One of the biggest mistakes I made last year was not being preventative with pests. This year I have a plan to spray my organic garlic bug deterrent often. I'm also doing a lot of companion planting.

Before applying any pest control - I'd recommend to first amend your soil with plenty of organic compost before the season, also try to ensure the plants are not stressed (if starting with transplants, make sure they are not root bound, hardened off properly etc.) - reason being there is a thought (and what I have experienced) is that plants that are healthy will not be affected by bugs or disease.
