I agree. The sales has tanked mainly because of incredible ugly design of the 4gen, comparing to classic and distinctive design of 3rd gen. Facelift id not fixing too much. Maybe model 3 has done some damage to sales as well.
jancula9 why did toyota do this to the Prius???The new Prius looks absolutely, positively horrendous. Totally embarrassing to own, let alone be driven in. Why, Toyota, why???
because of its super weird design trendy in early 2000's (but now ugly in today's perception of the customers). that mpg can be reach also by 2020 toyota corolla hybrid. I don't know why toyota produced a hybrid corolla to finish off their prius... instead of redesigning the prius correctly like the looks of honda insight.
UpperRobin29, funny you mention the LFA, I do see a lot of similarities in the expressive angles of the 2016-refresh models. Not so much in the refreshed one. It annoys me when I try to explain stuff like that and people are quick to shot me down over it. I speak about the similarities in design language. Now if the next Prius was offered as a sedan shape similar to what Honda did with a tasteful yet exciting design, there really could be a renaissance for the nameplate. Check out the new second gen Mirai, it’s really nice compared to the current one. Would love to see a Prius with lines like that. I give car designs a lot of benefit of the doubt but the first gen Mirai is a tough pill to swallow.
@@andrewbolivar3040 Interesting. I've never heard of the Mirai platform until now. I assume you're talking about the 2021 Toyota Mirai because that looks like a nice, sleek, large sedan. The furthest thing from a Prius.
@@UpperRobin29 yep that's the one. It would be great for Toyota to make the next generation model Prius in more of a shape that resembles the 2021 Mirai. Its still not perfect but it does look pretty damn good. They'll still be the perennial haters who just don't like the idea of a Prius at all. Toyota could never appease those people and shouldn't bother trying.
I’ve owned a couple of these cars, gen 2 and a ‘14 Prius C. The others have quirky looks, but this is a face only a mother could love. The changes help, but still. They really should make them all look like the Prius Prime, which I think looks great.
Thank you for introducing PRIUS in the US. I am very satisfied with the purchase of 2020PRIUS in Taiwan. The only regret is that the road environment here does not require AWD in most cases, so there is no AWD specification option in Taiwan.
I hate the regular Prius, but do like the Prius Prime with premium looking quad-LED headlights, front/rear LED turn signals, and the curved glass rear.
Agree Eclipzo77, they really dumbed them down to really old looking lights when it was really the coolest thing of the 2016-refresh models. They look cheap.
@blackericdenice Agree completely. I think your comment applies to virtually all manufacturers. I think we have moved more toward Eastern Europe circa 1972 as far as vehicles are concerned. All of the vehicles look the same, very few colors or options offered etc. I feel like few of the manufacturers really even care if you like their products or not. Like, “Take it or leave it!”
@Justinian Yi I like Camry and most all Lexus products. The BMW “Supra?” Keep it. I owned an AE86 from new so I definitely remember better days at Toyota.
I paid 25.7k out the door for my gas RAV4 LE AWD with blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert. It’s a lot of car for the money. People buy Toyota for value and 1960s appliance reliability. It also has Apple Car Play so I am good. The AC causes hypothermia in short order on 90 degree days. The heater is like a blast furnace.
@Brian I believe Toyota is doing a lot of things right. But this Prius and the BMW “Supra” are two examples which indicate the opposite. This Prius is capable of delivering closer to 70mpg, yet it does not. Diesel Fiestas were available in 1986 that got 75mpg. I’m glad you like your RAV. I got into a certified 2016 CX-9 Signature for 700 less.
2W3X4YZ5 The Prius is much bigger than a Fiesta. Once you go past 40-50 mpg the cost savings of getting even better mpg is very small. Toyota should make the Prius an Electric Car with 500 mile range. I’m good with a 9 second 0 to 60 time, but I want range.
8:55 why does he act like 1 touch is a feature? It doesn’t require anything more from the manufacturer to include it, just slightly different programming, The only reason certain cars don’t have it is by choice because it’s annoying
@Stereo Typist I love your answer. Even tho I hate a lot of the people that drive these cars, the cars themselves are actually built really well considering that they're a low cost super economy car.
the awd is kinda pointless really i'd rather just a really buff guy sitting in the back seat that pushes the car and jumps in after it gets grip in the snow/ice.
The Prius was popular because people believed they were saving the environment. The high efficiency of the car paired with near silent EV mode in city driving made drivers felt they were polluting less. The fact is, they're just saving money at the gas pump. Mother Nature doesn't where you emit your greenhouse gases. The mining, transport, and production of the batteries burn diesel. If I get a hybrid Toyota, I just think of it as saving money. But not emitting that much while driving in the city as the car switches to EV mode when it can.
I have a 2016 and love the aggressively futuristic design. I can understand it’s not for everything but I love how the design is consistent. Like the interior door treatment crossing the exterior body crease. And the taillights are amazing. Love the neon effect of the signature line. Now a lot of interesting car designs get neutered with the mid-gen refresh due to people making a stink, resulting in a more mild ‘safe’ styling. This is all for the haters who don’t plan on buying the vehicle either way. I saw this with the gorgeous B9 Tribecca that looked like a poor man’s Porsche Cayenne that turned into a mild uninspiring first-gen Rogue lookalike. For this mid-gen refresh I don’t mind the revised headlights, though I prefer mine. But what really disappoints are the taillights. They went from futuristic, dynamic and expensive looking to really cheap old fashioned and simple...boring.
Toyota has definitely rested on their laurels with the prius. No innovation, almost no change at all save for the almost pointless awd system. With other high mpg options out there offering so much more, Toyota needs to realize the Prius isn’t a big fish in a small pond anymore.
The rear cladding isn't to look rugged since the FWD model has it too. IMO it's the biggest design mistake on the car, the front and side don't bother me, but the rear is terrible. I actually think this is still a very compelling vehicle, especially on the west coast where gas is approaching $5/gallon, but the Prime is more for the same or less money after incentives. IMO Tesla is not really comperable to a Toyota. Some early adopters will go, but I expect it's mostly Toyota's other hybrids cannibalizing sales.
I think this is the best looking model yet. The profile looks sleek. Idk what he is talking about. Its the cvt... that turned people off. Lower oil prices as well.
No, The Prius AWD system will activate no matter what from 0-6mph, if the vehicle detects slippery conditions then the car will kick it back on and the system can work up to 45-50 miles per hour, to which it will disengage to save battery power
If its anything like the 3rd gen I used to drive, you should keep it in B mode to keep the ICE running all the time. It's not best for economy but it definitely makes it more responsive.
My old Audi A2 diesel used to get 48mpg no matter how you drove it, plus it was waaaay better looking, more premium, more practical and smaller. How is this moving the game on? (Spoiler alert: its not)

