- Oooh an Audi! Of course there is a whole list of trouble codes on this one, MAF, fuel trims, misfires...all the good stuff.
Let's at least try to make the Audi wagon driveable again :)
Enjoy!
Ivan
Thank you Ivan for your time and work.
With a faulty coil there wiil be raw fuel going out of the cylinder but unconsumed oxygen as well. And this is what the O2 sensor primarily is looking for. So the result will be a sensor reporting a LEAN condition causing a POSITIVE fuel trim. once again thank you.
That's what i have seen on any other car, but those Germans might have a different strategy up their sleeve ;) Just ask Keith from New Level Auto!!
That is correct. Cars have sensors to measure O2 in the exhaust, not unburned fuel. When the fuel is not burned on a misfire, the O2 usually consumed is in the exhaust stream, which the O2 sensor reacts to and then the ECM 'thinks' it's a lean condition. And pulls fuel out.
Ivan is like a brain surgeon, the best, and I am a new sub. I guess I love to watch a real mechanic for a change, thanks for doing your videos we enjoy them.
Hi John, thanks for the comment! Welcome to the channel!
Did you do another video for follow up for the fuel trims codes Ivan? Just curious if that mas was the cause.
Well done, Ivan. Sometimes you can pick up on a bad MAF sensor by tapping on it while observing the waveform on a scope.
tapping and vibration works well at times
Oem's nearly always deliver. The paddle is handy for quick diagnosis and to be able to identify the odd ones out. Full marks for trying to retrieve the maf readings from the freeze frame.Hard to credit the price of the replacement coils. That engine was transformed and sounded mean in the finish. Great fix and lucky customer.
Ivan. I agree that is a sweet wagon. Can you elaborate on what is happening in open loop and then closed loop? Can you do a video on fuel trims? I still don't understant exactly how the o2 sensors work. Thanks.
I always enjoy watching which direction to take on case studies. This one was more straightforward (so far) but I wanted to comment on the scanners. When the Snap-On wouldn't display freeze frame data, was that a limitation of the vehicle or of the scanner? The reason I ask is that I have many cheaper scanners and a lot of the times when I'm experimenting with them I get "Not Supported". I'm looking forward to the next video.
Good one young man, we used to do lots of thoses coils app 5-6 years ago, not so much any more, but they were really cheap, we charge about £40 that's about $46 each, looking forward to part 2, cheers buddy
I have not seen the whole video but I know it will be great . Thank you Ivan I have learned a lot from you .
Ivan,
Great video and diagnosis as always! Thank you.
God bless
Paul
Thanks for the comment as always, Paul!
Wow cool tool to check coils. Nice. Great work again
Great Video Ivan💪
Hi Dan so you got back from Germany, sobber I hope? LOL cheers bubby looking forward to your next Video
@@kennypatrol2zero616 I'm never Sober🤣🤣🤣
Ivan, that MAF should max out a little more than 150.
And i think these coils still have an open recall 😬
Another nice video. Do you have any opinion on the paddle probe you used vs, the OTC induction probe? I use the OTC and wondered if the paddle worked better.
High voltage and heat are going to cause break down over time with a coil on plug buried in the hot engine. Coil near plug with 6 inch coil wires like the 5.3 GM are no problem with higher mileage. COP coils are just the new version of replacing plug wires. Thanks for the comparison waveforms between different coils.
That paddle probe looked suspiciously like a fly swatter...
The most expensive Fly swatter ever!
Thxs Ivan great lesson, now for the follow up..
Ivan, what brand paddle probe is that? Where can I get one?
AESWave.com :)
I just received it in the mail from AES wave. Cant wait to play with it.
Thank you Ivan. Good job. I appreciate your videos.
Hi thanks. Is it possible that. The ECU will enrich bank side mixture based on one cylinder misfiring and also the O2 sensor being fast enough to identify the same. Your test equipment too has limits so if you have a high number of parameters monitored the resolution of the display result will be less detailed. Also diagnosis of a fault will be misreported???
So lucky to get another video from you so soon. Not all the way though it yet, but I agree with everything so far and would've done it all the same up to wanting to throw in 3 coils.
In surprised some codes came back! Looking forward to the follow-up!
first i get to watch your amazing videos, now i get to watch ivan. super excellent toyota video you did.
When the owner brings it in for a follow up I will be sure to turn on the camera ;)
If that misfire were to cause any fuel trim codes it should be a lean code if anything. I love that paddle probe from Aeswave. It gives me much better results on average than the one that came in the Pico kit. I also like the ecop by ATS. They come with clips that hold them down to the coil for test driving and such. I would buy a full set of those but I don’t agree with some of their business practices.
