Believe it or not, there IS some method to the madness.
To an extent, you can control what sort of dreams you have by running in to either static or moving objects and by avoiding the grey man (who resets your progress). It's one hell of a slow ride though.
Can you actually complete it by going through all 5 In game years?
The game is considered complete when you've gone through 365 days, so you only need to go through one in game year.
Pretty sure all you get for "winning" is a bunch of kanji though.
I know you wrote this comment 3 years ago, but can you reference where you found this information? I hold the speedrunning world record in this game, & I haven't found any evidence that the grey man "resets" your progress, that is the only reason I ask.

I'm sorry Caddy but I didn't like this video
I did like your humor like usual but I think most of your complaints could have been avoided by doing some research on the gameplay (for ex how if you touch the Gray Man all of your dream progress are erased and that's why you kept ending up in the same places; and how it's not really hard to get the really weird and trippy dreams, the more days you go on dreaming without touching the Gray Man the freakier and weirder they get)
You're still one of my favourite youtubers though and I love your videos, so keep up the good work! ^^
Totaly agree. I kinda think he chould remake this video, seeing how many of his problems are just him not knowing how the game works.
He knows how the game works, he quit day 10 because it's a boring bland game to play and obviously isn't enjoyable at all. He's not playing a game for randomness, he's playing it cause he wanted a game.

Actually, depending on the places you go, your place in the yellow face will be determined. The closer you are to the bottom-center, the more twisted and disturbing the dreamscapes will be, causing the Man in the Black Hat to appear more to chase you, the latter as referenced in the Japanese paragraph after day one.
Sometimes I feel like the limited graphics of the PS1 specifically makes games like this more disturbing and creepy. Am I not alone? :)

