- Welcome to LOTR Warmaster
In this video, we dive into the mesmerizing realm of LOTR Warmaster, a 10mm scale game that brings the TRULY EPIC battles of The Lord of the Rings to your tabletop. Whether you're a seasoned wargamer or a Tolkien enthusiast, this game is a must-see!
Im a complete beginner to the game myself so you get to see me lose my mind trying to work it out. Ive always struggled learning tabletop games, but this one is just so cool, I feel compelled to give it my best shot!
We'll explore the basics of LOTR Warmaster, including:
What rule sets are out there and where to get them
*what minis are out there and where to get them
The core phases of the game: Command, Shooting, and Combat.
How to set up a game.
Is it fun?

I am a yuuge fan of Warmaster Revolution since about 2 years but have not yet dived into the LotR rules. I love the books and films though, so inspired by you and Jmac it's only a matter of time.
A few comments on the Warmaster Revolution rules (since you requested them 😇):
1. There a 3 types of characters: Wizards, Heroes and the army General. The maximum distance that they can issue orders depends on the type: Wizards have a maximum distance of 20cm, Heroes 60cm, and the General can issue orders at any distance.
2. Your shooting example was correct with one minor exception: the direction of the "drive-back" is directly away from the closest attacking enemy unit, not straight back in the direction that the attacked unit is facing. This means that the unit of Fountain Guard that was shot would be driven back into the side of the other unit of Fountain Guard which can either (A) block the drive-back (causing the retreating unit to become Confused), or (B) move along with the retreating unit.
3. Close combat is the slowest and most complicated part of the game, no doubt about it. But, having become more used to it, I quite like it. Just take your time and go with what feels right whenever you can't be bothered to work out the exact consequences. Warmaster is a gentlemen's game.
4. One small correction about close combat: both sides fight simultaneously. That said, it often "feels right" that the charging side, or the active player, rolls their dice first. No casualties are removed until both sides have made their attacks though and all stands in base contact get to attack.
5. You mention that the command mechanic appeals to you. I can only agree! I think it adds a lot of flavour to the game and forces you to prioritise your actions (just like a commander would), weigh the odds of succeeding carefully, and come up with contingency plans or new plans throughout the battle.
6. You mentioned that your friend David is working on some rules for 10mm Lord of the Rings. That sounds interesting! Care to share more about that?
Seldomly have I seen better-looking armies and battlefields than yours. There may not be active Warmaster players where you live (or maybe there are? Who knows. You could ask in the #player-locations channel in the Warmaster Revolution Discord), but I'm sure that many people will be keen to play when they see the grandeur of your battlefield! I would love to see battle reports on the channel in the future 🙂
Thanks again for the incredibly inspiring content. You have a new patron.
PS. The sliding focal length shot at 6:20 is sublime.
Thank you 🙏 😊
Awesome 👌 this will be a great resource for me and people watching. I've pinned this comment! I'm looking forward to chatting to you on the discord about the game, I'm hungry to learn!
Daves Rules are really cool and as I understand it aimed at making the game a little simpler and better for larger scale battles.
He's developing the rules atm ready for testing as I believe.
@@arvidkongstad115 I’m still in the early stages of beta testing, before I unleash them to a wider public for more play testing. I hope to be able to do this in the new year!
@@davidwasilewski Exciting 🙂
@@davidwasilewski How can we follow the progress and be notified once it is out Dave?
"Your love of the halflings' leaf has clearly slowed your mind."
This was truly the adult experience of learning a wargame. especially a new one. The hardest part is finding somebody to play the game with haha.
😄 yeah absolutely! I'm still yet to find someone or tbh just have an afternoon I can even play anything. Had a convo with some chaps at my friendly games store that were interested so there is hope yet. ...but a fools hope
Warmaster has a soul that no other tabletop game has : the massive battlefield gives an immersion and depth, really fun. Can't wait for the battle reports.
