  • Do you want ALL of the incredible data having a golf shot tracking system provides? Trust me, it's worth it. But with a few different options to choose from, what's the BEST golf shot tracking system?
There are 3 I'd consider: Arccos Caddie, Garmin CT10, and ShotScope V3 (or X5). All of them are good products, but they each have different strengths and weaknesses that will likely make one the perfect fit for you.
See the full blog post: breakingeighty.com/best-golf-...
Note: As of today (of course), Shot Scope has released their new X5 platform. I'll update with a link when I've reviewed the new product!

Good video, I’ve used both Arccos and Garmin systems and have to say the Arccos is better as of now. Not sure about shotscope. The app, data, user interface of the Arccos system is much better than the Garmin. In addition the ct10 sensors are very sensitive so you have to be careful to keep the sensors pointing down and not have them bang around otherwise it may record it as a shot. Also post round editing is much easier on Arccos.
That being said Garmin has no annual fees and you don’t even necessarily need the ct10 sensors. The approach s62 watch (when you don’t have sensors) will ask you what club you just hit after each shot. So once you set up your bag on the app and pair it you will be able to track your shots without needing the sensors (which solves the sensitive sensor issue and saves you money).
Not to mention the s62 watch is also fully functional smart watch that gives you notifications and a full suite of health tracking features with a number of activities besides golf that you can track.
A friend of mine has the shotscope watch and while the display and data may not be as nice or robust it looks to be a good system that gives you enough to get some good basic data that will help you.

One aspect not mentioned is that some of us are not just focused on golf. I believe Garmin holds around 80% of the GPS market. Athletes who also run, swim, bike, etc. are used to the Garmin ecosystem. I don't, and never would, own a "golf" watch. I have been wearing Garmin multiport watches for 10+ years. The CT10 system simply integrates into the Garmin data along with everything else, including my now vintage Truswing data.I can go directly from looking at my morning run data to my latest swing analysis, my BP and HR trends, or to my last round of golf. All in one app.

Thanks for this comment, and insight Steve! I didn't realize it integrated that well with non-golf Garmin watches, so this is great to know and will keep it in mind for future updates re: the CT10 sensors.

Excellent comparison between the three systems. I've used both Arccos and Shoptscope for some time now, Arccos since it debuted. I use one set with my Pings, and the other with my Mizuno. The V3 Shotscope Watch may be low on stock since the newer X5 has just been released and arrived yesterday. 😁
The Arccos software is by far the easier to use. I like that you can even edit DURING your round, after you finish playing a hole, which means that all shot data is finished/correct before the finished round is uploaded to the Arccos cloud. In the past I've gotten emails from Arccos as to why I was editing rounds so much ( a LOT of missed shots), that did not make me happy, as the emails sounded almost accusatory. Lately, I triggerred some bugs in the Shotscope post-round editing software, which Shotscope has said that they are fixing.

I like arccos a lot. I made a recommendation to Arccos to improve the preview caddie feature when planning a round at a new course. Arccos preview caddie will tell you the best combo of clubs to use based on yardages and accuracy. The problem is sometimes it will tell you to hit driver right between two bunkers where the fairway narrows. On GolfLogix I can plan my round much better but it doesn’t leverage my own stats. I hope they integrate this into the system because I like preparing for rounds and then recapping them just as you described in your review.

The problem with Arccos is in my opinion, that you have a) to subscribe (for a pretty high fee) and b) can't change the batteries. Garmin on the other hand let's you change the batteries but the watches are pretty expensive. I don't know much about the shot scope system - the X5 would be interesting, but i read a few comments, where users say there are a lot of problems recognizing the tags.

  • @michael2782

Like you I have around 300 recorded rounds on my Arccos dashboard. The good news for me was that I am grandfathered in and am not burdened with an annual subscription fee. I have recorded an average of 10 percent missed strikes per round, about half of them are putts. Also be aware that on a lot of single putts Arccos "gives" me 2 putts. All in all I have found that if you want accurate data you must edit every round. I have tried every method to get recording without editing including using the iPhone, Links (initial and new Connect version) and now my Series 7 Apple Watch. The number of missed strikes appears about the same no matter which method I attempted.
Prior to purchasing the Arccos system I used Game Golf but the Arccos app is infinitely better. I send my coach my rounds before I take a refresher hour of instruction and he seems to know instantly what to work on during the lesson.

Personally I’ve used arccos and shotscope and have stayed with shotscope. 1) no subscription fees, 2) I like wearing a watch although their newer version looks better than the previous one I had, 3) found no difference between the data between the services 4) great customer service. When I broke a couple tags switching clubs they quickly sent me new ones at no cost. I’d love to try the garmin at some point but am totally good with shotscope

I originally bought the CT10s last year but then realized that you needed a Garmin Golf watch to use it. From looking at all the reviews, it never mentioned it so I returned them to Amazon. I didn't like the Arccos because of the link and the price it added to the package. Originally I didn't want to pay the $150/yr for the subscription but honestly, everything in golf is going that way so why fight it. There's a price to get the data and the analysis, so might as well pay it.
However, now that the Arccos can use the Apple Watch, I committed to them. I have the Ultra (upgraded from 6 because of battery life), and from everything I hear, it works perfect. I don't want another device (I'm a software engineer, I have plenty of devices) so being able to use everything I have is awesome. I'm looking forward to play my first round with them since we don't have snow anymore (I'm in Iowa), so I'll add more info here.
I love the videos you've done with this in the past, so thank you for all the research and honest opinions.

