Tudor Black Bay 79230 vs Seiko SPB147: A Comparison Video

- Today we do a quick comparison between two vintage-inspired divers. Many watch fans are quick to see their similarities and I thought it'd be a good video to show you that there are very little similarities in build and prices.

Seiko over the years have mastered making dive watches and will out perform most Swiss divers in the field any day, including this black bay. Also these Seiko divers wear exceptionally comfortable on the wrist. The Tudor BB has great specs and is higher in the luxury category but is it worth spending $3000 more??? If you’re looking to impress and be fashionable then the BB might be more appealing but I’m willing to bet that most people will be more satisfied with this Seiko IMO. Great review, Cheers!!!
Interesting take on these two. Thanks for sharing.
@earlbee31 Cheers!
Funny, the reason I would never buy that Tudor is the absence of a date. The date is such a useful complication. Too me, getting excited by a lack of date is like getting excited by how simple a watch is because it doesn't tell the time. And white goes with everything. It doesn't clash with any colors. 3 o'clock date is such a classic design
Great review! To be honest I can't wear a watch without a date so that actually gives Seiko the edge for me.
Thanks for dropping by! And yes, I realise the date complication is important to many watch fans.
I would take the Seiko. An honest watch!
That’s a fresh take. Honest watch. Thanks for sharing!
Picked up a SPB147 today and as a BB58 owner I have to say although my Tudor is a keeper had I purchased the SPB147 first I doubt that I would have purchased the Tudor as the Seiko is a lot of watch for the money comparatively.
Glad you like it. These 63mas models are becoming classics for sure.
@@AndyinSG Had to send my SPB147 back as the lume pip execution was terrible. Seiko QC or lack of strikes again. May just get another Tudor BB58 in black this time or try the SPB143 and hope the one I get has no issues.
@@resjon7981 It’s a shame the initial joy of receiving a watch is spoiled by Qc issues. Let’s hope the replacement is better.
@@AndyinSG Yep.
@@AndyinSG Got a SPB143 with no QC issues and running -5 secs out of the box so very pleased. Just need to buy the Silicone strap which comes with the 147.
Great video sir. I think I prefer the seikos skindiver style and slimmer looking case profile. I agree with you about the date window on the Seiko, it's a bit like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa . Thanks for a great video mate.
Thanks for dropping by mate! Yes, the slimmer SPB147 is indeed a winner in terms of dimensions and wearability. But I guess what I find an eyesore may just be a non-issue to many watch fans out there. That’s what makes this hobby fun!
@@AndyinSG I couldn't agree more. Thanks mate 👍
Great video thanks. Had some financial difficulties, had to let go my bb58 for the spb147. I must say it is satisfying enough. However i will be getting the bb58 again one day when things are better. Lots of love from Malaysia.
Thanks for dropping by. Both are nice so I am glad the 147 can make do for now.
That said, I hope you are reunited with the BB58 soon.
I think the Tudor looks kinda boring and the Seiko, for whatever reason, looks more modern. 🤷♂️
Interesting observation. Thanks for sharing.
Yah i think the black bay could use a little bigger bezel with ceramic. That would make it look so much more modern
HI Andy, I just wanted to say THANKYOU for your impartial Bilaterally Balanced comparison of these TWO ICONS.
Personally, am a SEIKO FAN BOY but it's always refreshing to see how well SEIKO compares with its Swiss counterparts albeit the huge price difference.
I also like that you took the time to Synchronize both watches to tick in unison- that speaks of your character.
Again, my gratitude.
Malik, USA 🇺🇸
Cheers
Thanks for your kind words! Great to have you watch my videos.
I might do a current shootout between these two icons again. But I have to admit my feelings have changed now. Let me know if you’d like to watch the 2023 version of this shootout.
@@AndyinSG
Sure bro, we can't have enough of SEIKO duking it out with the SWISS Giants.
SEIKO is always the Underdog and comparison videos like this helps us see SEIKO Strong and weak points....
