That’s the reason why I quit having study groups with guys away from home. Some dudes would drink and get out of control. I’ve heard stories of classes getting fired for acting dumb.
I read a case were a female conductor had her boyfriend in her room. They got into a fight, after they had some drinks. The fight was loud and went on in the hall way. A complaint was filed by a Guest. That conductor no longer works for the RR. Even without drinking things can get out of hand. So please listen to this brother, no drinking and I say no other outside person in your room.
No alcohol is worth over 100k a year. We've had 3 people get walked out in 4 weeks of training school. I don't work for UP, BNSF, or NS but another popular Class I railroad.
Very good information. Up here there's been guys that got caught with weed and to get their jobs back had to sign multi-year contracts that went so far as to say if a manager sees them out having dinner and alcohol they are permanently re-fired. It always makes me laugh how many show up for hiring, do the initial tests/meetings in which they are beyond open about how you will be tested for employment and open to random testing entire career. And then they fail the first drug test. Don't even bother wasting everyone's time if you're going to fail the first test.
Hey what up bro, something I wanted to come back here and request you do a quick video on is CT’s being vigilant and watching out for things such as derails and tracks not properly lined and to let them know that if a crew gets in trouble while they are working with that particular crew that they are essentially done! They will fire you! We just had an incident where a crew derailed some equipment because no one removed the derail and they fired the CT. Please be careful and be aware of your surroundings and know your yards! It will save your job in the event someone makes a mistake.
Hey brother I watch all your videos multiple times. I start training soon. I wanted to know how many questions are on the signal test? Do they give you a practice test while down in McDonough?
Yes, you can take the practice test as many times as you want! I think the amount of questions may vary depending on which type you’re on. But if I remember correctly it was like 40-50 questions on the signals test.
You're protected on that one. You may have to take off the day before that way you can't be called back. If you're out of town they will more than likely deadhead you home the day before and deadhead a conductor off the extraboard to cover for you while you're gone if I had to guess. Not 100% I have somehow never been called lol.
I have a question can I drive my wife and son to the hotel with me for training if I pay the extra cost or is that not allowed just a thought after you said you can take a girl to your room
Moral of the story. Why do you want to work for someone who treats people this way. That being said. The UP had no problem drinking at your away from home terminal but don’t over do it.
This is great info man. I don't drink alcohol because I hate alcohol. I also hate all sorts of drugs with the exception of prescription medication. However I do drink soda. I mainly drink Mountain Dew, mainly Baja Blast, but I drink a lot of Mountain Dew, which I know all too well that Mountain Dew has a lot of sugar in it. I'm not exactly sure how my Mountain Dew intake would be bad on the railroad, but I still question if sugary soda which I drink is good on the railroad.
It's a good thing I don't ever drink. I have a question tho. I'm still currently waiting to get a start date back from NS. Passed the drug test and etc. But I think it's because of the looming recession. Does NS just completely forget about certain people when we go into a recession?
No, if they hired you and it’s taking a while to get back with you got a start date it could be a few things.. they like to send a lot of people to school that hired out of the same yard so they could be waiting on their background and drug test, or it could be due to demand. If you hired in at yard C and yard A and B are really short handed and need people quicker than yard C then you will basically be on hold.
Went down for MW&S training back in April and I actually no longer even work for NS they fucked me over and let me go but while I was down in Georgia the hotel staff didn’t give two shits about what we did and half of my classmates all drank in their rooms so I think it just depends on what hotel you’re in mine was fantastic
Also being a Union officer I feel the need to say, you have ZERO union coverage while in school, training and for the first 90 days after marking up. Moral of the story is don't be stupid and throw away a 100k a year job over a $2 beer!!
Which is exactly why you don’t join the union until they can actually do something for you. Something the union completely forgets to tell new hires!!! Save some money!!!
If you can't control your drinking then working for N S or another Class 1 R R is not the job for you. It is a very dangerous job that can kill you and others in an instant !!
Cell phones too. The unions can’t help you if you get caught on your phone on duty. At least with the class 1 I work at. Most of our engines have inward facing cameras and if something happens they’ll look at the video. Just better to not
Strange but true stories, an engineer tested positive for alcohol 3x in 3 years, even going over a derail engine lite while intoxicated, admitted to it, signed off on it, and was NOT pulled out of service for it, yes this happened on a class 1 railroad!!!
Had a group get fired from our class. Being douches to the hotel staff and possibility doing a white powdery substance. The hotel staff called the school and pulled video. They were gone the next day. They allowed family members only to visit the rooms and whatnot. I think some other people had “multiple” different family members lol
sounds like those guys weren't even railroad material in the first place... if we can see it's not a fit even during their stay in the hotel then it would be an even WORSE fit had they made it through training and gotten marked up
I would like to see a video about 49 CFR 242.123(b) that mandates railroads conduct unannounced operational “tests” of conductors. b) Each railroad shall have a program to monitor the conduct of its certified conductors by performing unannounced operating rules compliance tests. The program shall include procedures to address the testing of certified conductors who are not given an unannounced compliance test in a calendar year pursuant to paragraph (f) of this section. At a minimum, such procedures shall include the following: (1) A requirement that an unannounced compliance test must be conducted within 30 days of a return to conductor service; and (2) The railroad must retain a written record indicating the date that the conductor stopped performing service that requires certification pursuant to this part, the date that the conductor returned to performing service that requires certification pursuant to this part, and the date that the unannounced compliance test was performed. (c) Except as provided in paragraph (f) of this section, each conductor shall be given at least one unannounced compliance test in each calendar year by a railroad officer who meets the requirements of § 217.9(b)(1) of this chapter. (d) The unannounced test program shall:
GOOD ADVICE... once you get marked up they will already be hunting you and spying on you looking for a reason to can you... but geez don't give em' a reason to can you before you even get in the game
Excellent video like always! However, I was disappointed when I watched through 'til the end. I was expecting 1 minute of "How to get fired quickly" ending with a 4 minute and 13 second guitar solo. :P
havent watched the whole video but I bet damn well that they are paying the restaurant employees and hotel employees to watch you . I worked for a company not rail related that paid the bartenders across the street to watch people . I stayed in the hotel room because I'm not someone who drinks and those people got fired
Even if they paid for that room it is a clear violation of the 4th amendment Right to privacy persons and papers And effects against Warrantless Searches and seizure they have to have a warrant to search the search a room that has been determined by the Supreme Court time and time again that cause for 42 1983 And if the police were involved that would be 18 242 Working outside the color of law of the federal code And their policies and rules and regulations does not trump the Constitution whatsoever Regardless if you sign that paper or not
