I have to sadly agree about supermarket craft beers. I loved them for so long but they all became the same. Now I'm back into good simple bitters which are terrific
I also buy weissbeers which are beautifully flavoured. I feel that the supermarkets have come close to giving up on craft beers as well, re-stocking is slow and displays are shrinking.
There is the price consideration too. My preferred beers now are just so much cheaper and value for money. Good, honest review Simon.
Which supermarket beers of the more traditional type do you go for? I particularly like Otter Ale, enjoy a Trooper or Old Speckled Hen too but these bottled brews are not the best value.
I drink strong Belgian and Dutch beers only now. At least they have real quality. Duvel, La Chouffe and Grolsch Kanon are the 3 best for me. Are there strong bitters also that you can recommend? Im not that clued up about British beers.
@@Beesa10 There are several you would like. My favourite is Old Speckled Hen. Deep dark and rich . Comes in at 6.5 %. At the 5% mark I really love Abbot by Greene king.
I drink a lot of Duval, and when you price this up at average £2.50 a bottle for fine Belgium beer and these craft cans are sometimes the best part of a fiver 😂 no thanks.
@@steventopping106 I have to agree, but such a shame. The game lost it's way. Duval is superb.
What you must remember about businesses including breweries is that they change management as there is always a battle for power. New managers and ild ones for that matter are there to cut costs and maximise profits. They care about their million pound houses and not if someone things their beer is a 10/10.
Ha ha ha. I pissed myself when you said.... oh its terrible... lol
😂 Yeah same as.
@@HampshireBlue ffs lol
I think there are two ways of looking at it Simon... A brewery can have their craft beer arm and the supermarket craft beer arm. You're not going to find good quality craft beer in the supermarket. You might find the odd one, but it'll mostly be poor-quality beer brewed at a price point for mass consumption.
However, that same brewery might still offer top quality craft beer through their websites and available in proper bottle shops. But yeah, I'd steer clear of the supermarket stuff as it's all pretty woeful.
This is a fair comment, but beers bought from websites are SO expensive !
@@runswithwindz9875 oh I absolutely agree, they are too expensive in these times but then save yourself the bother of buying the supermarket stuff as it’s overpriced rubbish.
@@runswithwindz9875I actually this the above comment is the nail on the head. Here is the thing.. I'm in a minority when I say I'm happy to pay the price for something I like.... I have a few friends who I managed to get off Stella and drinking Level Head .. yes it's not the best representation of craft beer at all, but it was a start... Yes I wish it was cheaper but I'd rather pay a pretty penny for something better...
A real shame used to associate Salt with quality.
They still are a solid brewer I'd say, this is just a gimmick. You know without tasting it, it's gonna be pretty awful. Sadly too much nonsense on the shelves. Northern Monk for example do some great beer, but then too many jokey rocket lolly/aunt Bessie's/cheese and onion beers
They still pump out some of the better supermarket beers imo.The odd dud doesn't change this.
Had a half of this on keg once and it wasn’t too bad
Brewdog Grind. A coffee stout that's soooooo nice
That beer surprised me. Think it is brewdogs best beer in a long. Long. Long. Loooooooong time.
Says all that in a Tiny Rebel shirt, the worst offenders for syrupy brews
I don't know what you were expecting. Hooch is absolutely rank. It tastes like chemicals.
I hope this doesn't happen to the craft breweries here in Ireland. 3 local breweries near me Franciscan Well, Blacks Of Kinsale and Rising Sons haven't produced a chemical-filled sellout beer yet and still hoping they never do.
These jam-tart, chocolate cake and peanut hazy IPA have drowned the beer market in pure crap. I feel like they're trying to make beer like vaping flavours and appeal to the 16 years old who'll drink it up.
Im in the exact same boat as you though and feel the same way. I decided months ago, unless the beer has 3/5 on untapped and is from a nowadays reliable brewery, I'm not spending the money to try it as they always turn out crap.
Not to be a male chauvinist but this is aimed for a lady's style of beer, the wife tried this the other night when we had the 4 days of summer, and thoroughly enjoyed it, light refreshing drink. So in a way hats of to Salt for brewing this.
Have you tried Burnt Mill Brewery's beers, they are excellent. ?
