It's always helpful to hear people talking honest impressions of their plants, it's pretty common for me to wonder if people really talk from their actual experiences or they just brought a brand new plant for making content, at least you keep it real and I like that, also, poor first plant I feel like her mistake was to have the wrong color when she's showing a new leave 😂 loved it ❤

I am new to the hobby, and there are so many plants I can't differentiate between because they look so similar. Maybe I'll change my mind at some point, but if there is a choice between an easier plant and it's higher maintenance lookalike, I'd go for the easier one. I also want to own as much very different looking plants as I can, I have very limited space.

    • @kat1984

I'm not a big fan of philodendron. My favorites have become aglaonema, snake plants, African violets, scindapsus exotica, tradescantia/wandering jew, and pothos. I also enjoy phalaenopsis and jewel orchids. I like easygoing plants that don't require a lot from me. Stick with the common plants, they've become common for a reason. Plus, you don't have to worry about the plants being poached out of the wild.

    • @RyJMFilms
      @RyJMFilms Год назад +6

Learning names comes with time. I watch a lot of houseplant RUclipsrs and follow loads of accounts on insta and learn of new plants every day. Starting new, it's best to find plants that you like that are cheap, nothing worse than dropping a lot of money on a plant, and have it die on you within a couple of months. Going with the lower maintenance option is sensible, it can take years to learn the needs of certain plants so make sure you do a little research before, and you'll be a plant whisperer in no time.

@@kat1984 I recently got into caladiums. I was able to rescue one from being seriously overwatered. I had also forgotten it in the car for a day. It did not look good. I treated it for root rot, potted it up in a well draining mix, chopped off the mushy stems, and each tuber has given me three new leaves! I also have a philodendron Birkin and an Alocasia Amazonica from IKEA, and so far they're ok. I'm still figuring out the best lighting for those two.
I'm also really into propagating. It is so much fun watching those roots grow!
I like most aroids, although I prefer self-heading philodendrons. I love my Scindapsus and my ZZ. I've got some Fitonias that are doing really well, and I'd like to try a Calathea Orbifolia next. They have them at IKEA! But for now I'm not buying anymore plants. I need to save up for shelves to put the ones I have first, and get some growing lights for the winter. Oh, I also have this cute curly Chlorophytum Cosmosum Bonnie which is starting to push out those long stems with babies.
Most of free time goes into researching plants. I might be addicted...
Those jewel orchids really interest me, how are they to care for?

Please don’t worry, you’re good 😂 When I watched a plant roast video for the first time it was so cathartic 😂 I was raised to always be nice and so on and I still wouldn’t go to a plant and be like “You’re hideous! Die!” but it was so relieving to just hear someone say “I think this is ugly 🤷🏻‍♀️” and not feeling bad 😂 I mean, everyone had opinions and you’re not saying that it’s a fact that these plants are bad but a) say very nice things about them too lol and b) say it’s your opinion and I don’t think that it’s something people should take personally because it’s not about them but about your experiences and taste :)
I love red undersides btw, dark red is my favourite colour! 🥰 And I agree on orchids … I don’t get the vibe. I don’t even think they’re thaaaaat pretty but maybe that’s due to the fact they’re just everywhere and I’m so sick of seeing them 😂

With regards to the string of turtles, and basically any other pest-infested plant, the only thing I can say that works (in my experience) is a powdered or granular systemic insecticide. Personally I use (in the US) Bonide, their granulated systemic houseplant insect control. It lasts for six months. I originally bought it for fungus gnat prevention. Nothing else works! And I would flush plants with peroxide, put sand on top, all that… and still do, but with this granulated treatment, as well.
They also sell a similar insect treatment for outdoor potted plants, but I’d imagine it’s roughly the same composition. And if you read the labels, it’s non-damaging to the water table, won’t contaminate runoff, the environment, etc., and it specifically targets invertebrate pests... when I say this stuff works, I mean it’s a Godsend! All plants that are susceptible to pests, such as fungus gnats, mealies, aphids, scale, thrips-even ants and caterpillars-this stuff is the answer. It lasts about as long as a granulated fertilizer, so, for several months. Sprinkle a very thin amount on top of the soil & lightly water in. If you’re ever concerned you’ve watered too heavily & flushed it out, you can sprinkle a new thin layer (if that) on top again. No danger of over-treating or toxicity. It’s not deadly or in any way lethal. The plant absorbs the chemical & becomes unpalatable to all pests! I love it! Used it since 2008!