You forgot to say that this game is yes inspired by the dream journal, but it's made by Osamu Sato, the same who also did Eastern Mind - besides, this is not really meant to be a game, it's meant to be interactive art
Who else thinks it would be cool if this game was remade for current gen systems with more refined gameplay?
Force0fWi11 meh. games made on current consoles, that have disturbing begginings, often lose most of their bizzareness when in HD. resident evil for example
If they remade this (and released it in murica) that would be awsome
Zdolny Ale Leniwy well, if The Evil Within can work (and it does fucking work), than i think that devs just aren't trying hard enough.
leon2550 sure, but one thing is missing. LSD dream simulator is not really a game. its an "experience". "experiences" are mostly left to be made by indie devs and let's be honest. its often not that great.
Oh wow, I can feel the epileptic seizures already.
It seems of what Caddy did hear, he didn't hear about the main draw of this game: As the days progress, the game's textures/audio/etc. become more and more corrupted (on purpose). For instance, the soundtrack is actually only several audio loops. However, they are morphed relative to area and day progress. Textures just go insane. Just as well, the game throws more random events at you, which can come out of nowhere and leave the player uncertain of just what this game CAN do. The city has some pretty disturbing stuff later on. It's actually really interesting.
Another important point which of course he wouldn't know just diving into it: That gray man he saw is The Gray Man, as coined by players. He's actually one of the few anchor points of this game, having an actual effect on your game and presenting a hindrance to "progress." If he touches you, he will clear your Dream Journal, which among other things resets your progress on achieving the above random events and interesting self-corruption. He should be avoided at all costs, preferably by backing away. While more common in later days, he will sometimes respawn directly in front of the player if already existing in the map, so backing away keeps him from surprising the player.
The color of the transitions between each map also hold significance. Three primary transitions are white is average, blue is good, and red is bad. (There are other colors documented, but these seem most common and definite in effect) While the exact meanings are only speculation, the dot on your Dream Journal will be placed relative to these. The words Upper/Downer/Static/Dynamic across the lengths of the journal actually work as a graph of this information.
Also, days range from wandering the environments, to Japanese text, to trippy videos. Most of the time, you wander environments. I'd say the text and videos are a free pass to skip a day, although it might be more like Pokemon whereas you could use a rare candy to skip a level, but you don't get as good stats for it...
In the end, while he did present screenshots of the game at extreme day counts, whereas the corruption had become immense, I can't say the final judgement was exactly fair. Putting aside that it was the early days, since as he stated the pacing was slow to get into, the major issue was The Gray Man touching him - twice. This reset the game's random events, thus leaving him with a less eventful experience. The main draw is to reach amplifications of corruption and events, avoiding The Gray Man's (honestly) bullshit resetting ability. I wouldn't expect him to push hundreds of days in this for a single video, but I feel he judged it a bit too quickly considering the circumstances, and moreover premise of the game. Love ya, Caddy - just wish we got a bit more information to you before getting into this.
Like the vg cats thumbnail m8
I don't think you edited the comment
Nate Tanguay Just did... And I have 15 likes? TO SUMMARIZE MY EDIT: The Gray Man screwed Caddy out of the full experience, since he resets your dream journal and therefore the random event and corruption parts of the game which make it shine. For that, I'm not say his final judgement was exactly fair, but then again neither was The Gray Man, so... I don't want to say "nerf The Gray Man" because (besides this being a 1998 game), his precise is its own spice, but for the purposes of this video he was VERY rude. Bad Gray Man. BAD.
***** Most likely the "You spoil the experience if you research" frame of mind going around lately, despite the fact this is a 1998 game. It's hard to shake, because how are you supposed to know when it applies? Maybe it does apply to a 1998 game. What I'm commenting on is that he showed comments of people requesting the game, and in that I am sad he wasn't given a proper amount of foreknowledge to combat the possibility of a no-spoiler scenario.
What the hell, MegaScience from the Happy Wheels wiki?
"Half the time dreams will lead to nowhere and you have no way of making them more interesting."
...just like REAL dreams.
+ArronZ M. that's your opinion. Caddicarus just doesn't understand the game.
the game took inspiration from an actual dream journal
ZorotheGallade I agree
ZorotheGallade It frustrated me a bit that he didn't really acknowledge that as the point.
That’s the most pretentious thing you could have said Dorris Adrian
I do love the early PS1 library, they tried to break the mould with original titles like this, Vib Ribbon, Parappa, Jumping Flash etc. It's what's made the PS1 so special and stand out against Sega and Nintendo.
Nowadays, with the PS4 line up, it's generic FPSes or Gran Turismo, InFamous or if you're lucky, God of War. Just vanilla shit that shows it's lost the magic.
Guru Larry! :D
I guess FPS will lose its trend pretty soon because of its saturated market, just look what happened to JRPG boom and the platformers, although I would like to see the platformers having its glorifying return outside of the Nintendo library.
Crash Bandicoot HD trilogy remake, anyone? I mean c'mon, Activision, you want my money or what?
CliffFitter89 If the FPS genre dies, then I hope it takes Fifa down with it.
Probably won't happen anytime soon though
***** why exactly Fifa?
***** I never said FPS will die out, well I believe franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield will get its back seat somewhere near the future, and FPS can be interesting if they implement it well, System Shock, Bioshock, Deus Ex, Call of Juarez, etc. but the problem is that FPS games of today are getting very unimaginative and linear filled with overblown set-pieces and no impact and they exist only to cater to shareholders, and people keep buying them just because they added more gimmicks to the already stale franchise, hence exoskeletons and jetpacks in COD AW, and I don't play FIFA, I used to then I lost interest after 2008 or 2009
Believe me, reading LSD Dream Emulator Wikia is infinitely more fun than actually playing it.
+Adrian Fragaso no u
no, you are. the game is pretty good, taking inspiration from an actual
dream journal.
Oh that stupid point, thanks Dorris Adrian for saying the most pretentious thing ever
This game has a wikia?
It enhances the experience a lot since you know what to look for and how to trigger events
"This game was designed to utterly confuse the player."
- Caddy proceeds to spend several minutes complaining about how confusing the game is -
“Hey waiter, this food tastes like shit.”
“Don’t worry, it’s SUPPOSED to taste like shit.”
“Oh, well then carry on.”
Hi waiter, can I have some shit?
@@diosrightcalfmuscle4090 I mean yes, but to acknowledge that being confusing is the entire point and still complain about it still seems a bit backward.
@@LyricaSilvan just because he acknowledged it doesn’t mean he can’t complain about it like wut
@@diosrightcalfmuscle4090
Being bad and being confusing aren't the same thing, dreams themselves are often confusing as it's your brain trying to make sense of unrelated thoughts, the game delivers on that feeling, so I say it succeeded, but apparently some people seem to think that succeeding in what it goes out of it's way to accomplish makes it bad, nice logic