Kinda like Comparing the TOYOTA LANDCRUISER with the Mercedes G WAGON.
Thanks again and hope you visit USA 🇺🇸 soon. The watch community here is so small as the majority have transitioned to G Shocks or Apple Watches and rarely do you see Ppl with Analog Quartz let alone automatic watches. So, yes your content is highly appreciated by the few of us.
Cheers
@@1malikalik thanks a lot for your input. You’re right in your observations.
Keep a lookout for that video!
Seiko's spirit of making watches is daily functional use, that include the date window.
Subscribed! Hello from a fellow Singaporeans. Thanks for the comparison
Hey man, thanks for the sub! Appreciate the support.
I had a black bay just couldn’t get past the big slab sides. Makes the watch look cheap and unrefined. I have the seiko 143 absolutely love the case even on my eight inch wrist it looks great.
I hate the slab sides on the 41mm. You’re right, they should have done better.
The seiko looks much better
Is it or you could not afford the Tudor?
@@WomenHitTheWall Lol i had the black bb58 and then the blue that are much nicer than this Tudor. My investment watch is my Sub Hulk. So i guess no i can't afford them???
It does - except that date wheel.
@@poulwinther
Agree 100% on the date wheel.
I got the 143 version as the date wheel fits in with the dial better.
As much as I like the Blackbay.. I actually prefer the seiko 😏👌
I guess Im quite randomly asking but does anybody know a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
@Kieran Tripp Flixportal :)
@Terry Rudy Thank you, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I appreciate it !
@Kieran Tripp You are welcome :)
was comparing the 143 and 147 and went for the latter since i found a good deal on it. if you compare the gold font on both dial, you realise the seiko's font are abit more subtle and darker. under good lighting, the 147 is really beautiful. under low lighting, the dial may seems dull by comparison
These 63mas all look good. I bet they gonna become classic in future.
Enjoy your watch in good health.
I'll take the Seiko with the date window over the Tudor all day long.
That seiko looks sick dam
I find the Seiko better. In every aspect. The design. Functionality and cost.
In my experience after having both watches for a significant period of time, the Seiko has an inferior movement. No questions on that. But we’re at very different price points here, so I guess it’s not a major issue.
In honesty, there are some design features on the Seiko I find more attractive than the Tudor. I like the brushed sides and less “slab look” of the case.
This Seiko is awesome
I have both the 143 and 149 and I just wish their end links lined up like the Tudor. That’s the biggest difference to me is the overall fit and finish.
149 is just cool! Congrats.
Which one you would choose to keep?
@@thepickyreviewer I like the 143 over the 149 and absolutely choose my BB black bezel over both :) i wish the 149 had a blue bezel to match the dial.
@@Trugoy1 Thank you so much for your reply. I had the 143 but sold it eventually. The dial looked faded to me and the bracelet was never comfortable. So I was thinking maybe the 149 or 147 offers better contrast and styling.
Great video bro. Appreciate the attention to detail!
Thanks so much for your kind words. Sure hope you found it useful. 👍
The white background on Seiko's date triggers my OCD.
That makes two of us!
the white date wheel is the only reason stopping me from getting that near perfect seiko
Totally agree with you. I very much prefer non-contrast date wheel. But sometimes gotta look past these little things in this hobby.
There is still the cyclops lens barrier which I cannot go past.
Here's the thing, to me the Seiko is by far the better looking watch, and I own a bb58 and it irks me to say that... but, and it's a big but, a butt ugly date window absolutely ruins the overall aesthetic of the Seiko. Such a shame, I'd love to pocket a couple of K and trade down to the Seiko but damn, what were they thinking
Totally agree with you on the date wheel. No-date would be so cool. But I think that will never happen with Seiko.
Plus they made the date window white which makes it stick out even more 🤦♂️
I stand corrected just checked my Tudor BB58 and there is no ghost position lol. I was turning the crown anti-clockwise in the movement winding position and thinking it was a ghost position , silly me!
