excellent video Tim. Everything you guys discussed about moving forward in your careers from the bottom, up. Applies to any worthwhile endeavor. Every young person today should have a complete understanding about this attitude of successful people. This was the best video in your arsenal in my opinion. Thank you very much for all of efforts in doing these videos for RUclips.
Just getting to this video. "Basic Training" is good for everyone! Makes me realize how much better our youth could do with some mandatory service to this great country after finishing high school. Nearly 37 years of US Army active and active reserves as one career coupled with 42 years as an active and reserve LEO on the civilian side for me. I've been blessed and I've worked hard as well. I completely get the apprenticeship or starting from the bottom, to learn and fully understand whatever you're doing. Great interview! Thanks Captain!

Fantastic Chuck and Tim, only complaint I have is why didn’t you let Chuck finish his breakfast before putting him on the spot.. lol Tim you’re the best, keep em coming Capt. 🙂
That was interesting but you should have let Chuck eat first.. poor guy was trying to shovel in food when you were talking and trying real hard when he talked (but not doing very well).. But it was an interesting perspective he brought out.. thanks Tim.. carry on my brother..
I wish we had the scale of tug industry you have here in Australia bring so close to Singapore all our northern work is done by operators from Singapore , I worked with Australia's biggest bunker company until a Singapore company moved in with overseas crews and we were gone .
Thank you for watching Brian. That is terrible! We have the Jones Act which many people don't fully understand, but it protects interstate commerce and keeps US mariners and ship builders working. CUOTO
Great video. I plan to go start out on a tug as a deckhand in a few months after I get my credentials and I hope to work my way up into the wheelhouse from there. Is there anything I should know or do that would help me and my chances of getting a job and climbing up?
Congratulations and welcome! Oh Yes there is!!! First, make sure you have seen my video "How to work on a tug boat". Then once you get hired, the process can take a few months or a few years - be patient, Keep your eyes open and your mouth shut. Every new green hire wants to understandably fit in, but you will need to earn your stripe before you are one of the crew. Every new guy always wants to tell us what they know or how great they were before coming to work with us. A smart, hard working new hire has no need to tell anyone how good he is. (We will all know by watching you.) Remember that the job (working part) is only a very small part of what makes you a good shipmate. You have to live and work together. Help out and if that means you have to work during your off time or help someone that doesn't help you, so be it. Hang it there, keep your chin up and your mouth shut. Looking forward to seeing you on the dock. CUOTO
Interesting.....My tugboat wheelhouse career was on a rope hawser in the North East. Later the rope hawser tugs went to cable boats. My last two years were driving a pin boat for Morty. I must say the easiest tugboat job that i had was on a pin boat.
Right! Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel Frederick. I bet everything was easy on that pin boat except getting a relief. (Curse of Morty) CUOTO

Tim what are the advantage of a ATB to a normal bulk cargo ship? Can they go in the same sea state? Where I live we have the ship presque isle a 1000ft tug barge on the great lakes, and Im trying to figure out why build it ? Compared to its conventional counterparts like the paul r tregurtha?
For the most part, yes. There are some that might need a few STCW endorsements, but for the vast majority the answer is yes. Except (I can only guess) that many won't because of seasickness. #CUOTO
The construction industry is/was very similar, you start at the bottom and show you can work your way up. If you ever need to quit a job, quit nice cos come a day you may need to ask that guy for a job, he could have changed companies but I bet he's not lost his memory. I needed to get a phone number of a construction company starting a huge project in Cairo Egypt, but the name they were going under was not listed. So I called a consultant company that had been the management company for the client on projects I'd worked on. The operator put me through to the tunnel dept., I explained my reason for calling, they asked what position I was looking for and offered me Senior Inspector of Works on the same project. That job lasted 15 continuous years, plus when I did leave then for another project for 4 years. I gave them a call and went right back to work with them.
Thank you for watching. You can do most things if you are willing to do the hard work that may be required. I wish you great luck in pursuing this career.
You know you come to a point in your life and you say to yourself.......man, I missed my calling. I've only had this twice in 57 years. Maritime academy is one of those times. Regrets....can suck sometimes.
Thank you for watching Allen. I have faith that risk managers understand that we and our plans are the leading edge of what keeps claims from happening. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea I can only remember as a young deckhand fishing in Alaska in early 1980’s … most of the crew spent their entire crew share on Double Dee’s once in port .. I do miss that adventure .. as for the double D’s I already had a family and soon returned to a land life and a 35 year career as a construction superintendent… I guess that’s not that far off .. I still keep logs and a weather station on my job sites .. mostly watching out for legal storms .. like rouge waves they tend to come out of nowhere ! Lol 😂
I learned that there is no ‘right way’....everyone has a story of the way they got to wherever they’re at now. BUT, saying that, nobody got to where they are without hard work and sacrifice. You make ‘life choices’, just take God with you on each choice.
@@TimBatSea I can fully understand your choice to ride the fence. But I don't have to; Regan was like Moses to the rich people, he "set them free", he helped the people who needed it the least to make even more money faster, he was like a Robin Hood in reverse and he paved the way for trickle down bullshit economics throughout the western world. Britain got their own version of him in Maggie Thatcher. The US haven't had a good president since Kennedy, fact.
Oh I know...... Sometimes I know I shouldn't swing at every pitch, but that one had the fence written all over it. Lol. Thank you very much for watching and I'll try to tighten up in the future.