I got the Arccos sensors for free, with a 90 day trial of their system. I cancelled just before the 90 days was up so I wouldn’t have to pay the annual fee…and I honestly don’t see any difference in the UI, because I do still use Arccos during my rounds. And I just let the app run the background as there are other Golf apps I also use during rounds, mainly the GHIN app. I also received a Garmin Finex 6X Pro for Fathers Day last year, and I love that watch, because I can track any activity known to man, including golf. Obviously I don’t have the Garmin sensors on top of my Arccos sensors, but the Garmin watch asks me which club I just hit, and tracks every shot even if I sometimes forget to let it know which club it was. I just go into the app after my round and assign the club I hit to the shot it detected. Most Garmin watches have the ability to track your golf too, it doesn’t have to be the Garmin Golf watches. I will say that the Garmin Golf app could use a facelift.

Enjoyed your review. I have been using the Garmin s62 with the CT 10 sensors for 2 years. Absolutely love the way it works. I don't wear watches usually but gave the s62 a chance. Only wore it for golf because it was big and on the heavy side. It does miss some shots but overall is pretty seamless. I upgraded to the s70 because of the screen, weight and beveled edges. It is awesome! The people at my country club that have used Arccos seem to only do so for a year. Not sure if it's the subscription or they are not using an apple watch.

You raise a good point around 7m "when it becomes a distraction and not an aid". I found using Arcoss on course a distraction eg pulling phone out to put score in then transfer strokes from one hole to another when things went wrong etc became problematic.
Having a Garmin watch which prompted me to enter score & putts etc when I was on green so much easier. Having said that Arcoss data was better than Garmin and if used in conjunction with Apple/Android watch app it could work well! I think the link belt thing is still required though otherwise you need to keep your phone in front pocket witch I also hated!

I have been using ARCCOS for about 5 years, I think, without a doubt, it has had the biggest impact on my game improvement. I know how far each club goes, I know (as you point out) what areas need work, and at the beginning what club to select. It also helps when I am not in line of sight to the pin and can't use a range finder. Overall my handicap has gone from 16 to 4 using ARCCOS. I’ve had Garmin ct10’s and now I use shotscope. The ct10 tags were just too big for my liking. Although I quite liked the software. Shotscope tags are so small and lightweight they don’t distract me at all. Only downside with shotscope I find is the putting. The pin collect doesn’t always accurately record the pin position. Also putting often defaults to 2 feet when you get close to the pin. So I find the putting stats a bit useless. Often oversells the distance to the pin. The rest is great. I’ve got the v3 and it’s good for my needs. I’ll wait for the next version after the x5 to upgrade as I don’t feel I’ve had enough use out of this one to justify the upgrade.

For the money it is miles better than the other systems, V3 for £150/$200 inc of watch and the tags.
    The technical
Support if there are mapping issues or problems is fantastic, the course is re mapped typically within 24 hrs.
The X5 is being offered with £100 off for V3 users, a bargain if you have the spare cash. A better watch, on course editing improved tags gathering more data, you now can get a running score. Watch display similar to the GarminS62.

I own a ShotScope H4 and its sensors and decided to 'upgrade' to the Garmin system this golf season. Despite my appreciation for the Garmin watch, I find the sensors to be markedly inferior in comparison to those of ShotScope. The Garmin sensors consistently demand re-tightening or simply dislodge easily falling to the ground during a shot, proving to be a distraction during a round. The design of Garmin sensors appears to be fundamentally flawed, and I am not alone in voicing this grievance.
In essence, the ShotScope stands out as a notably more cost-effective solution, particularly well-suited for golf. Once affixed to the club ends, the ShotScope sensors become inconspicuous. Opting for the Garmin system, with its subpar sensor design, seems justified only if you intend to track a variety of activities in addition to golf. The Garmin system excels in multi-activity tracking, but for dedicated golf enthusiasts, the ShotScope remains a better choice.
BTW, the better comparison would be the ShotScope X5.

Arccos with Apple Watch Ultra is god-tier. Lasts 36 holes and the GPS is amazing. I enjoyed Shotscope V3 when I had it, but the dealbreaker for me was that Shotscope didn't have any course maps on my phone while I played, so I'd have to be doing Shotscope AND have The Grint or something open to see what each hole was doing and map out my strategy. Looks like Shot Scope is about to drop a new watch, which is cool, but since i already have an Apple Watch that also gives me notifications and stuff while on the course, doubt I'll go back to it unless they allow you to bring your own Apple Watch instead of building somewhat sub-par watches themselves.

