I'm sorry I love all Evanescence but to say Call Me When You're Sober is their best song is Ludicrous. It's a good song but definitely not Their Best. Whisper,Imaginary,Where Will You Go, Field of Innocence, Even In Death, Imaginary,The Change,Whisper, Listen To The Rain,What You Want My Heart Is Broken, even Eternal which is an amazing instrumental are all better songs than Call Me When You're Sober. And there are Many many more but those are a few of my Suggestions.

Serious subject. Lithium is a toxic metal which has been used for controlling bipolar disorder.... The song fits.... Great song! The inner battle between feeling like Superman or feeling suicidal... On Lithium, a person cannot fly but they don't sink too far either.... They get kinda numb in between the extremes. Yes! Literally mood swings!
Pretty good analogy Damien, I've been on lithium now for 16 years or so. I am bipolar never depressed just high anxiety which can jump to manic state without any notice. Lithium and I have a love-hate relationship. There isn't a day that goes by that I wish I could stop taking it. But if I forget to take it then I remember why I'm on it. Was a good song haven't seen many artists tap into this topic as spot-on as she was. Makes me wonder if she was writing that about a loved one or maybe even herself. Whomever it was about I wish them peace.

Lithium was fairly commonly used in treatment of mental disorders including bi-polar. It has problems though in that it interacts with many drugs including an over the counter cough medicine. It has a side effect of "cloudy thinking and hazyness". I am no doctor, just a few things I have heard. When Amy sings "Wonder whats wrong with me?" and "Don't want to lock 'ME' up inside" she is singing the dilemma. Sanity at such a price or the freedom to fly. Imagine having to choose to live a grey life of sanity or a colorful world of insane choices. It is a bit exaggerated here but the dilemma is real for some. Thats what this song is about.
I hope someone else has already said this, but just in case: Amy wrote this song at age 16 for guitar, but later as her band took off, she decided to bring this song out, and rewrote it for a concert grand piano, which is the piano you see her playing in the beginning of the video. She was not singing about the joys of taking Lithium. Quite the opposite. In an interview, she was quoted as saying: "It's not literal about the drug for me, I've never taken lithium before. It's sort of a metaphor about numbness and happiness... it's me looking at happiness in a negative way because I've always been... kind of afraid to be happy. Like with the band and the art and everything else, it's always like I'm never letting myself break through into the happiness it seems like, because it's not cool or something. And describing happiness is lithium, it's like saying 'that's numbness, I won't be able to be an artist anymore if I'm happy', which is hilarious because that's just not true, I'm happy. So it's... this fight within the song of... 'do I do this and get out of here and get happy or do I wallow in it like I always do?' and it's cool because at the end of the song I say 'I'm going to let it go', like I am going to be happy."

Amy certainly can draw you in with her vocals. But also at the same time every look she has had throughout every video the band has done certainly intrigues you as well.
I was 11 or 12 when this band first showed up. I heard "Bring Me to Life" and "Going Under" and "My Immortal" on the radio and loved Amy's voice so much that I got the album. I still remember my brother coming into my room to sleep on stormy nights, and he'd ask me to put that album on. I didn't keep up with them for several years after, but when I was reminded of them, I heard some stuff from The Open Door, like this song, and went and bought that album and it's my favorite of theirs still. I like every song on it. As I've gotten older, and my tastes have evolved, I kind of wish Evanescence made more complex music. I don't think the album after The Open Door, or their new album that they just released a few weeks ago, is as interesting to me now. But Amy's vocals are always fantastic. I sometimes think of this band as a guilty pleasure because of the dramatic lyrics and basic song structures, but I feel bad for saying that because they are talented and have a cool sound. In the end, that's kind of all that matters. I'm talking too much. "Sweet Sacrifice" is a cool song. Just a quick, fun, cool sounding start to The Open Door. Check that one out.
