It is extremely difficult to measure art, literature, culture, and the people who have produced them in the past according to the moral standards of our present society. One can examine them and juxtapose them with other or contemporary forms of expression. This creates tension and new perspectives that are correct and important. However, the person behind the artist must always be seen in relation to their background and the temporal and societal influences of their time. If one removes them from this context, not only does their person lose their identity but so does their work. And since our present society largely relies on the artistic and cultural achievements of our ancestors, this detachment would mean a detachment from our cultural history.
