Plant Carnivory & Nepenthes - Plant One On Me - Ep 046

  • Who doesn’t love a leaf that is adapted to attract, capture and eat an organism? Seriously, this is the stuff that sci-fi is based on, except that these adaptations are in real life. On this week’s edition of Plant One On Me, I pay a visit to Domonick Gravine who not only went to my high school (not kidding! must be something plant-related in the water), but also is the founder of RedLeaf Exotics and a connoisseur of carnivorous plants, particularly Nepenthes.
    This will be a two-part series, including (spoiler alert) a proper greenhouse tour next week, so if you don’t get to see enough cool carnivorous plants in this one, don’t fret: more on that soon. But don’t miss this episode either because Domonick drops some serious knowledge on plants that I don’t particularly collect.

    Fun fact: Nepenthes comes from the ancient greek word "νηπενθής" [nee-pentheez], which is translated to non {νη- (nee)} grieving {-πένθος (penthos)}, meaning the one who does not grieve, the one who does not feel sadness. They definitely don't look like they feel any kind of guilt for their carnivorous nature!!
    Thanks for the great video Summer!

    Deforestation, illegal logging, palm oil plantations, and on top of it, our government is planning to relocate the capital there. This could lead to two, either the presence of the new capital will prompt the need for conservation or encourage more deforestation for settlement.

    Hi. Just wanna point out that the Borneo Island & Mt. Trusmadi is in Malaysia, not Indonesia. I’m from Kota Kinabalu where Mt. Kinabalu is located & known for the Nepenthes plant & Rafflesia flower. People often confuse Malaysia & Indonesia but that’s ok. We’re neighbouring countries 😁 Love this informative video. So glad that people appreciates the Nepenthes plant & are learning how to care for them.

    How did I just see this now? I love my Napenthes alata. It's the plant I've had the longest and what got me into plants. This year I put it out on the deck above my garden and she lived her best life eating bugs and catching water and humidity from the garden. I also love that it eats up those BBQ ruining yellow jackets, one after the other. I call her Georgia. She lives in the sunroom for the winter. I am amazed at how well this plant has done in my semi arid climate and ridiculously strong sunlight. It is a hard plant to find a good bright spot for, but easy. I never have to fertilize. I don't need to worry about watering more than once a week or over watering. Definitely going to try the fish pellets!!!

    As the camera panned down the bench of various nepenthes species, there is a single Albany Pitcher Plant (Cephalotus Follicularis) nestled amongst the front row, which he has obviously also imported from Australia. (Albany Western Australia.)

    I received a baby napenthes a few minths ago. It was in a 2" pot. It has grown so fast and loves its new pot and it is already putting out two pitchers! So easy to grow so long as you keep it just in sphagnum and perlite and keep moist but not soggy.

    Sorry for always asking non-video related questions here, idk where to ask... Do you you guys know any daily/weekly active forum to talk about plants and ask and confirm doubts? I have so many doubts and I try to read on internet but I see so much different infor that I don't know what to believe in... I recently purchased a plumeria cutting (it's winter here, but a lot of people grow plants in winter inside with good conditions) And i'd like to know if it's okay to put the cutting in it's pot and then inside a zip lock bag to create greenhouse effects? Would it rot the plant or would it be beneficial? What about lights? i have a LED energy saving white 6500K bulb light, is it good to grow plants? if not, what lights (cheap please) do you guys recommend? Thank you.

    Unfortunately, I need to issue an important warning. People should know Domonick Gravine has a bad reputation in the carnivorous plant community due to a history of suspected plant theft from multiple nurseries including the most well-known, California Carnivores. In the past, he's been caught selling stolen goods, and when confronted, his explanations were investigated and proven to be false. When this topic comes up, Domonick often dismisses it as "a long time ago." He now presents himself as a reputable grower as if none of those events occurred. All this information is still publicly available; I can provide links on request.

