This was the Olympics where the official marathon distance 26 miles was extended another 385 yards, so Queen Alexandra could watch the start from her window of Windsor Castle..... It's still the official distance today.. Nice little tidbit.
"this is crap and boring"? What?! This is extraordinary! The fact that we are privileged enough to be able to watch a major world event from 104 years ago unfurling in front of our eyes is 'crap and boring'? How old are you? 8? 9 maybe? Time to grow up and engage with the world both past and present, I'd suggest.
I set out to comment & & compliment BF, the 'posters' of this almost eerie stuff but Starpilot17 did it for me rather succinctly & well. 1908......the year my dear late mother was BORN & I'm almost 70! Remarkable that we're NOW well into that age where we may view 100+ year old reality and see our distant ancestors AS THEY WERE......simply amazing stuff.........brings a lump to my throat for some inexplicable reason. The all-leather & steam Olympics! Thankyou BF
My father was born in 1908 and his elder brothers might have been in the crowd watching. Six years later they were in France in the trenches. These old films bring back their experiences.
@2:10 it implies that Tug o' War was only an olympic event one year ("featured for the first and last time") but that's not true- the tug o' war was an event every olympics between 1900-1920!!! Personally, I think they should re-install this event!!! haha
Astonishing that this clip is over 100 years old and no one in this clip is alive. Amazing to see the dress what women wore, especially at a time when they weren't even allowed to vote. Very conservative dress, compared to nowadays, where it's more free. It's so wonderful this footage has survived, to go back time to see what sporting life was like in the Olympics.
wow with just 2 years notice? can you imagine us doing that now? 6 years notice and they still havent managed to sort security out. watching these videos is just incredible - a window into another world. its inconceivable to think the horrors that lied ahead for all these people during the first world war
This is fantastic! Was every event in the stadium? The pool in the infield is surprising. There would have been fencing and equestrian competitions, spose those were elsewhere.

In 1981, the first London marathon was run in 2 hours 55 minutes by a man dressed in a formal waiter's costume, carrying a bottle of wine on a tray all the way. His time would have been fast enough to win the first four Olympic marathons.
Look at those bows. No stableizers or scopes for aiming. Just pure eyesight. When the archery actually was about pure control of your body and eyes. More challenging
Actually Europe was the only one continent where fencing had been practiced, the US ignored this sport until 15 yrs ago, they started on winning some medals thanks to Italy & France that schooled northamerican fencers. Asian countries started on fencing a bit before, 20/25 yrs ago.
Hitler brought all the mock pageantry and nationalistic posturing to the Berlin games in 1936. Like the opening and closing ceremonies. Most people though it was a good show without suspecting Hitler's hidden motifs.

no, there was never an "official marathon distance" of 26 miles to start with. It was around 40km, more or less, distance from Athens to Sparta.
@@tabstabs1204 No no no, the distance is suppose to be Athens - Marathon (the battle of Marathon) You know Νενικήκαμεν - Pheidippides etc...

I remember the stadium being demolished in early early 1985. I competed there twice for school athletics competitions. Didn't win but got that far.
Great footage. Well done BFI.
A fantastic complication of vintage videos. Outstanding! ☺

Message to the IOC: Bring back Tug-o-War!!!
Interesting, the Games being switched from Rome to London due to Vesuvius erupting! I hadn't heard that!
the lady archers have perfect technique
Tug of war!!!!! I love tug of war!!!
I wish I could see more old footage. Like complete opening ceremonies

As a rider I'd love to have seen the equestrian events of these olympics, if they had them.
There was polo in the 1908 Olympics, but no equestrian. Equestrian had first appeared back in 1900 but then it only reappeared in 1912.

Tug of war should be brought back.
Seeing Fencing before electric scoring, I heard most results were bias in favor of the continental fencers.