I hate to be that guy, but this was a terrible Caddy review. I'm usually really into his reviews, but he completely missed the point of the game. Yes, I know he went into this game blind but that was stupid and pointless thing to do. Especially when he brought up the fact that the developers meant to make the game disorienting and confusing. If you read something like that, then that should be credence to look up on how the game works mechanic-wise instead of jumping into it and complaining about every minute thing.
Here's the thing about LSD, it's technically not a game. As the late great JewWario said in his review, "It's more of an experience". And that's true, this isn't a game at all. It's an experience, you go from area to area viewing things happening. Sometimes its crazy things, sometimes its not. It's like an actual dream, you never know what you're going to get when you go to sleep. It's the same with the game, it's a different experience each time you play.
And the longer you go with out running into the Grey Man (Who can be avoided by backing up) the more your dreams will build up and the crazier they will get. Caddy should have did what he did with Mr. Domino and looked up how the game worked. That was a good review because Caddy was well-educated on how to play and properly use the mechanics of the game. Here he was not.
He jumped into a game despite being given clear warning that it was disorienting and confusing, complained about it despite the fact that he barely played the game for what must have been no more then a few hours (Ten days pass fast in the game) and posted a video review online despite the fact that he never really gave the game a chance. I'm all for differing opinions, but I always dislike when an opinion misses the point of the whole thing. Caddy went into this expecting a game and instead got an experience. I'm not an LSD: Dream Emulator fanboy, but I do have to admit that this game is a lot more unique then Caddy gives it credit for.
Oh hush, the review was fine. He already said it doesn't matter if he "knows" what the game is about, he and pretty much everyone else watching this dont' care about that, we want a game. This is a walking simulator with goofy pictures thrown at you and he reviewed it accurately, a boring walking simulator with stupid visuals, 6.5 out of 10.
And going off that, an "experience" isn't any kind of excuse for being bad, plenty of games are great at providing unique interesting experiences while still delivering on competent game design and being in general enjoyable. This game is lacking in both areas and he judged it accordingly.
***** Did I say that I didn't think it should be criticized? Everything can be criticized, that's the point. I'm okay with criticism, but I think criticism should be pointed at something when the reviewer understands what it is and how to play it. It's like when that IGN guy reviewed Alien Isolation. And how would Caddy know how much content is in the game when he barely played it? He gave up on the game after a couple of hours, he barely gave this game a thorough shot.
All I know is just watching this, I'd get ill with all the flashing and sounds. Ugh
Totalblue *****: Judging something as something it is not is the same as calling a painting bad because it is not a novel. What you are doing is essentially saying "a bad novel is still a bad novel even if it is a painting."
Painocus Damn straight. It's like treating a flight simulator as an RPG. This game is an experience, and should be treated as such. It's basically a simulator designed around dreams. Caddy expected too much from this game because of what he heard and based all of his frustrations upon that fact.
the box says "lovely sweet dreams" but i'm pretty sure that's not what it stands for

the reason why he hated lsd so much is because he was looking at it as a game rather than an experience. lsd is an experience. you wander around and see where it takes you. if you look at it as a game, it becomes kinda shitty and pointless. games have goals and context and things to do. in lsd, it's just wander with an open mind and try not to go insane. gameplay wise, it's supposed to be terrible. if you run into a wall and link somewhere, just go with it. you can't get angry at a game with no rules.