I don't understand why everyone shits on the Prius so much. It's like Nickelback. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it but everyone feels like they have to hate it. It has to be ugly. It has to be slow. It's none of these things, this car looks incredible and slick. Just because it doesn't look like a LaFerrari doesn't make it useless. I got one in Blizzard Pearl and can't stop staring at it at night.
Front looks better, but can't believe they got rid of the taillights.... they were one of the coolest taillights on the market, new one has no design at all...
I own two second Gen Priuses (2007 and 2009). In some aespects, the second generation is better designed than 3rd and 4th. I’m more conservative in terms of design. I was thinking of buying a third generation, but in the second generation I somehow feel better. The fourth generation is too weird for me, the redesign has improved it a bit and it looks nicer.
Okay. The new ones look so good to me. Idk why people hate them so much. I guess I'm just insane. Hate the tires tho. But I really really like the new ones.

Toyota should’ve given the Camry Hybrid an AWD option. Would likely improve sales and be more appealing to people in colder climates. Skip this if you need AWD get a Rav-4 Hybrid
I have a old Prius with over 200,000 miles on it. I live in snow country, and the Prius is terrible in the snow. I had to get studded tires in order to be able to drive in the snow. I wish you'd tested the AWD in the snow. That's what it's for, to get you out of sticky areas. No one's going to buy a Prius for performance.
Toyota believes hybrid is the near future and fuel cell is the future. That’s where they’re putting their R&D money right now. They cite many valid reasons why all-electric isn’t a good business model for them and they’ve chosen to go in a different direction. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
The problem with the most recent generation of the Prius is that Toyota over-designed it style wise. And it's not really a function over style thing if the coefficient of drag is the same as a much better looking Model s
ecolon217 People complained it’s too boring or bubble like. So they made it aggressive in ‘16 and updated the suspension to make it sportier to match the new look. All of three years and they made it more boring again because people complained it was too aggressive. You can’t please everyone so they should pick one buyer and please them.

The Prius line is one of the ugliest production car lines of the last 25 years. It amazes me that people would drive a car as ugly as a Prius just to save a few hundred dollars a year in petrol.

