The dilemma of love and duty is one of the main themes of Game of Thrones, I hope I have represented it!

Eddard Stark, despite what Cersei and others thought, won not only the game of thrones (one son King of the 7 Kingdoms, two sons King in the North, one daughter Queen in the North) but saved the realm, not by being a great warrior but by being a great and wise father. One good man is enough.

In addition to that, Jon Snow is the person who can understand what Jamie went through when he killed the “Mad King.” Crazy, seeing as how vastly different they are, but similar as well.

leaguephysique They’ve had similarities, but due to the completely different upbringing, they differ from each other... And at the end Jaime chose love over duty as he did almost the entire show, Jon/Aegon chose the opposite as he went to the nights watch and was struggling with himself what was the right thing, but in the entire show he always chose duty over love (when he almost went to Robb he almost chose love over duty but it’s debatable if going to Robb wasn’t also his duty as they’re his family and there had been injustice done to them).

The Foxus That’s due to the fact that Jaime was mocked after he killed his king and his father was disappointed in him because he chose fighting and riding over getting educated to be an intelligent ruler one day. To contradict Jon was getting educated about honor and was learned how to fight, that suited him better as you could see his character wasn’t intelligent at all just like Jaime lacked on that aspect

I agree with Omair. Andrea, I think your comment is missing some stuff and is twisting some actions. Dany didn't mess up due to love. All she had to do was accept KL's surrender and not burn down a city after she won -- that was it. If she did that, she'd still be alive and be queen. Or even if she just agreed to mercy over destruction, Dany would still be alive. Dany refused Jon's pleas for mercy in the end, despite her love for him.
It feels like when Dany does something wrong, like Dany burning KL, you say it was a plot contrivance to justify her death but when other characters fail or do crappy things, they're assholes. Jon was still willing to give her another chance, he was willing to forgive her what she did to King's Landing, he never wanted to kill her, but Dany felt destruction was the right way to go. She felt what she was doing was right and wasn't willing to give that up for love, even when Jon was pleading for her to be merciful. She still didn't agree.
Plus, per Kit Harington's comments on the DVD, Jon had _no_ intention of betraying Daenerys until the very end -- when Dany said nobody else gets to choose what's good for the world. He didn't go in there intending to betray Dany, he pleas for her to be merciful were genuine, not a trick. Jon didn't want to kill her. Per the writers and scripts, Jon really did love Dany. He couldn't even bring himself to feel killing Dany was the right thing to do. When Tyrion was urging Jon to kill Dany after she burned a city, Jon _fought_ against that and tried to rationalize Dany's actions. He didn't want to believe this is who Dany had become. Jon never, never wanted to kill her. Also, I think Jon really did mean his last words to Dany, that she will always be _his_ queen on a personal level. Jon knelt to Bran because Bran was the legal king at the time.
And yes, Dany loved Jon. But Dany saving Jon doesn't give her a free pass to do whatever -- he can't be blindly loyal (nor can she be to him). She tried to suppress the truth of who Jon really was, she didn't want him to tell his sisters about who _he_ really was ever. She had good reason! (And she ended up being right about Sansa). But it's not like love was guiding Dany's every action, like here. Dany made choices like everyone else, nobody forced her to make these choices and she didn't burn KL for love or declare to wage war on the world for love. Only Dany is responsible for her actions, just like Jon/Sansa/Tyrion. She had a choice at the end and chose mass murder and wanting to carry on the destruction.
As for the advice part, Dany wanted to know what Jon thought when she asked for his input and Jon was honest with her. Tyrion gave Dany advice that they truly thought was best. Dany chose to take this advice and she took this advice on admirable grounds: she didn't want to kill millions of people then.
I will say Jon failed Dany at Dragonstone and I think that was because he, too, was reeling. He was having trouble with incest and tried to give her what he could... but Dany also failed Jon. She wasn't there for Jon dealing with how he just found out his whole life has been a lie and how everything he knew about himself was false. So I think they failed each other here.

    • @astranger4634
      @astranger4634 4 года назад +11

No, it actually mirrors Littlefinger and Catelyn. The song "Jenny of Oldstones" that you heard in episode 2 was a song in which they danced when they were children. "never wanted to leave" is the lyric that reveals Petyr's denial. The denial that Cat didn't want to kiss him. A denial that created the man who orchestrated the entire story... the real protagonist and the one who has the true power in all the events. Power doesn't lie in kings or queens. It doesn't lie on people who sit on a throne and claim to be "kings". It's a trick.. a shadow on the wall... an unnoticed idea that lives on forever without getting noticed.. just like this comment.
And... a very small man can cast a very large shadow.
But yeah ! Let's repeat once again : " It mirrors Jaime ! It Mirrors Jon and Dany !!! "
      Isn't it ?

