  • Filmed in the late 1950s and early 60s, this silent section of clips illustrates some examples of early British Diesel locomotives. Starting in North London, the extracts then include Crewe station, the old Birmingham New Street before finally moving to Derby locomotive works.

    Wonderful! the early North London stuff particularly and was when people rarely took pictures of diesels, making this priceless. What it lacks in picture quality and sound is made up for by the atmosphere of those early Modernisation Plan days.

      Have you tried to understand how the Fell worked?
      Wikipedia is a good place to start.

    There was some rare finds in this clip. Especially the Class D16/2 which is the first time i have ever seen such a type book or film.

    I can remember these great locomotive s as I watched the end of steam and still the big 4 carriage s great memories both of my grandparents dad's worked on the railway and followed in there foot steps working at lime street Liverpool

    ❤ Wonderful, around the time I was born. I only saw them in predominately BR blue in the early 70s. Plenty of Green ones around then though, but i've never seen any without the yellow front warning panel. They look quite dower but fab all the same. Never heard of the fell diesel so I'm definitely gonna have to look that one up.

    That's fantastic. I'm fascinated by the innovation that happened back then.
    What is K201 at 1:26?

      It's not K201, but 10201 with half of the first zero hidden by the cab handrail -- took me ages to figure out that one little detail. 10201-10203 were Bulleid-designed 1Co-Co1s that were ordered by the Southern Railway and delivered to British Railways as class D16/2. Despite being a Southern design, they spent quite a lot of the 1950s running out of London Euston, including return passenger trains to Liverpool.

    Is that a D16/2 at 1:23? Im fairly sure it is, and I can find references to them working out of London Euston, despite being a Southern Railway design. But they were numbered 10201-10203 and I can't find any reference to number 10201 running as K201.
    Edit: Ohhhhh, it's not "K201" -- it's "10201" with the right-hand side of the first zero obscured by the cab handrail. :facepalm:

    I rember the early days of new edibles and how amazing they were after steam I was blown away I loved the western my fav just brute power sadly the new diesel s yawn but it's nice to see classic diesel pulling the new ones as they have broken I rember the MK1 having steam heat is was amazing wen I asked a driver how it's was done in the winter 1963 going to south Devon to see my grandad at kings weir station no stopping at Paignton all the way to kingswheier and yes snow in the English Rivera

      Looked like it. Warships had regular workings into Crewe for a time on through services from the Western Region via Shrewsbury.
