I think that part of the attraction of hydrophobic side chains is caused by weak IMFs known as LDFs (or van der waals interactions). The hydrophobic interaction also involves pushing water out from the center of that protein as hydrophobic side chains don't favorably interact with water. At least that is how I understood it. :)
