Field macro work is the main thing I do, and I recently upgraded to the EOS 90D after an unfortunate accident with my 70D. I saw this video after I'd already ordered the 90D, but it made me feel less anxious about my choice. Did you ever get the 90D yourself? If so, I'd love to get your reaction and see some of your sample shots. I just got it yesterday and am still running it through all the tests. So far, so good. But today I discovered one unfortunate glitch which really cramps my own shooting style. When I am out in the field, I always have my external flash and diffuser on the camera. I spend most of my time shooting very small things like jumping spiders, so I am usually in manual mode at the minimum focusing distance and using the flash. However, when I spot something a bit larger and further away, like a large butterfly or a bird, I quickly turn off the flash and switch over to aperture priority mode to grab that shot. With the 70D, no problem. But for some absurd reason, the 90D continues to recognize that an external flash is connected, even when it is turned off, and will not allow for a shutter speed any faster than 1/250 sec. (the sync speed for the flash.) It won't shoot faster than that in Av, and won't allow me to manually change it either. Update: Canon tech support helped me work around the issue. They are awesome!
Thank you, Stewart. It is nice to see that some people like yourself on RUclips are taking the approach of evaluating a camera in the context of whether it is the best tool for your specific needs rather than engaging in speculation as to why or why not anyone else should buy it vs something else. It will be interesting to see where you land.
The internet has exploded over this 24p thing lol. I'm just trying to plan out next year and trying to predict what functions I will need to create the content I want to create for my subscribers.
i guess im asking randomly but does any of you know a trick to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Ishaan Andrew i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Hi...I just love your macro videos. I have also 90D. Please suggest to me a budget macro lens & flash for the same. I'm a student, and can't afford too much but have a huge interest in this genre. Thank you in advance.
Sorry to comment on an old video but the one feature of the 90D that really interests me is the inbuilt focus bracketing, though I don't know how good it is compared to using stacking software. No interest in 24fps video but focus stacking could be very useful if it works...hopefully the R5 will have it too!
It’ll do good for macro, I used to use the 80D. The only thing I would consider over this is a mirrorless camera, maybe wait to see if Canon announce the R7 any time soon.
@Stewart Wood fantastic thanks Stewart. I look forward to watching it. Hopefully I will get my answers on the video and what you recommend. Keep.up the good work cheers
Canon Rumours still suggesting an EOS-R style camera with an APS-C sensor - I can't help but think the complete eradication of vibration from the mirror mechanism - allowing handheld macro work using the viewfinder - would be a game changer for me. Based on current pricing I'd say it might be comparable to the 90D in terms of price if it does happen, and might share the same sensor and processor setup. Interested to know if you feel mirror shake is a factor when doing handheld macro - I really find an increase in hitrate using live-view over the viewfinder - but find using the viewfinder much easier for framing images. On a tripod, using live view, this is obviously irrelevant, as the mirror is locked up - but about 3/4 of the photography I do is handheld. 100% agree with you on the benefit of APS-C for macro - especially if you are shooting at base ISO and using flash/studio lighting anyway.
An APS-C EOS-R would be great, I do suffer from vibration from the mirror. A mirror-less 90D would be great and I don't have to make a decision until the new season (march 2020) so that's why I said I'm going to wait and see what people say about this camera.
@@skakdosmer which is all very well unless you are dealing with live insects that move - liveview or tripod are rarely an option, but even using flash at 1/250th second handheld, at 1:1 magnification, or close to it, it is my opinion that mirror shake does affect a percentage of images, especially without IS. Unfortunately for me, 90% of my images are taken handheld of live subjects in the outdoors, and this therefore causes an issue. Especially if its windy and you are taking images one handed to hold a branch still with another - like Stewart does in the video. That makes live view impossible.
Hi Stewart ! Thanks for doing thoses videos, I'm looking to improve my macro equipment and it helps a lot. Would you say the 90D is the best APS-C option for macro photography ?
Did I understand correctly? The macro lens, say... a 24-70 f/4 macro? Is reduced on an APS-C? So rather than multiply a 600mm lens by 1.6 it is divided on the macro? Making the 24-70 a 15-43mm macro?
I like your style which is sincere and to the point. I have recently subscribed to your channel. I have started macro photography recently (couple of months). I have a good old 7D... I purchased Canon 100mmf/2.8. I want to upgrade. I watched this video just now. How are your thoughts now about 90D. Should I go for it or what else? Thanks in advance.
Interesting thoughts Stewart. The video looked fine, but I generally don't notice frame rates unless it's 60fps. Generally, when I'm watching videos, I watch for content, not motion blur😉😂 I have a couple of questions for you. You mentioned extra magnification with APS-C, what are your thoughts on M4/3 which would be 2x? I know you aren't looking to switch, just curious. Is there any reason you wouldn't consider the M6 II? For me the add on EVF kills it unless there is another way to trigger a flash. Being a newer subscriber, I'm fuzzy one if you switch between live view and the viewfinder.
It's personal preference, I just prefer the DSLR body. I've not tried m4/3 yet but hope to in the future. I'm more attracted to the 90D as I'm already shooting macro on the 80D and love it.
Hi Stewart, no noticeable change between 24 & 25 on here, the digic 8 sensor is far superior to the 650d you've got, all round it's a nice upgrade, Canon are known to hold tech back for no reason grrr 😡 but the L glass is fantastic isn't it....i've got a full frame 6d mark ii which gets loads of hate but it's perfect for what i need. great videos by the way i'm thinking to get myself a few jumping spiders to macro! you've inspired me thanku 🙏🏻
Hi Stewart, i don't take movies i only take still images and i use a 7D mk1 for all my shots so the 90D looks like a much improved camera. Do you have any idea how the 90D compares with the 7D Mk1 or even Mk2 as there are still plenty of them for sale. I think my 7D maybe old but its still going strong so i have to really way up the pros and cons before spending a lot of money - I wish there was a Mk 3 on the horizon but according to Tony Northrup that is looking dead - boo hoo
It definitely captured my interest. But it won't make me run to the stores just jet. I have always prefered full frame even for macro photography and I just don't think it would give me more then my 5ds is currently. but perhaps as a backup/second camera. currently, that is my 5d mkII and even though it's still a great camera I wouldn't be opposed to trading it in for a 90d but I'll wait a bit for that.
No, you cannot tell the difference between 25p and 24p. People are having hissy fits over this one point. As if they are going to make the next greatest movie for cinema. It's like they always have to find something to be upset about.
Yep, I would like 24p but its not the end of the world. I create content to teach people macro photography and to hopefully entertain so 25p will be fine!
Stewart : I downloaded the 90D manual and on page 255 it talks about focus bracketing, which is the same thing as in-camera focus stacking similar to what the newer Nikons have built in. So, you don’t necessarily have to do handheld stacking. Since I love to do macro with my 80D, I think I’m going to get a 90D!
These is a click-baiting video. You not even have this camera at your disposal, you are reading down the specs from the website. What is that for? Remember your first videos you really provided useful content to your viewers ...
I am providing content, I'm talking about upgrading my camera asking for viewers options on the mirror-less EOS R and weather or not this camera should be my next upgrade. Sorry, but its not click bait as I use the Canon 80D for macro photography!

I have my trusty 80D it works like charm. A upgrade from 650d to 90D would be coool.😃 I would like to see a full review of 90D.

Any chance of you switching to sony?
Not at the moment, would cost too much to replace lenses, flashes and accessory's.
Canon has released firmware update 1.1.1 for the 90D. This update adds 24fps to the camera.
It's nice of them to add it but it should have been a standard feature from the start.
