Toyota midnight blue is the classic 90's paint code. Sandy taupe always looks good but midnight blue is true old school cool.
I have an 80's series with that color is beautiful
I worked in forestry all my life, spaying equipment, tractors, fire trucks, tankers anything with a motor basically, often in remote areas and the number one cardinal rule of the bush.................."to keep it simple" you have nothing to break or to try and fault find.
Bro I always got gassed when 24/7 dropped a video. But your production and sense of humour and quality. No one on RUclips like you bro never change. Best 4x4 channel period.
My current VDJ78 is 5 years old and do mostly desert trips. Most of the proposed mods are unnecessary. The standard skinnys are awesome and are the reason why the fuel consumption is so good on trips like the Canning. Last time I used 138L between Kunawarritji and Wiluna and 108L between Kunawarritji and Bililuna. I also keep mine very light so it stays capable. Partial track correction is easy by simply using the zero offset 105 series 16x6.5 steel tubeless rims on the rear. Flares and muddies are just for looks. Parabolic springs saved me 46 kgs. Factory shocks are actually better than the first aftermarket shocks I used. My best mods are the stereo (adds Google mapping to supplement Oziexplorer and Hema and you can talk to the thing). Standard seats were upgraded in 2017 and I like them. Keep the rear fitout light weight.
Just to add 180L stand tanks is heaps and very reliable. Seen too many probs with aftermarket fuel tanks and they add considerable weight.
This is the part number for the 105 series zero offset skinny tubeless wheels. Genuine Toyota WHEEL SUB-ASSY DISC 42601-60622
it’s always good to get information from people who have actual experience doing harsh environment trips in a vehicle and giving honest feedback, your information is like gold, thanks for taking the time.
@@FRERABRETZ1 Thankyou. I think you said it well.
A set of 255/85r16 muddies on those stock steelies will look the goods and perform heaps well!
That is the size I want to put on my 2023 Tacoma TRD Off Road so I get a larger tire and more ground clearance without lift or trimming.
Just spend the 3.5k on Multidrive's track correction if he wants it corrected. Rated to 3780 GVM. No bearing issues which he'll always be thinking about, no insurance risks and no risk of passing a RWC when selling.
On a Drive Axle , the Deep Dish wheels are the way to go . Remember , he's going to bigger tyres too at some point .
Wheel bearings and SWIVEL bearings/bushings are a bigger concern on bigger offset rims .
@@johncunningham4820 -50 offset on my 76 for 7 years and bearings are still fine to my suprise as I was expecting to need to replace them more often.
@@cyclemoto8744 . Rear I assume .
As I said , Front is slightly more problematic .
@@johncunningham4820 I was agreeing
As somebody who has owned a couple landcruisers: I would skip the side steps and invest in a proper rear wheel carrier, over time the area on which the bracket is attached to gets damaged and the door starts to sag, all exaggerated when you put bigger wheel on, which I assume you’re going to do here.
A set of proper shocks is my other suggestion. Skip the accessories that are attached to side of car.
Cant wait to see how the budget build works out guys. We’ve been waiting for the track correction for 17 years Toyota. I’m waiting for these to go on sale in my next life 😅
Excellent Ronny! Great timing for me - I have a Sandy Taupe one of these on order from Toyota (due about March 25).
What was initial wait time from signed contracts?
I am very interested in this project, as I too transitioned from a modified Prado to a Troopy.
Every time I did a modification inside the Prado the available space reduced significantly.
At the finish, I realised that I was working on the wrong vehicle platform and swapped to the Troopy.
I heard Ronny’s comments about the narrrow track on the rear axle, but did not appreciate this fully until I spent four days on K’Gari (Fraser Island) and experienced the rear axle wandering, which was uncomfortable and very concerning indeed - honestly, think I will be looking at a rear axle conversion to address this, it was that bad.
I have my higher cabinets, fridge and table on the left (port) side of the vehicle and the awning is this side too - this just works so well. I also have a rear door table for quick coffees and sorting out gear.
I did fork out for upgraded seats, but went for Stratos, which were cheaper and included adjustable spring suspension.
One thing I have done, which works well is to be able to access all sorts of items from the back doors. Molle panels from Mission 4x4 and matching pouches, plus Velcro’s pouches from Aussie Outback Supplies have made this possible and very efficient.
