Good info. I never noticed that doors unlock in P! One time I was picking up my daughter at train station. I had my husbands suv. All of a sudden a guy hopped into passenger seat. Then stopped, we looked at each other, I don’t know who was more shocked. It was comical. With a quick apology he jumped out as quick as he could!
One time I parked in a different spot than I normally did because a duplicate car was parked there. I got in their car sat down looked at their drink in the cup holder like uh I realized and then got out lol
Hi Brian, great vid again with options…since Toyota has upgraded their info system maybe a 30 minute overview on all the various shortcuts and tips might be next up… appreciate your time
Thanks Brian! This has always (with our last Toyota) been a concern of mine... I used to have to immediately lock the doors from the console on the door whenever parking my car away from home. :)
Thank you for sharing this Brian! Very helpful! Appreciate all that you share with us customers! You’re one of a “few” who shares in-depth! I for one do appreciate that! Have a great rest of your week! I am! Sunny and 72 this Wednesday afternoon in Iowa! Mark in Iowa.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! I have a 2019 RAV4 and I just did it today!!! I never really liked the doors opening once the car was placed in park. I was telling my husband there had to be a way that this could be modified. I just didn’t feel like looking in the manual at the time. Because we also have a 1999 Toyota RAV4, and time we put the key in the ignition and turn all of the doors automatically lock and I was thinking hey if this is a 1999 Toyota and it has this feature the 2019 should be able to do the same thing or have a better feature than the factory default of going into park and then all of the doors unlocking once again thank you so much for taking time out to make this video for people like me who didn’t feel like investigating the manual
Older Toyota vehicles(at least back to 2004) have this same feature. But you may have to set it up, yourself. There are 3 options I believe. The manual tells you how to do it, with a key turn sequence. If you disconnect the battery, you may have to redo it.
Brian, you are the best resource for all things Toyota. ❤️. Thanks for all you do to educate us about the inner workings of Toyota vehicles. I appreciate you.
It's crazy thus posted because this was bothering me about my 21 Camry SE. This was so helpful, I just went to my car and reset the door locks. Thanks😊
Toyota is way ahead of the game, I own two of them (both 2013 Prius and a 2002 Tacoma I am very satisfied with the outstanding engineering and quality...
Great public notice video. I was aware on how to change the settings for over a decade but good info for those who do not know. I never liked the factory Auto Unlock setup. The Auto Unlock when shifting to park is really only suited for taxi/Uber drivers. That is really the only situation where you would want all your doors to unlock automatically to give easy access to strangers. Really even then it is still preferable to manually control and just push the unlock button. I also dislike the factory auto Parking brake engagement when shifting to park. Turning that off is as simple as holding the button down until auto engagement is disabled. No need to engage the parking brake every time you shift into park. It will just wear out the engagement actuator faster. I’d prefer to have control of when I engage parking brake as well. With that said it is also worth noting that the door locks themselves have a little actuator motor themselves on each handle. I have had to replace a couple of these on my old Prius because they do eventually wear out with excessive use. They can easily cost well over $100 each to replace and thats if you DIY. Pay someone else to do it and you could spend hundreds to a thousand dollars just so your power door locks work again. This usually only becomes an issue on cars over a decade old that have had heavy use. Having the locks engage and auto disengage every time especially if you don’t really need them to is a waste it wears them out faster. This is something you don’t think about until they stop working.
Every safety system has its drawbacks, resulting in more repairs to vehicles that did not need to be done in the past. Lot more use here on the door and lock actuators for starters. I can also see those locks not working if a fuse blows or if the car is on fire with no power available whatsoever, how then do you get out?
@@jayjaynella4539 the door locks still work even if the actuator motor fails. They just are no longer automatic and powered. Can still manually open from inside by moving switch or pulling handle. Gets really irritating though when your door(s) no longer automatically unlock with Smartkey or fob unlock button. At that point you need to manually unlock with key and make sure all doors are locked the old fashioned way when leaving the car. Not a safety issue just really irritating. On a side note when they do begin to fail they usually do so slowly as in they will intermittently work for weeks or months until they finally give up the ghost.
Thank you Brian for sharing your video. I need to save this video and do it in my car. I was wondering this before if the new features had this to lock the door even though your parking. And again thank you so much for sharing your video.
This is a great tip, I found that out while looking around in our RAV4 when I used to drive it. Someone could take advantage of others who don't know about this feature too well. Unfortunately my new Toyota we got this year doesn't have that feature which I wish it did have :(.
