- Hey there guys and welcome to Subsistence. Reading a bunch of reviews shows some players struggle to get started, so I have created this survival guide packed with hints and tips in surviving the first few days and getting set up.
Subsistence game info:
"Subsistence is a sandbox, first person, solo or co-op, PvE open-world survival game. Struggle to build a base and gear-up in the hostile environment. Defend yourself from wildlife and AI hunters (who also build bases in the world). Progress your base technology for advanced item crafting and upgrades. Farm crops, raise small animals and harvest and refine resources to rise in dominance in the world. If you enjoy open-world sandbox survival games, resource gathering and grinding to build a base, you may enjoy playing the early access version of the game.

walking may save some food, but walking means you search less in a day hence get less food, resources etc. If you run and when your stamina starts dropping just stop and cut some trees until it builds again
Interesting point, however by running around you burn stamina which also increases hunger, rebuilding stamina again increases hunger. So potentially by moving quickly you need more food and water than walking.
@@SimpleSimonSS You also expand your stamina and health by running around a lot without dying
just bought the game.....thought it had a rust feel to it....6/10....resources are as scarce as hen teeth....for ever starving and getting blocked by bears and dogs

This game seems pretty fun & neat looking! I would just like to see more food in this game. That could make it easier to stay alive. If there were some fruit trees, Could be a nice add to the game. Ever played Rising world ?
There are fruits found in containers, fish that you can catch in lakes and meat which you can of course get from hunting animals. You can grow carrots and tomatoes in plant beds when you find seeds. So there is actually a variety of food types 😉

Amos Fricker I think there is enough variety in veg, but I think ColdGame needs to add a way to preserve meat so it lasts longer, maybe drying it, or adding salt as another ore node, and added salted meat. The fridge allows for storing it indefinitely in your base, but I’m thinking of something you can carry with you, without worrying about it spoiling by nightfall.
He could balance it out by having it make you thirsty and even reduce the amount protein & hunger points you get from it, but it would still be worth having a few on you for longer loot and cave runs. Although he could get much the same effect by increasing the spoil time on meals cooked on the stove to a game day or day and a half
I don't know why, but they removed the pistol and matches from the starting gear. But 9mm doesn't kill a chicken? Seriously? That's ridiculous.

When you drink from the canteen you have to drink it all at once then refill the bottle. That's so stupid and unrealistic. It's Always Taught to Ration water in small sips.
Ive owned this game for over a year now. I played it once and i never played it again. It looks a little more meaty now and this convinced me to reinstall it. Great video man keep the vids coming!
+seth riley thank you. I have been pleased with how the dev has been very responsive to the community feedback and continued to develop the game. The idea of having not just ai in game, but them building bases is unique, I look forward to him maturing the game to its full potential.
Fibers are hard to come by. The dev need to fix that, and need to make it simpler. It just doesn’t give me any enjoyable much.

I've been wanting to grab this game, but I can't get over how dumb the tree cutting is. The forest was amazing, because chopping trees in there was satisfying. This is the worst I've seen so far in any game
Chopping trees in this game is at its basic level, but that is not the focus. The ai hunters and their ability to build their own bases, navigate the map, and coordinate attacks on the player is this games focus.
Watered down Rust with NPC's. Which I'm all for. Except the trees is so borderline dumb that it's keeping me from buying it

I just started playing this a week or two ago, I decided to kill a moose near my base, since I needed more sinew, but when the moose came after me it dragged a grizzly with it, and between them they killed me. My corpse ended up impaled and dangling from his antlers, and it shook it’s head to toss me off. Dying was a PITA but it was worth it to see that animation. 😂

Simple Simon yeah, Most definitely, I’m absolutely loving this game. I had overlooked it for years, largely I think because the low price of it made me assume it was just another crappy shallow cash grab, but it’s as far from that as a game can be. I’m amazed that this is made by a single developer.
Simple Simon btw, I’ve got a question, if you build your base on the side of a rock or cliff, will the hunters attack it from the top of the rock/cliff?
@@johnpatz8395 in my experience they can still attack from all directions, you will still be vulnerable on the land side. But depending how high you are they can attack from a lower level, they just won't be able to reach your base unless they navigate around.
I tend to build on cliff edges to make it harder for them and give me an vantage point over them.
Another tip, never build over the middle of a lake. I did that once, the hunters swam out to me and attacked, destroying my foundations and stuff. You can imagine how bad that is when suspended over water.
@@SimpleSimonSS Thanks for the information. I was thinking I'd put my next base against a rockface, but it will be a bit before I get upper floors that overlook the rock and I didn't want grenades raining down on my first floor before I could build the upper level
I just discovered this game and am not use to mouse and keyboard. The only thing I am having an issue with is using the ax. I tap the use button but nothing happens. I looked at controls and don't see anything that would be any different. I pressed every button and still nothing.
You need to use your left mouse button to swing the axe. Hope this helps 😀
@@SimpleSimonSS Thanks, I actually figured it out a few minutes after I commented. It was actually the F key for "fire" that I had to use. I did change it to the left mouse button to make it easier. It is so intense 😳 I almost died day one. Good thing I watched your video.

