- Prevent theft of your Toyota vehicle and save battery life of your key fob with this easy trick. Stop car thieves from relaying the signal from your key fob. Disable your smart key fob from emitting a signal to your vehicle. Car in video is the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Should work with Camry, RAV4, Prius and more. #toyota #toyotacorolla #cartheft
Thanks for the tip. My keys are on a hook near the side door where I park. I wondered if someone could open the car door because of the close proximity.
Glad you found this helpful.
how do you replace the headlamp on a Toyota Rav 4
A thief definitely can. These thieves use a repeater device that capture the signal from the key fob to transmit it to the onboard receiver in the vehicle. It can definitely allow them to unlock and open the door, and take your vehicle while you’re sound asleep.
While this tip is practical, useful and a cheap way to stop the transmitter in your key fob to completely stop, if you prefer you can purchase a an RFID blocking case that covers the entire key fob and does the same in stopping any signal from emitting from within the cover. They’re about $11 to $20. it’s not that bad in pricing, but if you’re not looking to not spend any money then the tip on disabling the transmitter with a few simple clicks works just as well.
My daughter was with a friend and found the friend had to be well over 100 feet away, nearly 200 feet away, before the car was securely locked. Think about that in a crowded parking lot or especially your own driveway. They may not be able to steal your car by driving away, but they can wait in the back seat to attack you or steal whatever you have in the car.
@@tommissouri4871LOL I don’t know what kind of car you’re talking about but I can lock my car immediately after exiting it with my key fob.
The dealer never told me this when I bought the vehicle. Thanks!
Now you know. ;-)
The dealer was probably clueless.
That defeats the purpose of keyless entry that’s even if they know it they wouldn’t want to teach us 😂😂
I just keep my key fob in an RFID pouch. No more signals, no cloning theft risk. Great to know this also saves the battery life.
Thanks for checking out the video
That's a good idea! I could have a small one by the side door where my keys are.
Yes I bought 2 for my husband
Thanks for the tip! Now I know!
I generally keep my FOB in a little Faraday box in the house. But I like the idea of disabling the FOB all together.
Thank you! I wish Toyota dealers will tell you this when buying a car. I have a 2023 Camry and they never went over this feature.
This feature is somewhere in the manual, although not many people know this. Here in the Netherlands, many cars are stolen by software manipulation, as was show here. I use this practice allway and battery lasted for 7 years, while using my Auris daily. Very usefull tutorial indeed.
Very useful to know, had no idea you could deactivate it.
You are AMAZING!!!!
Just spent half a day in a 100 degree parking lot trying to keep my new toyota “ locked”
Neither their sales or service could fix this
THANK YOU
( from me & my sister & some neighbors 😊)
I just bought a 2023 Corolla and this was NOT explained to me at the dealership. Much thanks for some good information.
My observation is that many dealers are not fully aware of all features. That is where RUclips comes to our rescue!!0
No one reads their car manuals, and that's sad. 😢 Thanks for the tip!
Will have to try this on my 21 Jeep and my wifes 15 chevy. I ordered my Jeep with a built in theft deterrent... a 6 speed manual transmission. Went to get my oil changed the other day the kid came in and told the boss it had a manual. No one on staff knew how to operate a stick so i had to pull it in for them. Best investment i have made was gettting that Jeep with a stick.
Thank you. Now I can stop worrying about constantly replacing batteries.
Wow. My mom had a Toyota keyfob back in 2008 and this is brand new to me. Thank you!
Newer Toyota / Lexus keyless fobs have moved over to the motion detection type, they automatically stop transmitting the signal after a few minutes once they sense the keyless fob has stopped moving. This is one of the reasons the car thieves now use the CAN invader method instead of relay theft. AFAIK if it has Toyota / Lexus safety sense 3.0 then the CAN invader method shouldn't work as the CAN encryption hasn't been cracked - YET!
Starting what year ?
@@ralanham76 - It's also model dependent as the newer type fobs where introduced in stages.
Please define your terms, using jargon doesn’t help the reader. CAN Bus=Controller Area Network.
Its great, I ordered a new GH recently.
