    Funny thing is that gamepass numbers are more scuffed than the PlayStation plus numbers. Because gamepass changed their xbox live model into a gamepass core. So everyone who had xbox live is now technically a "gamepass member." That explains why the gamepass member count jumped from 25 to 34 mill in just a year. I also found this quote from an article I found showing xbox gamepass lost members.
    "From there it doesn’t take long to figure out the math. 25 million Game Pass subs back in 2022, added to the reported 11.7 million Xbox Live Gold (now Game Pass Core), makes almost 37 million total. That’s approx. 8% difference, which - assuming there’s nothing behind the scenes that accounts for it - means that Xbox Game Pass has lost almost 3 million subscribers since 2022."
    Meaning that gamepass is declining.

    • @robertolbert3585
      @robertolbert3585 18 дней назад +8

      also, Game pass is Core (6.99€) + Game pass console (9.99€) + PC Game pass(9.99€) + Gamepass Ultimate(14.99€). We do not know how much is actually Ultimate subscribers and how does it complare to PS plus structure. It makes more sense to simply compare the sum. 34 mil. vs 47 mil. There might be less Ultimate subscribers as PS plus premium subscribers or less PC game pass subscribers as PS plus Extra subscribers. Just saying

      Realistically, even if it was 20 for normal GP a month, and $30-35 for ultimate a month. It's still worth it in the yr over yr or even on a month to month basis.
      People seem to forget games cost $75 a pop now a days or even $40 for half decent good indie titles. What would you rather do? Spend 20-35 a month to try it out and several hundred titles you may never buy but curious about or buy every game and regret it because it's a shit game?
      Clearly if you have kids it's new to them so it's good for a family situation.

    The thing that people miss is how much unaffordable cloud gaming is for majority of the world. Most third world nations do not provide unlimited data. Streaming COD for 4hrs at max performance might be all it takes to exhaust a months worth of data. Simply put, even if the software ever gets there, Cloud gaming will basically only be restricted to first world nations

    • @plantex625
      @plantex625 18 дней назад +20

      This is interesting, I never thought of that. So basically what youre saying is: Cloud gaming requires unlimited data --> only relatively wealthy people have unlimited data --> cloud data is only accessible to the relatively wealthy but they can afford hardware so they dont need it --> cloud gaming will not open any new markets?

    • @insanittiez4860
      @insanittiez4860 18 дней назад

      @@plantex625 It may open new markets but I think Asmon, by not knowing the data costs, doesn’t include that in his predictions. The reason why disk games are still popular in 3rd world nations is because of data speeds and data in general. I grew up in Cameroon and it’s so bad, it could take most of your day just to download a movie. Even when I went to visit, I was constantly paying an astronomical amount just to add data so I can watch RUclips for most of the day. The amount I spend on unlimited here was only enough to barely cover 2 weeks and that’s with me using my rich American money. Look at the minimum wage in these countries and you will find out how unaffordable it is to constantly pay for those high data rates.

    • @steveiguana6887
      @steveiguana6887 18 дней назад +6

      That isn't solely a problem in 3rd world nations. Some ISPs in the US have monthly bandwidth caps (ex. Xfinity). Not to mention, there are many places in the US that don't have fast internet. The legal definition of high speed internet in the US is only 25mbps, which isn't that much. If you want good latency and performance from streaming games in the cloud, you might be hard pressed finding that speedy fiber optic connection outside of large metro areas.

      This is where they make most their money sooooo I don't think they are worried about unlimited 5g/5g+/6g and wifi 6-7. It's just if enough can convert in the next 5+ years. Many other countries even less profitable are also investing into cloud based gaming that we never heard of that Microsoft teamed with. It doesn't have to be competitive just playable.
      Playstation blocked 200 countries from helldivers 2 without a care. No gain for them due to wealth, regulations, or population. Even their new game launching on steam is the exact same.

      @@proudofyourroots9575 single mode, glass optical fibre, which afaik is the industry standard for medium to long range connections, adds about 1 milisecond of latency per 200 kilometres. add on a few miliseconds for routing and optical modem overhead, then, unless you live literally thousands of kilometres from the nearest datacentre with these cloud gaming machines, the added latency should be 30 miliseconds or less. for multiplayer games, some of this latency can be recouped by colocating the cloud gaming machines with the game servers, thereby reducing client-server latency to single-digit miliseconds, compared to ~30ms for regular users living within reasonable distance to those game servers.
      the speed of light is not the problem. the real issues for cloud gaming imo are bandwidth, data caps and economics. geforce now, for example, recommends a bandwidth of 50 Mb/s for 1080p60 on their service (although ofc they use variable bitrate encoding for tolerance), that can already be a tall ask for many people, especially in developing countries (south america, india, etc., as asmon mentioned). assuming you do have that bandwidth reliably and that it *does* actually use all 50 Mb/s for streaming the game, that would use up ~22 *Gigabytes* of data for an hour of gaming. many people (again, especially in developing countries) have data caps on their internet, often in the houndreds of gigabytes per month, which this would easily chew through in a matter of days. this would make it an extreme non-starter for many, unless microsoft/xbox negotiate exceptions with their isps. then there's the economics: building up cloud-gaming capacity is a big capital risk, plus the cost of electricity, the cost of data on their end, plus maintenance and management, hardware depreciation, and all that on top of their current capital risk of putting games on game pass AND the inevitable desire for higher profit margins (otherwise why bother with all of this?). somehow all of this has to be priced competetively versus buying a console/pc outright, which i don't see happening right now.