Excellent information. With the criminal element running amok in parking lots and intersection stop lights, you can bet our Toyota's will be in lock mode.
your tip was well appreciated. I wish the dealership would do some of this. Instead they earned the negative survey response they got from me on everything. I love the Highlander but the dealership ...not so much!
Cool feature, probably would have it lock in drive and unlock in park, but i have a question, what if you are in neutral or reverse, does the setting change anything for those?
Thanks very much Brian. Always enjoy security tips for my 2023 toyota rav4 hybrid xle premium. Would you please consider doing a short video on installing license plate on the front of the rav4. I had the dealership intall the plate holder on the front but when I went to screw the plate into the holes on the holder, I could only screw it in less than 1/4 inch. Is this the way it is suppose to be? or am I suppose to continue screwing it thru the bumper (which just doesn't seem right). Thanks for your help with this and thanks for all your videos.
Thank you. You should use screws with a depth of an inch max. At an inch, they shouldn’t go through the bumper. You may want to compare your front end play holder with other new RAV4s to see if your salesperson installed the correct one.
I need to check our Tacoma and the Rav4, to see if this is activated...both cars we bought within the past 16 months (2022 and 2023, respectively) and I can't remember if this feature is activated. I am still opening the hood latch instead of the gas fill door lever on the Rav4, LOL. Thanks for the info, Brian!
You know what helps me remember the hood latch vs gas door? Engine is inside the car, so it’s the inside lever. Gas cap is outside the car, so it’s the outside lever. Let me know if that helps!
@@brianruperti Thanks, it's like remembering the difference between CapitAL verses CapitOL, the latter is the building, with a doomed roof like the letter "O".
I have a 2001 Monte Carlo that does do the lock when shifting to Drive, but not sure if my car can do the option of the unlocking because of the older age of the car and no menu screen as you show in the video. Thanks for the video, take care.
our 2011 Camry had this since new. u can also program other features that were available back then it's just done with the key fob sequence. There was no infotainment back then.
I immediately turn that off after getting my highlander when you put it on Park it unlocks all the doors but the nice one is the one that locks the door when you put it in Drive.
Great security tip on making sure doors lock when you go into drive. I knew two different people who had someone rush them at a stop light to open the door. One had his doors locked and got away, the other person did not and was dragged from his car and robbed. He is okay but having doors locked for security is so important.
How do I do it manually? On an older Toyota, in the owner guide book it says to “Shift the shift lever to P or N, and press and hold the driver's door lock switch”
Thanks for sharing! I have a question, i was driving some passengers around recently and noticed that the rear doors don't unlock when they pull on the door handle (I made sure the child lock switch off).
You’re welcome. That’s normal. The front doors will bypass the lock but the back doors you have to physically unlock the car and then open the doors. I believe this is just an extra step added on the off chance a parent/guardian forgot the engage the child locks and the kid is yanking at the handle. Adds a little protection.
Nice video, liked very much. Subscribed. 2018 Camry LE - (no back up 'radar' on rear bumper; no shark fin on roof ) 1 - car is locked, on remote press unlock button once (or twice) and wait 30 sec., car locks itself. 2 - car is unlocked (either just driver's door or all doors) press unlock button once (or twice) wait 30 sec. car locks itself. However, unlocking the driver's door with key in keyhole and then walking away, car does - not - lock itself. My '90 LS 400, (and '91 & '92 LS of a relative,) using the remote, had the same feature, it would lock itself after a few sec. and the same if the key was used in the key hole.
If you have an older generation Toyota with the oudated Entunes 2.0 system, it also has settings to change the lock. Entunes 2.0 doesn't have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and I want Android Auto and unfortunately Toyota won't offer an update leaving customers with the outdated system
Now go tell that to General Motors. I found the menu option to disable the Auto Unlock in my Mom's 14' Malibu but i don't care for the Auto Lock right after it's put in Drive or Reverse. Ford does the locking system one better tho. The doors stay locked after putting it in Park but with one pull of the handle, unlocks and opens any door from the inside. As for the Auto Lock, even back to my 97' Taurus only locked the doors after driving over 10 mph ...both the unlock & lock scenarios are the same in my 22' Maverick.
I live in a small town. I'm always getting into the wrong car! Made me start locking my car to help others from being embarrassed getting into my car by accident.