I don't need the all wheel drive, but I love my sunroof.
I'd definitely buy a new Prius if I could, because the Tesla cars are too expensive.
With a new upgrades, I think Toyota still has a winner in the Prius.
The sales of it say otherwise under 50k units last year.
It lost it's spunk years ago. The trunk space and MPG are best it has to offer. Fusion Hybrid, Camry and Accord are much more appealing, similar mpg and better driving experience
The official car of the left lane camper.
Every fucking day. Every day there's a prius or corolla in the left going 40 in a 65.....
Not me.
I agree. The sales has tanked mainly because of incredible ugly design of the 4gen, comparing to classic and distinctive design of 3rd gen. Facelift id not fixing too much. Maybe model 3 has done some damage to sales as well.
Also why even get this ugly design when the Honda Insight exists.
jancula9 why did toyota do this to the Prius???The new Prius looks absolutely, positively horrendous. Totally embarrassing to own, let alone be driven in. Why, Toyota, why???
@@Unfinished_sentenc exactly... the design of the old Prius was actually somewhat ok...
Why is it so hard for Toyota to put all this great automotive engineering in a more appealing package? Come on Toyota, show the Prius some love.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Some people find caddy, buick, etc. appealing. I prefer Prius,
The side profile is actually nice, it's the details that fills it are all wrong.
because of its super weird design trendy in early 2000's (but now ugly in today's perception of the customers). that mpg can be reach also by 2020 toyota corolla hybrid. I don't know why toyota produced a hybrid corolla to finish off their prius... instead of redesigning the prius correctly like the looks of honda insight.
It's easy to understand why people don't like the Prius style... it's not Spectacular from any angle. But I've always kind of liked the design.
Keep in mind, this is the same company that designed the Lexus LFA
@@andrewbolivar6666 I don't think Toyota really can make the Prius like that. It would compete too much with the Camry and the Avalon
The rear lights are ridiculous, that’s the main reason.
More appealing, sure, but appealing in general, uh, no. Everyone should tune in 10/23 for the unveiling of the first Mazda EV at the Tokyo auto show.
WB Wayne that Mazda ev is just gonna be a cx5 sized plugin SUV
@@f181234
Ok, but what's wrong with that? It is still Mazda's first EV, and I am looking forward to it. A CUV size also makes sense in today's market.
I own one and I loved the design from the get go! =)
I love your videos! But your scoring system is corny af 😂
Mean s jack all
Don’t know why people don’t like prius? How can you not like 50 plus miles per gallon? Specially its almost $5 per gallon in California!!!
As a 24 year old I don't mind how it looks at all. I would feel different if it was a sports car.
Scotty Kilmer's next video:
*Shutting the doors on your new Toyotas? YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!*
Is it just me who’s with the styling? I kinda like it.
WhateverNevermind I love it!
I can handle it
I like it too. It’s lift back design is practical for cargo
I hate the regular Prius, but do like the Prius Prime with premium looking quad-LED headlights, front/rear LED turn signals, and the curved glass rear.
I don't think it looks terrible. I also wouldn't say good looking though
I don’t think it’s that bad until you get to the back. The back is just horrendous
The tail lights look ALOT better on this one than the 2016-2018 models, those were HORRENDOUS. I can at least tolerate this.
I own a 2017 Prius, and I really hate that they castrated the taillights on the new one.
Agree Eclipzo77, they really dumbed them down to really old looking lights when it was really the coolest thing of the 2016-refresh models. They look cheap.
I actually really like the rear of that car and the 2016-2018. It's just the front that kinda bugs me
Yes I already bought one!
Really strange how many options are not available with AWD.
Why does the back wheel always look smaller than the front? It's a trick of the design, because the back end is so high.
Toyota has gotten like American cars were in the mid 80s. They saw little need to bring in new tech because American would buy their bs anyway.
What happen to the long led taillight they had before? It made the car look futuristic.. they made it boring and outdated at the back.

No satellite or HD radio?! What the heck!
8:55 why does he act like 1 touch is a feature? It doesn’t require anything more from the manufacturer to include it, just slightly different programming, The only reason certain cars don’t have it is by choice because it’s annoying
I agree with you. Not a fan of one touch up or down
Not Royal Skyline it’s actually because of a US law www.google.ca/amp/s/www.cnet.com/google-amp/news/why-car-power-windows-work-differently/
A lot of people said the Honda Insight looks better than the Prius
I agree with that, but I think the Prius is a better car overall
Given that a POS like the Prius was never appealing in the first place the answer to the question is of course no.
Joseph G I keep hearing about a lot of very expensive Tesla repairs.
I think this is the best looking model yet. The profile looks sleek. Idk what he is talking about. Its the cvt... that turned people off. Lower oil prices as well.
Why can’t you get any good features with the awd model?!
Because Toyota logic 😂😂
Would take a new insight over this any day of the week...
Never honda again for me!
So it has AWD that's really only effective up to 6mph. Just buy a regular one and get snow tires. What a waste
"Time to give this car a Doug Sc - I mean RPM rating"
Awesome Review Of 2019 Toyota Prius. 😀
We have a 2016 prius and it has it has power adjustment for the driver side
My old Audi A2 diesel used to get 48mpg no matter how you drove it, plus it was waaaay better looking, more premium, more practical and smaller. How is this moving the game on?
(Spoiler alert: its not)