You didn't mention the fact that the game came with a CD and a book. The book is where the game is given a lot of context. I really love this game for what it was and of course respect your opinion, but I think you were trying too hard to find the "point" or an objective.
Stevean2 by looking it up? research...
Stevean2 Exactly, he emulated. emulating, or even getting a second hand copy of a game can hinder the full experience of the game. you dont get booklets and its might be glitchy relative to the original game. Also I would be very interested in what the text during the not really level nights said. That might have something to do with it.

MegaScience Yeah, i heard of it, but i have little hope that it will ever be released
***** I believe it will be released. What I'm worried about is the quality. When I thought back to how the Flashback system works in this game, I realized the game must work on a form of seed system. I thought the revamp should use seeds for generating maps, with larger numbers resulting in the higher corruption rate. However, he wasn't enthusiastic about the idea, in relation to custom content specifically.
To me personally, I think user content would greatly retract from the feeling of the game. How can you feel surprise/wonder when you've gone and installed the content, yourself? Just my opinion...

Yeah I've tried it and he sums up the problems really well. The graphics hold it back, there's no real rules to what happens so you just run around hoping to see something interesting, and the footstep sound effects are grating. If someone were to take a crack at it nowadays I can't imagine any of those problems being present.

Huh, well that's a webpage alright.
Uhhh, is there any more information about this? There isn't much to go on from that page.
I'd like to see a remake of this game. xD
Children! Your minds are too precious and innocent to bestow upon this! Please, avert thy eyes! Avert thy eyes! Children, begone and avert from this crevasty!!!!!!

I feel bad for that woman who had all those dreams...
Me too :_(
Same here.
It's even worse than the origin of Giygas!
...Aika?
Yep, Aika.
This lady's dreams are definitely weird, yet boring. At least my weird dreams have stuff like G1 transformers and massive amounts of scorpions and spiders.
Gosh I want to forget that one.
Dangit, I forgot that one and was reminded by that comment.
Tarantulas and Scorponok fight to the death
I have dreams worse than that my dreams are yours and the girls dreams mixed together
At least your dreams don’t involve your family talking shit about you behind your back while you’re busy taking care of the family alligator ranch…
… yeah we raised alligators for some reason.
@@mylifeisacomplexpastiche7901 Your family has an alligator ranch in real life or the dream?
Somewhere in the video, I saw the what LSD stands for.
Limbo
Silent
Dream
There are a ton of these little sequences scattered in the game. And most of them contain an explenation for what LSD could mean, however they all tell you something different.
The official title is Lovely Sweet Dreams, but the game has over 20 phrases in the intro to describe what LSD stands for.
1kenny30 Nah guys it means Lysergic Acid Diethylamide
Glow Life That's LAD
Yeah but thats what the drug stands for.
Imagine this game in virtual reality.
People would die from sleep depravation.

(obvious Kirby joke)
Caddi, your kind of missing a lot. You touch certain objects to go across the map, from what I can remember it's:
Moving objects take you more to dynamic areas,
Stuff that doesn't move take you more to static areas.
And touching certain colored things take you to darker/downer dreams while brighter stuff takes you to more upper areas.
Also the fact that the Shadow Man erases your progress, and resets how trippy the game can get. He's probably the reason (besides touching just random everything) you got to the same areas.
***** Admitably, I wouldn't be surprized if they didn't tell you that in game. But I'm just saying, if your this confused, look something up!
***** It's a lot like old SNES and NES (but more NES) games that don't tell you crap in game, and expet you to figure it out yourself. Though I wouldn't be surprized if burried in the LSD Dream Emulator manuel's Japanese text there is instructions.
good comment. have a cookie
I love Osamu Sato. I'd reccomend Eastern Mind to any PC adventure game fan ever, too.
Alex The Kaiser Look up a RUclipsr named Azuritereaction (He moved to "AzuriteYT"). He was a major contributor in LSD's RUclips popularity, and found a copy of Easter Mind. I'm sure if you check his video descriptions or external posts, you'll find a link to the game.
The music he makes is also incredible.
***** Yep. There's other games mentioned which are also lost. Need to catch'em all...