@Robert Pulliam ... Toronto Canada. As someone who's been in rescue for dogs, seriously please consider leaving your dog at home, if you cannot take them in with you. Dogs die in cars, their organs shut down 20-30 minutes. Regardless of a/c, people steal cars/dogs and want serious rewards in order not to harm a pet. It is terrisum on another front. Note that the sun is still beating through those windows onto your pet. As well many places now have a serious fine if a pet is left in a vehicle. People have been known to call police and smash windows to get a dog out of a car. Please reconsider leaving your pets in a car as they are really stressed being left there.🙏
Our dog goes with us wherever we go he has been very upset over the last year and a half due to moves from TN to FL and back to TN. If we try to leave him at home he barks constantly.
At the beginning of the video it's said that there is a important security feature that all Toyotos have. However, it appears that this security feature is available only on vehicles that have a big touch screen. Many Toyotos do not have such screens.
Thanks I have been driving Toyotas for 20 years and never new this. I hated the doors unlocked. I am waiting on my new 4 runner coming any day . I have a CH-R now. But love I can change that. Woo hoo
@jwmalcolm639 You can also check for a software update on the infotainment system: menu>setup>(scroll down to software update). Is your phone relatively new? (1-3 years old?)
I have an older Lexus which doesnt have the screen . I never liked that feature I used tech stream to set it up so that when I unlock my doors it only unlocks the drivers door ( I am mostly alone) and also when I put my car into park only my drivers doors unlocks which I should change, normally you door will unlock when the door handle inside so no real point in having it auto unlock when I put the car in park lol
Hello Brian, I do have some questions. Do you think you can show that video on RAV4 2022. I checked it but can't find it there. I don't think they have one in RAV4 2022. Thanks
What about when you have your key in your pocket and approach the vehicle and it unlocks automatically? I am always scared because it has the feature that when I approach it unlocks but it will also unlock from the passenger side if someones hand is caught by the sensors. Is there a way to turn this off?
Toronto, On, Canada. Brian THANK YOU for putting out video's and keeping them simple. I will be getting my Rav4 Limited any day. Due to stolen suv's and car jackings this is a really VALUABLE tool. Toronto a vehicle is stolen 54 times a day due to this simple, 2 minute process, these thiefs can copy key and steal it! A fella in the news here, has had bandits trying 9 times to get his, it is still in his driveway. The Club, Trimax boots for tires as well as electronic anti theft he had put in. It is crazy the lengths I'm researching to put layers of theft protection ie, pouch for fob and other electronics on the car and then cameras and necessities in the driveway. And that will be several thousand more out of my pocket! Sure I have insurance but not sure if the drama of owning this vehicle is worth the money its costing on the whole. I'm seriously considering a different car thats not on the top 10 most wanted list.
@@brianruperti Im looking into IGLA system and etching into windows for tracking but thats another 1600.00 plus tax. It does stop thiefs from driving vehicles away as your steering wheel becomes a key board and you put a code of your own. They may get in with relay theft but thats as far as they get. In all honesty, I'm going to climb the ranks at Toyota, they should be covering the cost of protecting these vehicles by giving a better price on the car. Or they should be offering to install this system, protecting our warrantee. My first Toyota a retirement gift, it has been a nightmare.
Not all new toyota has this lock/unlock from/to park option in tbe world . What you showed us is very helpful but i think it's only in North america. Did you know that every option added to a new Toyota for car dealers is an additional cost passed on to the customers. On my infotainment, the only option I have is to unlock all doors at once or only the passenger door when I press the unlock button on my remote control.
You must have the optional radio? My LE was built 5/23/23 and has the latest standard radio with the menu button but doesn't bring me to where you say it should to change the door locks.
I have a 2023 camry trying to follow your steps this is not working not ha e to figure out how to get to the interface you show thanks for this info I'll get it

Our dog goes with us wherever we go he has been very upset over the last year and a half due to moves from TN to FL and back to TN. If we try to leave him at home he barks constantly.
Can you change the setting in older models like a 2014 and 2019 4Runners?
Yes
At the beginning of the video it's said that there is a important security feature that all Toyotos have. However, it appears that this security feature is available only on vehicles that have a big touch screen. Many Toyotos do not have such screens.
Most Toyotas after 2012 have a touch screen so which did you refer to?
@@brianruperti I have a 2011 Camry. Thanks
I’d do more content for you on those models but we so rarely see them in stock sorry
@@brianruperti That's all right. I like your videos anyway. Thanks
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Thanks I have been driving Toyotas for 20 years and never new this. I hated the doors unlocked. I am waiting on my new 4 runner coming any day . I have a CH-R now. But love I can change that. Woo hoo
Nice upgrade!
