My garden is ancient, I've always had the vinyl covered 5 foot fencing around the garden. For years no critters, except chip monks (I think nipping tomatoes for a drink) in drought years bothered my garden. One year all my green beans were mowed down when they were about a foot tall???. So I put a security night cam on the plants. A baby rabbit was able to jump right through the 2x4 inch squares of the fence. So I added 2 foot vinyl covered chicken wire around the fence and never had a problem again. Only issue is that fall leaves get in between the fence and it is a pain if you care about removing them.
I don't even know you personally, but I am just SO PROUD of you! I have been watching you from the beginning and you have truly created something so amazing and have taught so many people how to grow healthy food in such a bountiful way, it's just wonderful. And this video was PACKED with excellent information! Thank you and God bless you!! ❤❤❤ for the Boss, too!
Loved seeing you give your little boss a drink. My dog is such a water hound, if he saw you watering your garden with a hose, he'd be right there, climbing into the middle of the operation, so you couldn't even see where the end of the hose is. lol Thanks for the summer check list.
I live in southern Oregon. We moved into a rental that had raised garden beds. I haven’t done much gardening but I planted tomatoes & herbs, some squash and lavender. I’m hoping we get a a good harvest. By the way I’m 74 but I thought I would try.
A couple of years ago we field tested Surround, gauze wrap, and foil on dozens of squash plants. Gauze seemed to be the most consistent repellent against borers in our area (Maryland 7b (now 8a)). We still apply Surround to all cucurbits but wrapping the base and 8-12" of lower stem with gauze has eliminated borer issues completely.
I awakened my dormant garden this spring, after a 20+ year break. i have had enormous harvests already this year, inspired by you and Tuck. I wore my new Food Forest shirt tonight while harvesting. Your attitude and advice are inspirational!
James, could you make a video explaining the importance of placing your planters facing the right direction in relation to the movement of the sun? I think that would be a great topic to discuss. Love your tomatoes too! Your harvest is going to be legendary.
Depends on what you’re trying to grow and how. I assume you want maximum sun exposure? That would probably be in lines north to south. I like experimenting with all directions because the volunteer veggies find the best spot
I love eatching your videos. You are so energized and filled with enthusiasm. I have learned so much from you. This year is my first full garden, growing tomatoes, pumpkin, red onions, zucchini, vutternut squash, okra, eggplant, string beans, pole beans, bush beans, corn, cantaloupe, peppers, herbs and watermelon. I started with a lot but I have learned so much watching you and other videos. It is a lot of work keeping up with everything. However I have made a chart for each vegetable and I record all of my tasks for each. It is a lot of fun and my vegetables are doing well. The most difficult ones are the tomatoes but I have mastered them and rhey are producing and foing well. Another challenge are the cucumbers. They were beautiful until I began pruning. Now they look weak. I will continue to study them. Thank you for all that you do.
About the pruning.....I was told from another video never prune anything. Nature does not prune so we shall not also. How disappointing.. because I have pruned everything, and yes the plants look weaker now.
@@kijihigh6826When pruning it is only for a Larger(quantity) Harvest. You want FRUIT Not MORE FOLIAGE. 3:00 hahah what i find hysterical is that my first couple of years gardening i did zero research.. literally would put like 10-15 seeds in well about a square foot area.. i had so much growing i didnt know what to do.. today ive tried to be more reserved because of all the research i had done saying you only need 1 or 2 seeds.. etc.. fact is, i do that, then walk away, they barely grow, then the seeds i have for another year or two or three never seem to get to the same level.. i think sometimes we need to let our instincts take over when doing things.. i think gardening has been in my family history for generations, my dad used to grow tomatoes, my moms side grandparents and his parents would garden.. now i struggle by trying to do it the "right way" time to go back to basics! Thanks James for showing that even though your setup is elite, it doesnt take complicated formulas to get there, just enjoy it!
For white flies, which I got early this year, and aphids I've used a a mixture of 1-2 tsp peppermint oil, 1 TBs plain castle soap to one gallon of water. Amazing results! Shake sprayer often
Today, I saw the squash vine borer in my garden. It was thirsty and was getting a drink from the bird bath, probably right after it laid eggs. I liked the tip to put soil over the bottom of the plant. I’m starting my second round of squash, cucumbers, melons and brassicas this week. I’m in zone 6. Thank you. 😊 Your garden looks beautiful as always.
Growing food is simply…quietly….amazing. My problem is that I never knew when some of these things are ripe….like eggplants. Another great video, thanks!
A simple task? The heat index has been near 100° in Tennessee the last two weeks. And brushing against the plants in my garden makes me itch like crazy. Every visit in the garden requires a shower afterward. And if I have to eat one more zucchini, I'm going to turn green.
I make zucchini refrigerator pickles- my husband loves them. Also lemon zucchini bread, dark chocolate zucchini bread, and lasagna with zucchini “noodles” yum!
Thank you for the in depth pollinating tip. Seeing it done and the explanation of male and female flower identification is super helpful! And I just ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Tuck! He's so adorable 😍
James, thanks for giving great advice for us who live south. I used to pick the suckers off the tomatoe plants , but I'm in TN . It's good to know that I don't need to do it. Thanks again!!! I love to see Tuck in the videos!!!❤❤❤❤

Love your passion for gardening. I like the way you grow your tomatoes up those ropes, I'm gonna try that instead of growing ours up tall posts. Why not top dress the tomatoes with compost? Can I ask what you are gaining by putting fertilizer on them?I've never used anything but compost containing a small amount of aged manure and liquid calcium made from egg shells for tomatoes. Just because of availability I've never had to add really anything but lime to adjust ph, compost/manure, and mulch to the garden. We have an abundance of mushroom compost, general organic compost, chicken and goat manure so I just use what we have. Again though love ur excitement to garden and the time you spend with your plants. The world needs more of this!
Hi James, thanks so much for going over pruning tomatoes again. I'm a first year grower, and have been doing what people say, prune the bottoms. But I made the mistake of letting my seedlings grow together and they wouldn't come apart so I now have "jungle buckets" of 2-3 plants a bucket (lol). They are going massively wild and fruiting to boot. So I have been doing what you're showing, letting the sucker thrive and trim the traffic.