I've always wanted to find his Rolypolys games. I've been planning on getting 4chan's /vr/ (the guys who found Chu-Teng) on it...
***** holy crap, someone else is looking for them!? I talked to Mr. Sato and asked him about his roly poly games and he said he had no idea where to get a copy unfortunately

This is what happens when Bill Cipher gets drunk and decides to possess some game developers.

No matter how many times I watch this video, it never gets boring.
When anti-drug-games go to far...
I thought it was a pro-drugs game.
Watch i´ll proove you:
Have you watched the video?
If yes do you want to take some LSD now?
I stand corrected. No, I want to stay away from LSD forever.
See? It worked
The fun thing is that this has nothing to do with drugs. The LSD in the title stands for Lovely Sweet Dream
15:50 "I'm now in some kind of never-ending hallway, and I think I can see something at the end of it." I think this game has started to turn caddy insane...
I can't really say that Cadi "missed the point of the game", but I will say he was incredibly closed minded towards it's premise. Anyone can see that it's an artsy-fartsy game, but it does have things that one should pick up on. The types of things you touch directly correlate to what you see, which is literally the entire game.
Psychic Detective worked in much a similar fashion, having to go through different POV's to receive different endings, and he was much more lenient when reviewing that game.
LSD is by far not a great game, but it definitely is an innovative and interesting one.
As soon as River Twygz Bed turned on during day 10 the nightmarish images began to sink in...
Indeed.

"This game makes no goddamn sense"
The game's called lsd dream emulator what did you expect
This game is so fucking weird with visuals, music, everything. The fact that literally you can touch anything to get teleported anywhere, lack of direction and SENSE makes it so disorienting...
...I kinda wanna play this now. And make sense of it. And want my brain to be minced into a nice Big Mac. Which I can then eat. With my mouth.
Actually there are some rules to the dreams you experience. It depends on what you touch. It will determine the kind of dream that you have.
I mean, I imagine it's kinda like "touching one thing will transport you to the same co-ordinate in another world". That would be my explanaion why Caddi was stuck in a wall that one time.
Whatever you do, avoid The Gray Man. Caddy saw him twice in this video. He resets your Dream Journal, which resets the systems that basically progress you through the game. That is, the game progressively corrupts itself, as well as introducing new events, as the days go on. The Gray Man resets this, which means starting over. Basically, you won't see how deep the rapid hole goes since The Gray Man pulls you back to the top.
When running from him, it's best to do it via backing away. While this happens more often in higher day counts, the game likes to respawn him immediately in front of you if you run away with him out of sight, so keeping a line of sight on him keeps him walking at the slow pace.
....you can eat a Big Mac? Hory shet.
***** To my knowledge the object and color effect how the place you go to behaves. That's why his transition screens weren't always the same color, the colors represent different moods or something like that.
A remake for LSD Dream Emulator on the Oculus Rift would be... I don't... TERRIFYING.
17:12 Oh no you don't, TAKE ME TO MY DOOM.
I would really love a remake of LSD, more content, more worlds and vastly improved graphics. I mean, this game is FAR from perfect, it's hard to call it "good" either, but holy hell it was an interesting experiment, this was waaaay ahead of it's time, and I really have to appreciate that.
Too bad it fell completely flat on it's face, hopefully if someone makes a game they'll be able to look at this and see what not to do.
Totalblue Honestly, this is my third favroite game ever.
