I think the major issue for CA is that they want to have an average play session be a certain number of turns rather then a certain number of battles. Having larger and larger unit counts corresponds to longer and longer battles which just goes counter to how their games are designed.
Ca doesn't want to go that route. They're not interested in true strategic depth inside their battles unfortunately. And even with mods, the older games are handicapped by their tiny map sizes. I recommend something like Grand Tactician: Civil War. No eye candy like Total war but at least you'll have real time battles with real strategic elements.
@@Ariaelyne I remember modifying my Medieval II Total War to maximum unit counts. 250 for infantry, 150 for cavalry, and 100 for artillery, bodyguards, and other small units. Every single siege battle took at least an hour. The campaign was moving too slowly because of that. I reinstalled the file and was happy about much faster gameplay with vanilla maximum unit size. I mean... yeah, it would be so cool to have two armies 100k men each fighting each other in the game, but... the gameplay would take too much time.
@@cpp3221 It is not perfect but it is a good first step. The game is unstable with FCN's unit numbers and Frame rate can tank, but it is one of the best mods out there for Napoleon
This is a strange statement cause it's not like CA has ever timed their games with big Hollywood productions (Rome came out 5 years after Gladiator for instance), and it's not like Hollywood is churning out historical epics on the regular. The only reason Napoleon's getting made is cause Apple has FU money to throw around as they're trying to break into a space usually held by the big studios.
We need an empire 2 that includes the conflicts of NA as well as depicting historical European conflicts in the later game. Was disappointed to get to 1805-1815 and have no Napoleon in sight. Also really pissed me off that as the US the AI won't do historically accurate trades and events for the US. I had all of Mexico, Canada, and South America before I actually got France to give up Louisiana by trading regions that were way in their favour.

I understand that there are people with various tastes, but it is kind of hard to understand why CA isn't making sequels of their most successful series.
why would you want them to? the people that work there now have no clue about any of the "older" total war games all they know how to do is cut up the game into tiny bits of DLC and somehow make the animations worse than a 19 year old game
a) They have a huge cash cow right now in the fantasy Warhammer games b) As Buzzing said, the people running CA right now would probably eff up Medieval 3 or Empire 2 pretty bad. And they would make it $200 with all the damn DLC.
Modern CA does not know how to do the things Old CA used to do. They couldn't do gunpowder units right for TW:Warhammer III even. They couldn't animate gunpowder and artillery units correctly. They still can't do naval warfare. All the money they've milked from TW:WH with countless DLCs. They literally whored out Pirate Factions for TW:WH and "naval" battles magically turn into land battles. Gunpowder units in TW:WH have none of the firing drills such as done in Empire, Shogun 2, etc. The last time CA did a good, well rounded TW game with all the features we've come to expect out of the franchise was Shogun 2. That game came out in 2011. Modern CA doesn't know how to do this stuff anymore.
I've been playing TW since Medieval I and honestly I feel like these critiques are a little harsh. They've definitely gone hard on DLC and I can't honestly understand why we can just get a straight historical game out of them any more, but there's still some great games mechanically if you're willing to dig past some of the fluff of Three Kingdoms and Rome 2 etc.
I find it actually pretty good that they try to cover different time periods instead of taking the same setting over and over again. They just fail to deliver by taking away many things oldschool fans liked best about total war games.
I still remember 10 years ago. My army was out numbered on top of a small hill. I pushing a few units of line infantry out on a flank seemingly unsupported. The enemy lancers saw an easy meal and charged in. Only for the infantry to take up square formation and route them. Now having the cavalry advantage on the field I charged the enemy guns with my dragoons and then took out the enemy general. My main body of line infantry then bayonet charged down the hill and routed the enemy army. Epic battles. Even when your army was attacked by two fully stacked enemy armies. you knew if you played your cards right still had a chance.
Playing this made me understand why revolutionary war era battles were fought in the way they were. Long thin battle lines prevent flanks, decrease groupings for canons, and increase your firing cone. It’s pretty cool to learn while you play.