Really? Cool! I hope this is true for my fob. I just got a 2023 toyota on safety sense 3.0. Still might use this trick just in case
I've got my spare smart key turned off this way on my Rav4 three years ago when I bought it. But I had forgotten how to do it. I think I'll start doing this every day on my 1st smart key.
That's f'd up. Thank you so much for the video. It works on my RCF.
Nice to know. I just bought a new Corolla Cross hybrid and I was worried about the key being in close proximity to the vehicle that's parked in the driveway also now I'm not wasting the battery on my second key.
I didn't know about this, and we have two late model Toyota cars in the household. Great tip!
Glad you found this video helpful
Thanks for this useful tip.
I just bought my first Toyota after a lifetime of Honda ownership. I love my new car but I was surprised by how basic Toyota’s key fob was. Honda fobs have a proximity sensor where you can set the doors to unlock or lock a set distance when you are walking to or away from the vehicle. The driver seat and mirror settings are activated when the corresponding key opens the door. You can start the car from your fob and the “real” secret key has the capability to actually start the car.
Thank you, it works on my 2014 Camry.😀
My '23 rav4 fob goes to sleep after some time (10-15) minutes or so. had them on the passenger seat waiting in line for school pick up, when i tried to start rav, it said key Not detected. Jiggled them to wake up the fob and all good. The trick in this video i will use when at a theme park where they are constantly moving.
Thats so awesome, i just tested it, it worked on my 2024 camry XLE! Thanks!!!!
Thanks, I'm glad to have learned that.
Great info, thanks!
Good information, thanks.
Wonderful Info. Thank you.
Thanks! If there's any other hidden combos in that fob, would love to see more videos about it!
For sure! Thanks for watching. :-)
There could be. On my 2007 Camry Hybrid you could do some button gymnastics which would change the door open button from unlocking the two front doors to unlocking all four doors. Wasn't in the manual. Read about it on a user's forum.
@@toma5153on my Avalon the Auto Unlock can be adjusted in the car’s settings menu so that grabbing the drivers door handle unlocks all doors or just the drivers door. On the key fob two clicks on the unlock button and all doors will unlock. Two clicks on the lock button and the doors lock as well as all the lights shut off.
Good tip, thanks much
Thank you for posting

Thanks for the tip!
What years models is this for? If I have a 2010 Highlander with keyless entry, it doesn't have this buttons-to-disable feature. Is there a compatible newer version of the key fob that does have this feature?
This is a good trick, and it needs to be done within a 5 second window as some toyotas have the long press of the lock button open the windows (dealer visit enabled feature)
Though our new car isn't Toyota, I will forward to my husband and compare this I fo. Very interesting and useful video as I'm not tech-minded. 👍👍👍
Yes works on Lexus thank you!!!
Excellent info
very helpful, thanks.
Excellent video, Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for watching!
If I ever can afford to buy a modern car, I will remember this.
I wish this worked for my 2012 Toyota Avalon. What year did they implement this feature anyway?
All FoBs should have a manual-only mode where proximity features are disabled, got to press the button to unlock and present the FoB to an NFC-style reader to start.
Thanks!
Thank you for this video!
Hey, thanks for watching!
Great tip
Nice...thanks
Thanks! So much to learn about my 2023 Hybrid Highlander! I'll try this to save battery & feel a bit safer. I just can't get my remote start to work properly. It works from my key fob, but when I open door it goes off . What would cause that?
Mine did this too. Don't know why though.
Fellow Canadian! Thx for this video
Thanks for watching, eh 😉
I have washed my new Sienna, and have had the side door and rear hatch open when I wash in the sensor area. Locking the car and leaving the keys in the house stops that, but this method is easier.
fascinating. thanks
Will putting the key fob in an Altoids mint box block the signal ?
Does this work ONLY on Toyota?
Or ALL Makes like for instance Dodge?
And is it the same entry for all Makes?
Brilliant works well
I will give it a try.
When did Toyota start with this technology? I have a 2017 Tundra, I'm guessing it started some time after this year.
👍👍thanks for info.
