My favorite was the one that had alot of juvenile wood and the brown weaved back and forth. Some people think walnut should be all brown, but I like contrast.
You don’t mess around! I approve of the power washer treatment on the slabs! Those book-matched sets blew my mind. I second the vacuum kiln idea. Matt Cremona just showed vacuum kiln drying 4-inch thick workbench tops in something like 14 days…dead straight and all. I imagine it would be worth it for these slabs.
Match booking is the way to go when you don't have a slabbing mill, especially for black walnut. Those had crazy, beautiful figure in them. A table for sure, but maybe you should consult the rooster before making any brash decisions! Great video, as always.
Walnut, even crappy walnut is still the most beautiful lumber out there. Your slabs are stunning and I wish I lived on the West Coast so I could buy some of them from you! They are clearly....rooster approved & worth crowing about;-)
I have said it before I'll say it again nothing else says character like black walnut. Love the grain hands down my favorite wood to work with. As always good luck and God Bless.
The matched set on the left at 17:00 is SMILING. lol I'd mount those on my wall. The set on the right(middle of 3 sets) would make a cool bar top and the far right set as a dining table. BEAUTIFUL!
Hi Jason, Man, they are some beautiful slabs. I can imagine the furniture you're going to produce. A dehumidifier in the shipping container sounds like a great idea. You can rig up some piping to get the water to the outside. You and your family stay safe.
The two pieces that are 'egged' shaped (book matched) remind me of a turtle. The two that the heart wood separates, look like dancing ladies. BTW - Trailer bearings replaced. A new rim and tire are on order. I should be able to start my patio project next week. Thanks again.
Those English walnut book matched pieces look amazing! Black walnut is beautiful but that English walnut WOW. And obviously your roster thinks so too haha.
Hi Jason... really great to see videos from you more often.!! A friend of mine made a low-tech kiln with a shipping container.... he cut holes in the bottom (sides) and tops.... put some screening on to keep the animals out.... and let convection do the rest..... works great for him.
Well look at that, I've finally caught up. This is such a fantastic channel. This walnut is amazing. Its beautiful. I especially like the mirror image ones you have placed side by side. Have truly enjoyed every video. Congratulations on your career change & I look forward to future videos.
Still LOVE that leaf blower. Magnitude past the drywall knife technique. Yup the black walnut has its own unique smell. Work with it all the time. Walnut cabinets, desks, headboards, pistol cases. Fun wood, glad you are experiencing the wood. Try epoxy coating some, deep color in the wood. Looking forward to your projects on the channel!
I have one black walnut tree in my log yard .can't wait to see what it looks like. That stuff you have is truly beautiful. Good work on which way to cut.just stunning.the rooster has not retired hey.
I’ve always thought of walnut sap wood as a type of defect but those slabs really show how beautiful the contrast can be. The sections that look like stretched animal pelts are amazing.
Those are gorgeous. I would feel pressure to come up with the best possible use for them. I think a bookcase with the one set of matching pieces as the sides. Thanks for sharing.
I have some Amish made walnut live edge top tables in my living room, but here in Michigan it's a different kind of walnut, and definitely does not look like that. I wish it did
Epic is certainly an apt choice for description for those booked match walnut slabs. I can only hope that they stay flat when dried since they came from the limbs of the tree (lots of tension in those typically.)
Wow! just Wow! Jason those are amazing. I guess it’s time for you to get that wood Mizer slab flattener, the CNC one Lol. Otherwise It might take you a while with your new Festool.
I actually bought a pretty fancy router bit with replaceable cutting heads for flattening slabs. That Wood-Mizer unit is over $15k and requires someone to stand there and run it. You could get a pretty nice CNC router for that price and not have to stand there the whole time.
@@NorthwestSawyer Walnut sounds a little warmer than Maple (Maple is bright sounding), but also a bit more "dead" sounding. I just especially ike the way Walnut looks on a guitar top.

Dude....cool Walnut, Bro!!! Seriously. Absolutely b-e-a-utiful! That would be cool to have a speedier drying process. I've watched a couple of videos in the past that showed a wooden box with a glass top and fan. Seemed pretty cool. Good luck.
Those are stunning slabs, makes me drool. Only thing I would do different, larger limb I would have slabbed out at 6/4. Tables, maybe a china hutch with the smaller limb cuts.
Wow they are stunning I would love one the book ones for table and 1 or 2 the slabs for a bench if did that you could easily sell ut for £1000 /$1000 plus
I'm sure you been asked before but, in your intro, when you get hit in the head with the board you were "nailing" into the side of that building, was that because you ran out of nails and didn't realize it? Non-woodworker / contractor here, so I don't really know what's was going on (I can't even hammer a nail in straight.) Thank you for the great compliment! That scene was from another video. I was actually removing that board. I didn’t realize that I had pulled the last screw out already and when I looked down, the board fell and hit me. I don’t edit those things out like a lot of others do to show the failures as well as the successes.
Amazing wood, Jason. Is there a vacuum kiln around somewhere near you to speed up the drying? Then we can see you working on them sooner. I hope retirement is going well. Bill
Hey . I was watching one of your videos from 2018 , you were cutting lap siding ,.do you sticker them like any other boards or does the taper warp when drying
I still have those boards as a matter of fact. I didn’t sticker them and they didn’t warp. Doing it again I think I would saw them a little thicker. The taper was pretty thin once they dried.