Yeah from what I've learnt so far, I totally agree 🙂 I'm looking forward to that too, just gotta convince someone to do it now. Cheers dude 🙌
I could name about 10 other games that do that
I think this sentiment is only true if you are a pure GW gamer (and even then you now have the Epic 40k reboot), otherwise there are plenty of games which do have that magic, and arguably much smoother rules - for example epic scale Warlord range of games (Black Powder, Pike and Shotte, SPQR). I'd recommend giving those a shot if you are a fan of Warmaster.
@@jakubgembicki7725 The Warlord games, Hail Caesar, Pike and Shotte and Black Powder are based on Warmaster. All these games were developed by Rick Priestly.
I'm not a pure GW gamer. Actually I don't play any GW game at all. And I don't consider Warmaster a GW game, since GW has discontinued it over 10 years ago and it is now a community driven game.
@@tabletopmika4349 You are absolutely right - and I was responding to the original comment on Warmaster having that immersion and depth with the scale. Plenty of games have that scale and depth, and not only the Warlord ones. Even in GWs range we now have the new Epic which gives a great feel of grand scale.
Warmaster isn't the only game at this scale of immersion or depth, and saying it is felt GW-centric since GW doesn't have much things in that scale. Again - that was the comment to the original commenter who suggested it being the only game with that feel, and not yourself :)
The creativity and amount of personality in these videos always blows me away! Regardless of how interested I am in the subject, it's always so entertaining to watch
Thank you dude! 🙏🙂 loving your videos too! 🙌
I LOVE the way you Edit you videos. Love this! keep it up man.
Im laughing most of the time and at the same time I’m blown away with the stuff you have created 👍
Ah thank you so much, really glad your enjoying the vids and liking the Minis 🙂🙏

@EmilHagstrom-vr2bk ah yeah the Vortex is currently undergoing a make over with magical paint and hours of magical time 😄 Cheers dude, glad ur diggin the trippy vibes
Considering I just binged all the 10mm LOTR videos, you have earned my subscription sir.
Thank you for binging them and for subscribing, I really appreciate it 🙏 🙂
This is awesome! I just discovered your channel and I'm always happy to find someone interested in 10mm. I know you just got Warmaster but if you were looking for something similar but maybe a bit easier to understand, you might want to take a look at Irregular Wars Fantastic Battles. Just wanted to throw it out there. Nothing wrong with warmaster. But I can't wait to see what other games you play! There's loads of good stuff out there.
Thank you 😊 🙏 Yeah it was fun trying to get my head around Warmaster. Ok that sounds cool, I'll look into that aswell! I've heard Midguard is really good too
I was introduced to Warmaster Ancients in 2010 by longtime gaming friends, having been into sci-fi, and ww2 to moden warfare and GW LOTR middle earth. Which my middle son loved in the mid 90s.
My biggest claim to fame is beating Rick Priestly in 2012 at a compettion in Mansfield. I didn''t look into warmater fantasy and I am now asking myself why didn't I consider using this system for LoTR.
Thanks for this light bulb moment and links to the files. I know my middle son, now with a young family would love this too.
Oh wow! Bet that was alot if fun playing Rick and what a result 🙌
Yeah I'd heard of the smaller scale fantasy game and saw some snippets of it but it had sort of mythical status at that point. Finding out you could do massive lotr battles at a smaller scale, I was sold immediately. Ah that's great! My pleasure, thank you for watching and leaving a comment 🙂🙏
I am HYPED to see your first big game. Warmaster's a real joy to play. Don't be intimidated by the rules - they're glass-smooth once things click for you.
Ah cool 🙏 me too, this was enough to get me VERY excited to play an actual game. I'm hoping the Xmas brak gives me enough time to learn this properly and convince someone to play it with me. I bet! 🙂
Pal, I am so impressed by this video. I've been into small scale stuff for a while and advocate for 6mm or 10mm quite a lot. Using any models for any rules to play the games you want is a dream I've been chasing for ages. LOTR Warmaster is absolutely inspired and thank you for sharing this with the world. Looks like I've got a new project in the works.....
Thank you 🙂 😊 🙏 really glad you enjoyed it. ah, that's great! I'm really getting into it, I love the way they look and the feel of actually having a huge army. I was so pleased to discover that the game was great too. Awesome to see a game kept alive by a dedicated community as well. Ah, nice, enjoy!
