A wonderful commentary on a most beloved Cardinal. I never knew him personally but I always read what he had to say or at least tried to. I remember when he was elected Cardinal by St. JPII. I watched him when he travelled to Rome to participate in the papal conclave that elected Papa Francis and enjoyed his commentary the best.
I pray he will rest in eternal peace and intercede for us as we intercede for him.
Lord Jesus, Risen Lord, grant your faithful son heaven.
    Amen!

Dear Cardinal Francis is sorely missed here in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Among our last four cardinals - Cody, Bernardin, himself, and Cupich - he stood alone as a shining beacon of wisdom and heroic grace. Stricken with polio at age 13, he never allowed his disability to deter him from his mission. From 2004 to 2010 he served three years as Vice President and then three years as President of the USCCB. He corrected the many liturgical abuses that had flourished under Benardin. He shut down the source - the Liturgy Training Publications run by the Protestant Gabe Huck, which was supplying not only publications, but also "liturgists" who would assist pastors in "reforming" the sacred liturgy, and also encourage them to bring in high-priced church architects who would show them how to "remodel" their churches, removing all sacred art, and turning them into gymnasium-like "gathering places". The "gutted sanctuary" of Holy Name Cathedral seen in this video is an example of such remodeling. Cardinal Francis was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2006, which later spread to his kidney and liver. He died far too soon in April of 2015. Pray for us, Cardinal Francis, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ, and of the wonderful legacy of authentic church teaching that you left for us.

Good to learn this. OMI congregation hold a special place with my family & my city in the Philippines.
They have done a great deal of missionary work in our province. Grew up knowing a lot & supported a lot of them. Sad, because a number of them died because of terrorist acts in a region in Mindanao island, in the Philippines up until now.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord; and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he, with the souls of all of the faithful departed, by the mercies of God, rest in peace.
A towering American priest. Both "The Difference that God Makes: A Catholic Vision of Faith, Culture, and Communion" and "God in Action: How Faith in God Can Address the Challenges of the World" are remarkably salient must reads.
    Requiescat in pace.

Permit this Irishman to also express his condolences on the loss of your dear friend in Christ, Cardinal George. I also thank you for taking the time to present who he really was and his vision for the Church. I am heartened by your message of hope. We here in Ireland are going through a tough time at the moment faced, as we are, with the challenge of the upcoming Marriage Referendum. We need to listen to both Kant and Cardinal George.

Hard to even begin to try and come up with a suitable comment on this video. There's a lot here to try and digest and I'll have to go over it again several times to gain a proper appreciation of all that is being said, especially as it concerns Cardinal Francis George and how he thought. I really liked the terse statement that Cardinal George was "...an advocate of simply Catholicism." I like that statement very much!

    Hello Fr. Barron,
I was wondering what your thoughts are on what Cardinal George said about his successor's deaths and the role of the Faith in rebuilding society.

Francis Eugene George OMI (January 16, 1937 - April 17, 2015) was an American cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Archbishop Emeritus of Chicago.
He was the eighth Archbishop of Chicago (1997-2014) and previously served as Bishop of Yakima (1990-1996) and Archbishop of Portland, Oregon (1996-1997).
A member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, George was created a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1998.
He served as president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2007 to 2010.
On September 20, 2014, Pope Francis accepted George's resignation and appointed Bishop Blase J. Cupich of Spokane, Washington, to succeed him as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
In this unusual circumstance, George was permitted to remain as the incumbent archbishop until Cupich was installed to succeed him on November 18, 2014.
He was initially diagnosed with cancer in 2006, and died from the disease in 2015.

Great tribute! The stone that was rejected by the Archdiocese became its cornerstone!
Unfortunately the rejection story was not quite correct as to the compassionate concern of possible personal difficulties. When he applied there was the beginning of a boom in candidates for the priesthood. With that glut the Archdiocese became very picky and choosy, leaving those who did not qualify to seek other sponsor dioceses as Chgo would not even consider applying to Rome for canonical dispensation eg for physical problems as well as questions of illegitimacy (note not applicable in the Cardinal’s case). Hence the policy was not to accept candidates that were adopted on the presumption that they were illegitimates.in many cases neighboring diocese such as Joliet (est 1949) would be willing to seek any dispensations needed and sponsor the candidate. Sad but true!
Ironically if the Cardinal did go thru the Quigley/Mundelein route he never would have become Chicago’s archbishop !