And tight formations reduced vulnerability to cavalry charges, which still represented a huge threat at this time. If it wasn't for cavalry, I'm sure they would have fought far more spaced out.
Its for sure the best game in total war. and has so many mechanics that should have stayed, from taking cover behing walls, to the dynamic nature of artilery not being OP but being devastating in the right setting, to having occupyable buildings, meaning that even militias could hold off elite troops. The battlefields were so dynamic because of this and totalwar has never gotten close since.
i remember holding a small Russian town against Napoleons main army, critically fighting street to street, being far outnumbered by the French troops, and at the most critical moment by pure luck, napoleon himself stumbled upon a Landswehr regiment down one alley, and their volley wounded him, crushing the French morale and ultimately leading to a defensive victory! That battle was probably a good 10 years ago, yet i still remember it. i miss the old CA days

Improvements over Empire TW: 1) France and Spain split into smaller provinces. 2) Superior historical accuracy re: Uniforms 3) Historical Generals (At least for the main factions) 4) The mechanic of switching ministers around, much smoother.
I've always felt a little let down by the game, specifically the lack of campaigns. This could have been a great source of income for CA in DLCs. I mean imagine an 1812 DLC, an 1809 DLC, 1813 Battle of the Nations DLC. Opportunity wasted. The mod La Montee de L'Empire somewhat addressed this to a degree. However I do wish the mod Napoleonic Total war III would give us more options in that regard. I really hope they make a sequel, I love this era and have been fascinated with this period for years. The thing about naval combat, at least in my campaigns, was that there were a few really big important battles early on and then you'd blockade the enemy ports with a fleet just big enough to take on what they could build in one turn. Naval research then wasn't all that important as there would normally not be another big battle. The other trick was to use a tiny fast fleet to sneak a huge army to, for example, Cyprus or England.

Just played this last night for the first time in ages, and it holds up beautifully. The historical battles are excellent and so atmospheric. Not to mention the multiple campaigns. This is a game that deserves a remaster if they don’t want to make an Empire 2.
I think a Napoleon 2 would be a missed opportunity, I'd personally want to see a game encompassing both empire and Napoleon in a new map. Though it would also be a miss to not recreate peninsular campaign and the Napoleon campaign and battles. Easily my favourite TW game genre, option to play both large or small maps for all levels of brain activity. Darthmod was great, it still works for empire at least. But I think a medieval 3 would be a great move for CA first, to draw more attention to historical games with a map comparable to the stainless steel mod for Medieval 2, or the 1212AD for atilla, I think it would capture some of the warhammer playerbase.
They really missed a Golden opportunity that when you play one of The Coalition country's and you defeat Napoleon,.. you should have to fight him one last Battle at Waterloo,. : ( That would have been Insane~
I think Napoleon is my personal favourite - the design is fantastic with each faction having their own uniforms and troop rosters. The different ships were an awesome improvement too. This made each faction feel unique unlike in Empire which was pretty much "pick your colour" (aside from the Muslim and Maratha factions of course). I JUST wish the map could be imported from Empire with an ability to play all the factions and that would make it the perfect TW game for me. There is something glorious about conquering the world for Denmark or Oldenburg 😍🥰😂
One thing I never liked about ETW and NTW is the lack of fog of war on the battle maps. Without fog of war, you can see where all of your enemy's units are and vice versa, so it's practically impossible to achieve surprise.
Well... about the AI... I remember in Empire TW, I had a battleship and attacked a Pirate Frigate. She went into the aft blindspot and stayed there, using an advantage in speed, shooting salvos at BS's aft, until she was destroyed. I needed to reload and add another ship, so they could cover each other's backs.