    • @bonchbonch
      @bonchbonch 6 лет назад +4

      Gravine wrote this before deleting it: "That’s all false info. But nice try:) be inspired, not jealous 😘"
      To everyone: The "jealous" response is what Domonick Gravine has always used when this comes up. When confronted with the evidence, he disappears. His reputation goes back many years, when he was caught fencing stolen goods under the name Orchidstar87 on eBay. I apologize for having to bring up this negativity here, but this person is well-known in the community for his behavior, and in fact he's the reason many nurseries worldwide require an appointment prior to visitation.

    • @bonchbonch
      @bonchbonch 6 лет назад +5

      Gravine wrote this before deleting it: "I think it’s clear I’m known for the opposite of whatever your slandering allegations from 10 years ago are. Whatever mishaps I had on my eBay from that long ago is my business not yours. My customer reviews and eBay ratings are the proof in the pudding. Please move along and focus on your own life. You’re being what we refer to as a hater :) and you can ask the worlds best nursery Exótica Plant how helpful I was to them during my two week visit, I bet all the plants were still there too;) You’re fighting a Battle you’ll never win. Enjoy your new year and focus on the good stuff xxx and stay tuned for part 2! It’s soooo good!!"
      To everyone: Domonick Gravine always writes "jealous" and "hater" troll responses. He never addresses being caught selling stolen plants or that the explanations he gave for the source of the plants were found to be false. He's suspected of multiple nursery thefts which affected visitation policies worldwide. eBay ratings and feedback aren't much to take stock in--eBay flagged him as a being suspected of fraud, and he used to bid on his own auctions to increase the price. Two names to look up are "Borneancanableo6" and "Orchidstar87". He's well-known in the community and is on warning lists as someone to avoid. The funding for his nursery comes from his partner and not from a successful history as a reputable grower. It's all a front.

      bonchbonch I'm not sure about you 10 years ago but I was a very different person to what I know myself to be now. When you pass judgement on others, you attract judgement on yourself. Summer brings all her plant loving people to us so we can share in the beauty, wonder, magic and joy of nature and it's creations. Your ego and your need to be right will never ever be more important then any plant and neither will I. We only have this moment, so don't waste it on negative illusions of the mind. Be a plant and know your purpose, they don't judge, they are too busy living!🤐🤗✌🐔🍃🌻🌿🍁

    • @bonchbonch
      @bonchbonch 6 лет назад +6

      Donna Bawden, his behavior had ramifications throughout our niche community, some more recent than 10 years ago. People can't force themselves to forget that rare plants were stolen from them. Communities must protect their members by looking out for each other. You are free to make your own judgements regarding Gravine. My only intention is that you do so with full knowledge of his history. His lack of remorse settles that question for me.

    • @breathinggreen2790
      @breathinggreen2790 6 лет назад

      bonchbonch whatever happened is past, I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong and I'm on no bodies side. My thing is that you are putting these plants , that you and your community love so much, in a bad associatian. From this now I will always think of your beloved plant species in a shadowed light. You are making these wondrous plants wear your negative emotions. Until you forgive you will never be free, don't let somebody else have control of your happiness, you only have a second on this 🌍 . Be free, be happy.😊😎😌

    Like the plants in the same places and locations they are found, so are the freshwater fish and shrimp affected by palm oil plantations, poachers and climate change. The whole ecosystem are truly affected by people's interest and the efforts to conserve the habitats of either plant and fish.

    He is well-known in the Carnivorous plant community as a suspect in many Nepenthes thefts from multiple greenhouses over the years. Irresponsible to give him this platform without doing your research about him and the hobby.

    Not "evolved". The term to be used there is "adapted". In order for the plant to go through the process of Darwinian Evolution, it would have to become something other than a plant. A different "kind" of living thing. We haven't seen a different kind of anything evolve into something other than what it was. No evolution. Thanks for the info on these plants. Good stuff.

      What you're saying is not true... All species are constantly evolving in order to survive. Adaptation leads to evolution...
