    I had dinner today at the Norman Wisdom on Queen st! The old town is just gorgeous, reminds me of Appledore in Devon. It’s a beautiful walk down the coast path to Kingsdown, my favourite beach in Kent, so quiet, uncrowded, a lovely view of the channel and has 2 pubs right on the beach!

      🙏 Thanks Lucieni; Deal is rather unique, and it's that thing I love about the Kent Coastline is the differences in all the different towns & villages. One of those things we've planned for the coming weeks is exploring a few of the hidden gems along the coastline, the places that don't get as many visits, but still worth checking out.
      Thanks so much for your comment, stay safe, stay well and keep enjoying Kent, we're lucky to live in a county like this.
      Cheers Gary & Janis

    The south east coast was my fishing stomping ground early 70s Deal pier was a cod fishing mecca always loved Deal as it reminds me of the great times i had there with my bro and dad . Live in the south of France now doubt i'll live to see it again thanks for the upload ?

      So glad you enjoyed it. It's still popular with the sea anglers, but not sure if the cod is so abundant these days. We were at Folkestone on Wednesday, and there was a lot of activity off the harbour arm - did you ever fish there? Also, intrigued, which part of the south of France? We love France and have travelled through a lot of the country, love the regionality. We'd often be there this time of year too.

    Been looking at the Thanet towns and Folkestone to live but I looked at Deal and I’m in love! It’s got the coolness of Margate and the arty charm of Folkestone, not far from Canterbury and an hour away from London, safe to say I’m moving there in September

      That's such good news; I hope the move goes well.
      We love all of those Kent coastal towns for the reasons you mentioned. They're all subtly different, and we like them for their differences.
      When we got our new car in May, Deal was the place we chose to come to for a quick drive and fish 'n' chips by the sea: just perfect.
      Anyway, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment,
      All the best for the future.

      It's been years since I've been to Southend, wonder how much it's changed. I'd be interested if there's somewhere like Deal on the Essex coast - perhaps we have to head up to Walton-on-the-Naze? I've no idea, must take a look sometime soon.

    A lovely town as I remember it. Stayed there during the summer in 1968, 1969 and 1970 for about 2 month each time. After that I made a few short visit. After that Deal has always been in my heart. Maybee I should go there for one more visit, and remeber a nice part of my youth.

    I lived in deal for around 10 - 11 years as a kid. Growing up is realising that there isnt much actually special about it, nor was it a particularly great area. I suppose I only had nearby Thanet and Dover to compare it to, which makes Deal look kind of like heaven. Theres certainly some roughish areas, but overall its not really that bad either, a pretty average town. Ive always lived in seaside towns, and ive always loved the beach.
    I can remember going to the Sugar Boy on a school trip, eating some sweets on the beach while watching a man fish up dozens of dogfish under the pier. I also have much more recent memories as a teenager, getting some chippy with my friends, and chucking some stones into the sea, seeing who could throw them the furthest. I think its lucky that Deal never really became a town entirely reliant on tourism and people going there on holiday, because it never ended up becoming as ruined as Thanet is.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  Год назад +1

      Hi,
      Thanks for the comment; you were lucky to grow up by the seaside. It's amazing how many Brits don't have access to it, or it was/is just a memorable holiday.
      I think the Kent Coastline is fantastic, from Dungeness all the way around to, say, Allhallows (but I guess that is the Thames estuary). There are so many different and really quite unique places now, and Deal has its own identity.
      You're right; Deal didn't have the same mass tourism, no penny arcades or holiday homes (no golden sand either), and that made it richer back then, as it is today.
      And there is nothing better than fish 'n' chips by the seaside, especially if you defeat the seagulls.
      Anyway, thanks for taking the time to comment,
      All the best,
      Gary & Janis

      🙏Thanks so much Linda, an absolute pleasure 😍 I try to match the music to the scene (I say I try, not sure I always get it right - especially in the early days). Deal is fabulous; you really should take a look, grab a portion of chips and defend yourself against the seagulls 😲

      Its my pleasure to watch your newly found channel, the music was good, use some more classical for your ancient towns, the chips idea is making me hungry and being an animal lover I would gladly feed the seagulls, they need our help, obviously hungry, we take all their food, shows how desperate they are.....take care shall watch more@@OurWorldForYou

  • @MrTorleon

    Very pleasant video BUT I hope you won`t mind me pointing out some important history about Deal not mentioned here. The older part of Deal hides the fact that this was a smuggler town, and quite a number of the houses have subterranean connections, so if the Customs and Excise chaps were close on your heals, smugglers could dissapear into one house, but exit from another - it was all about survival in hard times.
    I recall that there were available - in past years, a few tours down these clever escape tunnels :)
    Visitors should also be aware that it can be quite chilly around Deal, with an often cool breeze blowing off the Channel. Stone beaches equal fossils and crystals - to pass some time !

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 года назад

      🙏 Thank you - now that's an interesting fact, and one we'll pick up on future videos, because the tradition of trying to beat the excise men is one that fascinates us, especially the gangs that made it their job to smuggle, a good example is the Hawkhurst gang - you can probably tell where our travels will take us later this year 😀

    • @MrTorleon
      @MrTorleon 3 года назад +1

      @@OurWorldForYou Thank you so much for not minding me offering a few historical facts here and there - once a a historian, always a historian, but not everyone is so appreciative :(
      It was all about survival. I have ancestors who lived in a small coastal village in Anglesy, North Wales, and it is a known fact that they ' shipwrecked ' vessels by lighting false harbour lights to drive ships on to the rocks, and turning off the South Stack Lighthouse - a wild piece of coastline in every sense.
      Thank you once again for these wonderful tours - I am most appreciative :)

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 года назад

      I think all of coastal England played the same games, I know the Cornish & Devonians were very skilled in bringing ships to the rocks. It would be nice to have a portal to view back into those times, I guess shocking would be the word.