The stop animation was awesome.
Thank you 🙂 😊 🙏 I really appreciate it cus it took ages! 😄
The stop motion animation and the background music, classic! It's certainly one of those games I'd play but have too many Bolt Action minis to muster and paint.
Thank you 🙏 😊 Ah yeah, that's cool though, I hear good things about bolt action!
You hit the nail on the head with the internal camera idea. That’s the only reason I build terrain, paint models (and very rarely play games) cracking video as always mate. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ah yeah, when Dave said it to me, it really resonated. Getting fully immersed in it all is where the Joy is. I love your vid aswell dude, that slice and slot stuff is genius! Your builds always turn out amazing 👏 Thank you 🙏 😊
Instant thumbs up when that Stop motion movement started ^^
Ah thank you 😊 🙏
As always, hilarious and brilliant mate! Finding myself getting caught in the tractor beam that is warmaster and 10mm tastiness
Thank you dude! 😀🙏 yeah I'm well down the 10mm pipeline now, it's definitely fun. Everyone is talking about this new Midguard game aswell, apparently good for 10mm and mini agnostic
I did originally subscribe for GW LOTR but now it’s also for a fucking good laugh you and Jmac are legends
Aye man cheers! I'm glad your enjoying the vids and getting a giggle out of it. Had a good laugh making the intro that's for sure 😄 🫡👽
@@TheWizardsBrush I bet you did 😂

Great video! Thanks for posting this.
Ah thank you, glad you like it 🙂🙏
Love watching your videos, they are always such a vibe
Thank you dude 🙏 I really appreciate it 🙂
Warmaster is class! Absolutely love Warmaster.
Yeah what a game!
Your channel is so awesome !
Thank you 🙏 😊 glad ur enjoying the vids!
Никогда не играл в варгейм по Средиземью. И вряд-ли когда-нибудь поиграю. Но я получил заряд умиротворения и позитива от видео, оно душевное. Keep going!
Yeah its not for everyone, sometimes it's good just to collect or watch videos about it. I'm really glad the vid has had a positive effect on your day. I am grateful for your kind comment 🙏 🙂
Ur vids opened this game up to me. Warmaster "standard" is what im planning to play. Working on 4 units of empire halberdiers atm 😅 72 tiny boys to paint in those units and then there's the next lot of units and the 2nd army of dark elves. I to have strangly fallen in love with the style of game and there's a few folks at the lgs who have armies and would like to play. It's amazing going from that half painted ugly stage to seeing them based and all together. Looks amazing! Looking forward to seeing a full scale battle if you get chance down the line.
Ah that's great! I'm really glad these got u into the game! Yeah it's always satisfying when thier all done and in neat formations on the table top. Hope it brings you as much Joy as it does for me. I'm hoping to do a battle report of some kind soon 🙂
so cool great video!
Thank you 🙂 🙏
Just good old (new) fashioned wargaming entertainment. Well done. And Warmaster, once understood, becomes a very easy system to pick up and play.
Thank you 🙂🙏 since making this, things have started to click into place, I'm definitely enjoying it!
There's a historical ruleset called To The Strongest which has a LoTR version with the serial numbers filed off called M2: Magic & Monsters. It's gridded which takes the fiddliest part of these scale of games, movement, and makes it even faster to play. You can even use your existing 10mm collection to play it.
Ah that sounds great! I will have a look online and see if I can link the rules here. I'll take a look as well. Thank you 🙂
Cool videos. And the title is very true. Shopping on etsy right now lol.
Thank you 🙏 😊 Ah nice!! Happy shopping! 😀 What faction you getting?
Lovely armies and a nice looking table! I’d learn combat by starting off small - just two units on each side. Then double up. Get your head around the basics then, like you said, try to find an opponent who is also interested in learning the rules. Another very interesting and well edited video!
Hi Dave, yeah I need to do that for a good few weeks and work my way up. I think I will convince my mate who's coming over to play some MESBG a couple of weeks to give a small game a go. Thank you 🙏 😊
Great video, subbed!