.. I bought a single leaf Hoya Kerrii few years back, because I thought it was cute 😳.. After about a year or so I was wondering why I really had it, but still I was taking care of it.. After another year I gave it to a neighbor and told her what I was told, that it would forever stay a single heart shaped leaf.. She was happy and carried home the poor thing like it was a baby.. This spring she showed mee a few pictures of the plant asking what was going on, but the pictures was so shaken that I couldn't tell, and asked her to bring the critter instead.. And so she did, like 3 months ago.. It turned out that it had made a new stem and a new leafs.. I removed a dead leaf, checked the roots and gave it a bigger pot.. It had been growing in a nursing 3 cm pot.. I wonder if it's still alive ☺️

However the reason I'm responding is I am the Friend of a friend that successfully grew a vine from a Hoya Kerri cutting. However it took 2 years and I was moving across country later that summer and it was one of the few plants to die in the movie. I still tell every one who wants one to look for a rooted plant with a active growing vine. I agree that most of the 1 leaf blind rooting will only die.

I know the pain of having any crawling philodendron, but they will get bigger leaves faster than climbers imo. If you want a centerpiece for your plant collection, I think a gloriosum will be a great choice, but you must chop and propagate periodically. What I really don't like about gloriosum is that there are so many "forms" on the market, which are merely individual variations but sold as a selling point for the higher price.

I bought a mature P. Lupinum at Ecuagenera in the german nursery, they had multiple ones there, really looked great at that time, but that one is a pain in the ass to grow really, already had to cut it multiple times because leaves started to get smaller and smaller with huge spaces between new leaves, and it has perfect conditions with moss pole, cabinet etc. Now started a new one with two of the stem cuttings, so it can directly start growing on a pole, at least the cuttings root and grow really fast. Next option will be my grow tent with even better light and more humidity, really want a nice and bushy one with decent sized leaves :D

I’ve recently acquired a tortum. I love the funky leaves. I guess we will see how it grows and if I regret buying it. I ❤️ my string of turtles but have never had pest in them 🤞🏼. I can see how it could be underwhelming in a collection of your size. I’ve only got about 80 plants 😀. It’s nice to hear other’s opinions. I 💯% agree with the Kerrii. I think it is underwhelming and people who have it vining struggle with it having funky leaves instead of the pretty heart shaped ones.

I wrote here when you got the second Obliqua as I had just got an almost identical one too. Like you I was going to try it in my normal houseplant conditions. Results so far? It's identical to the day it arrived, 5 nice healthy leaves, with a tiny amount of yellowing on the tips which was the least I expected. And a runner that is now 60cm long 😂 I chopped it yesterday and will see what happens in the prop box, but I don't really care much, it's just an interesting experiment. Would I get it again? Yes, but only because I really like the look of the plant and 5 healthy leaves are acceptable. I don't have room for large plants, nor for many more than the 70ish I have atm, so it can stay small, and sit in its corner making me smile when I look at it.

I have the green Philodendron warscewiczii. I am a bit shocked at its growth rate because I only got it as a baby two months ago and needed to repot it immediately. Now, two months later, the size if the leaves tripled and I need to repot it again (which I refuse to do for the time being).
It's easily faster growing than my Pothos.

I chopped it and put the cuttings in a terrarium. It’s rooting and happy. I think it’s going to always be in an enclosure.
I do love the Tortum and Strings of Turtles but no worries, you’re entitled to dislike amazing plants 😉
I add SOTs to other plants where there’s a lot of boring substrate showing. I love the look of them taking over. I’ve had very few issues with mealies though. Knock on wood I don’t jinx myself again and encounter more pests.
Interesting about the Hoya blooms. I don’t love the Kerrii either, it’s not very exciting. I think they need more than one cutting in a pot to look full enough maybe.