Thanks for watching
Great info! Most people have 2 FOBs. If you do this to 1 FOB does this automatically shut off the 2nd or do you have to do both FOBs?
Both
Thank you very much for this valuable info .
Nice tip. Do you need to reenter the disabling method each time you unlock your car?
Hit any button to reactivate the fob
I bought a 2022 prius and it is deactivated. In my situation I want to activate the passive entry. This car was a corporate vehicle. Now I know what is wrong. I thought my was broken. When I watched your video, it was deactivated that’s all. What a relief. Now, I want to activate it again so it will be back to normal. Can you tell me how to do this. Thank you ☺️
Or, instead of fooling around with pressing and holding two buttons and waiting for the flashing light every time you park your car and walk into your house, get a Faraday key storage box and drop the key fob in there. You can also get small easy to use Faraday key fob covers if you feel the need to have the key fob shielded whenever you walk away from your car.
That too. Thanks for playing.
Or, instead of fooling around with a faraday pouch or box, just turn off keyless entry and keyless ignition features indefinitely. You can do it yourself on some models or have the dealer turn it off.
Note: Faraday box won’t save battery life
@@666BIGBLOCK True enough! My FJ Cruiser was 16 years old when I traded it for a 4Runner. BOTH of the FJ key fobs still had their original batteries. I'm not too concerned about battery life. Now that I'm thinking about it, I've never replaced a key fob battery on ANY vehicle I've ever owned.
What I use. I have some covers for routine use at home and away from home, but a Faraday storage box can just be a tin canister. If you can walk to the car and not open the door while holding the fob in the can, the signal is closed off and the car is secure.
I work for Toyota and I didn't know this!
Does this trick also work with Honda key’s ?
I do have some questions Sir. How to open the engine without opening the car door lock?
Hi any help.. my 4runner is brand new... so i only changed setting of unlock from driver only to all. Then after that my lock and unlock button now did not work but it can the sensor on grab handle works fine. I can lock by pressing the sensor but not the key. What do you think is the issue? Thank you
Will this work on my BMW x5
After doing this can you remote start the vehicle? Does it stay on this feature or do you have to turn the feature on after every use?
Thanks
How to deactivate the theft deterrent system of the toyota wigo 2024? The car with lock icon keeps on blinking. I don’t want it activated since I have a safe parking space and it might activate whenever I am not around and may drained my car battery due to the alarm sound and blinking headlights
I keep my fob in a small faraday bag after I parked, whether at home or anywhere else. The inconvenience is, I have to take it out the bag to get in or start the car.
Thanks.
Awesome!! Does this work on 2022 RAV4?
yes
Great
thank you for this info! what are you thoughts on a faraday bag? I'm seeing some mixed reviews on those.. do those bags "wear out" over time?
The metal tins the cough drops come in work really good.
Do any other manufacturers have this ability?
Good to know.
I have a small metal container with lid I started putting them in.
CHR 2017, Uk, it’s in the manual about page 48.
I have replaced my batteries on the key fob and the key fob does work. From time to time I noticed that the car says the batteries I believe in the key fob are low but after pulling the battery out and checking it they are not low. I also noticed when I get into the car if it doesn't detect the key fob if I stay there for about 20 seconds it will finally see the keys. what do you think this problem could be?
If you've dropped it several times, it may have internal damge in the transmitter signal. I'g call the dealership to out what test can be done to confirm this in case you need a replacment.
@@NowYouKnow007 I will check to see if both fobs act the same way. One fob could be damaged but I think you would just lose communication altogether not report a weak battery condition. Let me dig into this a little more see what I can find out.
Do you recommend doing this to the spare FOB key sitting in my drawer at home?
Sure thing
A toggle switch in the car, wire from distributor to switch and one to earth, ignition system disabled.
Does the deactivate option work if you store your deactivated key phob next to a second one close by that might still be sending a signal?
Did I read it right,
If one is ON,
and one is OFF,
Do they Interact With Each Other???
My Guess OFF,
Would be the Clue?
When you deactivate a key fob, it is iff until you press a button again. It will not communicate at all, not with your car or another key fob.