Don't waste your money buying Foster's Shandy, it's utter shite. No idea why Simon keeps touting it, must have been rat-arsed when he tried it 🤣
Probably :-)
You have really summed up my feelings, as you the 'craft beers' in the supermarkets now are not where they were 5 - 6 years ago, me I'm goimg back to good quality European lagers, thanks for the heads up on Lidl importing Czech lagers like Budvar and Starapomen oh and good old Lefe 🙂
Love the T Shirt mate. My mum used to love the hooch😂
please let this be a one off!! Salt are my mumber 1 supermarket craft ale brewer....Tram is still a winner
When you said,’Diabolical!’ And then took another sip…legend! You do it so we don’t have to. 👍Totally agree, I’m mainly drinking German or Czech brewed lagers, or traditional stouts. Craft is too much of a roulette wheel now.
Love a good rant! Well done. Needed to be said!🙂
I had a feeling your reaction would be this! Probably good for the toilet with it's lemon fragrance?!
I have strong links with salopian brewery, who in my opinion produce some of finest beers in the country, they are very innovating with their specials but never lower their standards to use unatural ingredients 🍺
Hi Simon, Check out Rossa Blanca beer from Spain 3.4 av . I Was surprised how good it was for a lower alcohol beer from the supermarkets
He's already reviewed it. I'm a big fan of the beer myself.
I get what your saying about new breweries growing, but in a way its the whole cycle of it all, they get big then they either go downhill or they fall. Then new breweries appear to replace them. Rather than drink the supermarket rubbish try a Northern Monkey or Rivington Beer you'd love them. Both just up the road from Cloudwater.
I think it’s a sign of the wider problem with young people fuelling the markets for many things.. It’s bubblegum vapes, it’s tick-tock, it’s fruit/berry ciders, it’s hoppy wild flavour hazy “craft” IPA’s… Basically if it ain’t flashy and trend setting it’s not going to make a good insta/youtube short/ tick-tock social media content and won’t get any hype. Bloody painful
Spot on !
Do young people fuel the market or do these companies know they can just forgo quality by pumping everything full of sugars and the young'uns have now been brought up expecting everything to taste like a haribo?
I know it's the done thing to blame 'young people' but they weren't born in their ways, *someone* taught them
Tik tok*
@@rhyshayman8479I don’t watch it so don’t know what its called, all I know is it’s poison
@@Pembolog I’m a youngish person, 35 and have always gone out of my way to try to be aware of what the companies around me are doing. I’m not convinced ignorance is a valid excuse
Hooch is pure e numbers like Haribo lemon flavour I absolutely hate that thing where you get a sweet taste, but then the bitterness comes through, like sweetner for coffee...such a cheap way to 'flavour' a beer...
Perfect review and comments-I feel the same, theses big boys have sold out and are now making’nothing beers’ and stupid beers- great channel and keep up the good work🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Fair play Si, you've seen it 1st hand more than most. Seems a general business model, trajectory these days. I 'll stick with simple beer ingredients. IPAS bitters et c: )
I like the Tuberg Lime Cut. The latter is a beer brewed with lime. So at least the idea is good. But it is special taste not all may like it.

@@louisbeerreviews8964 thank you for the correction:)
I've also given up with craft beer. I think alot of people now are going towards good quality German beer. I'd much rather pay £3+ for a great Helles or Pilsner or Weissbier. Even better, get 4 bottles of Franziskaner for £7 from Tesco. Or Paulaner Weissbier from M&S for £2.50. Craft beer is just all artificially flavoured and overpriced now
reminds me of coke lemon, was disgusting and tasted like fairy liquid aswell
Huckaback is still a great beer. And their Tram Dipa is top notch. Wouldn’t touch a hooch beer with a barge pole! Knew you would hate it before you took a sip 😂
Too many in jazzy patterned cans on the shelves. I avoid them.
Are you now sporting a Bill Haley Kiss Curl? 🤣😂🤣 Long live the 50s.
Used to be a time where I saw Salt: I bought the beer. I still love Cloudwater though…
Most of the premium craft beers in supermarkets are like this, and sure you’re paying the price for the novelty and the (I imagine) smaller batches, but if the beer tastes like crap then you’re literally getting nothing for your money other than disappointment. You can buy a nice weissbier for half the price. Granted, it won’t taste like unicorn candy farts or Santa’s sugar coated bumhole but at least it’ll be tasty.