Right?! I’ve seen worse looking cars.
MsRose00 like the bmw i3
I don't understand why everyone shits on the Prius so much.
The Prius Prime gets better mpg and is cheaper after the rebate.
If it can do donuts in the snow, I'm sold
Front looks better, but can't believe they got rid of the taillights.... they were one of the coolest taillights on the market, new one has no design at all...
Previous rear lights look better imo
Y’all get use to it when you’re uber driver picks you up from now on.
Wouldn’t even accept this as a rental or loaner.
I own two second Gen Priuses (2007 and 2009). In some aespects, the second generation is better designed than 3rd and 4th. I’m more conservative in terms of design. I was thinking of buying a third generation, but in the second generation I somehow feel better. The fourth generation is too weird for me, the redesign has improved it a bit and it looks nicer.
this car is like the king of the toyota cars.
Okay. The new ones look so good to me. Idk why people hate them so much. I guess I'm just insane. Hate the tires tho. But I really really like the new ones.
I don't think it looks too bad,it grew on me.
I LOVE the way the 2016-2018 model looks, but HATE the way the facelifted model works.
We have had 2 prius'. a 2015 2, (not so great), and a '17 prius 3 touring. The '17 is the best all 'round car we have owned...it does everything well...quite a feat! Thanks.
Honda Insight looks 5x better than this.
Bought one of these. Put a 8 inch lift on it with 31 A/T tires. Still getting 52 MPG average.
Yeah, I think I'd still go for the Ioniq. Current model fully loaded gets better MPG 55/54 or base at 57/55. Plus it looks much better and the 2020 refresh is even more attractive.
Huyndai's reliability is below sea level. So go for it if it doesn't botheryou...
I had a 2005 Hyundai Elantra and the chassis rusted in each quadrant at 70k miles and the entire car bottomed out going out over a railroad track. Fully bottomed out. The body.fell.off.the.chassis. I had to pay $75 to have it towed and cubed. Good old upstate NY weather vs. garbage cars. Then my husband bought a Kia Sorrento & his problems were even worse, lol.
The further I get into this review, the more this car pisses me off.
Same here man!!!! I stopped listening at around 2 minutes.... luckily the phone rang and I didn't even bother to paus the vid.... soooooooooooooooo not intrested in that shitbox of a car!
V12S65AMG I’m such a fan of Sofyan I touched it out. He always does such a good job that even if it’s a shitty car, I’ll typically watch it all. But I don’t blame you one bit for not finishing it! Lol
Just get the Camry Hybrid SE way more power
No AWD. If live in Phoenix or LA, sure go ahead. I love being able to punch it on wet roads in my AWD RAV4 with no wheel spin.
How do you find these year for year sales on these cars? I would to see these stats
Not Royal Skyline google
There is a you tube video on this.
Wanna hear a joke?
People who still make Prius jokes.
Toyota believes hybrid is the near future and fuel cell is the future. That’s where they’re putting their R&D money right now. They cite many valid reasons why all-electric isn’t a good business model for them and they’ve chosen to go in a different direction. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Fun fact the Prius is all made in japan!
Bingo!
The only thing I like about this car is the red metallic color, fuel economy, LED fog lights that's about it.🤔🤷♂️
The problem with the most recent generation of the Prius is that Toyota over-designed it style wise.
I would buy this Prius. Great on gas and AWD plus Toyota's last forever.
Well said.
Bought one. Firt stop to fill up after 820 km. 4.7 l/100 km. My total average fuel since we bought it is 5.4 l/100 km. We live in canada Quebec. Cant wait to test the AWD in the winter.

The Prius line is one of the ugliest production car lines of the last 25 years. It amazes me that people would drive a car as ugly as a Prius just to save a few hundred dollars a year in petrol.
The tail lights/back end of this refresh look MUCH better than the 2016-2018 Prius. The pre-refresh was the ugliest new car you could buy IMO. This isn't AS bad.
Just add the Acura NSX hybrid engine to this and they would sell millions of them.
A 2.5 second Prius would be awesome.