Is there some other way to get food without bow and arrows? Its fckicg hard to shoot those small animals.
You can use guns. Or craft a fishing rod, plus the tackle with bait and fish for food.
Make sure the tip of the arrow is slightly above the rabbit or chicken before you fire it. Arrows fall slightly due to gravity so you want to aim slightly higher.
Just found this game and am loving it! I'm several days in. Almost starved to death, but got saved by fishing and gathering kelp. And kind of half cheated by killing a wolf and a bear from within my half built base. They couldn't get to me so it was safe while I put arrows into them.
I did easy with no hunters since I want to play with the crafting for now, and it's still hard! But I love the challenge and that it doesn't baby you along even on easy. Love this game!!
Awesome! I don't know if you noticed the wolf behaviour, but when your at your base the wolves usually back off. Bears usually continue to attack briefly before losing interest.

@@SimpleSimonSS yeup. Well, what I did was I opened my door and shot it. It took off, but when I stepped out onto the stairs, it came back at me. Kept putting shots into it, then it got stuck on the backside of my stairs. I think I lucked out there more than anything. Then killed it. Mmmm wolf steak. Lol
For the bear, I was on the open side of my base that didn't have walls. It was over a 8 footish rock wall/outcropping. Shot the bear and it came at me, but couldn't get me because I was too high and kind of got stuck on the rocks. It did get one hit on my floor before I killed it, but came out fine. LOADS of fat there.

I’ve just started this game and was looking for a beginners guide and this came up, its a great help but I still don’t know how your suppose to to place your foundations? When I try it to place it all it does is drop it?
You need to put the crafted item onto your tool belt, then place using the left mouse button.
Put it in your toolbar, select it with the number key that corresponds with the toolbar box it is in. It will show up on the screen as a blue hologram. Adjust the hologram to how you like it and then left click to confirm placement.
Love this game it's for low end pc

Yeah I am setting a goal to not give up on Hardcore. If I game has it, I play it. Makes me really immerse myself and try and do my best everytime!

whats interesting to me is i didnt start with the pistol nor the match, the animals attacked from FAR closer than they do you and there was a shit ton more animals on my world than yours, sadly i didnt find a protein bar so didnt have enough food to survive the night and died, my second playthrough my foundation and box was killed by a lvl 5 black bear then the third playthrough hunters ripped in down with shotguns before i had a a pistol seems like a totally different game now....
Hmmmmm interesting, think I may have to revisit again to see if the difficulty has changed at all 😳
@@SimpleSimonSS i know im shit at the game but when watching i was constantly thinking why the hell are they not spitroasting him right now, and i just discovered apparently s/p start with a pistol but no match, multiplayer you get only glowstick and axe
Ah ok, I see now. I haven't played multiplayer, so I can't comment on that mode.
@@SimpleSimonSS I assumed it would be the same but with more players but it seems alot harder to survive we play hardcore and it's not going well lol

You'll learn to keep your distance, once you hear the growl back away. They won't attack unless you get close to them.
die a lot and on purpose . have a storage crate and a fire pit , put your pants in the crate every time and shred them for cloth so you can have some warmer gear . in the fire pit store 3 canteens . on the run back to your base you dont usually die so use it to grab tons of bags and fibers as you run ,so do not build a bed too quickly . that said i had set it to hunters never attack and i get grenaded and shot at in and out of base wtf?
Hunters not attacking means they won't actively hunt you down and attack, it does not stop them attacking you if you are close to them 😉
strange . thank you for letting me know that . my first winter i got blasted in the face with a shotgun by some guy in a christmas sweater i was so pissed. moreso as he had a nice sweater.

what settings do you play on, in order to see the loot so well? and for optimization
I don't have it configured in anyway to highlight loot, I just have the game set at the highest graphics setting available.

How long do you have to wait to play the game when it becomes night? I started for my first time and in like 30 minutes it was already dark and you can't see squat.
That all depends on how you have configured it, you can change the day to night length in the settings of the saved profile.
@@SimpleSimonSS Having a very hard time making a campfire.I can craft it but it sits on far right where axe,gun, and glow stick sits.I cannot activate it with the left mouse button.I cant even scroll to it.How do you do it?
I have it on my tool belt and then just press whatever number it is on. So if it's on the first slot I would press 1 on the keyboard.

The game has had numerous updates since this video which have added and tweaked some features. The principal is pretty much the same though.

Unfortunately it was not getting a lot of interest. Think partly because the game is mostly grinding (looting and chopping trees) which makes it very slow paced. If there is enough interest I would like to do a new series on it. I am considering doing a second part to this video as it has generated interest and feedback has shown viewers find it helpful, so watch this space as I will look into the more advanced crafting and survival aspects of the game :)