Thank you for watching Ron. I am really glad you like it. CUOTO
Fantastic Chuck and Tim, only complaint I have is why didn’t you let Chuck finish his breakfast before putting him on the spot.. lol
Tim you’re the best, keep em coming Capt. 🙂
Lol. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Lol. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
awsome stuff thanks
Thank you for watching and subscribing. I really appreciate it. CUOTO
That was interesting but you should have let Chuck eat first.. poor guy was trying to shovel in food when you were talking and trying real hard when he talked (but not doing very well).. But it was an interesting perspective he brought out.. thanks Tim.. carry on my brother..
Thank you very much. That's how he stays so thin. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea OH! so your helping him watch his weight.. such a good friend.. I could use a bit of help in that department myself..
CUOTO
I was really hungry when I saw this video. Belly rumbling.
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching.
Cool channel. I’m a50 yr old dude and I want to be an AB.

Thank you for watching now Rob. CUOTO
Missing most of your videos now - no utube email notification! 😣😣😣
Hmmm???? I am not showing that you are subscribed. Maybe that is it? Try to ring the bell too. I hope you get it figured out, but just know that every Tuesday the regular videos will post. (I have an extra short fun one coming out tomorrow.) CUOTO
Subscribed for over a year Tim....

Thank you for watching Marcus. I believe it is all about manning requirements. Ships new larger crew and thus cost the company more money. CUOTO
Hi Captain Tim!
CUOTO
Hello Mellissa. Thank you for supporting the channels. CUOTO
Like the intro
Thank you Michael. I am so bummed about the audio. I bought a new digital audio recorder, but obviously I haven't figured it out yet. CUOTO
If you have worked on a Push Boat or A River Tug Can you move on to a sea Tug or other types of Tugs ?
For the most part, yes. There are some that might need a few STCW endorsements, but for the vast majority the answer is yes. Except (I can only guess) that many won't because of seasickness. #CUOTO
DD (DONE & DOCKED) LOL: THANKS GUYS ENJOYED THE VIDEO AS USUAL:)
That's what I meant! Lol. Thank you for watching Brian. CUOTO
One thing I tell the workers under me....
I will not ask you to do something I wouldn’t do myself...If you need help ask me, I will help you...
Very good way to manage the crew. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
So true!!! We just hit bridges.... We don't burn them. LOL Thank you so much for watching! CUOTO
I want to be a cruise ship captain when I get older
Thank you for watching. You can do most things if you are willing to do the hard work that may be required. I wish you great luck in pursuing this career.
You know you come to a point in your life and you say to yourself.......man, I missed my calling. I've only had this twice in 57 years. Maritime academy is one of those times. Regrets....can suck sometimes.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
I spent 2 years on ships ,3 months on wire boats and 14 years on ATB's I much prefer the ATB's
Thank you for watching William. CUOTO
The insurance underwriters must cringe when hearing plan double D’s especially underway..😂
Lol 😂
So Tim, why are you moving??
Thank you for watching Matt. I've got big plans! Wish me luck. (I'm taking the channel with me)
What does CUOTO (I see it at the end of every riply comment) mean?
"see you on the one" (one whistle passing arrangement)
@@TimBatSea thx
I learned that there is no ‘right way’....everyone has a story of the way they got to wherever they’re at now. BUT, saying that, nobody got to where they are without hard work and sacrifice. You make ‘life choices’, just take God with you on each choice.
Amen Brother!! Thank you again!! CUOTO
What do you mean you used to be his mate? Does that mean you guys used too....??? Never mind I'm not going to judge to, each his own.
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. The mate is the second in command. CUOTO
his breakfast is getting cold. let him eat it.
Lol. But he had so much to say. Lol. Thank you for watching Brian. CUOTO
“did everything my parents and especially the Reagan administration would not like me to do”... nice
What a terrible man Regan was.
LOL Thank you for watching Brian. I was hoping someone would hear that. Oh if we could only go back in time...LOL CUOTO
Thank you for watching etikkboksen. I would love to chime in, but I really try to ride the fence while wearing my Tim B at Sea hat. CUOTO
Great visit with Chuck ! But shame on you for sexist humour.
Oh I know...... Sometimes I know I shouldn't swing at every pitch, but that one had the fence written all over it. Lol. Thank you very much for watching and I'll try to tighten up in the future.
.....tim is obnoxious in his incessant interruptions.
Guilty as charged. But David, please consider that I am but a mere tugboatman and not a polished interviewer. CUOTO