I know someone who always buys Ubisoft games at release, but has finally decided to stop recently because she knows it'll just go on a 50% discount 3 months later anyway, with bugfixes, performance improvements and QoL updates as an added bonus, so what's the point in buying it on release?
      That's one of the reasons why Nintendo games sell so well - there's no hesitancy waiting for a better deal, because the best you'll get is 30% off, years down the line, and the games generally release in a pretty finished state. Meanwhile on the same platform you look at Mario vs Rabbids Sparks of Hope (from Ubisoft again, funny how that works, huh?) which everyone saw and went "looks nice - I'll grab it when the gold edition is like $15, like I did with the first game", and then the game didn't sell well at release at all

They found out that the price to keep content on the service outweighed subscriptions so they had to do things like raise prices (Netflix costs almost 3 times as much as it did 10 years ago to get essentially the same level of service) or add ads to subsidize those costs. Expect Microsoft to continue to boost the cost of Game Pass over time until it becomes untenable as a monthly service. I have a feeling the breaking point will be $25 USD/month.

    Nintendo does still make a “Game Boy,” it’s called the Switch, and it’s one of the best selling systems ever made.
    Microsoft’s big move for Game Pass is going to be getting it on the other consoles. They want Game Pass on everything. Anything that can have Game Pass is a place they want it to be. But at the moment the biggest untapped markets for them would be PlayStation and Switch. I wouldn’t be surprised if Game Pass shows up on Switch 2 when that comes out in what sounds like it could be the very near future.
    I don’t see consoles going away anytime soon. Not until there’s a cheaper option...which the PC isn’t. Like the moment something like Game Pass just works on your television, or works on something like a Roku, that’ll be the end of “consoles” most likely. But that isn’t happening for a while. Even if consoles have just one more generation after this one that’s still another decade. Thing is America’s Internet infrastructure is garbage, so streaming games here as some king of massive business is kind of off the table for now. Like if these companies really want to get into streaming gaming here they’re going to need to build the infrastructure for it across America first.

    The sad fact consoles now are just computers with custom os. The problem with that is a computer can do everything a console can do for maybe alittle extra or double the price and currently be way better graphic wise.

    With the Microsoft situation going on right now, I wanna say for GamePass and game preservation/supporting game developers from my perspective is that it’s a mixed bag. I like the notion that it’s like Blockbuster (man I’m old) and that I can rent a game, play it, if I like it I could buy the actual game or something for if I don’t like it, I can simply uninstall it without buyer’s remorse.
    There are so many good games that I’ve played like Double Fine products (Grim Fandango, Psychonauts), Vampire Survivors, Age of Empires, etc. But when it comes to games that I want to preserve physically or want to keep, I’ll buy it physical like Jedi Survivor, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Armored Core VI. I think it’s a good idea that these huge games should not come to GamePass because it actually supports the developers. Also yes I may own a few digital games online with Elden Ring and all but that’s because I’m lazy lol.

      Same, even if lets say microsofts cut was 2bucks, rest goes split between developers of games played by the user based on playtime, for ease lets count sub cost at 20usd, -2bucks for microsoft, so 18usd left for devs. Lets say You release a big title, 70usd on steam. User would have to exclusively play one game for over 3months to come near the store-cost, and its also split into 3 separate monthly payments with no interest. And a quarter of a year is hella long time, even for casual gamers who play like 5hours per week. And if the game is actually great, and that same casual gamer stretches his weekly play time to 10hours, its only worse for you, because you potentially loose that 3rd payment. Only way for them to make any profit is gamepass-subsidized studios in-house focusing on games just for that, since their costs are calculated into overall revenue. Only viable thing I'd see would be adding it to gamepass after at least 6months of the game being out to supplement revenue while working on expansion/dlc or a new game..

      Save console? Xbox consoles sales never sold well, it never was a priority. They always aimed to go full digital with game pass in many platforms as possible and now they are doing that.
      The game pass is their holy grail, their main focus, consoles sales are secondary because, well, Microsoft as a trillion dollar company can afford to do that.
      It always have been like that in the last years, they were preparing for going full digital and multiplatform and they are finally doing it.
      Sony is also following the same path with their exclusives releasing on PC digitally.

    As a South-American local there's one thing to say about cloud gaming: It's an awful idea.
    Not only hardware is difficult to buy, our internet services are utter crap and extra latency is something that not a single gamer wants, mostly on multiplayer games.

    Gamepass is a ridiculously good value right now. It's like the early days of Netflix before all the publishers pulled their content for their own subscription. Get in while the getting's good, and cancel once Xbox fuxks it up.

      You can play all the new ea games. Madden, fifa, NBA 2k, ncaa football, forza, all Bethesda games all for 120 a year and access to thousands of other titles. Some come and go but they let you know way ahead of time so just play it before it's replaced.

    People don't get that MS goes the Disney way of buying IP to sell Merchandise, Movies, Shows and what not. Fallout and Halo are a great example for that. They want that sweet Star Wars money, not that poor gamer money.

    Shameless console hater Asmongold thumbs up anti-game ownership GamePass and predicts the death of consoles. Valve's failed venture with Steam Machines didn't destroy PC gaming, Xbox leaving game consoles is not going to destroy console gaming either. Weirdo vendetta you got, like console owner stole your lunch money 20 years ago and Asmongold is a full time PC warrior adult.

    Call of duty is $70. I don’t buy the skins because they’re also pricey. On top of the expensive game. But if they put the game on game pass I’d probably be more likely to buy a season pass or skin. And that’s what I think is part of their frame of reference.
