    Great video, Drew. Another analogy for the charging curve is to think of a glass of water. You can open a tap fully when the glass is empty, and you need to reduce the flow as the glass is close to full.

    In Australia many EVs use LFP blade cell batteries. Each cell is about 1.2m long mounted crosswise. They are formatted 126S1P typically into 400V (nom) 62KWhr battery. The battery is liquid cooled on the topside.
    The batteries are simple (just 126 cells) are quite light, and have considerable structural strength (the pack forms a torsion box).
    The running performance is very good and the batteries are proving very reliable in service, suffering very little degradation.
    Howeever, they are limited in fast charge rate. In more expensive vehicles like Teslas, typically to 120KW. The less expensive compact vehicles like BYD are typically limited to 85KW. This is a function of cooling system capacity. None of this matters if you mainly charge at home.

    I think a good educational video you could make is explaining the differences between CCS1 and 2 and why we’re abandoning CCS1.

      CCS1 and CCS2 and not even being used in the same country, so no one is abando ing one or the other, they are just used in different countries. CCS1 in America and CCS2 in Europe and most other countries outside of Europe. Hope that helps 🙂

      CCS2 is also being abandoned to NACS. But only in the US. CCS1 was simply too slow, the plug did not allow that many watts.

    Tesla has really been shaking up the backup battery world as of late, you should do a video on the LFP Powerwall 3, the expansion pack, the meter collar transfer switch, etc. It's a really fascinating product (I work in residential solar+backup battery, so I can testify firsthand to it's awesomeness)

    I never understood why the smaller batteries for PHEVs are not using LFP. They have a really rough cycle life and small capacity so they will degrade FAR faster than any BEV (PS: Chevy refused to honor warranty due to degradation on a friends vehicle).
    PS: I really hope the name NACS sticks because it sounds good, is clear (its for north america only due to no 3 phase), its brand agnostic and it sounds a lot better than SAE J3400.

    I've only had one stretch that required me to charge to 100% in order to complete my road trip drive. Vicksburg MS, to Little Rock, took 93% to make the drive back in September. Otherwise 70% is usually the stopping point between charges on most trips

  • @tonydeveyra4611
    @tonydeveyra4611 2 дня назад

    I just went on my first long road trip with extended family, including kids, caravaning in multiple teslas and I ended up charging to 100% a lot more often than normal. After getting to 70% or whatever, the kids would then decide that they had to go pee, or someone would remember they want to grab some snacks. Or whatever else. So what was supposed to be a 15 minute charging stop becomes a 40 minute stop, and we're pushing up the charge limit to maximize use of it.

    Very informative video. Thank you for making one.
    Since I live in the EU is there a chance that you could make a similar video on other markets than the USA? I would appreciate it a lot. If not, do you know if there is that kind of video already made? I haven't been able to find one yet.
    Also another video suggestion: HW changes that have happened in EVs in the recent years. Would be cool to now what model years I should look at when looking for a used EV.

      To the best of my knowledge, all 3 and Y in the US also use NCA battery and not NMC battery. NCA appears to be more energy dense, which will give your vehicle more range. I think 3 and Y made outside US (like China and Germany) have NMC battery instead of NCA

  • @JayCAlan
    @JayCAlan 3 дня назад +1

    Great vid! The most frequent question I got after getting an EV was "how long does it take to charge it from empty to full?" Once you live with an EV, you realize that this question is stupid, because you would never do that. You only ever charge it as much as you need to. Just a different mindset.

    LFP still degrades at 100%, and cycling from 100%-75% is more damage than 100-0%. So definitely worth lowering the charge level depending on how you use the car, as long as you cycle to 100% with some regularity. Tesla said once per week, ford says once per month.

    • @TailosiveEV
      @TailosiveEV  3 дня назад +2

      Degrades at any percentage. But yeah you don’t want to leave it at 100% for long periods. Rest assured LFP cycle life is so high you’ll probably have other issues with the car before it degrades that badly

    I’ve gotta push back on the notion that the new admin’s likely elimination of the EV tax credit will push Tesla to reintroduce foreign-made LFP battery models into the lineup.
    The new admin is *also* likely to increase tariffs on foreign EV batteries. That means that, while the “carrot” to buy NMC will likely go away, there will now instead be a new/increased “stick” to buy LFP.
    The net effect is that the unsubsidized price of new EVs with foreign batteries will simply go up - and the unsubsidized cost for Tesla to build an LFP SR+ model will rise to the point where it approaches the price to build an NMC LR RWD model (and thus I doubt it would be “worth it” to reintroduce the LFP SR+ model).
    The only way I see Tesla going back to LFP is if they can start making LFP batteries cost effectively *in America.*

    • @davewithad4166
      @davewithad4166 3 дня назад

      Not sure if this is correct, but Tesla got some machines from China to make batteries in Nevada and I think they are the LFP. So if they make them in Nevada, even with Chinese tech, they would be exempt from tariffs. That's what I read somewhere anyway. They got the hardware from CATL early last year. Apologies in advance if this is totally wrong. Edit, those batteries may be for megapacks and not for cars.

    i understand *why* youre saying 1865 for the model S/X, but i have never in my life ever heard of them referred to that way, its always 18650. again, i understand *WHY* youre doing it its just weird.
    also, lets hope that your employer, Telo is working on an LFP battery version of the truck

    • @truhartwood3170
      @truhartwood3170 3 дня назад +1

      It seems there's a push to drop the 0 on the end and just call them 1865. The first four are the diameter and length in mm, and the last was a chemistry designation, Li-ion being "0". Since they're all Li-ion now, we don't need the "0", which is why they've left it off of the newer cells and, for consistency, starting to drop it from the 18650s as well.