Come on Simon, not this again! There is decent craft stuff in the supermarket and there is also daft stuff brewed for a certain audience that you know you are not going to be keen on, why buy it and give us the same reheated rant for the 10th time???
Also, a lot of breweries want to get into supermarkets to flog some volume to stay afloat and/or introduce new customers to their brand. They almost always sell beers of a higher quality via their website. It is naive beyond belief to think you are going to get the same product in a supermarket for £2 that you have to pay £6 for in a bottle shop.
As for the hissy fit about not supporting any new breweries in case they 'sell out' by selling beer into a supermarket it just makes you look a little silly and dare I say it, snobbish.
5:33 "... tastes like chemicals ..."
Like all food, drink and everything else.
Its a shame, my local does Salt Loom pale ale on draught which is delicious.
I'll never understand your grading sometimes, Simon. Given your acute disgust at this beer, how exactly does it merit two points? What are the redeeming features, in your opinion? 😂
Its wet :-)
@@realaleguide and how exactly am I supposed to argue with that? 😂
My very first pints were lager and lime, so I can't be hypocritical about citrus flavourings, but I wouldn't be interested in that sort of thing now.
The Craft Beer equivalent to the end of the Roman Empire?
Its the opposite here ... but I am picking out my favorite craft breweries and so far so good
Salt huckaback is a nice beer
Are you related to the chap of The mighty Garage RUclips Channel 🤔 lol
I’m surprised at Salt, all their other supermarket beers are very good.
Salt Tram is right at the top of all supermarket beers.
Let’s hope Salt brewery learn from this mistake.
All I drink at the moment is leffe or duvel
Can you review smithwicks its Irish ale
Did you force yourself to drink the rest of it or did it go down the sink?
Sink
@@realaleguidestill hoping for sink (the pint) or down the sink ratings at the end
I'm more worried about Northern Monk ,8 years I've worked for Home Bargains and last week was first time I've saw them being stocked at my work ,only 3 lines Order of the faith 6.6% ddh and Tropical world 6.0%,ipa both only £1.49 each and dated next year plus a 330ml 4 pack cans only £3.99 forgot its name but has Guava in it if that helps
I feel like I don’t even need to read the reviews if it’s in Home Bargains 😂
What store if you don't mind me asking? I checked my local one today but no luck 😢
It hurts my sole that salt do decent beer and yet they feek they jeed to lower themselves to this.... Chinook which you reviewed simon was a fantastic beer 😢
The only one that I think has any merit is Mad Squirrel craft beers.
This beer isn't good at all. I've got to say I find your comments on not supporting up and coming breweries to be bizarre. If you want the beer scene to thrive then that's a backwards attitude.
"another volume and profit disappointment" - isn't that why you release 3 or 4 videos a day?
Huckaback has definitely slipped. Not the same mouth feel at all. Very watery and less flavour. It happened a while ago.
Meby try staying out of the supermarket. Iv had some incredible Norwegian/ Scandinavian beers recently from proper beer shops.
Pretty harsh on the new brewery that simon .Not supporting local independant brewers because you don’t like sellout supermarket beer seems insane . if it’s dark element brew co then they’re really good
Salt isn’t a new brewery you absolute tool
Tiny Rebel were the Dark Elements of the year 2011, in age you gain experience, I am not doing it anymore
That’s fair enough,we should all do what we think is for the best . I think the inevitable move to supermarkets has slowed down massively in the last couple of years .All you see is the same 5 or 6 that sold out a while ago clogging up the shelves . today’s top craft brewers aren’t looking like they going anywhere for a while in my opinion
@@AlienMidget123someone wasn’t paying attention…….
Hopes dashed by a pinch of salt 👀
lol my reaction to these are similar, the "PSH!!!..... ok lets move on"
if youre not willing to support local breweries you might as well give up now
'Twisting my Lemon Man' I hope this beer is no reference to the old Blues number ' Lemon Song' by Delta Blues master Robert Johnson and also recorded by Zeplin on Led Zep II.