You can see MAF values via VCDS. I think that's a scanner limitation what you see and what you don't see on the freeze frame data.
You all probably dont care but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb lost my password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@Tyler Micah Instablaster =)
@Collin Kamryn thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Collin Kamryn it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass !
@Tyler Micah no problem =)
Ivan, great video, it does suck to have check engine light back on!!!
One fault fixed, 4123 to go ha ha :)
Perhaps the maf has a crappy connection to the plug, i'm sure you will beat it.
At that price i would replace all the coils too, keep the known working ones on a shelf.
The dead one gets hacked up for fun :-D
zx8401ztv exactly...
I like that paddle probe.
IVAN,thank you for what you do awesome video . cheeeeeers
MAF value was in the freeze frame data all the time hidden under the complex formula of Calculated Load Value PID:
= [current airflow] / [(peak airflow at WOT@STP as a function of rpm) *
(BARO/29.92) * SQRT(298/(AAT+273))]
Where:
- STP = Standard Temperature and Pressure = 25 °C, 29.92 in Hg BARO,
- SQRT = square root
- WOT = wide open throttle
- AAT = Ambient Air Temperature (in °C)
You just have to find for X ..
My best shot at why the low MAF code was triggered is the low RPMs caused by the misfires which evidently threw the formula off thus logic set the code for the main input value
I don't get a lot of European cars but the ones I see always require me to put on my thinking cap!
So is a wide band sensor able to detect fuel? Normally on a ignition misfire you would have lean codes due to the unburnt oxygen not rich codes
Sounds like a dirty MAF and or coil, plug issue. Look for crud on that MAF sensor Ivan. Quite the common problem. Could still be a bad MAF sensor but the crud’s on the sensor is quite common.
Agreed to. Common for VAG made cars. Apart from that this engine is sounding loud to me for a v6
probably ready to play piston and valve crash up derby :))
timing belt, tensioner, idler and other bearings in the path, unless it was changed, even then
Interesting waveforms on the bad coils! Odd looking.
Love that paddle probe - I'm a big fan of anything quick and easy ... AND cheap, but this one falls out of that category ... 😁
Ah come on the coils are the easiest part to replace on this Audi ;)
Yeah, that's extremely true! :)
The last comment you made about rich codes. Remember, the o2 sensor only read oxygen. So if one cylinder was misfiring it would only work as an air pump. The exhaust would get leaner and create lean codes.
Good. Diagnostic. Nice video amigo.
Another cliffhanger from PHAD. Looking forward to part 2.
I'll post up Part 2 when the owner brings it back....might be a while lol
You called it "european....machinery" instead of "eurotrash." The customer must have been in earshot! lol I can't believe the price of those coils. RockAuto FTW! Thanks Ivan!
Just got around to this video, hmm, doesn't 5 and 6 look a little weak on the coil waveform at the end?
nice job love the scopes
Me likey all the new Pine Hollow videos.
*CAUTION: DO NOT REPLACE COMPONENTS ON CODES ALONE*
Translation: PUT DOWN THE PARTS CANNON!! haha
2 vids in a row with parts required ? only kidding lol
he's slipping up not rebuilding everything Russian style! :))))
An Audi is just a VW with the collar turned up. They're fun cars though 👏
When working on European vehicle use either Autel or Launch Scan Tool
Always VCDS for VW/Audi. Doesn't break the bank either, especially for these older ones.
Moral of the story: fix the misfire first.
naw, always parts canon thousands first, then fix the most basic things the engine needs last :))
sounds timing component "loud" to me via camera also....
Maf readinh is a bit low. Normal is 4 g per sec at idle. Probably needs replacing.
Those cars also have codes for egr systems (their own type) that often show up and cleaning the combi valves may fix the fuel trims roo.
If MAF was reading too low at idle, then fuel trims would be way positive in closed loop. That fact right there PROVES that the MAF was reading correctly!!
It's Bluetooth dammit!!!(just in case)
I have a Nissan Xterra 2000 when it's hot outside it will crank but no start. When it does start and I drive it shut it off, it won't start again until it cools down. The dealership couldn't find out what is wrong with it! Change the ignition coil, temperature gauge, spark plugs and spark plug wires
I'd be looking for a dirty MAF, faulty MAF heater circuit or just poor MAF circuit connecton ? The plot thickens !