I look forward to seeing how this build progresses and can’t wait until Harry Fisher gets a Troopy too!
Okay, that’s a bit of a stir, but isn’t that what makes RUclips fun?
Ronny Dahl as a mentor your good to go!!
My dream troopy! 5 seater and the exact colour! So excited for this build! Also the price tag is ridiculous but troopies are so cool!!
agree
I still can't get passed what these sell for and the little you get for your money. Then you got to do some modifications on top plus some comforts...Personally I would never buy one even if I was financially able too...Fair enough you get a bare bones platform to go nuts on, but that's my point these should be 50k vehicles, that would be more realistic...
That’s Tank 300 money
I agree but the problem is people are happy to pay the 100 odd k. If people stopped buying them then they would be 50k.
You’re not paying for the features inside the car though, you’re paying for the solid chunks of metal under the car that don’t give up at the first sight of a rough road. I agree it’s still overpriced, but no one else makes anything close either - if there was money to be made then someone else would have jumped in and taken the market already.
Understand but you are missing the point. If what you want is solid axles, easy ability to run bigger tyres, a bulk load of aftermarket bits and a practical interior, what else would you buy? What else has solid axles? They charge what they do, because they can. If you don't care about all the modern electronic dodads then these don't really have competition in the marketplace.
You miss the point. You look at it from the respective of someone who likes aircon, massage seats and so and who will never leave the paved road. From that perspective, you‘re totally correct.
But looking at it from the side of people who go where most vehicles can‘t go they’re worth the money because you get and excellent offroader that‘s reliable, easy to repair yourself and just a great companion on your adventures.
Love this project, so good to have help to make informed choices and stay in budget! Good luck
Can't wait for this one, I hope it really stick to the budget and a realistic build! Hope to see some diy stuff too!
To many unrealistic builds out there that are unrealistic for most!
Another fantastic 2.8 adventure to watch unfold 🤩
I have one of these on order as well! Sandy Taupe. Have asked to be put on the waiting list when the manual is released!
i bought the arm traveler from his website all the way from Bahrain , very nice product and comfortable . This guy is a genius and Toyota needs to hire him for aftermarket parts . i wish he could talk about the LC 70 series V6 petrol ( Short Base ) which is popular in middle east
Ps we had a troopie trakka conversion for years. Best tourer/overland vehicle. Just the right size.had a screened enclosure which attached to the rear and opened up when you popped the roof. Offered shade and a bug free environment. Kinda like an oz tent screened enclosure. You gunna have a lot of fun
Good to see Chris the cameraman again :)
Great video. Look forward to the build.
Writing off your mates mods as a business expense is legendary
I really enjoyed this video dude. I’m looking forward to more content around the build. Hurry up and pump it out haha. Keep it up Ronny-D.
Been looking forward to Paul’s troopie purchase.PLEEEEEEEASE let’s see 255/85/16 rubber on silver steelie 16x7 to keep his 33” tyre and no wheel arch flares will save him $.
Buds Customs do a lower cost alternative for track correction. +30 each side I think which is very acceptable, and minimal poke with 255 will keep all wheels same offset.
troopies without flares are just cool.
I would also go mud terrains. The reasons I personally don't because I live in Canada and I don't want to have a dedicated set of winter tires and have to swap them every season. I also don't off road frequently like you do. All terrains are load rated, better on pavement but still functional off road AND they can be winter rated. But if I live somewhere warmer and seen more dirt, I'd go muddies.
Funny, that hole Torbs ended up in is still very much there when we crossed that in June
Torbs unit was way too heavy, especially at the back
from the aerial shot it looked pretty dry on the sides, why didn't they just stay out of the mud in the middle?
@@MrRobinski because a video about taking chicken tracks would be dull?
I'm curious to see how this build will go. For what it's worth I think it should stay as basic as possible. As nice as it can be to have some luxury features, I feel that Simplicity is usually best
Also I LOVE the body color on that! It definitely fits the bill!!
That colour is terrible for a bush car guaranteed to get scratched, the budget will need to include $5-10k for paint protection.
@@Corey-pd3mi It doesn't matter what color your vehicle is. If it's going off-road it's going to get scratched. Regardless that color is probably the best one I've seen for that particular series Land Cruiser.