They have the ability to make both eras playable in one game. They could cover the latter end of the medieval age all the way up to the late 19th century
@@spiffygonzales5160You're absolutely right! We cannot be sure of anything with sequels, especially knowing how they're making the latest games. Remakes are way safer. (Napoleon is near perfect though, just needs bug fixes and a better campaign AI and it's just fine for me)
This is the latest Total War I can genuinely enjoy, and I’ve played it for about 2000 hours or so. It’s insane and probably somewhat unhealthy. But starting with Rome 2, the Total Wars fell tragically short for me from unit cards to diplomacy to… Everything. Not being able to split armies at will, is such a stupid move for example… So to this day I replay Rome, Medieval and Napoleon, and it keeps being a blast. It truly was the golden age of Total War games.
AI pb is solve by playing multiplayer. It's the real strength of this game as there is a pretty active multiplayer community, especially for playing land battles. It's almost like this title was built for MP : it's balanced and simple, not an overwhelming quantity of unit types that make you wonder what your opponent has brought on the battlefield, battles more focused on moral and strategic placement than on micro management and unit quality, a smaller scale campaign map perfect for quick versus campaign that won't take you a month to finish. (since there is no more chat in-game, rules are set in the game's name. Beginners be aware of this, and you can pass your mouse over the name to read it completely)
Imagine a remade version of this, or hell even something like a US civil war, WWI, or another empire/revolutionary war game with modern tech. I would kill for something like that now, or a LotR one. I like 'em, but ther's been a lot of focus on fantasy titles, and niche ones like Pharaoh that don't end up doing as well.
CA should, if they care about their fanbase (esp. the old one), definitely make either Napoleon Total War 2 or Empire 2 Total War next. Why they chose to make a Pharaoh game is beyond me. Haven't bought a historical TW game since RTW2, which sadly itself was a let down and a sign of things to come. Hopefully they will at some point go back to their roots of making highly realistic historical titles, and focus on quality & realism rather than the increasingly arcade & fantasy route they've been pushing for the last decade.
Pharao exists because it uses the foundations of Troyes. It's basically a reskin + some new features, it's really cheap for them to make this game and buys them time to prepare for an other major title. Also I think Pharao is a great choice. It's true that few people will be interested in this time period and I'm not particularly into it myself, but I understand that for others it's really nice to get a Total War covering this era as there isn't any yet. Empire and Medieval already have games. It's nice from CA to please everyone, at least with a large offer covering multiple time periods.
One of my favorite games. Definitely a top TW game. I’ll always remember an epic battle I won where I was outnumbered 3:1 and won because I moved my forces into a canyon and was able to bottle neck my enemy. I sent two cavalry units to take out the enemy artillery, a crucial mission that they succeeded at great cost. Square formation in the canyon obliterated their cavalry. It was an amazing edge of my seat battle.
This is the best total war game, and I love all of them having played each of them only 2-5 years after release + numerous patches and mods. Shogun 2 is awesome, but it isn't as good as NTW with NTW3 or DarthMod NTW/Field Command Napoleon mods for gunpowder gameplay or even just proper, tactical battles that take time and maneuvering to resolve. Just need NTW in a more stable/modern engine and overall tweaks/improvements across the board.
I remember me on the first battle that i had in the austria-campaign: Ich let my infantry fix bajonets first but i forgot one crucial thing: There were no ring-bayonets that time so my infantry was meely only after that point. So i had no choice to charge the austrians. My troops were gunned down, it was a mess. I had not expected that CA was going that deep in the weaponry of that time.
The first game I played, I was the English, and I invaded France with a big army. I took the western most province, and hunkered down waiting for huge Napoleonic armies to bear down on me. Napoleon, that crafty genius, did the one thing I didn't expect: he ignored me. Half of France gone, but he would rather invade Russia or something. I can't remember what happened next: I don't recall capturing Paris, but logically that should have come next to see if Nappy would continue his "Le Shrug" strategy. But it limited my interest in the game and I rarely played it over the years.
I was playing with DarthMod (single player Italian campaign/40 units save) last week with no issue, actually. Beside that 10/10 for the video and for the game, best TW ever played and such a shame we’re not getting a new one
still cant believe everyone and i mean everyone was asking for a new medieval total war or a pike and shot or even a new empire or napoleon. But no CA just did their own thing.....again. Im convinced they just hate us now. Either that or every single dev that made the games we love is no longer at the company
The game is amazing and the Multi player is also amazing clan vs clan epic battles. I remeber very fondly playing this game in my youth and I look forward to playing it agian very soon.