Thank you 🙏 😊
Love that I found this !!!!
I am currently working on painting a Rohan army in 10mm. I am using Cromarty forge goths.
🙂🙏 Ah nice! I really want to make a Rohan army, I'll check out Cromarty Forge
You're a silly bastard and silly happens to be right up my alley. Subbed!
@@MasonBryant Guilty as charged. I welcome you with open arms to... Silly.. Billy town. Damn lost the thread, I dunno 😄 thank you 🙏
Seriously, wearing a fuzzy loose sweater like that is asking for an accident! Those spearmen are going to go for a ride when they snag his knit!
It's not happened yet but I'll pull up my sleeves just in case!
The ambient music in the video is exactly the sound I hear in my head whenever I zone out while reading rulebook of any tabletop game 😢😂
😄 🤣 🎶 yeah that out of body experience
Middle-earth's hero at it again! Your strategy is as sharp as Sting. 🧙♂️🎲
Aye I dunno about hero, more like middle earth's bumbling fool 😄 🤣 seriously tho thank you 🙏
I am from Brazil and loving it dude 🎉
🇧🇷 Thank you 🙏 😊 glad your enjoying it!
The battle of five armies was my first introduction to warmaster.
Ah cool! 😊 It does look great! I definitely want to get hold of that Box one day
Excellent video, man! Glad to see I'm not the only one who struggles with learning rules. My own 10mm Middle-Earth journey hit a similar roadblock. The Warmaster rules made my brain melt out my ears. I'm going to persist but I'm also open to using other systems if it doesn't click. War of the Rings (as in the 28mm one) can work in 10mm apparently. There's a new system coming out called Midgard Heroic Battles which is scale agnostic. Anyway, can't wait to see more!
We are trying out 'Fantastic battles' by Nick Wright, using our WM armies. It is scale and mini agnostic, simple elegant rules, and a flexible unit design system. I will be fighting my friends Gondor forces with my WM High Elves.
Thank you 🙏 😊 yeah it takes ages to sink in, I tend to misinterpret things or forget things easily. It's a bit of an issue with learning anything for me, I have to be persistent. I love learning new things though! Glad to meet a kindred spirit 🙌 yeah your one of many who's mentioned Midguard so I will have to check it out soon!
Oooh that sounds interesting too, I have alot to check out!
@@TheWizardsBrushHi
I was a playtester for Midgard, released Monday 18th November and I used 10mm "Battle of Five Armies" figures from 2005. I found them quick, full of flavour and written with Middle-Earth in mind as a setting. The author has done demo games from the First Age of Middle Earth to the Third.
Google
mogsymakes battle of five armies
to see his brilliant multiplayer game with 28mm minis
Heroes in the games lead by example, and the army is held together by reputation. If the reputation fades to zero, the army loses, so heroes can try to bolster the morale by doing brave things, but those can go wrong
The width of the base is the measuring distance. In a small space I used 1 Warmaster base as a unit, but if you wanted a spectacle, a standard Midgard base could contain 9 Warmaster bases
Warmaster is, of course, great fun too.
Warmaster is a wonderful system. Large battles.
Yeah I can't wait to have some massive battles!
This looks great. I need to see this for the last alliance
Oooof now that is a great idea, imagine a mount doom board with the last alliance vs Sauron! I need to find Minis for that! Thank you 🙏 😊
Happy to see the gondor units healed up
Yeah 🙂 I managed to save three bases of cav and a couple of spearmen bases 🙏
great video!
Thank you 🙏 😊
Great stuff! Thank you
🙂🙏
Awesome simply awesome.
Thank you 🙂 🙏
Loved the video! One Question though, not sure if it has been answered yet: Why did you not use the rank and file LOTR rules from War of the Ring for this? I´m currently thinking about doing it after seeing it on Instagram w while ago and would love to see more love for the old system.