I’ve been reading a lot of different interpretations of Maester Aemon’s moral dilemma of love vs duty when it comes to Jon’s decision to kill Daenerys. I feel like a lot of people are mistakenly assigning the side of love to Daenerys, when I feel like his decision is meant to perfectly mirror Ned Stark’s decision in the first season. Love is supposed to represent Sansa & Arya.
In the same episode Ned Stark dies, we're presented with this hypothetical by Maester Aemon:

Aemon: Tell me, did you ever wonder why the men of the Night’s Watch take no wives and father no children?
    Jon: No.
Aemon: So they will not love. Love is the death of duty. If the day should ever come when your lord father was forced to choose between honor on the one hand and those he loves on the other, what would he do?
Jon: He would do whatever was right. No matter what.
Aemon: Then Lord Stark is 1 man in 10,000. Most of us are not so strong. What is honor compared to a woman’s love? And what is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms? Or a brother’s smile?
    Jon: Sam told you.
Aemon: We’re all human. Oh, we all do our duty when there’s no cost to it. Honor comes easy then. Yet sooner or later in every man’s life there comes a day when it is not easy. A day when he must choose.

Earlier in that same episode Ned is actually presented with this very dilemma by Varys, and in the beginning, he predictably chooses honor and his duty to Robert Baratheon.

Ned: What do you want? Tell me. No riddles, no stories. Tell me, what do you want?
Varys: Peace. Did you know that your son is marching South with an army of Northmen? Loyal lad. Fighting for his father’s freedom.
Ned: Robb? He’s just a boy.
Varys: Boys have been conquerors before. But the man giving Cersei sleepless nights is the King’s, the late King's brother. Lord Stannis has the best claim to the throne. He is a proven battle commander and he is utterly without mercy.
Ned: Stannis Baratheon is Robert’s true heir. The throne is his by rights.
Varys: Sansa pleaded so sweetly for your life, it would be a shame to throw it away. Cersei is no fool. She knows a tame wolf is more use to her than a dead one.
Ned: You want me to serve the woman who murdered my king, who butchered my men, who crippled my son?
Varys: I want you to serve the realm! Tell the queen you will confess your vile treason, tell your son to lay down his sword, and proclaim Joffrey as the true heir. Cersei knows you as a man of honor. If you give her the peace she needs, and promise to carry her secret to your grave, I believe she will allow you take the black and live out your days on the Wall with your brother and your bastard son.
Ned: You think my life is some precious thing to me? That I would trade my honor for a few more year of, of what? You grew up with actors. You learned their craft, and you learned it well. But I grew up with solders. I learned how to die a long time ago.
    Varys: Pity. Such a pity.

Ned Stark won’t trade his honor and duty to King Robert to save his own life, or potentially bring peace to the realm. The thought of Robb marching South starting a war doesn't even persuade him. So Varys throws a hail marry:

Varys: What of your daughter’s life, my lord? Is that a precious thing to you?

Ned’s weakness is revealed. He is no longer 1/10,000 men, he can't bear the idea of something happening to Sansa & Arya. He goes on to make a false confession, and abandon his duty to King Robert because he chose the love of his daughters.
Fast-forward to season 8, and Jon is now faced with the decision to kill Daenerys, the queen he is sworn to serve. Much like Varys with Ned, Tyrion isn’t very successful at convincing Jon to abandon his duty.

Tyrion: She believes her destiny is to build a better world for everyone. If you believed that, if you truly believed it, wouldn’t you kill whoever stood between you and paradise? I know you love her. I love her too. Not as successfully as you, but I believed in her with all my heart. Love is more powerful than reason. We all know that. Look at my brother.
Jon: Love is the death of duty.
Tyrion: You just came up with that?
Jon: Maester Aemon said it a long time ago.
Tyrion: Sometimes duty is the death of love. You are the shield that guards the realms of men. And you’ve always tried to do the right thing. No matter the cost, you’ve tried to protect people. Who is the greatest threat to the people now? It’s a terrible thing I’m asking, it’s also the right thing. Do you think I’m the last man she’ll execute? Who is more dangerous than the rightful heir to the Iron Throne?
Jon: That’s her decision. She is the queen. I’m sorry it came to this.

Despite the atrocities that Daenerys has committed, Tyrion isn't getting anywhere. Like Ned, Jon is a slave to his duty and honor. Here comes Tyrion's hail marry as a last resort:

Tyrion: And your sisters? Do you see them bending the knee?
Jon: My sisters will be loyal to the throne.
Tyrion: Why do you think Sansa told me the truth about you? Because she doesn’t want Daenerys to be queen.
Jon: She doesn’t get to choose.
Tyrion: No, but you do. And you have to choose now.

