  • Detroit Public School's $33 million television studios unused after a decade.
DETROIT (WXYZ) - 10 years ago and $33 million later, Detroit Public Schools opened two state of the art television studios that were touted as some of the best in the world. They would be used, officials said, to give students a world-class education in broadcasting.
A decade later, not a single student has used them.
Not in 2009, when officials first promised 7 Action News that the four-year-old facility would be operational, and not since. The Detroit School of Arts was opened to much fanfare in 2005, featuring television studios that would be the envy of even television networks.
    No expense spared

I actually attend Detroit School of Arts and they do use most of the studios including the huge one with the green screen in the corner. they don't use them all mainly because we don't have a lot of radio/tv majors. All concerts are recorded by student and the tech team (students) do all music and lighting for the concerts. they have more than one radio show going on and they use the equipment. the drama majors all get recorded when the do plays and they make short films just because all of it isn't being used doesn't mean that the radio/tv majors aren't getting education in Television.

Educators spending funds, buying equipment, without a short or long term education plan. Now equipment is dated, terrible.

In 1980, I was 16 Years old and remember the LOCAL news talking about the PROBLEMS in the schools in Detroit AND how they were going to fix it. Few years later, News story about teachers stealing computers and taking them home and/or giving them to friends.
    37 years LATER...Same story
    ...... Problems in Detroit Schools.
    THIS IS SAD!.
Generations of kids going to bad schools. And we wonder why there is crime etc.
Retirement money/bonuses should be taken away ????????????
When people get a pay check either way for doing " Great work " or " Terrible work " is never good!

Have they started to use it in earnest? I remember when I lived in Westland about ten years ago, they had a public access studio that nobody used so it isn't just Detroit.

smartphone camera made all studio heavy duty equipment s redundant these days .you can shot films and audio with a nice smartphone and post the same in the internet along with the heavy duty studio shot products. very least difference between studio and a smartphone .

Someone at the DPS had an idea to create some high quality porn at public expense.

It is clearly not a supportable project. Bite the bullet, sell the equipment, sack the idiots who are responsible. Simples. But do not struggle on just because a TV channel applies pressure. If they cared so much they would donate the $400k

fallyhag but the thing is we cant just sell it because we use most of it.

+fallyhag The equipment is outdated to sell to somebody or company with money. Too expensive for somebody who don't have much money. Detroit fucked up bad!!! That $33 million could have been put to good use to something esle.

+fallyhag Most public schools in the country can only dream of having even this outdated equipment. Talk about an unequal education system!

noahsark1962 this school was built longggggg before they went into debt so this has nothing to do with it if that's what you're implying.
