when it comes to the Unity, Sam shows not the slightest consideration of Lillian in allowing young Cora to go through the Unity. I would think she would be devastated. Also, if you do NG+ to bring all 24 powers to level 10, that means you'd have to jump through 1200 glowy-glitter things in 240 temples. No, thanks.
This game was labeled as "Next generation" gameplay? Don't stop to think Bethesda will fix anything other than the most egregious problems and that modders can "fix" the game when Bethesda won't. I've come to the realization that the game is fundamentally flawed in a way that no mod or update can actually fix. It's the base level structures of the game that are so unappealing. Modders can come very close to it, but I don't see that as a modders unpaid job. An example would be that modders made Skyrim better. But they didn't "fix" it. As I sit now with 74.5 hours into Starfield, I honestly don't think I'll ever play this game again. At least not without a Cyberpunk 2.0 and DLC type upgrade or a complete rewrite.
And this Bethesda mediocrity has me very worried for Elder Scroll 6. Don't settle for mediocrity.

Anyone commenting “You must have low standards if you like this” are being extremely childish and need to touch grass. People are allowed to have opinions, and when you are dealing with art (video games), there is a lot of subjectivity in the discussion. Starfield is nowhere near as bad as everyone is pretending it is, and it does what no other space game could: combine a ton of different systems and mechanics into one complete package that it greater than the sum of its parts. A game does not need to be perfect or a 10/10 to be fun, and Starfield is a perfect example of that.
It has a few glaring issues, but anyone giving it lower than a 6/10 or higher than an 8.5/10 is either nitpicking every little thing and shouldn’t be taken seriously or a fanboy who also shouldn’t be taken seriously. In a similar vein, you shouldn’t listen to anyone telling you that you have “low standards” for liking something they don’t. Honestly though, what did I expect from people who are terminally online and get all their opinions from YT and Reddit?

      @skyriminspace It's a byproduct of two factors.
      1) Social media's impact on games and perceptions. Starfield released at very favorable levels. Overlay time factoring in Tubers who earn a living bashing everything and the Steam rating decline matches their rhetoric perfectly. They attack every game, almost, and a few escape them. Baldor's Gate 3 is a rare exception.
      2) Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda. Instant inter-console rivalry brings trolls in mass.
I've played every Bethesda title, and some people get very creative remembering how great they were
How Fallout was full of surprises and unending action. I remember running across an expanse of desert bored. Oh, give me a balanced thruster pack!
Hard for anything to remain excellent over time with social media acting as overlords on quality issues. There are exceptional Tubers of course.

And then you try to be positive about something and get that wrong too! The Mantis quest is the second-biggest anticlimax I've discovered in the game! Maybe if you do it early doors it's better. However, the Mantis equipment and ship are already outclassed by what the average player will be rocking by around level 20+, and the suit looks stupid too! Plus it's never mentioned again - if this Mantis was such a legend I'd expect some Mantis-unique speech options later on, especially when dealing with the Crimson Fleet...

You’re entitled to your opinion, but let’s not pretend that any of these games does everything that Starfield packs into one. Starfield doesn’t do any one thing better than those games, but its total package includes much more and makes it greater than the sum of its parts in my opinion.
Over time, the game will improve, especially from DLC/updates, and we’ll see the game getting better and better. Liking the game has nothing to do with “low standards”, just as I’d never say someone else had low standards for enjoying NMS early on in its lifecycle. Starfield does a lot right, but certainly has flaws. The thing is, a game doesn’t need to be perfect to be fun. That’s what Starfield is (and lots of games are)-flawed fun.

The issue with this game is the fact that it is a AAA game, made by a studio that has done better. They spent so much money and time on something that came out as a game that would be good/impressive 5/6 years ago. In the end it is just underwhelming and disappointing from a studio that is so big. Other devs have shown that big games having game breaking bugs at launch, that have 10 loading screens per mission is a thing of the past. The main mission is generic and boring after doing it the first time. Is it a trash game as of the likes of Gollum? No. But at the same time now one had been looking forward towards that game for years. Starfield has just shown how far behind Bethesda is lagging behind in terms of story telling, graphics and gameplay compared to other AAA studios. They have become lazy with their games and have now surpassed by other devs. All their last games has really shown how much they have become too generic. Redfall was a flopp, fallout 76 was a shit show, and even Fallout4 was not what people wanted for the sequel to Fallout 3 and Fallout new vegas. There was a lack of unique dialog while they boast about a bigger world. A world that there is nothing in.

Some of the worst and limited weapon variety in Bethesda history. They even fucked up zero G combat. You just float but you can't twist and turn like you should be able to in zero G. Smuggling is virtually non existent so goodbye han solo dreams. You can join every and any faction and nobody seems to care or wonder, even if you're part of the pirates. Nearly every NPC is unkillable while making their personalities so intolerable that you wish you could kill them. It's an awful experience. I was so hyped for it and here I am left with nothing good to say about it. Why make a space game when you can't even do space stuff right? They would have been better off making a different game entirely. The fact they put what? 400 million into this game is just sad. Todd has been talking about his dream space game since 2006 and I've been waiting for it since then. If this is it, then that dream truly is dead. I'm sorry for Todd, honestly. @@AngryCosmonaut You're being disingenuous or don't genuinely know how bad the statistics are. Let me fill you in. Despite breaking records in sales and having the highest starting player count of any Bethesda game ever, Starfield after a few months has fewer players than Skyrim, Fallout 4, and even Fallout 76. That's unprecedented. You can't say it happens to "all" Bethesda games when the exact ones you source are currently doing better than it. If Starfield truly has the same falloff as the prior games, explain how Starfield is doing far worse than those same games?