@@chrisfanchier2318 they all get scratched, but some show the scratches more
Pretty sure Toyota puts the engineers on the front and the work experience kids on the back.
Workmate utes come on 33's aswell i think 🤔
Keen for this build from you blokes and i cannot bloody wait for the CSR crossing 🤝
Nice to see you here mate, maybe someday you can do a collaboration with Ronny, I hope the camel meat was delicious 😋
@Offroad_namibia G'day mate, Ronny has been a huge inspiration for me personally over the years and remains my faveroute channel to watch to this day, ive got a few faveroutes but RD would be number one for me. That would be a dream mate, however I think it will stay a dream 😂
The camel meat is delicious. Cheers 👍
If you haven't bought your rims yet, think about this: Check out King Wheels rims, in the alloy Hurricane II pattern. They are rated to 1600Kg, which is 100Kg more than ROH.
In 5/150 PCD they come in a neg 5 offset, and neg 25 (they also do a neg 50). But with a neg 25 on the rear you fix a lot of the offset issue and you are LEGAL. If you fit neg 50s you will be ILLEGAL. Also, the extra force/wear on bearings that you get with neg 50 is halved.
Put Koni Raid 90 heavy fully hydrologic shocks on it, will last the lift of the vehicle. Toughest shock out there, use to use them on Dakar rally support vehicles.
They don't look fancy, but are extremely tough.
My 2 cents, love your work Ronny
love your work mate and I don't want to be picky but... if the fuel goes through it first it is the primary filter and the factory filter becomes the secondary filter. Everyone on RUclips gets it arse about. keep up the great content. cheers.
And this is why i like the 70 series .. it has all the shit i need and none of the crap i dont need or use ..
The truth is your still paying for the crap that’s not included
@@michaelhermans4753 thats ok atleast i dont have the bs
Ronny! Check out Tinkerer's Adventure on his electric setup. I'm sure your mate has already got most of his setup squared away, but the traditional camp/vehicle setup does seem to be too bulky. Also, although the troopy doesn't seem to come with an inverter from factory I think it makes a lot of sense to be able to shift the troopy's layout as needed other than a hardwired setup. Looking forward to the build!
Wish we could get these in the US. I’m grating to the point of minimalist with keeping the vehicle stock and just use some bags to bring what I need. I only plan on doing a few days at a time for now and really here in the east a coast of the US you are not really far from anything. Cheers.
Awesome, looking forward to this build. Hopefully can get some ideas for my own budget orientated build. Keep up the great work 🤘
for the benchtop on the outside make the cabinet sit maybe 30mm higher then the window and put it on runners so he can open a gullwing and slide out a table to work on
Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT... Best all terrain tire build strong like a Mud terrain 👌
Yes 👍, I put a set on my 4wd Ute, worth the money imo , excellent all rounder with strong side biters and protection and quiet on the black stuff, so far .
I have a sandy but I'm really starting to fall in love with the blue. you really don't see much of the blues around.
Would love to see this build be done in one massive video. It’ll be a huge edit to undertake but good lawd, it’ll be an awesome video!
Thanks Chris for showing your Rig.
Ever thought about getting a reverse awning?
270 drivers side version?
Of course only if the idea of cabinets & blocking the view issue need rectification.
I had the choice.
With my roll out kitchen on the right (rearward looking forward) I elected drives side mounting also, covers the kitchen in weather.
He could then revert everything back over as you say. Being on the right causes zero issues and you can observe it better as a driver against damage in tight sections, that's a real plus.
An interesting video and i'm not into 4WDriving. Good job.
Fantastic episode as usual, looking forward to this build
A lot of what was done on the Prado will work on a LC 200, just some extra space in the 200
Mud terrain’s give you side wall protection, especially on the CSR
Troopy has been around for a long time. Perhaps good quality second hands part can help to squeeze in under the budget theme.
A set of mods you should do is breathers for diffx2 gbox and tcase etc ❤
Some diff locks if you don’t have already, better shocks to handle heat, some better tyres and an aluminium roof rack and a portable tirfor winch and a few plastic crates in back and you’re good as gold. Everything else is a wank
Finaly, some one in the youtube comments gets it. I have screen shot this.
As a surveyor of several yrs all over the NT and Nothern SA, 90k km pa, and 2x 80series + 2x GU Patrol, driving all seaons on all types of B, C ,D grade tracks, inc blacksoil plains in the wet, all I can really say is to 'BUILD LIGHTNESS'.