For me, being old time player - actually playing TW series since first Shogun - and bit of the history fanatical, Napoleon is absolutely one of the top strategy games ever. And I guess it is one of the best of Total War series as well, at least for me, maybe together with Shogun 2... and maybe Rome 1 or 2 (hard to say). Im not touching new Pharaoh with the stick.
Partly due to the new movie I'm reading alot of napoleon wars and playing the Europe campaign. Having fun right now and wish we could get a new empire total war.
Love your videos! Glad you posted a new one. Random idea for a cool video or series of videos---what if you did a spotlight on a specific modder or modding team? Or an interview with one of them? You could even start with The Duke (currently my favorite modder and the friendliest one I've come across) He's cooked up a new mod for Napoleon in addition to his previous ones for Warhammer, Three Kingdoms, and others, and he may be starting to look into modding Rome 2. Just an idea :)
It's still the total war I enjoy the most! If they'd update empire to the polished state of napoleon, it might take its throne, and in fact every title between medieval 2 and rome 2 was pretty nice, but as highlighted in the video, the visuals and the gunpowder era are just amazing. Only the restricted map (at least north africa would have been nice) and the ai in siege battles are slight drawbacks.
Me and my friend just started playing a darthmod europe campaign the other day and honestly we have had basically no problems. Im not knocking what your saying but im curious as to why it still works for us. Keep in mind that we are both post ca update as well. Only thing i noticed was the muskets and cannon sounds were different.
@@TheTerminatorGamingdamn I'm sorry to hear that it doesn't work for ya. But appreciate the happiness for me and my friend. 😊. I was curious btw if you ever plan to review la montee de lempire mod. @TheTerminatorGaming EXCELLENT. Very excited to see it when it comes out! But no rush man. Just glad to have you uploading bout mod news in general. Happy gaming dude.
If only they made North Africa, with a strong Barbary states and finished playable ottomans. Also weird how the cut out so much of Northern Europe. Battles and empire managing are amazing and lot better then empire. Austria campaign on higher difficulty is a very interesting challenging 2 front war with unique Hungary units that are strong in melee so you have to take care to charge in too which is awesome, obviously
Great review and video! Timing is good as well. I'm coming back to this game because of the Napoleon movie trailer and the video just highlights so many cool things about it. I wish we could get a remaster or NTW2 from CA. Tho I must say I'm happy with the NTW3 mod and darthmod :D
@@TheTerminatorGaming it depends. Sometimes it bugs out, glitches and other times it runs okay. NTW3 I had less problems with. Been a while since I've played them. Just installed and played vanilla NTW :)
@@TheTerminatorGaming I was completely unaware that Darthmod was not compatible with the latest NTW update and so i installed it because thats the one i used for ETW, and i havent had any issues, i was surprised when u said that it was incompatible, maybe thats only true for multiplayer? europe campaign runs fine for me, just some audio bugs here and there.
If you have any compatibility problems with a mod, as long as you don't have 12th gen+ cpu, you can revert to a mac beta on steam, which is a pre update version (it also still has chat)
Napoleon is my favourite total war, side with Shogun 2. But even so, i would be more happy if they decided to make Empire 2 Total War, because i think that game had potential which was not fullified while Napoleon is good game.
What really bothers me about the update that broke darthmod (besides that) is that they exchanged the gun sounds with those from shogun 2. I think the old ones fitted better to the animations and the era.
Anyone play the base game on steam deck? What was you overall view and did you need to download third party software such proton experimental to play it.
I'm still not convinced. I never really played grand campaign (only 2 first Napoleonic). You get smaller map, basically same set of units (maybe even less as some fractions are missing), same gameplay, less technology. Only good thing is better graphics. Or maybe I'm missing something?