I have multiple misfires and not always on the same cylinders on my 2005 Yukon XL 2500 6.0L have you ran across anything like this before ? Also there is a whistle noise in the intake somewhere. We have done a smoke test. And can't find that annoying whistle under acceleration
Needs a tune-up ;)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics did that and didn't make a difference
Smells like MAF (16486 Signal too Low) bad connection. Start at this?
How does Scanner D do the in-screen scope and scan tool video box when he’s recording?? You need to get that capability!
Screen record, then overlay in video by removing the background color of the verus screen. OBS is a free program that will screen record and will run on the verus. The video editing software then needs to blend the 2 videos.
$17 a piece!? What a bargain. It would be cheaper for me to buy them from you and have them shipped out here to Straya mate....we get so ripped off here.
Audi Estate,nice car 🚗
What happened on the follow up Ivan?
Nice! 👍 A whole video without blasting the German make, well done! Better fix’em than complain, right? 👍😁 Leave the complaining to the comments section,to people that have no clue about these cars besides the Scotty brainwashing. Lol!
bah, euro trash is still euro trash :))
and Scotty Killsmore cars than all
+throttle bottle probably that 3.0 has more hp than a 6.0 domestic 😁😁
Ouch, an Audi. Pull out the checkbook and cash the CDs.
Ding ding ding - close the damn door
Hi Ivan , another great video buddy these are a great car very popular over here in England & Europe it’s a shame you Americans don’t get to see the diesel models I have driven a 2.5 V6 diesel over 250,000 miles, was absolutely brilliant very reliable and economical giving over 40mpg. With the best build quality. I don’t get it with you Yanks cursing the European cars because the worst I’ve had was an American car. .Most American cars seem poorly built & put together. I now have a new Audi A6 allroad and again is one of the best cars I’ve ever had
Wow 40mpg that's great! These V6 gasoline engines get about 20mpg...on Premium fuel!!
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics, great to hear back from you Ivan! I’m a big fan of your videos! yes 40 mpg is pretty good going for a big station wagon, We call it an estate car here in England! Say hello to your wife It’s great seeing her on the videos and the last time I saw her was on the Nissan transmission change, Hope to see more of here as she seems a great lady!
OK. O2 looks for O2 not HC. Stupid lean, runs out of fuel before O2 which makes it to the sensor. Stupid rich, combustion doesn't occur, O2 makes it to the sensor. What am I missing? Serious question.
Stupid lean, runs out of fuel before O2. Stupid rich, runs out of O2 before fuel is a better way to think of it.
two minute check with the gtc505 tool.
I can already hear Scotty Kilmer saying this Audi is an endless money pit
If that thing is over 100k Id for sure be advising the customer about timing belt replacement. Friend of mine had an 03 a6 with 3.0 and his timing belt broke.
He's already had major engine work done to it...it ate a camlobe and needed a camshaft and a head? Weird lol
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics and he still didn't learn.?
Sell sell sell!
So "you'll be back"!
why not change all coils to new and use others as spares?
Thanks for the vid
Sounds like a bad mass air sensor, coils, brakes, links, spark plugs, gasket, oh heck just replace EVERYTHING! :)
20:00 Cue the push mower.
thanks u sir , I wanna more learn
Keep watching!
WHERE IS THE NEXT VID WITH THIS CAR!??
Where do i get one of them paddle things
AESWave.com
What is it called exactly i cant find it
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🌷
That Audi is just a deluxe VW with a VW engine. My neighbor paid 50k for a Q5. I told him that it was made in Mexico by workers making $2.00 an hour and those chromed dual exhausts are phony. Not connected to anything. Look under the back and you see a single little round exhaust pipe all by itself, pointing down.
Wow must add like 50hp xD
It adds $500 to the profit margin by impressing the buyer. Just the Audi name is worth thousands over a VW.
The shift to production in Mexico for the Q5 has been a disaster for Audi. We're seeing so many problems at the dealer during the routine pre-delivery inspections. Engines blowing up with less than 100 miles. Such a shitshow.
Stanny1 lmao...
B5 and C5 (this A6) is before that faux era. They are all Volkswagens regardless. This was also made in Germany/Poland for western markets only.
Eric o calls it the "virus" for a reason
B5 ? That is one big can of worms, diagnoses wise and repair wise
A6 they call it the C5. A bit Different subframe, but otherwise pretty much identical to B5.
New tool: paddle probe
that suck .when there no history on a code .thank for video
i just thought of something--the chinese make cheap copies of everything! what's to stop them from copying those coil packs and putting little "denso" labels on them?? answer: nothing!