For all the nuf nufs out there who want to fit cupboards, draws, uprighfridges... ie all the accessories, all thr fruit... you are be over sold by the industry, and car will turn in to a heavy overweight pig to drive, with high fuel consumption, that is difficult to recover.
If you have a wagon, Q: can you sleep in the back if you need to ? If not, why not ?. It is a wagon, and you should be able to sleep in it if needed.
Do not fit a RTT or any other heavy thing on the roof.
A lightweight steel roo bar is fine, even alloy. If you hit livestock or a camel ot a horse, these heavy bars will not save your car.
Hand winch is ok... but we were driving by our selves and were bogged once a month... and had to dig out with a shovel many times. Doable, but slow. A lightweight electric winch might be the go, and I have used portable rechargeable riggers winches that work - there are now being used everywhere in rigging and the SES train using them for lifting patients back up cliff faces. Do not fit heavy suff to the front of your car.
2nd battery under the bonnet ? Why ? I have 2 rechargeable jumpstart packs that work perfectly. Why would I go and stick another 40kg under the bonnet ? Nuts. Build lightness.
We have gone all electric now and thus do not carry a gas bottle inside the car like most people do. All electric is simple and works perfectly. Total weight of the all electric is less then half the weight of the seats we removed.
And... why are people fitting permanent awnings to their cars ? Most of them are tiny, and they do not keep the storm of your swag anyhow. Figure out how to easily rig up a 4x5m tap.
The Troopy is an awesome spacious wagon, that is a perfect size for bush travelling.
We got away with a LSD rear and a locked centre, but lockers is a good idea, but personally I am fan of truetracks front and rear.
@@nordic5490 excellent. We speak from experience, not listening to some beard strokers around a camp fire.
I was a mining engineer from my 20s and for many long years drove a lot of no track exploration Landcruisers and hiluxes and finding paths for drill rigs to come in in centre of Aus.
People have been sold the image by companies of what you should have on your 4x4. Most have ended up pigs in mud weighing in over 3 tons and above gvm in many cases. But that’s the maximum. Light is amazing. Same landcruiser at 2t vs 3t is like a different vehicle.
But people like to buy shit they don’t need, with money they don’t have, to impress people they don’t like. So their 4x4s end up looking like wanking chariots without any sign of actual off road use. My neighbour has a newish Hilux without a scratch on it and he drives it in a suit. I guess he thinks he is portraying the virile young man but is actually close to 60.
I also use my landcruiser 80 in snow, minimum shit in it. I take out even back seats so I can sleep in the back. You have a great point there. Why are people carrying giant rtt or swags when they have a metal shelter in back of landcruiser? Because they fill it with useless crap, including the swag. I use a hiking sleeping mat and feather bag and have an emergency hiking tent and tarp. Water is the heaviest thing I carry in the car.
I guess the majority of people watching this channel couldn’t four wheel drive across a football field. The industry sees them as cash cow, working long hours imstead of doing a bit of travelling in their chariots
@@superwag634 amen to that.
My son just bought a V8 2024 76 in the blue. He getting 1980s retro stickers. he is 26 years of age. I asked him why the v8. He said “it wont lose money. In fact it will be worth more and the 2.8 has to proove itself in terms of reliability”
As a finance guru, I’d tell your son that he will definitely lose money through something known as “opportunity cost”. And then more than double that loss if the car is financed, which is likely since most 26 year olds don’t have a 100k in cash to drop on a car.
Twenty years from now, he’ll be wondering what happened to his money, and the answer will be Landcruiser. But hopefully he will gain a lot of experiences which are actually priceless. If, and it’s a big if nowadays, he has the time to actually use the landcruiser on long remote trips and not just drive in suburbia 🤷♂️
Your son has done zero research then. The 2.8 has proved itself, in this platform and the hilux and prado.
As for future value, you can already see the prices on the v8 models falling, because people have realised you buy the 2.8 and don't have to do any engine mods, because it's twice as powerful and way more economical than the v8.
