  • The Toyota Prius was the world’s first mass produced hybrid car and it still might be the most famous of all time. The nameplate was once synonymous with hybrids, and a symbol of the automotive future. But now sales of the Prius are falling as it has become a victim of a changing market and perhaps, its own success.

    • @rondhole
      @rondhole 4 года назад +18

      Some pass 500k miles in original battery but still less than 12 years old. I believe it is more about aging and temperature range where you live. In hot weather, it died faster, about 12 years. In cold and mild weather, it tends to last much longer, more than 15 years.

      @@igorrosales1799 Prius in average last about 10 years in really hot weather. But if you park it on the shade or garage, it will last really long. When you drive it, Prius AC is really strong and has no problem with cooling. The main problem is the aging in hot temperature when you park it. it is even worse if you buy EV like Nissan Leaf or VW Golf with air cooling. Get only with active liquid cooling. Tesla, Bolt, BMW i.3, etc. But small Turbo charge engine will not last either, way shorter than prius lifespan.

      I live in the midwest and an all electric vehicle would be useless as an only vehicle. Even at 400 miles between charges that isn't enough. It is not unreallistic here to drive most of a day to reach somewhere. And most of that driving is in the in the middle of nowhere and even the towns that you do find do not have charging stations. Only the largest towns have a charging station and even those are way too slow, you don't have that much time to stop.

      Batteries fail, but not often at all. Turns out they are pretty sturdy. The batteries are always kept between 40% - to 80% of charge, the charging and discharging process is always very closely monitored by the vehicle. These batteries last a long time, and when they fail, it is about 1k€ to replace. If a turbo on your conventional car fails, that is likely to be more expensive. Transmission or clutch might be even worse. The Toyota/ Lexus hybrids don't have any of that.

      @Carl James Sarcasm my good man. CA gas is taxed nearly 50 cents a gallon as of July 2019. Prices are high already and they require seasonal blends that supposedly burn cleaner based on temperature, which gives the oil industry more opportunities to jack up prices. The State looks at the cars clogging the streets and freeways as cash cows 💰🐮 (rather than constituents in need of relief).
      They know residents are mentally resigned to high and changing prices. They always get ready tax increases for various “reasons” and implement them at will. Residents go about their hamster wheel existences of “happiness” not realizing they are getting fleeced more each day.
      You’ll see them speak so fervently about high prices, while silently raising taxes. They nearly never back off (expire, recall) taxes either, just instal more. They have more than enough to govern the state, but governance is not the goal. Corrupt they become. Devious they are. Therefore, “smart but crooked”; devious and corrupt.
      Side note, CA state masters (who long to be masters of the country and the world) stoke the primal fears of residents all day by incessant propaganda to manifest their self-imposed role as savior or deity. Good wise people are shuttered, the masses suffer. Yay, California!

Not to mention their boot capacity (or shall I say trunk space) are way bigger! Also they're still safer cars in real life, NOT in crash test labs. Also, their "EV only range" (and yes that includes Volvo XC90 T8) embarrassed Prius big time until Toyota re-designed their new plug-in Prius.
      That's not all, Honda Insight beats Prius in performance due to limited EV range / performance boast on the Toyota. Also the price tag of the way cheaper than the Prius. I was so close to buying a Prius but wound up getting a 2017 Toyota Camry. Toyota is the BEST car on the road. Reliable, long lasting, cost effective, and efficient. I had an 87 Camry last 338K miles. Eventually I’m going to buy a Prius but I need a better current design. The older model Prius looks better than the current models.

      I agree with you, Toyota makes the best cars in the world. They hold up extremely well over time if taken care of. I have a 2009 Yaris, which I've owned since new. It's an el cheapo economy car. However, after ten years, the interior is holding up amazingly well. No squeaks or rattles, no falling down headliner, the carpet is in perfect condition, no fading plastics. It still looks like brand new. I want to learn how to drive stick, so I'm looking into buying a new manual Corolla next year as a second car (I'm never selling my Yaris). I don't need a second car, but I like Toyota so much that I want another one. I'm with you on the older Prius looking better. I'm not a fan of the current design, either.

      @@falcongamer58 There will be no reprecussions because batteries can be recycled. These are valuable and no one is just going to toss them out. FCV's are very inefficient, they have the same well-to-wheel efficiency as normal gas hybrids. About 19-23% of the energy put into producing and transporting hydrogen actually makes it to the drive train of the car. BEV's are about 60% efficient on grid electricity.

      Yes diesel, thanks to Tier 4 emission compliance, you are a joke now. Your real world up front investment plus operating cost per mile for whatever new vehicle you are put in is worse than that of any half assed made gasser.
      Especially now that manufactures like Ford are rolling out 7.3l Turbo gassers that do just short to f 500 HP @ 1000+ Ft/Lbs of torque while costing $10K less up front and having far lower long term operating cost per mile than you ALL while having about the same or better real world fuel costs per mile numbers too. :(
