I share your sentiment. The gulf war was in progress when I was in my early 20's and I choose to not enlist. It remains a huge regret of mine for having not done it. Blessed I didn't have to but wishing I had anyway.
I was just a dumb kid and thought the military would be just constant misery. Running, getting yelled at, strict rules and regulations etc. then get shot at in some foreign country. Too many war movies. By the time I realized how it actually was I had responsibilities and all that entails. Same for the baseball thing. I wouldn't have stood a chance but I never even took it because of my perceptions. Learned a lot from those 2 things. Thanks. Steve
My Dad served in the Air Force 23 years. I blamed the service for breaking up our family after my parents' divorce. So, I buckled down and acquired skills that got me to retirement, 35 years later.
I always heard from guy that where in. The service ain't no placed for as married man. Being deployed, 6 month Cruises, base transfers etc. are hard on a family. We all did what we thought was best for us at the time. I just think now I should have at least given both these a try. Live and learn I guess. Steve
I joined the Air Force 30 days after my high school graduation at the age of 17 and never regretted, I learned so much early in life: respect for authority, teamwork, learning that life is not about me but helping others and working together and standing up for our country.
I was young, scarred and stupid. I had no idea of the bigger picture about the service. Now that I'm a little older I wish I would have at least tried both of these. Live and learn I guess. Thanks. Steve