Good job on this video. You didn't waste alot of time on each plant. Pretty much got right to the point. I think all your reasons were good although my experience has been different in some regards, of course. I have a vericosum that is beautiful and pest free. Not a fast grower but easy. I agreed about the Kerri. Just gave mine away for the same nectar reasons. What a mess; and so difficult to trellis. I have a red backed plant that looks out my window, and the red backs are everything if that is all you see. Any thing Brazil is a no go for me. Not just the oblique, but the original plant runs like crazy. Ugh. The string of turtles is also a no go. It doesn't really grow pretty turtles that get much size on them. It just gets stringy. Still love my gloriosum, but I can see into the future that you have encountered already. Maybe our love affair will end. Again, congrats on a good video!

Urgh verrucosum and gloriosum where do I start. I couldn't leave these two plants alone for 5 days without them getting riddled with spider mites! I chopped back the verrucosum and it's just starting to put out leaves again within a high humidity cabinet (it can't stay in there if it gets big and then what?) The gloriosum I treated for spider mites, turned my back again this week and they're back and now it also needs chopping argh! I suppose I don't have to worry about repotting any time soon 😏. I desperately wanted both these plants and my bf spent a lot on the verrucosum so I don't feel I can bin them but what a headache!

Only way the monstera Peru grows for me is in a mini green house, in orchid bark... it puts out roots above the soil that then dig down, every time I see I new root, 1 week later... there's a new leaf. I'm in Nova Scotia Canada so the sir is so dry during winter, but in summer it's 100% humidity and very warm 24hrs a day.... I can take the Peru out of her dome then and she thrives... but for winter... she has to be domed pain in the butt but I refuse to just leave her die she's been cut down so many times 😅 and the plant after the Peru, the philodendron... found one of these ad a baby at giant tiger box store 4 years ago... she's beautiful 😍 I don't understand how she got in with $5 micans and pathos but there she was didn't even know what she was until she started to mature wish I could add pics

12:36 My biggest gripe with P. tortum is it's very slow growing without a significant humidity boost. 😒 I have a baby one for 3 months, nothing happened, then I put it in a very humid greenhouse, misting 6 hours a day. It pops a brand new leaf within a week. But without a good light source, the new leaf isn't mature enough. 😕 This is the type that is not rewarding at all grown from a baby size.
On the other hand, warscewiczii aurea is my showpiece. After it passed that period of root rotting and stem edema (tip: grow it in orchid container and medium, as little peat as possible), it grows like a champion 🏆 and handles all conditions: direct lighting: no problems, cooler temperature: unhinged, lower humidity: you betcha, thrip and spidermite outbreaks nearby: not a single blemish on this bad boy. I grow mine from a small 2-leaf 4" pot. In 5 months, it sizes up quite nicely with a 3-foot spread of foliage (7 leaves + 1 unfurled). It makes a good color contrast in my collection, too. ❤

I have currently fallen out of love with my Philodendron burle marx variegata. I bought a propagation a couple of months ago with two mature leaves, one without any varigation. For like two months the variegated parts have been turning more and more brown, to the point that this leaf just looks ugly. Even a new baby leaf doesn't bring me joy bc it's so tiny compared to the mature leaves and had some issues unfurling. I'm thinking of just giving it away but I actually like the non-variegated mature leaf. Maybe I should just embrace the fact that my new leaves won't have varigation but at least they will mature and don't look as hideous as the variegated one.

It just gets watered and fed, and maybe in 50 years time it might have put on a bit of growth worthy enough to take notice of, but then again I'll be dead and won't care 🤷‍♀😂😂The biggest plant that needs a roasting, in my opinion, is the Philodendron Pink Princess. That thing should have the Princess stripped from it's name! Hardly any pink, just muddy coloured mangled leaves that take forever to size-up decently, and a horrendous growth pattern. I might roast coco substrate - anything coco related , plants just don’t grow happily in it (exept hoyas). Waste of money.

@@Houseplantygoodness It just stock out for the first time. I started buying large Philodendron hanging plants from Etsy because I suck at propping and I am tired of wasting my money.
