  • It was in 1943, during the German occupation of Paris, that Françoise Gilot met Pablo Picasso. She was 21; he was 61. Gilot would later write, "It was a catastrophe I didn't want to avoid." Now 95, Gilot talked with Anthony Mason about her life as an artist, and as a muse and partner to one of the most famous and controversial painters in history.

    what an impressive, inspiring woman! And yet, there's a lot of "Picasso this, Picasso that...". Will we ever be able to just appreciate female artists on their own? It would be so much more interesting if the focus was on her brilliant and huge body of work instead of her relationship with men. If it can't be avoided to bring up Picasso, it should also be mentioned how he tried to ruin her artistic career out of sheer vengefulness. Even if that's not what people want to know about someone who's considered a "genius" and demigod of the art world.

    There is something a little disjointed in this combination of, on one hand, insisting on being herself, having her personality, being this fearless self-possessed creator, and on the other marrying, not once but twice, a much older and much more famous man.

    • @marklimbrick
      @marklimbrick 2 года назад

      She can handle them on her terms. Bigger things in life than fame and ego. Couldn't do anything for the painters issues so moved onto the scientist who had more sense and so got to share her life.

      @@marklimbrick But you never hear of male self-possessed creators marrying once, let alone twice, a famous woman (unless she is famous for being beautiful). What I mean is that her implicit feminism, or at least profession of independance, feels a little bogus. (I don't understand what your verbless sentence "bigger things in life than fame and ego" refer to).

      If you understand art, you would see that Francoise Gilot is a brilliant artist in her own right. Her abstract work is influenced by Picasso, but there is a brightness, and nuanced joy in her work that I don’t particularly feel in Picasso’s. Indescribable beauty in the genius work of Picasso, but for me, not always possessing a “joie de vivre”. She copied him? No. Influenced by him? Yes.

    Une femme sans talent bourgeoise et sans aucune originalités elle se croyait une grande artiste elle restera dans la postérité que comme un modele de Picasso .Elle a largement profiter de sa notoriété et si elle aurais pas ete la compagne de Picasso elle n'aurais fait aucune carriere elle n'a fait que singer la peinture du grand maitre surtout la periode ou elle a partagé sa vie et par la suite ses tableaux de figures géométriques comme le font les mauvais peintres .Moi je la vois comme une femme pretentieuse et opportuniste ayant construit sa carriere sur la seul notoriete de Picasso ce n'est pas par hasard si aucune galerie et musées pendant plus d'une decennie n'ont jamais voulu exposé ses tableaux elle a aucun talent.