Thank you 🙏 😊 I found one downloadable for WOR(linked in my description) Regrettably I ran out of time to include it it in the video or time enough to study it. I'm assuming the rank and files rules are in there? I'm hoping to learn as many rule sets as I can so I can share and compare 🙏
It can be hard to find new players, that's why I started a beginner campaign in my local gaming club. The goal is to play with fully painted armies, so we started at 500 points with 500 points more in each subsequent month until we reach 2000 points. I've finished painting the models for my main army list ahead of time, so I can focus on building terrain.
Just take your armies to your local gaming club an invite people to a game. As soon as they see the models, they will want to start their own Warmaster army.
Next year I will dip my feet into Warmaster Ancients and start my first army for the Punic wars. That way I will hopefully catch some of the players who are more into historical gaming. 😄
PS: Tabletop Simulator is a good choice if you want to play Warmaster online.
Ah ok cool that's a good aproach! I seem to recall of the odd Warmaster game being played at my local hobby store. I need to track down these mythical gatherings. Yeah I've heard about this a few times now, I will give that a go for sure. Thank you 🙏 😊
Oh Boi the War of the Ring rules where what I was looking for since years...I got the BOFA Box on Ebay years ago but without the rules/points. Now my Journey can start :)
Ah cool! Yeah It took me a bit to find them. Mate that's really awesome, that will be fun to paint up. Glad to be of some assistance in you're journey fellow traveller, enjoy! 🙂
@@TheWizardsBrush Really thanks a Lot, also for this great video. I just need to finish my other zillion sideprojects ;) may the light of the Valar shine upon you.
@eikmaster8947 😄 me and you both 😄 and upon you 🙏🧙♂️
Small correction, when your Mordor unit shot, you rolled dice for all the stands, but you really only roll for those that can see the target. Stands can't see past each other.. they need to be in line formation to get lots of shots.
Great work on the video and the armies. And Warmaster is a good system for what you are going for. The Warmaster Revolution rulebook is a little hard to navigate for the combat resoulution. Even after a year of playing we are still going to the rulebook to work out how to handle odd situations we find. Like the book shows ideal situations, but not a lot of gnarly ones. Which would help. But I find a lot of the time, especially when the battles are big, small mistakes are a wash anyway.
Ah yes, I see, so only the front row can shoot? I think I remember seeing that in the rules now and slipped out of my brain on the day. Yeah I hope to start playing games soon so it can all start sinking in. Thank you for watching commenting 🙏🙂
@@TheWizardsBrush There are some rules for hills and visibility.
From my experience, the best way to learn a new game is to start small. No pun intended. Just do a couple of units with a commander first and then build it up. Learn little by little. It was a good try though. Maybe there is the game on tabke top simulator that someone can play with you and talk you through it? I'm teaching a friend through that. Started with combat patrols and now onto 2000pt games. Still learning though but the games are getting quicker to do.
Yeah absolutely, I learnt MESBG in a similar way, I'm no great player but I'm able have fun games here and there. I'm talking to someone who has played for years so he's helping me to understand it. After a few games I'm sure it will click in. Doing some small battles sounds like a great shout. I love what I've learnt so far about the game, it's an absolute gem! Thanks for leaving a comment 🙂 🙏
Are you planning on posting LOTRWM battles eventually?
I'm intending to have some kind of battle report yes 🙂
@@TheWizardsBrush cool
Been enjoying watching this project come along, but like it seems you experienced, my primary wargaming buddy and I just got straight up confused by Warmaster's mechanics - or at least how they are written and presented. I've got a historical, pike-and-shot era 10mm project on the backburner, and I'll be looking for another option when it finally comes time to play.
Thank you 🙏 😊 yeah, I enjoyed reading it and the basic rules seem really cool. Combat phase got a but... interesting. I'm hearing good things about Midguard, I may have to check out myself.
MIght want to check out the newly released Midgard Heroic Battles. A lot of people are using it for LOTR battles. There's even a video of the creator playing it with Rick Priestly and getting the 'thumbs up' from him.
Lots of people mentioned that today, I'm defo going to have to check it out! Be cool to do a vid about it at some point 🙂
I know base size is important in Warmaster, and that is a huge base for the dragon. Is it some special class of monster? Looks like bloody Gojira has shown up.
