Holy Shit!!!! these are super sensitive and detailed EQs.
I really like how they help the guitar rhythm (especially the left guitar) pop out and sound more articulate. And it makes drums punchy.
This is the only 500 series ens I will always love to get
Great demo -- those units sound fantastic.
Yes they are! Thanks for watching!
Good job! Really enjoyed this video. I always thought this eq made so much sense.
Awesomeness awarded to you Charlie! Love this video🤘Rock n Roll……..🎸
Thank you Arlo!
Would love to see a demo for the 80b 500 series preamp if you happen upon any.
love this. i am 5 minutes from buying a pair after seeing this along with "mixing music analog" review. but what are the units to the left???? I really want some great filters!
Good drum recording.
Really love what I`m hearing with this EQ. Hopefully Trident will put a stereo unit in a 19" rack.
Excellent! 👂✨
Love these EQs!
I think I’m in love 😍
I love this eq!! , BUT, I hate this new face plate... I'm looking for where I can still find the previous model 🙁
Thank you. Lovely presentation. I'm also looking into 551s for bus processing, would you recommend 551s over the 80bs?
That's a tough one as they are very different animals. The 80b will be a bit less colored than the 551 and maybe a little more flexible having 2 sweepable mid bands.
The mid band on the 551 is sweet though but the high band is hit or miss for me and a little goes a loooooong ways. When the high band works it's wonderful when it doesn't it's a bit too harsh.
Low end on the 551 is massive and has real weight to it. The 80 is tighter and doesn't have as much weight I would say. That can be good or bad depending on how dense your mix already is.
Having said all of that both are nice eq's. For me the 80b lives on my guitar/distorted guitar bus. I like how it shapes (or doesn't mess up) already complex sounds. The 551s I use as swing eq's. Sometimes it's a vocal push, sometimes drums need weight, sometimes a guitar needs that beautiful mid range, etc.. I think you get the point.
Sorry for the long winded explanation. Hard to explain what you hear in words...lol.
@@Ultimatestudiosinc Thank you for the response. I hear you. The 551s maybe what I need. I’d like some good mids and low end. I may consider 80bs later on.
It’s these or the SSL 611 for me. I don’t know just yet.
You can't go wrong with either of those!
hey Charlie cool video... what would you think about doing a comparison to the analog obsession plugin. just curious if its a close emulation.
I have to say, i am trying to go more outboard but that analog obsession plugin is pretty damn good. Punchy and detailed. I'd love to see a comparison as well.
what are you prefering between the 500 A-Range Eq and this one ?
How do you think these compare to the Neve 551?
well done as always! curious how different they are from your console. owe you several beverages to say the least for all the info you have shared over the years.
Charlie, you are generous in your videos. Thank u
-Frenchie Smith
Hey Charlie, are the level knobs center detented? at 6:25 when you enabled the EQ on the acoustic track there was an immediate effect on the high end and it looks like you were flat so I'm wondering if it was really flat or if the EQ has a "sound" built right into the circuitry...
Hey David! The level knobs are detected and the EQ is flat so there does seem to be a little flavor built into the eq. I think how much you would actually hear it would probably depend on the material though.
🔥
Hmm. Why would you set a 50Hz highpass on drums? Interesting decision.
One thing that can be cool is setting the high pass and then boosting as the cutoff point. Can add a nice bump but keeps the bottom tight. I do a variation of this a lot. Especially if there is a big bass track and maybe synths competing for space on the bottom as well.
Are you new to mixing?
@@Gang-25j weren't we all at some point?
@@damianoakes2592yeah but we don’t question others as though we know everything
Can’t beat this for the buck $
Completely agree!
Since when is the 80b loved by many engineers? 😂
For decades actually...
@@Ultimatestudiosinc weird, everytime i brought the 80b up everybody was shitting on it. I like it myself but everybody was always going on about the trannyload which varies with gain and induces ringing and dampening.
@@mirkomarkovic3438 interesting. are you talking 80b consoles or specifically the 500 units? 80b consoles are a part of the history of recorded rock. I always loved the 80b consoles which is why I have Trident.
If you’re talking about the 500 units I have noticed none of what you mentioned and have found multiple uses for them.
Having said that i do prefer the console eq’s (based on 80c) as it has more vibe and size. To my ear the 500 80b is definitely cleaner (or more transparent maybe?) than an 80b console eq. Depending on your tastes and preferences that’s either a good or bad thing.
@@Ultimatestudiosinc I was talking about the console, sorry. I found it weird too, i seemed to be the only one to like that board. I did many great sounding records on 80b's so your comment kinda puzzled me 😂
Yeah i find the 500 EQ's to be cleaner too, may have something to do with the change in design on the two midrange pots.
pretty horrible sounding tracks, not even these beautiful eqs could make them flattering
