How to replace the battery in a Nextbase 402G dashcam

  • In this video I replace the battery in a Nextbase 402G dashcam, the batter in this dashcam has not worked for several months, which is very annoying because it means the unit does not work correctly, plus most of the data is corrupt! This is a relatively easy fix and costs less than £6 to repair yourself. If I was to do this again, I would just join the wires, rather than soldering onto the PCB, as it would be much easier!

I hadn't used my 402g for about 2 years due to having cataracts and not driving. I had them done and got another car. Then found the camera not working properly, I found this guide and opened the cam to find a swollen battery....Fitted a new one as per instructions and all ok now. Thanks Mr Handyman. I also had a knackered battery on my TomTom sat nav, but that was easier ....no soldering to do there, just plugged in.

This video was an absolute nightmare to edit. I filmed it in the kitchen, then realised afterwards that the kitchen lighting and white background do not go well with my camera. I filmed it in 4k and it took me hours upon hours to edit, due to the massive file size of the video footage. Originally, I exported it in 4k and the file size was 5GB, so then I changed it to HD, which made the file size 500MB. I’m not exaggerating when I say I bet I spent in excess of 40 hours editing this video!
I also could not find my other soldering iron, with the smaller tip 😉
I hope everyone has a great Sunday!

Thanks for posting, I do agree with your last comment about cutting the wire as opposed to de-soldering from the board. Not everyone has a fine tipped soldering iron at their disposal. 👍🏻 appreciate all your vids and are a great reference resource when I want to tackle many different jobs 😊

Thanks for such a useful upload. I have the same model 402G. I bought a 402G about six years ago. It started to act silly about a week after fitting. I contacted Nextbase and they said to try a Sandisk SD Card instead of the one I was using (I can't remember the make of the one I purchased at the same time as the camera from Halfords). The guy at Nextbase said that a Sandisk SD card should cure the problem and it did; he specifically stated that they never have problems with Sandisk SD cards. After about one year the camera started acting up again with the Low Battery message flashing and the thing acting crazy. I contacted Nextbase again and they were extremely helpful. They said to take it back to Halfords and they would exchange it for a new one, which they did; great no-quibble service from Nextbase and Halfords.
Now, six years on the Low Battery message is flashing like crazy again and the thing won't switch off. So thanks for the upload, I will change the battery as per your instructions. In the meantime, because it has become undependable, I've just upgraded to a new Nextbase model 322GW. My old 402G will come in useful in other vehicles when repaired. The new 322GW appears to be a great upgrade and because of the proper support from Nextbase I stuck with them for the upgrade/replacement.
Anyone that now drives a vehicle without a dash-cam needs their head examining I think.
I swear that I have no affiliation in any way whatsoever with Nextbase, Sandisk or Halfords.

That was really helpful, thanks! I've just received a replacement battery for my Nextbase 312GW with no instructions, so your video has given me a good idea of what to do! As you suggested, I'll probably just cut the wires and re-join instead of risking the board. Thanks again.

***More interesting here for me*** is seeing the GPS chip and how easy that could be taken off rather than getting a non GPS holder for the cam. Amazing to see even it you turn GPS tracking off on the camera when you use the Nextbase software to play a vid back it still keeps the GPS tracking embedded in the resulting video so insurers can, if needed, work out the speed of your vehicle in any accident. Great vid m8 :)

Great video. I've just been looking closely at mine as doesn't seem to turn on every time. I suspected that the USB port had been damaged by years of the suction cup failing and the camera falling. But it seems it's not that, so going to replace the battery and see if that solves the problem. I've ordered one the correct dimensions, but it appears that the battery will hold double the charge. Battery tech is getting better.

    Albert Baker
Great tutoring and it set me thinking!
The new battery comes with a 1.25 male connector (I made a mistake, it's a female) which you cut off.
I would leave this connector attached to the battery.
I would cut the wires to the old battery as long as possible.
To the end of these I would attach a male 1.25 plug connector.
This means I can now have the battery working from outside the camera
which saves loads of time if the battery fails again.
It just needs a small slot making to the casing so that the wires are not damaged.
Just use double sided tape or elastic band to attach the battery to the front casing.
Also if you have a spare battery to could use this method to occasionally charge it up.

I didn't know they had a battery, I thought it was a capacitor because once I turn off car the camera turns off within seconds. I have had mine since January 2015 still working fine, have a 64gb card in, when it says only supports 32gb. Wow 40 hours editing that's far too long. I appreciate you taking the time for all your video's

    • @ultimatehandyman

Some dash cams do use a capacitor instead of a battery. Capacitors are better, especially in cold conditions. A few years back I went out in the snow, and thought the footage would be great for showing how good snow tyres work, but unfortunately the dash cam did not film that day, as it was too cold!

Yes your right about they do work better than batteries but obviously most have a limited use once power has gone. Having said that I have heard that capacitors may be way forward for our energy storage needs

Thanks for a good tutorial video!
Need to change battery in my 402G too.
But, when I did open my cam, I noticed that the batterypack was enlarged (or bloated mabye? Dont know what else to call it), so I think that I should remove it right away while I wait for a new battery to arrive.
But, then I wans thinking... I feel that I need the cam in my car (traffic here in Norway is not safe either!), so Im wondering if the cam will function properly without battery unitl I get the new one? Really dont want to use the batterypack that sits in the cam right now. It should be hard and flat, but this is soft and somewhat "inflated".

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  4 года назад +1

I'm not sure, but when my battery failed it was corrupting the data on the SD card, so if you remove the battery completely, it will probably corrupt the data, so you might not have a choice but to leave it in until the new battery arrives.

My 7 in. rear view mirror camera is not cycle recording properly.
It turns on fine and all functions work.
It only records for 11 sec. on the main camera.
The little battery icon on the screen is clear, and no indication of charge, but I never noticed whether it was a charge indicator, or not.
WIll replacing it's battery solve this problem?
Can a dashcam run without the battery?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  5 лет назад +1

With this dashcam, it used to corrupt the data on the memory card. Also, it used to cycle on and off when the ignition was switched on.
If your dashcam is not holding charge, I would imagine that replacing the battery will fix the issues.