It's the Nazgul on Fellbeast from Wakes Emporium, believe it or not it's how it comes. It may very well be too big for the game technically. 😄 🤣 yeah I was surprised at it's godzilla like size
@TheWizardsBrush One of the principles in classic Warmaster was that giant monsters should not dominate the game. But I don't know what this lad can do.
Karl-Franz on a dragon in Warmaster would still be pretty small next to a state trooper regiment. Monsters and heroes are almost supporting units to masses of troops.
One rule was to measure command distance from the base of the general, and if they could measure command from a giant base it would be an advantage. I think you can say "I measure command from the nose of the dragon", a point on the model.
Ah ok, that's very good to know, I'm still ready the LOTR rules so it be interesting to know how that effects that version of the game.
We need more of the shank engines.
I definitely want to do a video on Shank Engines soon! I Might do a train kitbashing vid with some lore etc
Just wanted to add a second comment. A friend and I are starting to get into this properly. We're buying models and figuring out details soon. Once we're under way, if you still haven't found many people to play with, I'd be up for having a chat and figuring out if you wanted to meet up for a game or two. Any excuse to get models on a table.
Ah cool 😊 A couple of us are working out some games etc, it's been hard to find the time too yet. Would be ace to set up a little event or day to play. Feel free to drop me a DM on instagram
Nice vid. You got it. Not many mistakes. I know the wife / GF response. Nailed it!
Thank you 🙏 😊 ah cool, I did feel lost at points so its good to hear im getting some of it right at least. I like to show the process of learning a game, full of misinterpretations and mistakes. I think something we all go through while learning and it can be fun 😄 🤣 cheers 🙏
Blood for the blood god!
Likes and comments for the algorithm god!
Algo devours all, your offerings are welcomed and I give you thanks!
Warmaster is an old game, written in the old loooong paragraph style, with lots of flavour and exceptions everywhere. I find it tricky to parse!
Yeah it's fun to read definitely, lots of character. But is certainly tricky to comprehend in parts
I've played several games written by Rick Priestly. There have to be a better set of rules for Lord of the Rings battles.
With that said I haven't played Warmaster so this could be the exception. it's a great video and a good introduction to the rules.
Perhaps, I'm hearing good things about Midguard in the comment section today. I interested to learn as much as I can about all the systems eventually. Ah thank you 😊 🙏
@@TheWizardsBrusheven Rick Priestley signed up to the Midgard FB group 🤣
But he does love games
Other folk have adapted his "Hail Caesar" rules, which are have some similar principles to Warmaster but have differences in unit sizes rather than the Warmaster three stands. I think the current fantasy mod is "Shadow Storm"
Again - Great!
Thank you 🙏 😊
11:10 FORWARD YOU MAGGOTS!
😄 🤣 🙌
I feel like Hail Caesar, which is kind of an evolution of the Warmaster rules, is a better game. However, it is purely historical, so you'd probably want to invent some rules for magic, and make up stats for things like Trolls. I'm not aware of a fan made Lord of the Rings supplement for Hail Caesar, but it certainly seems like something that should exist if it doesn't.
Sounds cool! I do want ti try historical at some point. I will have to check it out, is it easy to find online?
Hilarious how rick priestley never created anything new with warlord rules and just reheated warmaster rules
New video hype
🙂🙏
I would strongly recommend you check out a new game that was just release, Midgard, by James Morris. It's a mass battle wargame of epic heroes in either history or fantasy, so good for the Siege of Troy, Viking Sagas, or Lord of the Rings. I've used it for 10mm LotR and it worked great.
Yeah I'm hearing good things about it, I will have to check it out! Thank you 🙏 😊
gutted you need a 3d printer for them cool gondorians :(

Yeah i defo need some!
10 mm doesn't make it a tiny game.
And better it means you could go larger in numbers! I've seen all sorts of 12k 40k games. Wheres the 10k warmaster games? Jst imagine how freakin awesome that would look! I mean even double size at 4k points, as time would be an issue at 10k 😅