The day has come for Jon Snow to choose, love or duty. Continue to serve the queen, and Sansa & Arya are likely as good as dead. Of course, like his adopted father, he chooses his love for Sansa & Arya over his duty to the crown.
This is further demonstrated by Jon’s final words to Daenerys not being a declaration of love, but rather a continued submission to her as his ruler.

    • @analise8031
      @analise8031 3 года назад +6

Well, I think it was a matter of love and duty on both sides (love for Dany vs. duty to the realm, love for sisters vs. duty to Dany). It doesn't have to be that binary.
Jon was fighting against the idea of killing Dany, even after she torched an entire city, because of love (and this was after Arya brought Sansa up) -- as framed by his conversation with Tyrion. And this is supported in the scripts and by those behind the show. I can't see him doing this for anyone or anything else if he didn't love them -- not for honor, not for duty. Jon has done more to people who have done far less. He was willing to dishonorably break sacred guest right and assassinate Mance, a man he liked, to end Mance's attack on the Wall.
Yet, Jon still wasn't willing to kill Dany after she torched a city, after Tyrion said she'd continue, and didn't decide to when either Arya or Tyrion brought up Jon's sisters. He still tried pleading with Dany to convince her toward mercy. It was only when Dany refused to back down that Jon made this decision. And it's one he couldn't bring himself to feel right about, even after everything. That seems like more than just honor to me. Jon's okay with breaking his honor to do the right thing but he wasn't okay with killing Dany. And I think Jon meant his last words to Dany on a personal level. He didn't tell Sansa or Arya he loved them, nor did he give Ygritte a declaration of love before she died.

And people have the gall to spit on this show. I love that this show stayed uncompromising until it's bitter end, that those who expected cheap fan service (Jaime & Brienne together forever, Arya using her face to kill Cersei, Dany somehow ending up a just and democratic ruler) were sorely disappointing. They never figured out it was never about Team Jaime, Team Arya, Team Dany, Team Jon or whatever. It was about the tapestry of humanity, about truly difficult choices, about out triumps, but also about our failures and regressions. It is what made the show real and always has. From season 1, the show drew up paths that made narrative sense (Ned at the Night's Watch, Rob torching Lannisport, Jaime ending up with Brienne, Joffrey as a cruel ruler, Oberyn going after Tywin and so on...) only to cruelly abandon them.
I'm sorry, but Cersei being reduced to a whimpering husk after all her posturing is far more 'satisfying' than Cersei revealing herself to be some arch villain, Jaime abandoning the mother of his child would have never felt real, neither would it be 'redemption', Arya continuing to extract revenge would have been hollow and empty, Jon ruling based on his heritage would have been a slap in the face to everything the show is about and Dany ruling after all the people she burned alive and ruling not only based on her birthright, but also on the brute force of the dragons, would be not only an even bigger slap to the themes of the show but also the height of moral travesty.

Yeah, the Arya/Cersei theories drove me nuts. It was obviously never going to happen. You don't have a character as vital to the series as Cersei have her final scene with a character she has no connection to. She wears Jaime's face to trick Cersei, takes it off and reveals...a character Cersei doesn't recognize? How epic.

    • @theicebutterfly

That's not the story people mostly complain about, the story is logical and very fine in itself which is a credit to the author of the books, it's bad execution of the story that is a valid complaint. This is what must happen when the focus is not on characters and the main stories but on effects. To be honest the show was like this from the very beginning: convoluted, incoherent, lacking clarity and focus, going for shock value, twists bla bla and lot's of commercialised violence ect., it only got bigger with more visual efects and the supposed climax being battles and distraction not people, and adding all cheasy teary meeting/farewells lasting forever. Plus, in the end ther's only one side perspective, it's all about Starks and their interests. Peole just expeted what they couldn't get with this team production, maybe other production woud have done it beter but the scope was pretty hard anyway, TV is not books.

For the love of his first wife and their daughter, he named Rhaenyra heir to the iron throne, whereas his duty compelled him to remarry and split it asunder. Ultimately, he doomed those he loved because of it. @@mederecord7991 I have realized that you have captured the essence of what GOT is here. If someone asks what Game of Thrones is, the answer is, "It is a tragedy". And that is exactly what you pulled together here. I am reminded of one of the most anguished lines of a character in another favorite series of mine, Babylon 5, in which the grief-stricken character bursts out, "All love is unrequited!!". A profundly memorable scene, and the actress, Claudia Christian, should have recieved an Emmy award for it.