Any tips for mods for a multiplayer campaign? I tried tw3 and darthmod but both crashed a lot and buggy. I really just wanted the extra smoke with gun fire haha

I needed to reload and add another ship, so they could cover each other's backs.
i’m begging for ca to make another gunpowder era game (revolutionary or civil war era would be epic)
They have the ability to make both eras playable in one game. They could cover the latter end of the medieval age all the way up to the late 19th century
Just remaster Empire and Napoleon already
Preach it!
+1
I honestly want this even more than an empire 2 or Napoleon 2. They'd mess up a sequel. But a remaster? I could see a remaster doing alright.
@@spiffygonzales5160You're absolutely right! We cannot be sure of anything with sequels, especially knowing how they're making the latest games. Remakes are way safer. (Napoleon is near perfect though, just needs bug fixes and a better campaign AI and it's just fine for me)
Always wanted the Empire Grand campaign to have been in Napoleon
Greatest game ever, truly amazing what they have achieved with this. Historically correct as well.
This is the latest Total War I can genuinely enjoy, and I’ve played it for about 2000 hours or so. It’s insane and probably somewhat unhealthy. But starting with Rome 2, the Total Wars fell tragically short for me from unit cards to diplomacy to… Everything. Not being able to split armies at will, is such a stupid move for example…
So to this day I replay Rome, Medieval and Napoleon, and it keeps being a blast. It truly was the golden age of Total War games.
Attila wasn’t bad either but I can see why it wasn’t as popular as Rome II.
To me map size was a MAJOR turn-off. So much that I've never really played it except for testing. I spent 10x more time in Empire.
Couldn't agree more!
Look up grand Tactician The Civil War.
Hey Terminator, long time fan here. Love to see your production wuality rising up, this one is one of your best imo. Great editing !
Hey man thank you! ❤️
Oh shoot, I didn't even know about the Napoleon movie until now. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the little general himself? This sounds amazing.
1:36 "Help the spanish" 💀
3,527 hrs in this game... still don't understand why CA hasn't givven us a sequel... by far my favorite in the franchise
Ah yeah others have been telling me. I haven’t gotten it to work yet so need to investigate
still cant believe everyone and i mean everyone was asking for a new medieval total war or a pike and shot or even a new empire or napoleon. But no CA just did their own thing.....again. Im convinced they just hate us now. Either that or every single dev that made the games we love is no longer at the company
Great video as always. NTW is probably the oldest TW I return to frequently. Though I prefer playing as the Brit in Sandbox.
Aw man I’ve just finished my Napoleon playthrough, might have to do a Brits campaign stream!
@@TheTerminatorGaming if you've ever read the Bernard Cornwall Sharpe series, playing as the Brits is an especial blastm
GOOD OLD GAME! Hope CA will come back to masterpieces like this or Attila
Imagine a new TW Napoleon game where you can have 10s of thousands of soldiers, hollyyyyyy what a game I would buy it for 200 Dollars
I remember recruiting the 95th Rifles in this game and thinking to myself "Sharpe!"
Great video mate. Be sure to check out the FCN mod for no particular reason ;)
❤️❤️❤️
When seeing this I'm just sad modern historical TW games are about sticks & bows. Why can't we have nice things?
Multiplayer in this game was amazing, i played for years since release
We need a game with Empire's scale, and Napoleon's gameplay.
I love the sound of 12 pounders in the morning.
The game is amazing and the Multi player is also amazing clan vs clan epic battles. I remeber very fondly playing this game in my youth and I look forward to playing it agian very soon.
What is the best mod for this game? And could you provide a bit of a summary what makes it great. Please
I play as the British in the coalition campaign and omg it’s tough. Just stack after stack after stack. Like it’s broken.
I still played Darthmod on empire also Napoleon it’s still works
Partly due to the new movie I'm reading alot of napoleon wars and playing the Europe campaign. Having fun right now and wish we could get a new empire total war.
Have they fixed the issues that arose with ships not being able to “beach land” troops on campaign?