Load Screen Simulator , er, I mean Starshite is the most boring load of old bollocks ever. And then the audacity of Bugthesda to admonish their player base by telling them that its not boring amd that they are playing it wrong was the ultimate slap in the face. There is no hope for Elder Scrolls 6 being any good if they don't change their attitude. And don't even get me started on the play dough putty faced NPC's with their coma inducing dialogue. The NPC's in Oblivion looked more realistic and that's saying something ! Exploring which is the bread & butter of Brokethesda games is painfully absent here. 1000 cut & paste planets full of nothing but empty procedural generated nonsense. What a load of trash.

Considering even now how they messed up the Fallout 4 next gen update really does make it concerning what the future holds for their upconing titles. As I said I liked Starfield, but don't get me wrong it's far from perfect and does show a worrying trend.

    I love Starfield.
But it's like an onion. You need to peel it back layer by layer.
    What killed its reputation:
    1) Thinking NG+ 10 is the goal. Some are doing this at silly low levels. It's not the objective, and it's a 400 artifact/power journey of tedium and boredom.
    2) Social media and Tubers who love to amplify a negative and never look for a positive.
Having liberally played to unlocking every skill by playing, not exploiting. I can say this.
It's the best offering from Bethesda so far. For me.
I speak from extensive experience since I retired from the industry (Rockstar Studios West) and have played every one of their games.
Addendum: The Microsoft Acquisition of Bethesda and cross-console wars threw fuel on the fire. Trolls came in droves; naysayers on a mission.

P.S. - You can always craft armor far better than any Starborn suit. Always.
I've seen level 400 compltionists (NG+ x10), and they are not wearing Starborn armor.

Ah, yes, "the players just don't know how to properly play the game."
Hmm... well, someone who owns a growing business and is hiring employees and making expansion plans... I can identify some flaws in your model, there.
I have a game library full of $20 and $30 games I've yet to give a proper shakedown. I'll admit, Starfield is not one of them. I even got two copies along with my purchase of computer components - not registered. Why? Because I saw this coming from Skyrim. Skyrim was a step backward from Oblivion in many ways. Fallout 4 did a bit better because the "Special" acronym was too central to the game's legacy to completely abandon the concept of communication skills - but the fact we get a power armor suit and a fight with a deathclaw as a part of the first available story arc indicates where the minds of developers were at. If it weren't for the settlement system, the game would have basically imploded. Were it not for the concept of Elder Scrolls universe lore and the idea of exploring wilderness/nordic themes, Skyrim would have imploded. Oblivion started on that trend a bit, but had some solid and interesting side quests to dabble in the lore - and Shivering Isles is the single best thing Bethesda has ever presided over.
To put this into perspective - Valheim is quite popular and is basically Skyrim's themes in a crafting-survival loop. All an enterprising company would have to do to hit a grand slam is to take valheim, develop a world with some lore and quests around it with some towns and stuff, expand the diversity of critters and crafting a bit, and it would be palworld levels of success on SuperNirn.
Replayability is not how many times I can play through the story. It's how much I would be interested in booting the game back up.
When I tell people to watch Madoka Magica, I tell them to give it 3 episodes or so because it's lead-in is a bit different from most things my peers watch and they'll understand why I recommended it by episode 3-4. If I have to tell someone "you need to watch all the episodes, then you'll like it" - then the show has failed to appeal to them. While this can be due to many factors and someone can later return and find they like it - if 96% of viewers drop out by episode 10 and aren't interested in watching more - there's probably something about the show, not the viewers, destroying their interest in returning.
Look - there are very fancy and expensive art shows where people turn their hair into helicopters or inflate dresses to balloons and emerge from the synthetic flatulence in "a unique display" that us down here in the underhive can't hope to comprehend the beauty or sense of.
For whatever reason, people with the means to do so spend disproportionately large sums of money for such things so as to justify the business.
You have to appeal to your market, and those of us not accepted into the ivory spire of Laputia just have much lower minds not interested in the pearls cast before us swine. Bethesda needs to add a few more zeros to the end of their game prices and market it to people who have the class to comprehend such refined values.
Or return to their roots in the underhive.
Provided their goal is to be a successful business in the longer term, at least.
To be fair, part of their problem is a lack of design documents which radically complicates larger scale products as no one knows what will and will not be a part of the game/story/engine to link into. So it's more like they need to learn the basics of workplace coordination so they can figure out what their game/story is in the first place - let alone how to make it good.

One of the best games I've ever played, Problem with the negative reviews is duo to 2 things, Playstation fanboys who wants it to fail, and Skyrim fans who don't like space even, I remeber when CoD IW came out, the reveal trailer was at that time the 2nd most hated video on youtube, before the game was even released it was doomed, IW had superb campaign and MP, Space is a niche genera, not as popular as medieval fantasy or moder day setting.
TLDR: Game is epic, reviews are to be ignored