In China they have such dire problems with counterfeits that even the hospitals can't tell if the drugs they buy are actually drugs or just saline solution or sugar pills. If you ever go to China and get sick anyone with any sense gets to Hong Kong or Singapore as fast as possible for treatment.
More times than not freeze frame is pretty much useless. It seems like every time you look the pids you want to see aren’t recorded lol
Using the wrong spark plugs will kill the ignition coils. There are unpublished specifications on plugs so stick with the FACTORY ORIGINAL PLUGS.
same as not changing them often.... ;)
should say I've had bad Autolite plugs right out the box and not just the cheapest ones, you have to pre-screen them lol
Scotty Kilmer: European Cars out of warranty: "Endless Money Pits".
usa cars, 10 to the gallon, money pit from day 1
It's actually not that bad when you take care of them.
Anything that breaks cost thousands. I have 3 Priuses. A new tail light on Amazon is $70. Try that on any Mercedes or BMW.
i have a european ford, i break a taillight, its 18£ on amazon, try that on any american gas guzzler, oh and it does 50mpg
True, but if you are in America and have an American car, it should be easier to get a replacement part. The Prius is a special case in that the body was the same from 2004-2009. So many sold that aftermarket suppliers are competing with replacement product. And one of the factors for car insurance is repair costs including parts costs. It pays to buy a car that is popular so parts are out there. If you buy a limited production model, you are doomed.
Nothing wrong with Autolites, the problem is it's an Audi.
I'm surprised you never got VAGCOM with all these Krautwagons you work on Ivan.
Really disappointing freeze frame data provided by Audi there. Not very helpful at all. Denso parts on a German car offends me.
Oooh Audi I would run, not a big fan of the german junk.
If this a no parts fix with a paper clip a solder iron and some jb weld you are god lol .
I will watch it later to find out :-)
to be continued.........................
I'm surprised Audi uses Denso. But anything made in Japan is superior. Actually, very little is made in Japan. They farm out production to China and Vietnam like we do because Japanese labor is expensive.
are those snapon sunglasses lol
WalMart special ;)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics , you are the "Terminator!". LOL
Странная логика. Хотя ниче удивительного. С таким допотопным мотор тестером. Сразу видно где ты учился. Ваша подготовка отличается от нашей.
Dear god that chime is annoying!
It's an Avant, don't call it a WAGON.
guess they shouldn't have made it a "wagon" design then.......
So FAAANCY!
WHY oh WHY did mgrs go to Coil- overs ?
when once STD distributor ignition function so well AND EASILY diagnosed and repaired cost effectively??
why are Japanese coil overs usually more reliable then eurotrash units?
have decade old Mazda coil overs STILL good-and BASKET of VW scrap units ~ ??????
EXPENSIVE MULTIPLE coil-overs usually mounted on top of HOT PLUGS ,so fail easily, from heat AND vibration
-where single distributors and COIL(s) are mounted AWAY from engine,so USUALLY run COOLER
and both caps and coil(s) and wiring easier - and cheaper, to replace
am I "missing" something? ( pun intended )
Individual coils have the ability to have more saturation time to build spark voltage, as compared to one coil trying to fire however many number of plugs. Plus, ignition systems now have a little higher voltage which allows more efficient fuel burn. I hear you on the heat issue though being on top of the motor, it does seem to cause issues at times. I have seen older vehicles that have a single coil get tired though, causing hard start, extended crank times, etc.
have you not replaced many faulty coil packs and wires in the past?
and I mean factory stuff that should be good with under 30K on them failing, probably chinesium wire manufacturing and/or ROHS. hence coil overs + easier to control per cylinder, equal secondary HV distance to plug etc.
not saying I like it overall for all reasons ;)
Coil over provides more precise ignition timing and less risk of mechanics getting hit with a 50,000 V shock from a bad plug wire.
i had Kettering,Mallory and electronic ignition systems in my > 6v< and 12v cars since late 50's
-where voltage exceeded 40 kv -up to 8000 rpm in 4 cylinder cars
using 75:1 and 100:1 coils
-where most cars until late 70's STILL USED spark ignition cubed coils from Ford model T 1920's days
or 25:1 turns ratio coils -where your comments are INDEED VALID
First 😜
Released the vid early just for you Armando ;)
+Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics ahhahaahahahah thanks buddy!
Aren't European cans fun?
haha always a twist!
Ping ping ping ping ping...... horrible usa specs.
What garbage pos coils are in todays cars lol