Just bought it for $6 yesterday. Its 75% off on steam.
FYI Lme4 is a great single player mod for this one check it out if you haven’t already
LME?
Does it work after all the CA "patching"?
i just thought the attrition mechanics were badass. first tw game where you actually had to plan you campaign to the weather and geography.
Deleting the chat killed my multiplayer experience
An immortal and well-crafted classic
Playing this because of the hype for the upcoming Napoleon movie later this year, great game.
We deserve an Empire map in Napoleon
Love your videos! Glad you posted a new one. Random idea for a cool video or series of videos---what if you did a spotlight on a specific modder or modding team? Or an interview with one of them? You could even start with The Duke (currently my favorite modder and the friendliest one I've come across) He's cooked up a new mod for Napoleon in addition to his previous ones for Warhammer, Three Kingdoms, and others, and he may be starting to look into modding Rome 2. Just an idea :)
Thanks! Great idea :)
Thanks you for giving this game the praises it deserves !
An important fact is that none of the major factions in the main campaign are locked behind DLC!
I think the draw distance is terrible in napoleon and empire. Do you have any fix for this?
If they do a remaster version, I'm in.
This game got me into Total War.
And it's still one of the best
Me and my friend just started playing a darthmod europe campaign the other day and honestly we have had basically no problems. Im not knocking what your saying but im curious as to why it still works for us. Keep in mind that we are both post ca update as well. Only thing i noticed was the muskets and cannon sounds were different.
Hmmm hasn’t been working for me. I’ll dig into it though good to hear it works for you :)
@@TheTerminatorGaming
Works perfect for me as well !
@@TheTerminatorGamingdamn I'm sorry to hear that it doesn't work for ya. But appreciate the happiness for me and my friend. 😊. I was curious btw if you ever plan to review la montee de lempire mod. I actually am quite curious about it but don't wanna sacrifice darthmod for it if it doesn't actually work or any of that stuff. Just a thought. Love the vids m8. Cheers.
LME is defo on the plans ❤️
@TheTerminatorGaming EXCELLENT. Very excited to see it when it comes out! But no rush man. Just glad to have you uploading bout mod news in general. Happy gaming dude.
NTW is still pretty much the only game I play. Nothing has topped it for me.
Is this the kind of total war to deploy with mods, overhaul or other wise? Was Darthmod ever repaired?
Honestly i like Napoleon, but i feel like it removed a lot from empire that should seriously be brought back
If only they made North Africa, with a strong Barbary states and finished playable ottomans.
You get Darthmod to work?
And thank you! Appreciate the kind words ❤️
I love the Napoleonic Era and i love this game
I wonder if I enable the version with up to 40 units. Will the previous campaigns be deleted just because I activated the 40 units moved? 😬
Won’t get deleted but you won’t be able to play them with 40 units
Napoleon is my favourite total war, side with Shogun 2. But even so, i would be more happy if they decided to make Empire 2 Total War, because i think that game had potential which was not fullified while Napoleon is good game.
Funny you decided to make this video. Seeing the movie trailer inspired me to dust off total war Napoleon and am still happy with the game.
I know right! Same here and have been loving it
God damn it now I have to play a whole new campaign on Napoleon ;)
Darthmod is still playable you just need to use the Mac version, i still play it to this day
I still think the best gun TW game is Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai. Just because how realistic and staggering rifles can be.
What really bothers me about the update that broke darthmod (besides that) is that they exchanged the gun sounds with those from shogun 2. I think the old ones fitted better to the animations and the era.
Not to mention removing chat for no reason
CA please make a Civil War Total War that would be so fun a full game teaching about the war
But why did they removed the chat function? 😢😢😢😢
Anyone play the base game on steam deck? What was you overall view and did you need to download third party software such proton experimental to play it.
This makes me crave for a new total war in this age....
It's a great game, but if you want black powder game play, i would always advocate for Fall of the Samurai over Nap
One thing i dont like is the latest patch broke my musket sound mod from working in darthmod
Try FCN?