The ONLY argument the v8 has for it is the sound, it loses the argument everywhere else
Bingo @@dh2919
Can't believe anyone is actually buying new troopys considering how expensive and under equipped they are
Can’t wait to buy a patrol rd28t said no one ever.. that’s how I see these .. 10 years time these will be 25 k v8 S will still be getting 60k
I love the Troopy. At $40,000 AUD it would be a great truck, but still overpriced. At it's current price point, I would rather buy a Prado, and live with scratching it. The fact that the Troopy at this price doesn't come standard with a full-time 4wd system is ridiculous. The fact the the axels are still out of square is a joke. As much as I love the look and the practicality of them, I would definitely chose the new Prado and deal with the scratches. And if I wanted to save money, just buy an older 100 series.
And if you are only over-landing, I think you are better off with an IFS front end rather than solid axels.
I'm a Massive land Rover fan and have my own reasonably modded defender. Would love if you could do any videos on land rovers of any form. One of your fans from Ireland 🇮🇪
I am saving up to wrap my black Tacoma Sandy Taupe.
AWESOME , Another Build !, this is gonna be Great...
Another good video mate. Experience is showing through more and more. “Less is more” 👌
Look at Andrew St Pierre Whites troopy builds there are some good ideas.Because he does a lot of photography stuff there are some applicable ideas.I reckon he should have bought the cheapest prado and taken the rear seats out.
Looking forward to this build
Why not use spacers on the rear axle if the vehicle is kept light and basically stock it won't wear out the bearings any faster?
Get the seats resculpted by a decent upholsterer, I did with an SR5 Hilux. Extended squab to fit under knees better, added air adjustable lumbar support and the SR5 seats are now much better.
Those +50 rims are a bad bbbbbbbbbbad idea, wheel bearings will let you down just when you dont want, especially fully loaded. Maybe renew bearings every 50k and probably ok. But then again the diff housings will also possibly break, they 'do' break and the +50 rims will add so much more load.
Great vid to show the planning process
Fill the back up with milwaukee packout 😮
Cool idea to show a budget but pre planned build
Looking forward to seeing this one play out, boys!
Troopy myself, V8. Whack a set of KONI HEAVY TRACK (or Raid) shocks on. They are good. Just got back from the south half of the CSR and the corrugations tested them out and they passed. 245 - 75 Coopers AT, -25 offset because of the Toyota dickhead thing , Rear flares because dick heads. I sleep in a bunk, driver side. Engle 39L dule zone behind passenger seat, access from passenger side. Run Expedition 134 tubs under bunk for gear x 3. Water tank, 55lt under rear. 270 awning passenger and shower tent on driver side. Works great and goes anywhere light as a feather. Also got a tune... 13-14ltr/100km. It'll be great to see how he sets his one up! They are all personal.
Awesome, we just got ours recently and like to do the same.if you could put some links of tge products that would be fantastic! Which roof rack did he installed? Many thanks and Awesome channel!
Definitely a interesting build
Ronny, can you make a video about 4wd insurance, what they cover and your best options?
Great video Ron.
Great vids Ronny. Kia Ora! Pick up my new 76 next week and over here in NZ my wife found a track correction bit of kit the I was wondering if you had come across them previously or something similar. The are from a New Plymouth/ Taranaki company called Trundles Automotive and they call the kit track correction hubs. Would appreciate your comments. Brian and Jeni
Where can we watch that video of the prado/79 getting stuck! Thanks!
I have my doubts about that colour and paint job though…hopefully some protection.
Australia is such a funny place isn’t?
255/85R18 … the ultimate troopy tyre!
Another great video. Keep them coming.
Not sure about no winch when you recommend rock sliders!
Mate I’ve come to conclusion you love the Landcruisers. Which is great . But why not the Grenadier? You gone deep on the Toyota but what happened to the Grenadier? Did you have to give it back or don’t you like it?
Question - Why do you prefer Prado VX over Kakadu with KDSS?
What are you going to drive the CSR in? 76 or Grenadier?
G'day Rohny, I love the vids but am interested in what's going on with the ineos? Is the lack of content on it a bad sign.
Have you ever had any heating issues with how many bugs that get into the radiator over time when driving up north?
What a sad world when $50k is thought to be a low budget build. No winch , no rear bar, no lift and maybe no new duspension and still 50k, where is it going?