Think it is more Stone Roses.

Supermarkets have got on to the idea they can overprice something if its in a colourful or pastel can.
Sell them individually
Add some guff on the side and charge twice what they do for cheap lager.
Knock off brewdog really 💩
Wow - I mean I hate hooch its gross. However your rant about the not getting involved with new breweries was daft. The beer industry is struggling, so to survive breweries do what they can, if they didnt more than what already have would go out of business and then that would impact the channel surley. Also just because you champion a brewery for making a good beer does not automatically mean the brewery hits the supermarkets. I'm sure most brewers business plan does not have "get into bed with real ale craft beer" written in it.
2 sips of this and it was Sink Pour. I expected a sharp lemony blast with a malty background. All I got was Lemon Fairy Liquid ! 🤮🤮🤮
Question. Is it worth it if these breweries make crap like this to keep the cash flow coming so they can continue making better but less profitable beers?
Had it last week 1 of the worst beers as usual from a supermarket went down the sink ,no more
Jam Tart Lagers lmao
It's all according to the profit-driving, capital-accumulating internal logic of capitalism, mate. Get market share, grow bigger, reduce costs (e.g shittier ingredients), sell out
->market concentration
Then why 2/10?? Give it zero if it’s that rancid.
That looked rank! One to defo avoid...
I usually don't mind the flavoured ales as much but the new Aldi 'Peach on the Beach' is literally undrinkable to the point that I threw it away. I never throw beer away. It's utterly disgusting, literally tastes like washing up liquid. Stay away!
Couldn’t agree more fella just had one what a let down amazing on the nose then ya taste it just woeful massive let down
Lol, I liked it 😢
What is the world coming to? Beer flavoured lemonade! 🍋🤢 Not for me. 🥴
Shandy or radler anyone?
Shame..Salts Huckaback is a great beer ..
I cant stand the new versions of IPA masquerading as craft beer. I hanker after a proper ruby ale somewhere between Tetley's and Hobgoblin. Can you point me to any beers in that direction?
Rudgate Ruby Mild is an excellent beer in the style you are looking for.
Don't buy them then. There are still hundreds of traditional ale type beers around my local supermarkets......
Timothy Taylor landlord, Courage Directors, Bass, all fit that description.
@@jamesm90 Many thanks for that. Just out of interest, I used to live 500yds from the Timothy Taylor brewery in Keighley.
And visit Saltire fairly regularly so its disappointing that SALT have produced a disappointing beer.
Just found this beer well " not good " .
I have thought so many Craft Beers were just an alco pop by another name for years now! oh let's make a New England IPA with lashings of hops and then chuck, mango juice, grapefruit or milkshake at it! I'm surprised it's taken you this long to get frustrated! The partnership with Hooch was a given, they were aping that trend for years. Beers' brewed for people who don't like the taste of beer! Lager and black anybody?! 😂
I hope they have paid Sean Ryder for using that name. And I won't be buying this rubbish either.
Most people just can’t afford craft beer its too expensive. Most people drink to get pissed due to the stress of life so craft beer is not the best. Any more food reviews? Can you review some food from M and S or Waitrose instead of that Aldi crap. All that low quality scran and gassy craft beer must be affecting your guts. What does your Mrs say to it? Do you still sleep in the same bed?
'What does your Mr...' please finish the sentence, I want to read the rest.
His Mrs is his wife the one who will have to put up with his flatulence!
@@box1007 that is one of the joys of being married. farting in bed next to them lol
That explains Simon’s choice of diet.
In terms of value, wine offers more value, you can buy a decent bottle for £7-8 and it's approx the same amount of drink as 4 cans of beer ....
I only by craft that gets 8-10 on this channel now, it's too expensive to buy cans that are rubbish!
Looks like piss 1st thing morning not beer!..who buys this crap!
these fruit craft beers are sh1te , like most craft beers that are over priced
Proper real ales are what you want these so called Craftbeers are disgusting, im not surprised supermarkets can't sell it. All tastes of lemon washing up liquid to me.
You are confused, they can sell it. That is why it takes up so much shelf space but clearly it just isn't to your taste.
these fake lemon radler things always get me sooooo sick. I cant even get tipsy on em, I get a straight up hangover immediately