Ah, mystery solved!
Congrats on your BB58. Great piece.
@@AndyinSG Thanks, it gets a lot of wrist time. Lucky I solved the mystery without going to the AD as that would have been rather embarassing.
@@desjon6012 I’m sure all will end up well, with a good laugh 😄
Both are beautiful! Great video. Taking prixe into consideration i would choose the seiko. TUDOR has a ghost date dial, misaligned bezel, 60 click uni directional bezel. Mmmmmm i am confused why you keep saying the Tudor is at a much higher level? Mmmm🤔
Thanks for dropping by. The Tudor does not have a ghost date position if that’s what you’re talking about. One pop and it’s time-setting function.
Why do I keep saying the Tudor is higher level? I guess the bezel action, the feel of the crown when setting time and winding, the overall finishing, the dial printing, and also the bracelet quality (not mentioned in video), they just made me feel that it is on a higher level.
@@AndyinSG 4.5k more level? I really enjoy your revies i wish you did more than 1 a Week
@@culichi0776 Thanks for the kind words. No, I don’t think one is 4.5x better than the other. But when I held both, I could definitely feel the difference in overall feel and quality. Cannot quantify exactly how much better though.
@@culichi0776 I’d like to do more videos. It all depends on how much time I got on my hands and if I get enough loan sets. But thanks for your support!
Tudor does have a ghost position but it is still better than the Seiko.
The main distance is calibre. Despite the attractive appearance of Seiko, but I found that it has an error of 20-30 seconds every day, and it gets 2-3 minutes faster in a few days.
That doesn’t sound so good. Thanks for sharing.
It’s a shame I never take accuracy into consideration because I never wear them much.
Absolute bullsjhit , have sarb 035 and sbdc053 both 6r15 , from 1 to 4 seconds a day faster , more you wear , more its precise , 0 beat error ...
Out of the 6 Seiko’s I’ve had, 5 had an average accuracy within chronometer specs. 3 of them got a regulation at a watchmaker though, because they can be bad out of the box. If you get one that runs bad, just get it regulated.
Get a demagnitizer for like 15 bucks. My seiko 187 went from +25 spd to +1 spd.
Spb147 got discontinued. Its price is about to skyrocket in the future. One year of release and boom replaced. Reminds me of the skx story.
That’s news indeed. Perhaps stock up when they are still available. 👍
I can’t find anything about it being discontinued…
In Greece there is no store you can find it. Called the official dealership and got myself the last one, instead they are promoting the spb239. Slightly different dial color with nato strap.
complete nonsense, now its 2023 and spb147 is still readily available
147 wins hands down in the looks department BUT accuracy of this timepiece is at best erratic... the movement in it is a cheap one with lots variance and unpredictable timekeeping
I heard plenty of user complaints about the 6R35. It’s a shame really. I sure hope the percentage of rubbish movements isn’t too high.
That said, I agree with on the 63mas in the looks department. Really nice looking watch.
exact reason i never got one spending 1200 on a watch with chance of having +/- 20 seconds a day is horrendous
Get a cheap demagnitizer from ebay. Problem solved
The Seiko looks nicer. Just not a fan of the red bezel or the bulk on the tudor. Plus I prefer the bb36 as an everyday watch.
Agreed on the bulk of the BB. The BB36 is a great choice. 👍
Nice comparision..allright
Thanks!
Tudor is out of my budget. Im actually comparing spb143 and 147.
147 all the way. Add in the stock bracelet too. You’re welcome.
1200 is for rubber right. With SS bracelet that will be 1600+. Is that right
@@Laughingorcorp if you’re in Singapore, look for Eric at Hour Boutique. He may be able to do a 147 with bracelet deal.
I love my seikos, but that white date wheel doesn’t match the rest of the watch.
Agreed!
Looks SPB 147, everything else BB
The tudor looks cheap I think Seiko all day
Tudor for the win