He’s not doing diy, paying top dollar to get someone else to do the work
Build not bought is how I operate
I was thinking the same thing! but then I realized he's getting everything built ( Not a dig at him). If you DIY everything, you can have a fully built quality rig with an alu-cab and all the upgrades you can think off (lockers, bigger tires, winch, bull bars, lift etc.) for the same cost.
There's a couple on YT who spent $41,000 for a fully built Defender 110 with Alu-cab because they did everything themselves.
@@Ghanim.M built my own boat, Now building a house, do everything myself (except plumbing and electrical) should save $150k
Monetise your skills 😀
@michaelhermans4753 That's amazing man! Sometimes professionals make you think you need to be an expert to build a home. With a little bit of knowledge (RUclips university for the win), anyone can build a small house/cabin and with the experience gained, you can build a bigger home! It's all just wood and nails and a few tools!
He lives in WA with mostly sandy flat terrain. A rear bar would see very little (if any) use. A and winch is optional, but much faster than digging or a handwinch. If you are not towing a trailer, a winch will be used rarely. I have used portable rechargeable rigging winches - as used by the SES for to recover fallen persons back up cliff faces.
Build lightness. Adding winch, heavy steel roo bar, 2nd battery under the bonnet, etc, is very foolish in 2024. Build lighness.
I was a surveyor all over the NT for several years, in all seasons, and drove some pretty terrible tracks inc blacksoil plains.
Is Torbs joining you on the CSR as originally mentioned?
So are you doing the Canning in the 76 and the Grenadier?
Bro AU is spoiled.
They get to have F250s 2500s and they get to have these hot Toyota pickups and suvs that many of us can only dream about.
Definitely disappointing when self called 4wd build experts recommend illegal offset rear wheels to fix a track issue. With a vehicle that’ll be worth $150k+, while it might never be an issue, you’re still opening the door for insurance to refuse (or make it difficult) to payout a future claim. Just having a Quick Look around and they’re cheaper, LEGAL options from Tru Tracker, Buds Customs, Superior, Jmacx and Dwiz, some for well under $10k plus some of them also fix other suspension hanger issues. Also making it easier to rotate your $600+ tyres. Also amusing when you’ll argue you have to stick to your $50k budget but you’ll also do the ring around and demand companies give you free things for the build if they want a mention to advertise their products during this build, like you did in Project Prado (and probably other builds.
Im not from Australia, but what makes putting lower offset rear wheels illegal? Many sports cars come like that from factory.
Why didn't you buy a Grenadier, classic antipodean love of the cruiser, with the many blinkered compromises you face.
Chris... reserve some money for a Pull-Pal and save the gang.
Just out of interest how long did he wait for this? I ordered one early Feb and still haven’t heard anything
Troop life, you start with an expensive and very basic wagon shell, spend double or more, and end up with an awsome Outback tourer. Little 4cyl is not for me, pitty they didn't fit the 3.3v6 for what they are asking.
Sadly we don't even have access to this type of Toyota in the US...the base LC in the US is the Land Cruiser 1958. At 57k it's hardly entry level pricing but that's all we get here...
These landcruisers in Aus are like $90,000 Australian or about US$60k
A single cab and canopy should have been his choice
Sorry Ronny but winch I disagree with your decision, its good insurance and I've already used mine quite a few times.
Hell you'd could get a cheap Ridge Ryder one from Supercheap Auto, they go great for the price.
Mate what are your thoughts on the new one Land Cruiser 250
Imagine how many people would buy any of the 70 series landcruzers if they were priced $30000 cheaper
Where’s the Grenadier?
ARE YOU SHITTING ME???? How do you get these vehicles in AU, I want them in Norway! We´ve got more money and more oil! You make more kids, but that just tells me that you´re just effing around!
😄
Not too hard to get them, just go to your local Toyota dealer and order one 😂😂, I have a dealer no more than 5 min from me, I can order you one, you can come by and pick it up 🤣🤣
Your government only wants you to have EV.😮
It's really easy. You can get a Troopy within a year normally. New Prado is about 2 years wait at moment. RAV used to be 3 years waiting. Toyota is testing Australian's patience.
You can dream of a Toyota, I'll keep effing around whilst you wait.
I'm always in the best scenario, laid frequently (I wish) whilst you dream if a shit useless vehicle, best swap your dream scenario around I'd suggest, hope to be efted frequently. Haha 😂😂
What year is this Troopy?