Cool I just bought one chr in Italy but doesn't have this feature 😢
Great Video Brian!.
Do you have any suggestions how keep wireless android auto connected?
Thank you
Thanks! Yours doesn’t stay connected?
@brianruperti its very inconsistent....I have reinstalled AA....software and app is up to-date. Dealer says unplug battery for a full system reset.
@jwmalcolm639 You can also check for a software update on the infotainment system: menu>setup>(scroll down to software update). Is your phone relatively new? (1-3 years old?)
@brianruperti software is up to date ..checked today
Samsung S20 FE
@jwmalcolm639 try clearing both the phone cache and the app cache. go to Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Storage > Clear Cache
2017 Corolla. Been doing this for years. 🙏🏼
not all, ours 2018 are not locked automatically
I have an older Lexus which doesnt have the screen . I never liked that feature I used tech stream to set it up so that when I unlock my doors it only unlocks the drivers door ( I am mostly alone) and also when I put my car into park only my drivers doors unlocks which I should change, normally you door will unlock when the door handle inside so no real point in having it auto unlock when I put the car in park lol
Great tip... But here in the UK, its not available on my 2022 C-HR
Ahh sorry.
Hello Brian, I do have some questions. Do you think you can show that video on RAV4 2022. I checked it but can't find it there. I don't think they have one in RAV4 2022. Thanks
Hello. For 2022 you will go to menu>setup>customize vehicle>door/lock settings>Auto Unlock shift to P “off”
@@brianruperti thank you so much again that really helps me.
Glad to help!
In my Mitsubishi, the door locks only when vehicle starts to move.
It unlocks when engine is turned off.
Interesting
Great information thank
You’re welcome
What about when you have your key in your pocket and approach the vehicle and it unlocks automatically? I am always scared because it has the feature that when I approach it unlocks but it will also unlock from the passenger side if someones hand is caught by the sensors. Is there a way to turn this off?
It should be set to unlock driver door only and shouldn’t allow a person on other side to activate the unlock signal.
Good deal - thanks for sharing…!!
Thanks for watching!
Sure I have insurance but
not sure if the drama of owning this vehicle is worth the money its costing on the whole.
I'm seriously considering a different car thats not on the top 10 most wanted list.
What a shame that it’s so bad in Canada.
An "unplanned viit" is hilarious! 😂
😉
Not all new toyota has this lock/unlock from/to park option in tbe world . What you showed us is very helpful but i think it's only in North america. Did you know that every option added to a new Toyota for car dealers is an additional cost passed on to the customers. On my infotainment, the only option I have is to unlock all doors at once or only the passenger door when I press the unlock button on my remote control.
You must have the optional radio?
My LE was built 5/23/23 and has the latest standard radio with the menu button but doesn't bring me to where you say it should to change the door locks.
You have a Camry? Then you’ll go to menu>setup>vehicle>customize vehicle>door settings>Auto Unlock shift to P>OFF
Is there a way to do it on a 2014 Toyota Rav 4?
Possibly but that’s the year we see some not able to. 2014 seems to be the switch
I wonder if my 2022 4runner Limited has this function. I drive it and honestly cant remember if the doors lock when put in drive.
It definitely does.
@@brianruperti I will check it out. Thanks
So you would have to manually unlock the vehicle when you exit? Good for security reasons.. very annoying in other ways..
No, you can bypass the lock by simply opening the door as your normally would (works on front doors).
What year and model has the feature to change the auto door lock when shifting into Park and Reverse?
I don’t know every model but I’d say most Toyotas after 2017
Good tip. Thank you.
You’re welcome
What year did Toyota implement this feature?
Most models this could be customized by 2017
I have a 2023 camry trying to follow your steps this is not working not ha e to figure out how to get to the interface you show thanks for this info I'll get it
On the Camry it’s a bit different as it has the prev gen infotainment system. You’ll go to menu>setup>customize vehicle>lock settings
thanks it helped, I was able to change it.
Nice!
Thank you for this video.
My pleasure!
What is this model and year exactly?
2023 Highlander
Let's say you have the doors stay locked when you put the car in Park. Then you get out and lock the doors, but when you come back to unlock the doors will the doors unlock as normal?
Great question. Yes they will operate as normal.
