      Maybe if I was still into collecting. Don’t have the time, room or extra money for carts anymore. It’s easier to just build a raspberry pi and load up an SD card with games and use it whenever I need my retro fix.

      Kind of apples and oranges in terms of what that is going to be. If it's anything like Nintendo's offerings it's just going to be an emulator box with some built-in games. Not really aimed at the same kind of audience that would consider something like this.

    The Mega SG not compatible with the Light Gun isn't Analogues fault. The fault is at the LCD screen, not the console. You can plug in a regular SNES or Sega Genesis on modern TV's and you will suffer the same failure. If you use the Light Gun on anything other then the CRT. The Light gun will be unable to read the sudden brightness change in time from the screen and fail. That is why Sensor Bars were made by the newer consoles. it was to fix that problem. In short, 1 MS of input lag is enough to make the light gun unable to capture the sudden flash on a modern LCD Screen.
    That's why Hyperkin's hyper blaster HD. I mods the Duck hunt game to literally Delay the flash from the trigger, so the sensor on the light gun can capture on the LCD screen. Unfortunately, it will only work with Duck hunt, and even then, it has bugs.

    I don’t know if anyone has pointed this out but the audio comparison is kinda botched. The model 2 uses a slightly different model of the same synthesizer chip than the model 1. (The mega Sg has both chips as a setting) so what the sound comparison is really comparing is the original genesis’s sound chip against the model 2 sound chip.

    • @MattMerkle
      @MattMerkle 5 лет назад +2

      The Model 1 isn't really anywhere near the improvement the Mega SG is in audio quality though, and unless you do mods to the console, you have to deal with a noisy headphone jack to get stereo. The Mega SG also doesn't really have a "1/2" switch, it's a full-fledged tunable audio page that lets you do all sorts of great things to the audio to make it better than either original console.

So it can go "Oh, then the player hits their target!"

      That's not the full story. Model 1 has other issues that are often conveniently ignored. Jailbars on the video, and the lack of clean stereo output. One thing I want to mention. You buy Bluetooth controllers, due to the fact they can connect to multiple devices, and have user friendly pairing.
    However, while many will find the 2.4 ghz a disadvantage, for only a le to connect to the plug it comes with. Their is both a reason, and a huge advantage the Bluetooth lacks.........
    They work instantly, like literally only adding like 1ms if input lag.
    Bluetooth on the other hand, have more delay, and retro don't have encoders to optimize and account for the Bluetooth to speed it up.
    This is why they recommend the 2.4 GHz
    Because it's faster, and part of Analogue's marketing is zero delay.

    I appreciate the video and all the effort put in, I really do. But using a model 2 for comparison is a horrible choice. The model 2 was constructed with cheaper components and has far worse audio and video than the model 1. Tbh, my own model 1 has the same quality audio and video as this over RGB SCART running through an HDMI upscaler.
    The extra features are pretty neat though.

    • @MattMerkle

      It's still sharper than RGB and HDMI upscale. But the audio is the biggest improvement. The model 1 typically suffers from jailbars unlike the model 2 as well, meaning there's no such thing as a "perfect" Genesis.

      That's one of the things I love about the Mega SG actually, that they didn't touch on. It has a full suite of audio settings. Including a completely configurable lowpass filter (set to any range you want, on any audio channels you want), a high-res mode, the ability to emulate the "music slowdown" that many are accustomed to on Model 2s, etc.

    2.4G is such a godsend for retro gaming as it has zero lag compared to Bluetooth controllers. Thank god we are finally getting 2.4G controllers from 8BitDo now, as Bluetooth has some pretty significant lag associated with it that is not consistent, while 2.4g RF has no perceivable lag at all. Am kind of surprised that you didn't mention that the 2nd controller was Bluetooth tho, again a lack of general knowledge on this channel.

  • @NostalgicPixel
    @NostalgicPixel 5 лет назад

    I recommend for an audio comparison using a model 1 Genesis. I think you might find there is a difference there. Also nice deeper dive in the controllers but you forgot an important difference and that is input lag of the bluetooth over the 2.4GHz. I think your audience looking to drop amount $200 on a Genesis clone might look at spending that money on an upscaler and RGB cables. They might already have an upscaler but this is just a simpler option. For me I'm waiting on the GameGear adaptor as this seems like a good solution for playing Game Gear games on the TV short of Software emulation.

    The whole sound comparison segment needs a disclaimer that you're using a model 2 Genesis, nearly everything sounded better on the model 1. I think this is where Sega really started lagging behind Nintendo back in the day, they changed their consoles in revisions switching up the chips where Nintendo had one revision at most and often used the same chipsets.

    Something you missed when talking about output is that you ignored that the original sega genesis models did output RGB. Its like component, but calculated differently, and is essentially an analog version of what HDMI outputs. So you can get a clean video output from a genesis (to varying degrees) but it takes more hardware than a simple cable, unless you had access to a CRT TV with a SCART input or a professional CRT monitor with BNC RGB inputs.
    Now that i think about it, it would cost about the same to buy this console as it would to set up a basic RGB to component rig for an original console. you'd have to get something like a SCART to component transcoder and a nice SCART cable plus the price of an original console and any other mods you'd like. like the model 1s had good audio, but an unclear RGB signal (jailbars and a little interference) and latter genesis' had better RGB but varying audio quality, so you'd end up having to install an RGB+Audio bypass board to get perfect quality. i could go on...
    I wanted these Analogue consoles (both the genesis and the SNES) but i wanted to use a CRT tv for peak nostalgia, so i chose to set up some original hardware.
    only thing i really miss from using a console like this is the save states. but then again, i rely on that type of thing too much when i play emulated games.