@@NowYouKnow007 works - thanks
on my lexus the key has to be within probably 2 or 3 feet of the car otherwise the proximity sensors dont work so im not too worried about it.
i want the old fashion key fob. I don't care about the proximity function. I can push a button.
i wish there is a way to program the fob to be an old fashion fob.
That would be nice, thanks for watching
I have that feature on our 2023 Camry and my 2022 Hyundai Kona. Lucky for us, we keep our cars inside our garage at night. When parked during the day in a shopping center, the keyfob in our pockets are too far away from the car for anyone to "steal" the signal to unlock the car. Great tip though for those older cars who are stolen more often!
No it's possible. One thief goes behind you to a shopping center with a retransmitter device and the other one goes to your car with receiving device. The signal from your keys is retransmitted so the car thinks that you are standing nearby and unlock the door.
You can block the signal from being transmitted though with an aluminium box case. Yes, clunky cover for a key fob but worth it.Think its called a Faraday key fob case.
What about starting the engine? Do I then have to put the key fob to the "start" button?
You only disable when you leave the car or ho in your home for the night. Reactivate by pressing any button to enter vehicle and start your vehicle as normal.
@@NowYouKnow007
Thanks.
Greetings from Poland
On my VW it is disabled by pressing the lock button then within 5 seconds touching the lock depression on the handle.
I was all excited for this to work but it worked for neither of my 2014 PiP fobs 😔. We go through batteries like crazy.
Dang, too bad.
It's a great idea but it needs to be a toggle feature. Once you push any of the buttons to lock/unlock the car, it goes back to broadcasting the RFID signal and you have to do that process all over again. Instead, they should make it to where you do it once to turn off the broadcasting, and it stays off untill you repeat those steps with the buttons again and it turns back on.
I have a Dealer friend, and he has a concern that you may “brick” the remote if it’s not a built in normal option for that particular setup. Anyone experience that??
Very doubtful as that button combination could easily be done accidentally by a kid playing with them or being pressed in your pocket.
Does this work for a key fob of a 2010 Toyota Prius?
I don’t think so. But you could try.
This looks very useful, and so many of the other comments were useful as well. My question is when I want to get back into and start my car how do I do that?
We have a lexus and that disabled feature is ok if the dealer wants to leave the fob on your car but otherwise becomes INCONVENIENT ! The auto industry needs to fix this problem and they will . The vehicle should be what wakes up the fob ,not this ongoing communication. I guess going back to actually having to press a button or use the key is now cool again .
Cool
Do I need to do the deactivation every time I leave my car? If not, how to activate again?
De-Activate it any time you feel it may be necessary, to re-activate the FOB, just press any button.
Can you disable one remote and still use the other one normally
Yes
Thank you! Actually these remote keys are quite handy. I put it in my backpack with car documents and almost never take it out. When I come close to my car it senses me and gently turns lights on inside the car. I just grab a door handle and open the door. And the door unlocks automatically. What could be simpler?
Does this work on all Toyota with similar/same features
It should
Thanks. Is this universal or Toyota specific
Other brands may have something similar. Best to check with the dealership.
Yeah the functionality is there, unfortunately nobody is ever going to do this on a daily basis. It's easier to put the keys in a wireless proof box or basket at home.
Works on Lexus also. The sad part is your car is basically a computer. Hackers can get in. They should use a rolling code like on garage doors. That’s why they went from a single code, hackers catching the signal and opening your garage.
Ahh, good suggestion.
Can I ask you a question? You know Lexus will also give you a card key besides the key fob. Even though you turn off the key fob, your card key is still sending the signal (because there is no button to turn off the card key). So does that mean the thief still able to use the signal from the card key to program into the blank key fob?
Unfortunately there is a new method where the thief’s do not need a key to steal your Toyota or Lexus, it’s called CAN injection where they can hook into the CAN system from your headlights.
@@scud3238 I protect my ride with a remote battery kill switch. Lock your hood and they can’t do anything about it. Old tech to beat new tech.
@@hyde4never if it’s sending out a signal then I guess the answer is yes. I’m not sure though because my car didn’t come with one. I would buy a cheap case and keep it in there just to be sure.