Great review, albeit a couple days late. LOL. My Shot Scope V3, which I purchased from Play Better, arrived last Thursday. In my excitement to use it, I played 27 holes yesterday in 45 F weather with 25-40 mph winds (7 degrees C, 22-35 knots). I didn't play well in that wind and cold, but I enjoyed the watch immensely, and the data that I received afterwords was accurate. It did miss 2 shots, which I had to edit, which was easy.
I think your analysis was dead on. I would add one thing. I opted for the V3 because I am new to shot tracking, and I'm not sure it is something I will use. With it's much lower price, the V3 is an easy entry point. If I decide that I want more later, I'm sure I can sell the V3 and buy a more expensive system.
BTW, I have to wonder if the reason the V3 was price reduced, and now shows as out of stock, is because the X5 is it's replacement, and the V3 will be discontinued.

Now at $299, it's more of an upfront investment. You can almost get Arccos and 2 years of the subscription for the same price (Arccos would be about $20 more, after our discount).

You mentioned arccos showing more data. What exactly are you thinking about? Is it the ability to use sliders to only consider shots from a small bucket? Or is there anything else I'm missing?
And why does the Garmin laser connects to an app? What does it provide?

    • @breakingeighty
      @breakingeighty  Год назад +1

The Garmin rangefinder will allow you to keep score in it, which you can upload to the app if you want to use it to keep score. When you're connected to the app you also get wind speed/direction, as well as essentially the equivalent of "find my iPhone". If you forget the rangefinder, the app will beep at you so you don't lose it.
As for Arccos, the scatter charts are what I find most useful. And I believe you can only get those when using the desktop dashboard.

I wanted to love shot scope. Easy to use and the watch is good on course. But it is way too inaccurate to be useful and I've had to go through and adjust literally every shot most rounds. Which takes about an hour. But that's all a moot point now anyway since i can't charge it using the proprietary charger.... It simply doesn't charge any more. So great concept but not quite there yet. I think i will try the Garmin as i do like having a watch

It honestly comes down to personal preference. The reality is most people dont need the exact distance a rangefinder provides. But there's also a lot of people that dont want to deal with more tech on the golf course. And some people want both! So it really comes down to how you want to experience your rounds of golf.

How comparable is the battery drain on the Apple Watch between using Arccos and Golfshot Plus? Currently, I always run that through the round and have never had an issue with battery life at all. Only reason I ask is that my Apple Watch is a Series 5 and you noted there could be a concern for Series 6 and earlier.

I like Arccos and I really love the fact that it integrates so well with the Apple watch, but the subscription has got too expensive imo. Shot Scope could really take a chunk out of Arccos if they sold a sensor bundle that does auto shot tracking and pairs with the Apple watch (and maybe other smart watches) without any sort of subscription. I'd happily pay £150 for the sensors if it meant being able to get rid of paying a subscription.

It just makes it a lot easier and more accurate to get data for the rest of the clubs. Personally I'd consider putting one on the driver. I've found the S70 and Epix tracking to work pretty well, but I've had more missed shots just doing that than when using dedicated sensors.

CT-10 Putter Sensors - With the new oversize putter grips I could not attach the sensor to the putter. I did get the CT-10 3 pack. On my older putter I cut off part of the stem for it to screw in. My latest putter that will not work. I see Shot Scope offers a flat sensor which you can glue onto the grip. I have searched the Garmin forums and there are plenty of complaints there. To your point, seems as though the CT-10 was an afterthought. And they are making no effort to remedy this issue. For the record, I have the S62. Is a fantastic watch. Just find the data analysis pretty weak.

I've had a shotscope v3 for 2 years. My main frustration is that editing must be done after the round is finished. Which is fine on my home course. But troublesome everywhere else as I can't remember all my shots in a course I'm not familiar with.
So I gave a try to arccos. And the arccos dashboard is just crap in comparison to the shotscope one. First the design is like the Web in 1999. Then the shot editor is not using the same map on iPhone and on the Web, so the shots don't appear in the same place. Then the shot editor locks you on a very small part of the map that sometimes doesn't include part of the hole (I've had multiple occurrences of the tee box being too far away, and I don't play championship fees). Then the putting stats are poor because only the first putt is placed on the map. Oh and the grid on the green view is only available in 10 feet increments, sad for people using meters.
Final disappointment with arccos is partially on me. I was mostly looking for the ability to edit a hole while playing. But I have an iPhone 8, which just isn't bright enough to be readable.
On a positive note, arccos tags indeed feel like they use better plastic than shotscope. But having to worry about the battery and using sound is less than ideal.
So I think I'll go back to shotscope with the X5. They already announced that they'll add new features such as a map overview on the watch, similar to what Garmin does.
At this point to me the best solution would probably be a Garmin s62 without the tags but with a data platform similar to arccos/shotscope. Tags aren't really critical. The watch guesses the right club most of the time and it's super quick to change to another one on the good quality screen when it isn't the case.
Regarding the future, shotscope will have a new version of the v3 next year. And arccos apparently has a big announcement soon, but no idea what it is about. I'd guess the ability to play with an apple watch without tags.
