Zoom MultiStomp + Sawtooth Wave = A Whole Synth?!

  • Although it lost out to the Digitech Polara in my recent reverb shoot-out, the Zoom MS-70CDR's real strength comes from the fact that it's a "multi-effect" in the true sense of the term: you can run multiple different effect algorithms at the same time.
    So bearing this fact in mind, and adding to that the wide range of effects it has on offer, I got to thinking: given only the most basic input of a raw sawtooth wave, could you build the rest of a synth using just the Zoom?..

      I own a Monologue and couldn't be happier with it. That said, all the Monologue contributes to this particular video is a sawtooth wave with a decay-sustain-release envelope -which many synths can give you. I would be curious to know how the same effects would sound with another synth.It may be that the warmth and quality of the Monologue's sawtooth oscillator actually makes a difference. Alternatively, a sawtooth is just a sawtooth...

      @@telantas I have a CDR-70 a Monologue, a sub 37, a OP-1, a Alesis Ion, a Roland JP-08 and a Herbs and Stone - Liquid Foam. The pedal sounds great on most Saw Tooth patches, and Pad Patches. Like he said the delays in the CDR-70 are pretty great for a under $100 pedal. I wish the CDRs bit crusher, ring mod and more glitch effects were better. But it does "lush" very well.

    Wow, impressive! Effects really are the spices when "cooking sounds". For the 25 years I am in this music-making-game, I pretty much disregarded effects and concentrated on the sources. This fx seasoning can really push any source into any direction. Makes sound sources way more versatile. Great video, thank you! ☺️

    Under the hood, MS-50g, MS-70cdr, MS-60b and the G1Xon are all the same engine. The G1Xon includes an expression pedal, drums and a looper but is otherwise the same. The patches are interchangeable. The MS-50g is setup to be the most diversified out of the box but the others can share patches without any problems.

    I paired a Boss RV6 with a Dübreq Stylophone Gen X-1 once and you'd be amazed how much that already alters the sound and making it even more massive. Especially if you turn on the sub oscillator of it and add a little bit of its own delay. Adding an effect pedal really almost always values-up an instrument and really makes you realize how essential a multi-effect device is in your little studio.

      odd?, i recorded a synth volca bass creation with the zoom ms 70, basic delay and reverb only and it sounded awful. a dirty, distorted sound and it wasn't my input/recording levels. i retried with my simple donner delay and the results were much better. i'm now finding something dubious about the zoom performance, a lot of the presets are over the top and i think you have to watch out when chaining a few together. whet through most of the effects and didn't like the majority. maybe my synth rates (wobble?) were just totally out of sync with the effects rates although i turned everything down to about half on the zoom. also watched with interest your zoom vs polara shoot out - very revealing! i also had a chorus on my original zoom chain which i turned off before recording because it sounded so bad to my ear. i also have a line select at the beginning of the chain so i can turn everything off quickly. i wonder if that could be the culprit for the grating sound? thanks again.

    Nice concept and execution here! I recently rediscovered my Zoom MultiFX, and am enjoying it. I find its modulations are the best - chorus, phaser, vibe, etc. And the delays, yes. EQ's and boostscare good,
    too. OD's and amps are poor. A useful unit! My regret is it's inability to quickly turn on and off separate fx. I MIGHT invest in one of the multi-stomp versions, just to be able to do this! Thanks for the video. I play guitar, BTW.

      I thought you wrote "vocals"...the problem with stomp box reverbs compared to rack reverbs is that they are all 16 or 18 bit and the rack gear is all 24 bit today. Also the A/D and D/A converters don't sound as good on cheap gear. But if the end track or gig sounds good, then these technical matters don't really matter. I use an old 16 bit zoom rack verb because I like the tone of it of it, which has a lot to do with it's converters.

      @@MFKR696 no, not really, not if you don't want to. But while you're in the business of questioning my transparency and integrity, here's the full run-down:
      I have never been paid directly, in cash money, by any gear manufacturer for a video (and given the size of my channel, I very much doubt I ever will).
      To this day, the only gear I've featured on my channel that I received gratis from a manufacturer was the Arturia Minibrute 2S and DrumBrute. I detailed that fact in the first video here: ruclips.net/video/_tgRjQghLVE/видео.html and subsequently it's noted in every video description of any video that either bit of gear was featured in.
      My Minilogue I received from Korg as payment for a patch pack I created for them for the Monologue. You can find that patch pack here: www.korg.com/uk/news/2019/0322/
      That is the sum total of all the engagements I've had with manufacturers and distributors.
      Also, just ask yourself the question: why would Zoom engage with a channel with 12k subs to feature a 5 year old pedal?
      Not everyone is out to mislead you. Not everyone is a corporate shill. You don't have to be a cynic 100 percent of the time.

    I have an MS-50g and I’ve barely scratched the surface (and haven’t even updated the firmware yet!!) These are great pedals for the price (I got mine as a “factory resealed” for just under $90!!) and they’re battery powered. I’ve got a monologue and some Volcas (also battery powered) so you can take these and make amazing sounds anywhere!! Paired with my Roland Go mixer and iPhone I can make videos wherever. The devices are still fairly new to me and I’ve yet to master them to film myself, but soon...

      It's DEFINITELY worth updating the firmware. I don't know if it's the same with the 50g, but on the 70 they added a bunch of the premium effects from the ms-100 for free

    • @localtechnique

      Definitely upgrade the firmware. It enables using the Effect Manager desktop software for swapping in and out effects. Alas, there isn't enough storage on the pedal to hold all of them at once.

    It's not pitch tracking that has "given up" on the Korg; that's aliasing distortion that you're hearing (starts generating weird lower harmonics etc)

    Great presentation on this ZOOM pedal. Your videos are very comprehensive indeed! I have been busy creating new patches on my microfreak, do you think using one pedal per synth is the way to go or not? I think this pedal covers all the effects one could ever need. Cheers! 🎹🎶😎

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  3 года назад

      It depends on your set up. It's the way I often end up working, but that's more because don't have a mixer in my setup right now. There is a good argument for a mixer + aux sends (although, as I noted - the Zoom isn't well suited to that role).

    After 30 years of crafting my sound design skills, I realized last year that effects can be 50% of sound design....and so this year I have purchased three Zooms and a Korg Nutekt to add to my sound design. I also a few years ago invested in a stereo graphic equalizer to widen the stereo image of my synths with cut and boost frequency to the left and right channels.

    • @huli8557

    • @WildernessMusic_GentleSerene
      @WildernessMusic_GentleSerene 3 года назад +1

      @@huli8557 It was a Pyle. I wanted a cheap graphic equalizer so I would get some warm distortion added when boosting all the frequencies. But any brand of EQ would probably be okay.

    Love the Zoom pedal. Great stuff in this video. My only criticism (of the zoom) is that you can't dial the bpm in by hand. You have to use tap tempo. I just wish they'd added a bpm page.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  5 лет назад +3

      Yeah, that's a bummer, but if you have an app to convert bpm to milliseconds, you can use the absolute values on the delay times at least.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  4 года назад

      No, I'll often reduce the output if I have multiple modules to avoid digital clipping between them. But it's dependent on the patch.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  3 года назад

      That's an interesting question, there is some (limited) routing you can do, but I think it's more for choosing different paths within the chain, I don't think two chains can run in parallel.

    Very nice.. How do you connect the synth to the zoom and then to your monitors. Thank you.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  2 года назад +2

      From the synth to the Zoom I use a standard instrument cable (1/4" TS cable). To my monitors - well in this case I take two instrument cables out into my audio interface or mixer, but I suppose you could plug directly into monitors if you wanted.

    does the zoom handle well the level of the synth signal? with not a few pedals you have to dial down which takes the power out of the sound...

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, at the input, but when you start stacking multiple effects you need to watch out for digital clipping - luckily every effect has a master volume so you can manage that.
